    In deep with Anton Stephans

Anton Stephans is back in the theatre. After a year of non-stop X Factor appearances, tours and general madness he’s back to his first love – Musicals. He’s about to star in the re-staging of Moby Dick! The Musical, at the Union Theatre in London. We meet in the lush surroundings of a posh eatery in central London. He orders a healthy chicken salad and looks intently at me. He has incredibly bright eyes, an infectious naughty cackle and a very open soul. Within seconds we’re talking about dirty mags and sticky floors in Soho… I can tell this is going to go down well.

What kind of student were you?
I was always in trouble. I liked to ask lots of questions, and I liked to explore things, so if we went on a trip to London, me and my friends would go into Soho… I’ve not told anyone this before. My friends and I would sneak off and go in to Soho. It was when it was fun. It was dark. It was seedy. When you went, your feet stuck to the floor. We’d go in, and you know they have all those magazines as well, so we’d go in looking at filthy mags. Of course I was very inquisitive. I wanted to know what people do. I found out.

    So no teacher’s pet then?
No. I don’t think anyone would call me teacher’s pet. I was more the person that would get on your nerves because I would ask so many questions. I just wanted to know more about the world. Although I’d been taught things, things I wanted to know then, they weren’t teaching.

    What’s your happiest memory?
I know this might sound cheesy, but I got home today and my aunt came round to the house, she said, “How are you?” “I’m really happy at the moment. I’m really happy.” I’m happiest when I’m working. I think men should work.

    Really?
Yeah, men should work. If we’re not working, we get up to all sorts. We should be working. The devil makes work for idle hands.

    Are you a happy person?
I’m generally a very positive, happy person. I think nothing is forever. I’ve learned that everything changes. If you hold on to things too tightly and you live in the past, that’s where you become miserable. You can’t fix what you did yesterday. I can’t fix what I just did. I can only go forward and be the best I can be now.

Did you get that from a book?
No, no, no. Let go of your mistakes very quickly. Other people might not. Other people will hold on to them. Let go of the mistakes very quickly and go forward because those things are going to bind you. Those things hold you back. If you let it go, and go, “Okay. I made that mistake. I got it very wrong. If I do this and keep going, it gets better.”

What are you most afraid of?
Not achieving the personal things that I want. In my life, career-wise, things are going incredibly well. Thank God. You got a rabbit’s foot?

Are you more a fan of meeting people for real or dating apps?
Apparently, the guy who looks after all my media has found tons of Grindr profiles of me on it.

What like catfish profiles, pretending to be you?
I’m thrilled. I hope they’re getting lots of dates.

What do you think your porn name would be?
    My porn name? Rex Huns.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be an actor.

What is the most important life lesson you’ve learned?
Love is everything. It is everything. It is the most important thing we can do for each other that doesn’t cost any money.

What if the other person’s a complete asshole?
Love is still good. It’s the best.

If you could invite three famous people to dinner, dead or alive, who would you invite?
Oh, my God. Bette Davis. That would be very fun, I really like Tom Cruise… we’ve been chatting on Twitter and Jennifer Hudson. I love her. I love everything about her.

If you found £50 in the street, what would you do?
    Spend it.

If you found £45,000 in a suitcase and you were in a park by a bench and you were absolutely certain that you weren’t being watched, what would you do?
Oh, my God. Well I’d keep it. I would. I’m sorry. I’m that person. Is that an awful thing to say? I’m going to say the truth. I would keep it. I would probably give some to my friends. People I know who need money. Is that really bad? I’d think it was God’s gift. That, my friends, is God’s gift. That is love in action.

What keeps you awake at night?
The only thing I get up for is to go to the loo these days.

What’s the last thing you do at night?
I write my list every night. I do a list so I know what I’m doing the next day. I’ve never ever, very rarely, have I ticked off all the things on my list that I was supposed to do. That worries me. Sometimes I wake up going, “Really, really should have polished them shoes. Can’t wear them tomorrow!”

