  • FILM REVIEW | Palo Alto

    ★★★★ | Palo Alto

    The directorial debut of Gia Coppola, Palo Alto is an exploration of high school teenagers experimentations with sex, drugs, and alcohol, and it’s an impressive debut.

    Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia Coppola and Nicholas Cage, turns James Franco’s book of the same name into a gritty yet honest movie of a bunch of teenagers in a Palo Alto, California High School. Franco’s book was a series of stories, and Coppola’s film links them up beautifully to create a film that flows, with characters who we could all relate to.

    April (an amazing Emma Roberts) is the class virgin. April’s popular amongst her peers and is a star soccer player. She is also being chased by her creepy soccer coach Mr B., whom she babysits for (Franco, in one of his best roles in years). But Mr B. just doesn’t like April, he also ‘likes’ other girls at the school – he’s a paedophile.

    Meanwhile, Teddy (Jack Kilmer), and Fred (Nat Wolff) are the best of friends, yet it’s Fred unpredictable behaviour that at times becomes explosive and dangerous. And Teddy has a huge crush on April, and he is unaware of her relationship with Mr B.

    Zoe Levin plays Emily. She’s basically the school slut and sleeps with Fred. Teddy, taking a page from Fred’s book, is caught drunk driving and has to perform community service, in a library where Fred visits and proceeds to deface a book. Throw in a mix of more parties and more romances and what you have is a teenage high school film that is made for grownups.

    Coppola gives us a film that is seen through the eyes of the teenagers; their angst, their anxiety, semi-innocence, boredom and excitement. It’s a movie that feels real, with performances to match. Roberts, the niece of Julia, was the perfect choice for the role of April. She’s 23 years old but in the film looks like she’s 16. Kilmer (son of actor Val Kilmer, who has a cameo in the film as a stoned-out stepfather), is also very good as Teddy, tight friends with Fred yet trying to win April’s affections. And Franco is perfect as the lecherous soccer coach – his guilty smile and glint in his eyes say it all – he’s very handsome yet very dangerous. Franco trusted his book to Coppola to turn it into a movie, and she does a fantastic job. Not bad for a first-timer. Francis Ford and Sofia Coppola should watch their back, another Coppola family member is on the way up.

    James Franco, the man who can create publicity by just breathing, has debuted his 90’s inspired blonde look.

    The actor James Franco ,35, has debuted his blonde look in a post on Instragram in which he said, ‘That Late 90s bleached look.’

    And we have to say we’re loving it. He looks like a cross between an NSyncer and Backstreet Boy.

    Franco is currently working on a film called Michael, with Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts. The film is about a pastor who was once gay.

    The actor who starred in Milk, is no stranger to playing gay for the camera, but this is the first time he has played an ‘ex-gay’. The film is based on ‘My Ex-Gay Friend,” a New York Times Magazine article by Benoit Denizet-Lewis, about Michael Glatze, a Christian minister who ‘rejected’ his homosexuality.

    So James Franco is going hell for leather on the homoerotic artwork after he uploads a post saying he’ll suck your wobbly bits – no joke.

    In an Instagram upload the artwork of a man, presumably a self portrait of James Franco says: ‘James Franco 818-300-6254 He Will Answer And He Will Suck Your Dick No Joke.’

    A few days ago, the Milk actor uploaded homoerotic pictures of Seth Rogen. In the last few weeks James Franco has shaken up the Instagram world, with a number of bed time selfies, including this one with fellow actor Keegan Allen.

    In 2013 Franco spoke about the gay rumours surrounding him, he said: ‘One of the things that’s very much part of my public image is the question of my sexuality,” he said, according to Pink News. ‘It’s not something that bothers me in the slightest. It hasn’t gone away and I get asked about it from all sides. It’s partly my doing and partly not my doing.’

    In 2008 Franco starred in a biopic of Harvey Milk and last year his film Interior. Leather Bar was released.

    James Franco’s Instagram is a weird and wonderful thing, giver of naughty pics.

    And James Franco’s latest postings are no detractors from this previous posts. The actor uploaded two more pictures of his artwork of fellow actor Seth Rogen, with the message: ‘MORE SETH ROGEN PAINTINGS – they’re COMING!! PACE GALLERY – NYC OHWOW GALLERY – LOS ANGELES’

    The two paintings are of Seth Rogen in two sexual positions; the first on all fours with the caption: ‘Seth Wants It’ and the second with Seth lying on his front with the caption ‘ Sleepy bear.’

    What does this all mean? We’re not quite sure, but we’re waiting with baited breath.

    James Franco, who is fast becoming the selfie king has just posted this rather sweet pic of him in bed with Keegan Allen. If you’re not sure who Keegan Allen is – he’s most famous for his role on the ABC Family hit series Pretty Little Liars.

     

    Last week Franco showed off his peachy bum on his Instagram account and it’s fast becoming our go to place.

    James Franco, the man who keeps everyone guessing, has revealed his prize asset on Instagram today, showing his peachy bottom for the world!

    He published a picture of his bum and then deleted it. The picture was taken from a deleted scene in his 2000 film Whatever It Takes. Hurrah! and enjoy!

    Ex-Marine, turned model Alex Minsky has also taken the liberty to show off his bottom for the world too!

    Director William Friedkin claims that he had to take his notorious movie Cruising about the gay S&M sub-culture to the US Ratings Board on 50 occasions before they would give him a ‘R’ certificate that permitted it to be shown in cinemas. Whether that is totally true or not is part of the myth around the over-rated but little seen psychological thriller released in 1980 to great controversy. The gay community were its fiercest detractors, but the critics slammed it too.

    To appease the censors Friedkin was forced to cut 44 minutes of what one assumes from his inference were graphic sexual acts. We will never be sure how accurate that is and gay filmmaker Travis Mathews and actor James Franco never bothered to check with Friedkin when they set about trying to re-imagine what the footage may or may not have contained to make this curious new documentary.

    Heterosexual Franco has a growing reputation for his limitless fixation with gay culture and he used his celebrity to pull this very spurious event together. On a day and a half, he and Travis gathered together a bunch of actors – some gay and some straight – stuck them in a warehouse with a script treatment and told them very vaguely to simply get on with it. Franco himself copped out of recreating the main role played by Al Pacino in the original movie and instead persuaded Val Lauren (who has just starred in Franco’s directorial debut ‘Sal’, about yet another gay figure Sal Mineo). Lauren was either alarmingly nervous about playing gay, even for pay, or just following a script, we never really know. But he was uncomfortable to watch, and like others, annoyingly kept repeating that he had only agreed to the project because of James!

    The gay members of the cast had joked that they had only agreed to take part in the hope of seeing Franco naked, but that wasn’t going to happen. He pontificated excessively before the shoot intellectualising about sex, but on the day itself he part filmed a scene where a couple of guys are going full at it, before totally disappearing. Incidentally most of the hour long running time is taken up with all the behind the scenes angst than the actual ‘missing footage’.

    This is not the first vanity project by Franco, He made an experimental film from scraps that Gus Van Sant cut from My Private Idaho, and the main question I can only raise about his intentions with all of this, and the making of this film is, WHY?
