Out and Proud IVAN MASSOW To Stand For London Mayor In 2015

London Live, the capital’s TV channel, interviewed entrepreneur and gay rights campaigner Ivan Massow on its lunchtime show the Headline Interview.

The gay rights activist and entrepreneur Ivan Massow, 47, exclusively announced that he was standing for London Mayor in 2015. Ivan unsuccessfully ran for London Mayor 2003 as an independent candidate, but today announced that he was standing on behalf of the Conservative party. The former head of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, was once a political adviser to William Hague but left the Conservative Party over section 28 in 2000 and defected to Labour. Ivan recalls his memories of Margaret Thatcher, his argument with Tracey Emin and discusses his four key policies: devolution, transport, housing and a introducing a London card.

Speaking about why he decided to run as mayor Ivan said,

‘Why I’ve got involved this time and what really drove me and rattle my cage, which was watching the devolution debate on television, seeing it all unfold with Scotland and hearing this vilification of London and realising, thinking to myself its great being in London, and I love being a Londoner – but it’s not that great here. We have incredibly expensive accommodation, incredibly expensive travel and food – it’s costly to be here. People travel for maybe an hour to get to work with a sweatshop of the United Kingdom producing vast amounts of money that pay for hospitals and schools all around the country. To hear this thing coming at us all the time made me want to get involved and do something about it.’

  • Icon John Waters: Ben Cumberbatch Too Classy For Me

London Live, the capital’s TV channel interviewed cult filmmaker John Waters.

The Evening Show caught up with the director of the musical Hairspray to talk about which other musicals he would love to work on, thinks Benedict Cumberbatch would be too classy to play his life story, hitchhiking and his famous moustache. John is currently on tour with his stand-up comedy show ‘Carsick: This Filthy World Volume Two Live Comedy. Monologue’.

Speaking about the choices of actors who could play the iconic director, Waters said that Benedict Cumberbatch was a maybe, ‘But I think he’s too classy to play me’ He settles on Steve Buscemi to play him in a movie of his life.

In the interview he is asked what turned him on to musicals, he replied, ‘”Well I was one of the first ones to do it with ‘Hairspray’. I am waiting for ‘Ice Castles’ to be turned into a musical, the early bad films. The failures, not the hits. I would love to work on ‘Mahogany’, the one with Tony Perkins and Diana Ross where she’s fashion designer. That one would be a good musical, yeah. Or ‘Salo’ as a musical. But I like to direct movies. I don’t know if I’m a theatre director. I learnt a lot when we went through Hairspray on stage in New York. It’s just one master shot with no cutaways and it’s a completely different style of acting.’

And which one of his film is his favourite? He replied, ‘I love all of them because somehow I got them made. How I got any of them made is a miracle. I guess ‘Hairspray’ because that’s the one that did the very best although ‘Cry Baby’ may have been seen by more people because Johnny Depp was on TV all over the world. I like them all so maybe I root for the ones that didn’t do so well at the box office like ‘A Dirty Shame’ that was about sex addiction and starred Johnny Knoxville and Tracy Ullman.’

    So what offends the director?

‘Bad romantic comedies, stupid racism, lots of things shock me. But dumbness shocks me. But people can be uneducated and be smart and really funny… more funny actually. They’re more fun. Over education can make you really dull.’

And his thoughts on pubic hair?
‘I’m sad that young people don’t have pubic hair anymore. There’s no crabs anymore. I hope it’s coming back otherwise they look like adult babies and that’s not a look I like.’

The Evening Show, every weekday at 6.30 – 7.30pm on London Live – Freeview 8, YouView 8, Sky 117 and Virgin 159

  • DRAG QUEENS OF LONDON: Silver Summers’ Shock As Dad Revives Relationship

London Live, the new 24/7 entertainment channel for London last night premiered the latest episode of Drag Queens of London, which saw Silver Summers (Bobby Houston) and his best friend Vanity Von Glow (Thom Glow) make a trip up to Bobby’s home town of Glasgow to perform in drag in front of his family for the very first time.

Bobby is unsure if his family will come and if they do, will they proud? Clearly one of the most important gigs of his life, Bobby is undoubtedly nervous and is delighted to spot his mum sister and brother in law in the audience – though his dad is nowhere to be found. Tears of joy and sadness are shared amongst all the family, and Bobby cannot hide the disappointment. The episode ends with Bobby’s heart-breaking realisation that his dad cannot accept and support his own son’s career choice and it seems unlikely that his dad will ever watch him perform on stage.

London Live can exclusively reveal that, after watching the first episode which aired last week (Tuesday 22nd April), Bobby’s dad reached out and said how proud he is of his son, and the pair have now reconciled.

Bobby said “I was really surprised when I heard he’d watched the show last week. And when he got in touch to tell me he was proud of me it literally meant the world to me. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t anticipate it. It means so much to me. He’d always appreciated that I wanted to be a performer, but he never could have imagined that I’d find success as a girl. My Dad was born and bred in Glasgow. He’s such a Scottish Dad – ultra masculine – working in construction.

We’ve been through stuff just like in every father and son relationship, but it’s been good in adult life. I think it’s difficult for him to see me in drag because I make such a convincing girl. He wants to see me as his son. It’s because of that he never allowed himself to watch my YouTube videos or see me perform. He just really didn’t get me performing as a drag queen. I’m so so happy that he now gets it and he’s proud of me, his son”.

Head of Programming, Jonathan Boseley said

“The entire team at London Live are delighted that the show has helped Bobby Houston revive his relationship with his dad. Drag Queens of London is compelling, funny and hugely entertaining and we are so proud that the show is making a huge impact and most of all it is literally changing lives.”
