  • COMMENT | Trump’s Transgender military ban: How reducing minorities limits team success

The recent decision of the US Supreme Court to continue the Trump administration’s ban on transgender people serving in the military is an unnecessary limitation on organisational effectiveness.

What is the goal of the military (at least in democracies)? Overwhelmingly our clients in the defence sector tell us it is operational effectiveness. The question then, aside from any personal prejudice for or against trans people, is, “does their inclusion in the organisation contribute to operational effectiveness?”.

Much to the chagrin of many detractors, the evidence suggests that it does.

Take any organisational ecosystem and analyse its productive potential. We know that a lack of diversity can lead to higher risk, lower resilience and lower productivity. Similarly, extremely high levels of diversity, if not led well, can lead to lack of trust, poor morale and team bonding.

However, the military (in general) is extremely good at leadership. In fact, I would go as far as to say that in my 15 years working with the UK military, it has gone from one of the worst sectors on LGBT+ inclusion to one of the better ones. Look at the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index to see.

Jerry Patterson, a retired marine, argues that Trans people should be banned because a 2015 survey by the National Coalition of Transgender Equality found that “…40 percent of trans-identified respondents had attempted suicide during their lifetime — nearly nine times the attempted suicide rate in the US population.”

However, like all of us in general, not all trans people want to serve in the military. Good recruitment policies look at individual talent and contribution, not general prejudices.

Contrast Jerry’s view with that of the British Royal Air Force. The RAF Museum has celebrated the contributions of three trans service personnel, Roberta Cowell, Caroline Page and Ayla Holdom, three transgender women who are either currently serving or have previously served in the Royal Air Force at different periods of time over the past 100 years.

Indeed when Trump announced his ban, UK military leaders across the services were unanimous in their condemnation of an unnecessary and politically charged policy of discrimination that would harm the hard-won cohesiveness of the military.

“When you are a family at sea for 6 months you have to work as a cohesive unit”

When I first started working with the Royal Navy after the lifting of the LGBT ban in 2000, Naval captains were brutally honest with me. They knew they had always had gay personnel in their midst but they were persecuted – bad for them and the overall team morale. They made a conscious decision to include. When you are a family at sea for 6 months you have to work as a cohesive unit. Including difference makes you stronger, not weaker.

And at the end of the day, we need to ask ourselves an even more fundamental question: why does the military exist if not to defend the values we hold dear? Inclusion is one of them.

    It was a unanimous decision.

President Trump‘s star on the Walk Of Fame could be removed permanently after it was destroyed by recent vandalism.

Deciding on whether the star should be retained following its destruction, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce voted unanimously on a resolution which will urge it and the Los Angeles City Council, who decides on who makes the Walk of Fame. to remove it for good.

The vote was taken on Monday night and the agenda item read, “The City Council will consider adopting a resolution urging the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove President Donald J. Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, due to his disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country.”

    The vote was unanimous.

After the meeting, a council rep emailed The Hollywood Reporter saying, “At this evening’s regular City Council meeting, the West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously to approve the Resolution.”

However, this vote doesn’t necessarily mean that the LA City Council and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will act on its vote.

The LA City Council and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce have never removed any Walk Of Fame stars for reasons of controversy or wrong-doing.

Trump’s star has been vandalised numerous times and completely destroyed twice. The first vandalism happening in 2007. The latest was in July when a 24-year-old activist allegedly took to it with a pick-axe.

Donald’s Trump’s Walk Of Fame star was awarded to him in 2007.

  • Sir Ian McKellen had this epic put down for President Donald Trump

Sir Ian McKellen had this epic put down for President Donald Trump

    “He’s so illiterate”

The acting legend, Sir Ian McKellen who was featured in our Twitter Powerlist for actors, was asked by CNN what he thought of Donald Trump and his legacy of being a TV star. Well, McKellen didn’t hold back and showed, some incredible insight into the President’s controversial use of Twitter.

Taking aim at the 45th President of the USA, McKellen said, “He’s so illiterate. He displays his inadequacies every time he opens his mouth, I’m afraid. And every time he tweets… Dictators and leaders have taken advantage of the mass media ever since it was available to them. Whether it was the radio, advertising, and now television or film. And he’s the master of the television, you have to grant him that… It seems to me, as an outsider, that what he enjoys most in life is not power, but fame.”

In the wide-ranging interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, actor Sir Ian McKellen discussed his activism in the LGBT community, his views of President Trump and being named for a knighthood by Margaret Thatcher – one of her last acts as Prime Minister.

McKellen tells Amanpour how he recalls being in Paris watching Margaret Thatcher’s resignation, when he received a call from Downing Street asking if he would accept a knighthood. After saying he would “think about it”, McKellen tells CNN that Thatcher appeared just moments afterwards, making the offer virtually one of her last acts as leader of the country.

Having previously backed anti-gay legislation such as Section 28, McKellen tells CNN that the offer of a knighthood was a significant gesture: “The world actually was changing, and [Thatcher] could not control it.”

McKellen speaks to Amanpour about the importance of coming out, something he did live on radio at the age of 49 in response to a question on Section 28. Now McKellen tours schools and universities to discuss coming out, telling CNN about some of his experiences and the future of LGBT rights.

Ahead of potentially his final Shakespearean performances in the West End, McKellen addresses comparisons made between President Trump and Richard III, alongside Trump’s use of social media on the world stage.

Due to licensing, his article must be read on our website

Donald Trump is a one-man hate group. If the president were an organization instead of an individual, it would not be a big stretch to define him as a “hate group” under the FBI’s simple definition: “an organization whose primary purpose is to promote animosity, hostility, and malice against persons of or with a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity which differs from that of the members or the organization.” (more…)
