  • Reading’s Oldest Gay Bar Closes After ACRIMONIOUS Rent Review With Owners

The oldest and only remaining gay bar in Reading, England has closed following, a lengthy and acrimonious rent review and lease renewal with the landlord, Star Pubs.

A statement from the venue’s management on the Wynford Arms’ website placed the blame of the closure on high costs and rent increases from the pub’s owner Star Pubs to a “completely unrealistic level,” amongst other factors including the smoking ban and social media.

The Wynford was the last remaining LGBT space in Reading after The Rising Sun closed in 2014. The Wynford is described as opening in October 1992 and “been there for the community 365 days a year since”.

The cost of the battle has strained the management leaving the business reportedly in a poor financial position. Management also blamed, “the smoking ban, cheap supermarket alcohol, changes in people’s drinking habits, the increasing use of social media to meet people and the fact gay people generally feel comfortable drinking in many more establishments in Reading than used to be the case.”

The Wynford has its last party on the 28th May.

  • Manchester Gay Village Bar Shuts

Eden Bar in Manchester has closed its doors for the final time on Manchester’s famous gay village.

The bar which opened in 2002 shuttered its doors for the last time resulting in the loss of 18 jobs, the Manchester Evening News is reporting.

Insolvency practitioner Steven Wiseglass, of Inquesta, has been appointed a liquidator of SDB Bars.

A statement on the bar’s website, which is still running, reads “Since opening in 2002 we have earned a reputation for combining quality food, exceptional service and a fantastic atmosphere to create an often unforgettable night out.”

The last communication from Eden Bar on Twitter hinted that the bar was closing, but only for a facelift, saying,

“Well folks Eden Manchester is off for a facelift. We will be closed until the beginning of February whilst the old girl has a spruce up. Try not to miss us too much and don’t worry I’m sure you’ll be seeing some familiar faces. Watch this space!!”

The news comes amidst a number of other gay bar closures in 2015, with Manbar and Green Carnation in London announcing their closures.

  • Popstarz Closes The Doors For The Final Time

The gay scene in London was forever changed with the introduction of Popstarz in 1995. Now nearly twenty years later the alternative gay night life brand is being put to bed.

In an interview with PinkNews.co.uk, head DJ and promoter Tommy Turntables lamented the ever decreasing gay scene in London saying, ‘the G-A-Y brand doest appeal to every gay person, in fact I’d say it doesn’t appeal to the majority of gay people, but there’s always new interesting things happening, a lot happens out East, you just have to dig for it more these days.’

The Popstarz night was the brainchild of Simon Hobart, who died nearly 10 years ago. When asked what Simon’s legacy would be, Tommy said, ‘His legacy will be showing the gay scene that not everything has to be the same, cut from the same cloth, that there is brilliance in our differences.’

Advance tickets have sold out, but there will be 400 £20 tickets available at the Coronet on New Kent Road, London from 10pm tonight.