What’s on the bucket list. Top three things?
Jumping out of an airplane. I’ve always wanted to get into a car and drive from one end of America to the other. I want to go find music in rare places.

This is slightly personal. When did you first do the deed?
Such a long time ago. I also had sex with lots of girls, too.

How would you describe your sexuality?
I’m gay. I would say having sex with a woman, at the time, was like visiting Paris. Nice place to go. Wouldn’t want to live there. There’s no real centre. Everything’s spread out with lots of attractions.

Men are more like New York….
There it is. There’s Times Square.

Would you change your first experience?
No. I think everything happens right, and it did. I was very lucky. I am still friends with these people.

What song would you have played at your funeral?
Oh, God. I don’t plan on dying ever. That’s the deal, isn’t it?

If you could go back in history, where would you go?
Oh, golly. Well, I wouldn’t go back too far. My folk haven’t been dealt very well. I’d be serving you lunch. I wouldn’t go back too far. I think that’s why I like the now!

What’s the first thing you do every day?
Brush my teeth. Usually these days I’m getting up very early and going to the gym. I’m doing this new thing, well, new to me, called gymming.

    What annoys you about yourself?
I wish that I had more control of my upset at injustice, or when someone says something rude, I wish I just had the ability to let them just do it and get away with it, especially on Twitter or social media.

    What’s your best physical feature?
I don’t know. My smile, I think. Is that a physical feature? That, and I’ve got really great legs!

  • X Factor’s Anton Stephans finds the joy of dick in new show

You may remember Anton Stephans from last year’s X FACTOR, well he’s about to join the cast of Moby Dick – the musical, in London.

Anton Stephans is about to return to the theatre after a life changing year after appearing on last year’s X Factor. The singing star, who came fifth in the 2015 series of ITV’s flagship show is “delighted” to be returning to his first love – musical theatre.

Speaking with THEGAYUK he jokes, “there are loads of dick jokes. I love it… ‘3 years at sea and still no sign of dick…’.”

The musical, which hasn’t played in the UK since 1992, will return to the London stage at the Union Theatre in Southwark – to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary.

The show is about the anarchic and nubile girls of St. Godley’s Academy for Young Ladies. Money for the school has run out and it’s threatened with closure. Determined to save their school from bankruptcy, the resourceful girls, and their unflappable headmistress, played by Anton, come up with a plan to keep the school afloat.

Using whatever they can find, the girls mount an original production as a fundraiser – a musical version of Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, featuring their own headmistress in the coveted role of Captain Ahab.

Speaking about why now was the perfect time for the show to return, Anton said,

We have something utterly hilarious. There are so many bad things going on in the world and it’s good to have a moment where you can laugh your arse off. It’s very sill and very traditionally British. I love all things British like that. That kind of humour, we do it best.

It will be directed and choreographed by double Olivier Award nominee Andrew Wright, who said,

“I am thrilled that Anton and Brenda will be leading our 10 strong company of Moby Dick. Each and every member of the cast is unique as well as supremely talented. I’m so excited to create the madcap world of Moby with them.”

Tickets are available starting at £15 from the Union Theatre Box Office and www.uniontheatre.biz, 020 7261 9876

  • Jonathan Larson to be celebrated in a one-off musical

The Life and Times of Jonathan Larson will be celebrated in the one-off show ‘Seasons of Love’.

Who is Jonathan Larson you might ask? He is the Broadway composer and genius behind the smash hit musical ‘Rent.’ ‘Rent’ is one of the most successful and award-winning musicals of all time. It tells the story of a group of young men and women seeking out a living in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. These young men and women have lots of real life issues that dominate their lives; poverty, drugs, volatile romances, and HIV

