  • Harvey Milk speechwriter and and author Frank M Robinson dies, 87

Frank M Robinson, who was a renowned science fiction and thriller writer has died at the age of 87 today.

Born in 1926, Frank M. Robinson moved to San Franciso in the 1970s where he became a a speechwriter for Harvey Milk. He also had a small role in the film Milk.

He was the author of 16 books, 3 of which were made into films, The Power, The Glass Inferno (made into The Towering Inferno) and The Gold Crew.

Dustin Lance Black paid tribute to the author saying, ‘This morning FRANK M. ROBINSON left this world. He was Milk’s speech writer, an acclaimed sci-fi author and was like a father to me. To say the earth feels made of quicksand lately makes it sound too solid. Frank, I’ll miss your thunderous laughter, your protective love and your razor sharp writer’s mind. #HarveyMilk’

A note on Frank’s website notes meeting Dustin Lance Black and the making of Milk saying, ‘An amazing experience. They had a guy picked out to play me–met him later on–and then Sean Penn, Gus van Sant (director), and Lance Black (screenwriter–smart, talented, a workhorse and friendly) came over to the house and Penn interviewed me for an hour and a half about Harvey (I used to be Harvey’s speechwriter). Afterward, took them all to dinner at an upscale Burmese restaurant on Castro. Sean had to leave early and I entertained Gus and Lance with tales about Rogue and Playboy. Naturally they were fascinated (translation: bored stiff).’

  • 6 reasons you need a gym buddy

Your holiday is booked and with healthy living being promoted more than ever there has never been a better time to kick-start your fitness routine at the gym.

Your holiday is booked and with healthy living being promoted more than ever there has never been a better time to kick-start your fitness routine at the gym.

For some reason you’re finding it a bit of a slog, and no matter how good your intentions the weight isn’t shifting and the muscles aren’t building as you’d hoped. Your symptoms are incredibly common, you’re having a gym buddy deficiency and it’s ruining your chances of achieving your summer body goals. There are proved reasons as to why exercising with a friend can help you to achieve your goals more effectively, here’s just six to get you thinking.

    1. Working together
A goal shared is a goal halved, or something like that – basically the idea here is that if you share your fitness goal with a gym buddy it’s going to be a hell of a lot easier to realise that dream. Whether it be flat abs or bulging muscles, finding a gym buddy who’s goals are similar to yours is key.

    2. Planning together
Creating a schedule together will really help you to work towards your dream body, but being realistic is also necessary. Sit down and plan your week together, working out when you can both fit in a work out (always together, remember) will ensure you are much more likely to go to the gym, because you know your buddy is there waiting for you.

    3. Sticking at it together
It’s easier to stick to a goal if you’re doing it with someone else so you’re far less likely to avoid a gym session because you’ve been invited to impromptu after-work cocktails on a Tuesday. Give your gym buddy a text to encourage him or her not to skip gym sessions and they can do the same for you – encouraging each other to work together to stick at your schedule.

    4. Bringing a competitive edge
Sometimes a bit of healthy competition is what you need to get you motivated, so if you can see that your gym buddy is shedding the pounds faster than you it’s going to make you want to up your game. If you have someone to compete with you’re far more likely to succeed.

    5. Building your confidence
As well as being your natural competitor, your gym buddy is there to bring you words of encouragement and ultimately help you to feel better about yourself in the process. Spurring each other on whilst lifting weights is one thing but little words or emails f encouragements when you’re not sharing the bench press is also a great way to ensure you both stay focussed on your goals.

    6. Sharing tips
Sometimes the mind boggles when you’re researching gym techniques and fitness plans online. There are so many options, videos, inspirational blogs and online personal trainers out there that it can be really tough to work out what will actually work for you. Having a gym buddy is almost as good as having a personal trainer because they know you and can help you sort the bad from the good advice.
Gym buddies aren’t just a good idea, they’re essential if you want to achieve your goals, providing you with encouragement, support, advice and a shared goal for you both to achieve together in the gym.

