A new storyline which sees Johnny Carter (played by Sam Strike) and Danny Pennant (played by Gary Lucy) kiss in Walford Sqaure attracted numerous homophobic tweets on New Years Eve.
Some users even called for the characters to be killed, whilst others said they would stop watching the soap if the gay storyline continued.
Phil Brown @celebgossPB a Celebrity commentator said of the Tweets:
'So much homophobia over a gay kiss in #Eastenders. Stop living in a hole and get a life. You're what's wrong with society.'
However the late 9.00PM broadcast time of Eastenders, which is usually at 7:30 or 8:00PM was also questioned by Twitter users.
Vile people... get a grip it's 2014!
thay all seem to be asian names how would they like it if we tweeted the P word for them
We've come a long way but sorry to say we've got an even longer wah to go unfortunately. Check any news companies threads if it contains a gay story.
Wow keyboard warriors bet they would defecate themselves if they bumped into one of us in real life.
Ignorance is bliss lmao x
he you noticed how QUITE ALOT of them comments came from coloured or asain ppl!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it's sad that we still live in a world where ppl still think it's ok to call others "faggots" it's so hurtful.... All those ppl that commented are probably insecure them selves ...
Trying to link the homophobia to their color makes u come across just as backward and stupid as they r .........
Look one form of discrimination does not excuse another, skin colour does not come into this equation it is the person's personal issue's that cause these problems.
Some people need to get with the times it's not like it's the first get kiss on a soap and definitely not first gay kiss on Eastenders
