TODAY IN GAY | Will And Grace First Airs

TODAY IN GAY HISTORY: Will And Grace makes TV History, by becoming the longest-running mainstream sitcom in which storylines revolved around gay principal characters.

Airing on the 21st September 1998, Will And Grace made TV History. Over the course of 194 episodes over 8 seasons, American audiences began to love and accept openly gay storylines and characters.

It gave birth to characters such as Karen Walker and Jack McFarland.

Although the show opened to a certain amount of criticism the show became a staple on the NBC network and enjoyed a peak of 17.3 million viewers in the US. The first episode aired on the 18th May 2006.

The show’s popularity and reach were credited to opening the door to a wave of gay-themed programming such as Queer As Folk.

Former US Vice President Joe Biden said that the series had had a profound impact on how LGBT rights and how Americans viewed gay people. He said, “I think Will & Grace did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody has ever done. People fear that which is different. Now they’re beginning to understand”, in an interview during Meet The Press.

  • There is someone who WON’T be returning to Will And Grace

OH NOOOOO… Karen’s faithful housemaid won’t be making a return to the iconic reboot of Will And Grace.

Shelley Morrison won’t be returning to Will And Grace as Karen Walker’s ever faithful maid Rosario. It seems that Shelley has retired. Her last role was in My Name Is Earl.

Speaking at a smaller presser last Thursday the show’s co-creator Max Mutchnick said,

    “Shelley has decided to retire,

“It was with a heavy heart that she gave us that information and that we received it, but it is the way that it goes. It is a choice that she has made. We really wanted Shelley to be a part of this series, so we find ourselves having to figure that out moving forward. It was not an easy decision to make, but it’s one that she made.”

It was on, then it was off and now it’s on again.

Ten episodes of the hit 90’s comedy Will And Grace will return to the small screen after NBC green-lit the production. The announcement came after one of the show’s stars, Leslie Jordan, jumped the gun and told fans that the show was going ahead. The news forced Debra Messing, who plays Grace in the show, to deny the report and say the show was still just in talks.

“We’re thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest and most defining comedies in NBC history is coming back,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. “This groundbreaking series for everything from gay rights to social and political commentary — all disguised as a high-speed train of witty pop culture — is coming back where it belongs.”

When the show first broadcast it faced criticism after it failed to star an openly gay actor.

    NBC/KoMut

Despite what Leslie Jordan said, there isn’t a new series of the landmark show, Will And Grace on the make. The show’s lead, Debra Messing, has taken to Twitter to dismiss the claims made by the comedian, by saying that the cast and producers are just in “talks”.

Fans across the globe rejoiced when one of the show’s cameos, Leslie Jordan, confirmed that a new season with 10 episodes was being made and due to hit our screens later this year. The show was considered grounding breaking during its original run from the late ’90s to the mid ‘oos and starred, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan O’Mullally. It ran for 8 seasons and had 194 episodes.

Debra poured cold water on the claims by tweeting,

“Sadly Leslie was wrong. Nothing beyond talks.”