Former ASOS Executive Set To Revolutionise Menswear

    Sponsored by The Idle Man

The Idle Man is a new online shopping destination for the twenty-something fashion-savvy man. Tired of the usual offering available on the highstreet and internet stores that sells anything to anyone, The Idle Man founder and ex-head of menswear at ASOS, Oliver Tezcan, set out to create a credible alternative.

Tezcan says: ‘Men are always an after thought in fashion. Men’s ranges are hidden in the basement or plonked on three shelves on the top floor

‘Even online men have not been well catered for. Over the years I had a nagging feeling that the average guy could be serviced better – and that’s what The Idle Man will do.’

Men are more interested than ever in fashion. The growth potential is huge for whoever can create a retail experience that meets their needs. That has never really been done before – but the mission of The Idle Man is to change that.

Understanding the mindset of the male shopper is key: ‘Men, just like women, want to look good,’ Tezcan adds. ‘But that doesn’t mean they shop in the same way. Men are more interested in getting the clothes they want, than trying on everything in the shop.’

With this in mind, the site is designed so that customers can find exactly the look they want with the minimum of fuss: ‘The Idle Man is designed to show men a great look at any price point. Our customers can be confident that they look cool, without having to research the latest from London Fashion Week.’

    Brands at The Idle Man
Buyers at The Idle Man have carefully selected clothing, shoes and accessories from a range of respected menswear brands, supplying Religion, Supremebeing, Mipac, Rains and Farah Vintage to name a few.

For the Autumn/Winter 2014 season, they will also see brands such as Levi’s, Converse, Vans, Herschel, Cheap Monday and Eastpak joining The Idle Man range, as well as the arrival of The Idle Man own-label, which will include core pieces for everyman’s wardrobe.

  • FILM REVIEW | Fruitvale Station

    Fruitvale Station

In the opening sequences using grainy footage from onlookers cellphones we see how this story is going to end. Not long after 2009 has just been welcomed in by this happy boisterous New Year crowd travelling on the BART train in Oakland, California when Oscar Grant, a 22 year old African-American is shot in the back by a white Transit Police Officer.

Oscar and his friends had been hauled off the train at Fruitvale Station as suspects in a fight that had just occurred, the fact that the men who had antagonised them were all white and were not pursued by the angry and aggressive police presence was no accident.

In this stunningly powerful narrative the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant III is sadly a very true fact. What follows next is a dramatisation of what Oscar was up to the day he was killed.

He was apparently no saint, but after a short time behind bars for dealing in marijuana, he was determined to make a go of things. When he loses his grocery store job and is almost desperate enough to start selling pot again, he throws away his stash as he knows that another arrest would take him away from his girlfriend and young daughter who is totally devoted too. It is in fact the women in his life, including his church-going mother, that are his driving force but in his determination to be the ‘man’ of the family he hides his financial struggles from them all behind a web of lies.

It is a totally compelling movie on every level and even more so when you appreciate that this is the debut of writer/director Ryan Coogler, a 27 year old African-American from Oakland fresh out of Film School.

What Coogler does so brilliantly is show that behind the statistic of another black man needlessly killed by an undisciplined white authority figure, that this was a very real person just at the start of what should have been a long happy life. There is plenty of emotion in his take on events, and very noticeably, no rage at all.

Michael B Jordan (The Wire) turns in a terrifically sensitive portrayal as the good-natured Oscar, Melonie Diaz (Be Kind Rewind) is his supportive girlfriend Sophina, and in a powerhouse performance Octavia Spencer as Mum proves that her Oscar win last year (The Help) was no fluke. And credit to Forest Whittaker for taking this project on and producing it.

In the light of the aftermath of the recent Trayvon Martin killing, this heartbreaking story has even more resonance now. The saddest aspect of all is that we know that many more young men will still needlessly lose their lives simply because of the color of their skin.

Winner of Awards at both the Sundance & Cannes Film Festivals, this is totally unmissable, and easily one of the best ‘real
