Sunderland Pride are pleased to announce that Peter Tatchell has joined the team in their quest to celebrate the sexuality of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Trans withing Wearside.
Mr Tatchell, who has campaigned for global equality for over 40 years, will join the team behind the planning of Sunderland’s leading celebration of LGB&T life as Patron of the organisation, that was granted charity status earlier this month.
In a statement, he said he was ‘very honoured to be a patron of Sunderland Pride.’ He went on to urge members of the public to give it their support and to keep the support going for the ‘campaign for LGBT dignity, respect and human rights – in Sunderland and worldwide.’
Through the Peter Tatchell Foundation, he campaigns for human rights in Britain and internationally and will be a figurehead for Sunderland Pride as they head into the final planning stages for the 2012 event, the second of it’s kind, following a highly successful event last September.
Chairman of the organisation, Arnie Tylor said,’it is fantastic that we have been able to attract such a high figure within the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered community as Peter. He continues to work hard to end discrimination in all walks of life, just as we as an organisation do within the Wearside area.’
This year’s Sunderland Pride will be held on Sunday 23rd of September, and will feature a whole host of artists from around the country including Newcastle soul sensation, Sam Dickinson, and fellow award winning local artists, Totally GaGa, who recently wowed crowds at Northern Pride, and the headline of the event, Westlife tribute band, Envy. They will feature alongside newly formed boy band Rewind, Jade Saunders as Jessie J and Steps tribute band, The Steps Experience. Also featuring at this years event will be Sunderland drag artist Miss Trixie and Lush Entertainment’s Le Freake and Ushwaki.