Larson composed Rent while at the same time waiting tables at Manhattan’s famous Moonstruck Diner. On the first day of its off-Broadway 1996 preview, Larson died unexpectedly at the age of 35. It was a shocking blow not just to the people close to him, but also to the actors and the rest of the crew. The show then premiered as planned and went on to critical and commercial success. ‘Rent’ was moved to Broadway in April 1996 after an extreme demand for tickets and excellent reviews. It went on to win four Tony Awards, including three for Larson (Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Score). ‘Rent’ went on to become the 10th longest running show on Broadway, closing in June, 2008. Various productions have toured around the world, including three different productions in London. It also went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

It’s not just the story that is poignant and timely for its time, it’s the music that’s most memorable and emotional in telling the story of these young people struggling to survive. Songs such as Seasons of Love, One Song Glory, Light My Candle and Santa Fe all convey the emotion and heartbreak and feelings these young people have and share.

And for only night only, on Monday, January 25th, at London’s Shaftsbury Theatre, several West End performers will sing songs from the show. Debbie Kurup, Krysten Cummings and Damien Flood, all previous cast members of ‘Rent,’ will perform some of the songs and will reflect on their memories of the show. Anton Stephans from the last series of the X Factor will also star in the tribute.

The concert will also include music from some of Larson’s earlier works, ‘Superbia’ and ‘tick, tick… BOOM!.’

  • Anton Stephans Eliminated From X Factor

Anton Stephans has been booted from X FACTOR, but don’t worry you’ll see him again… on the tour.

The soul diva has been eliminated from X Factor after a sing-off against Che Chesterman in last night’s show on ITV.

The star, who recently backed a campaign to allow gay men to give blood, thanked Cheryl and Rita for their support as well as his mentor Simon Cowell.

As he bowed out Anton joked that you would see him again… because he made the X FACTOR tour.

  • X FACTOR Anton Stephans Backs Gay Men Blood Campaign

Singer Anton Stephans has given his support to Blood Pact, a campaign that is fighting for the rights of gay men to be able to donate blood.

As the law currently stands in the UK, gay and bisexual men are forbidden to donate blood if they have had sex in the last 12 months with another man. A rule that many argue is discriminatory. Blood Pact calls the 12-month ban on sex “Discouraging, unrealistic and unfair”.

X FACTOR star Anton Stephans has given his support to the campaign calling the ban “archaic & uneducated” and has even starred their promotional video.

The group is calling for supporters to sign a petition on Change.org which has already attracted 9206 signatures at the time of publish.

  • 8 Things You Did Not Know About X Factor Anton Stephans

He’s wowed judges and audience with his powerhouse vocals, but who is Anton Stephans, we do a little digging to find out a little bit more.

Anton is 45-years-old which makes him the oldest contestant in this year’s series of X Factor. It places him in the overs which gives the smooth toned vocalist a good chance of winning as the previous two winners, Ben Haenow and Sam Bailey have both come from the overs.

He chose the ever so camp song I Am Changing by gay icon Jennifer Hudson. So impressed were the judges by his finals that he winged his way into the finals.

He supports the Blood Pact campaign that backs the rights for gay and bi men being able to give blood without discrimination in the UK. Anton called the existing ban, which forbids the donations from gay men who have had sex within 12 months “archaic & uneducated”.

He’s a big of a recycler. In an interview, he said “I’ve not shopped or bought anything new for years. The shirt that I am wearing during Judges’ Houses is one I bought in 1987 in India.”

He’s become known, affectionately, by the other contestants as “Uncle”. He said he’s become a bit of an agony aunt for them… Which he said was “sweet.”

He’s a cancer survivor. He was given just weeks to live after doctors found a rare melanoma, a rare skin cancer. He was given the all clear 18-months-ago after battling for six years with the disease.

He’s sassy… After Simon Cowell criticised him for pulling weird faces Anton said,

“If you’re in an environment… where lots of people have botox, so your face doesn’t move, that becomes your norm. But if you’re a bit poor like me, and your friends are poor and can’t afford botox, your face kind of moves when you speak.”

    Cue side-eye.

He’s been a backing singer for the likes of Tina Turner and George Michael and he’s massive fan of the late Luther Vandross.
