ALAN CUMMING | Male circumcision should be treated the same way as FGM

Actor Alan Cumming has slammed the routine mutilation of males, saying that male circumcision should be treated in the same way as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Speaking in The Guardian the actor said that the removal of the foreskin should be treated in the same way that female genital mutilation is treated.

Currently, in the UK, the practice of religious or cultural FGM is illegal, while the religious or cultural circumcision for males is still sanctioned by the Government. It is thought that less than 20 per cent of males are circumcised in the UK.

In the US, circumcision is a far more widespread operation usually performed on babies – with no real medical necessity. It is thought that around 75 per of the US’s males are circumcised, regardless of religious or culture.

Alan told the Guardian that when he started to have sex with people in the US, he was made to feel “weird and freakish” because, like the majority of Brits, he is uncircumcised.

He revealed, “I never thought anything about my foreskin, and then I came to America and I was having sex and people would just be gasping because they’d never seen a foreskin before”

He brandished the procedure ‘mutilation” and said,  “It’s genital mutilation. And I think people say: ‘Oh, that’s hysterical.’ “But we do it to girls and it’s called genital mutilation.”

He also believes that circumcising for religious purposes is “ridiculous” saying, “We choose to keep doing some things and we just let the weirdest things go.”

    Circumcision in the UK

In 2018 a mother planned to sue a doctor who performed a circumcision on her son without her permission. Her son was allegedly taken by the son’s paternal grandmother for the procedure. The mother’s lawyer, Saimo Chahal QC said at the time, “While some people with religious beliefs see circumcision as normal, there are others who see it as an unnecessary assault which can be physically and psychologically harmful.”

The doctor and the child’s grandparents were all arrested in June 2017.

The Crown Prosecution Service decided it would not take any further action in October 2017.

The doctor, Dr Mehat, who performed the procedure was suspended for a month after a tribunal in 2019.

  • LGBT Peoples We’d Like To See As The Next Bond

Much is being said about who is destined to be the next Bond and well here at THEGAYUK we’d like to see a bit of diversity…

So if Spectre is Daniel Craig’s last film in the Bond franchise and the job is up for grabs, we’ve got some suggestions from our very own community.

    1) Paris Lees

Although we can’t find her age (how you do this in this modern age of Wikipedia, Google and FB is a dark art – something that could come in handy for a Bond), so we’re guessing she’s mid to late 20s, Paris Lees might be a little too young to play Bond, but how magnificent would she be. Outspoken, witty, dresses to kill,  well connected and knows how to mix a good cocktail we’re told.

    2) Andrew Hayden-Smith, 32

Swave, British, easy on the eye and Northern – we’ve yet to have a Tyne And Wear bred Bond and we think it’s about time. He’d be the youngest Bond to play the part if he got it, but since Bonds need to last a decade we could definitely see Hayden-Smith maturing into the role nicely.

    3) Sue Perkins, 46

Sue Perkins’ got the smarts and the sense of humour. She exudes confidence, which is a must for any Bond.

Bond, Sue Bond – no wait doesn’t she already exist?

    4) Martyn Andrews, 36,

Former cover star for THEGAYUK, Martyn is an international man having travelled the world extensively. He’s multi-lingual and a genius when it comes to Russian politics having served at a journalist for RT for nearly 10 years. At over 6’3″ he’d be one of the tallest Bonds to date.

    5) Wentworth Miller, 43

The perfect age for a Bond – plus Wentworth Miller’s got that whole prison thing going for him.

Plus he looks amazing in a suit – so what more do you really need?

    6) Alan Cumming, 51

Scottish born Alan Cumming, showed his Machiavellian side in The Good Wife, we think Alan could definitely pull off a gay bond. At 51 he may be a little too old – as Bonds should ideally last about 10 years in the role – which means by his last film he’d be into his 60s. He wouldn’t be the first Scot to play Bond, rather famously Sean Connery embodied the role and is considered one of the best Bonds ever.

    7) Asifa Lahore

Can you imagine audience reactions to Britain’s most famous Muslim Drag Queen as Bond. It gives us shivers now, which is why we’re nominating her for the role. Asifa could be her own Bond girl as well – saving money on the budget.

How’s about a Welsh Bond? Physically fit, a man’s man and knows a thing or to about the important of blending in with your crowd. Although Bond often works alone you need a man who knows the importance of teamwork.

    9) John Partridge, 44

He’s got the looks and he’s the perfect age. EastEnders’ bad gay boy would be perfect for James Bond. Plus he looks divine all suited and booted. Aside from the perfect look, he’s got a heart of gold and he loves his mother – we’d like to see more of this fluffy side to bond.

    10) Seann Miley Moore, 26

Hey if we’re going to totally f*ck with the heteronormative brand of James Bond we might as well suggest Seann Miley Moore. The X Factor star moved from Sydney, Australia to London to make his dream come true, proving that he’s ready to move mountains to get the job done.

He wouldn’t be the first Aussie to take the part, George Lazenby played Bond in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

  • FILM REVIEW | Any Day Now

    ★★★★★ | Any Day Now

So, here’s the thing, I can be an old, hard cynical fart when I want to be – but occasionally, just occasionally along comes something that makes me weep like a baby.

This film is one of those things.

What starts out as a simple story of love and acceptance quickly turns into one of bigotry and spite – leading to an unexpected ending. Based on a true story, this is one emotional roller-coaster.

The storyline is simple, boy meets boy, boy blows boy in front seat of car, Rudy (Alan Cumming) is a low rent drag queen/singer, Paul (Garret Dillahunt) is a closeted lawyer – and these are our two main characters. Set in Los Angeles in 1978, Rudy lives in a flea pit apartment block, and when his drug addicted neighbour is arrested and sent to jail, the twosome take in her teenage son Marco (Isaac Leyva) and become the family unit they all want and need.

However, this is the late ’70s, and their family soon draw the wrong kind of attention, and then the prejudice kicks in. A biased legal system, people perceptions of gay life and children – a far cry from the current ads being run by several councils offering fostering with images of smiling gay or lesbian couples as images of happy families.

It highlights a time when it was “in the child’s best interest” to be placed with a convicted drug addict, rather than a loving same sex couple. When a downs syndrome child may be better off incarcerated in an institution rather then even consider that a gay couple could give him the love and caring he needs.

There are some lovely set pieces in the film, the loving couple Rudy and Paul portray, the stories Marco needs to sleep (always with a happy ending), his love of donuts and Isaac’s acting ability – the heart wrenching scene when he cries himself to sleep as he can’t go home.

A strong cast and crew make this one of the best films of its kind in a long time with Travis Fine doing a great job as director, writer and producer.

My advice, buy a big bag of Minstrels and an entire box of Kleenex before hitting play – enjoy the film, and the cry!
