  • Listen as a gay man talks about “shock” cure given by 1970’s NHS

    A gay man who was given electric shock treatments on the NHS in the 1970s has spoken to BBC Radio 5.

    In the 1970s the National Health Service (NHS) offered a ‘cure’ to homosexuality in the guise of ‘Electric Shock Avoidance Therapy’.

    ‘John’ from Birmingham talks openly to Victoria Derbyshire about the ‘false hope’ the treatment gave him. The 69-year-old said the treatment had made him feel that he was, ‘going to pass from this life without ever having a full relationship with a human being.’

    Homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967, 1981 in Scotland and 1982 in Northern Ireland.

    In 1973 homosexuality was declassified as a mental illness in the UK.

  • European airlines suspend flights to Israel

    More airlines have joined the suspension of flights in and out Israel as fear of missile launches rise.

    A number of US carriers have already suspended their flights to Israel, but now some European airlines have followed suit after a warning from the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA, said it “strongly recommends” that airlines should avoid flights to and from Tel Aviv.

    Air Canada, Air France, Alitalia, Austrian Airlines, easyJet, Germanwings, KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss have all cancelled flights to Israel for two days.

    British Airways has said that is, ‘closely monitoring the situation’. Their flights are currently operating as scheduled.

    Concern has mounted about the safety of aircraft flying over war zones since the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which killed all 298 people on board. On Tuesday Delta Airlines diverted a flight with 273 passengers and seventeen crew members, after reports of a ‘rocket or associated debris near the airport in Tel Aviv.’

    Amongst the victims of flight MH17, it is reported that there were at least 6, but up to 100 HIV/AIDS experts who were on their way to the 20th International AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia.

    A candlelight vigil was held for the victims of MH17 and HIV/AIDS in Melbourne in Federation Square on the 22nd July 2014.

    The Foreign Office in the UK has issued a strong warning saying, ‘The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to Gaza. The British Information and Services Office in Gaza is closed until further notice. The FCO can no longer offer any consular assistance in Gaza. Rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and Israeli air strikes on Gaza continue.’

    After an emergency landing yesterday, Tom Daley and partner Dustin Lance Black are finally on their way home after their flight made an emergency landing in Russia.
    Tom Daley, and partner Dustin Lance Black along with a reported 300 other passengers and crew had been left stranded in Russia over night after the Virgin Atlantic flight from Shanghai had to make an emergency landing, due to a ‘technical issue’.
    Tom and Dustin both uploaded frightening footage yesterday of thousands of litres of fuel being dumped somewhere over Mongolia, before the Airbus A340 touched town in a small town called Irkutsk in south-eastern Russia.Taking to social networks, Dustin Lance Black, an award winning screenwriter and activist said, ‘Last minute shopping in Irkutsk… we hope! #Siberia’Tom Daley said, ‘We are coming home!!!! Flight leaves in around an hour 😀 can’t wait to be back home! Thanks for working hard to get us home @VirginAtlantic’A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic said, ‘Virgin Atlantic can confirm that the VS251 travelling from Shanghai to London Heathrow has diverted to Irkutsk Airport, Russia, as a precautionary measure due to a technical issue. Safety and security is always our top priority.’The aircraft is currently on the ground and our customers are being looked after by our cabin crew. Our priority now is to ensure our customers resume their journey as soon as possible. The airline would like to thank passengers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused. ‘A few months ago, Dustin was involved in a separate airline incident, where the landing gear of the flight he was on failed.

  • Speaker John Bercow: Time for the Commonwealth to do more for LGBTs

    The Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow MP, in advance of the opening of the Commonwealth Games on 23 July, welcomed competitors from across the Commonwealth and wished the organisers a successful Games.

    As Glasgow readies itself for the Commonwealth Games, activists and allies are asking the public to remember that in 4 out of 5 countries within the Commonwealth it is still illegal to be LGBT.
    He commented,

    ‘I would like to offer the warmest welcome to the athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It is a fantastic sporting occasion, which I hope will be well supported, and it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the Commonwealth.’

    Mr Bercow is a keen sports player and recently published a book about male tennis players. He is an enthusiast of football and tennis, is an Arsenal season ticket holder and was a junior tennis champion. He regards it as part of his role in representing the House of Commons to support British sports, whenever possible.

    Commenting on the issue of LBGT rights, discrimination and the Commonwealth Games, John Bercow MP continued,

    ‘Sadly, there might be world-class athletes who will not be able to compete in the Games, as they will have been discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality; shamefully, it is estimated that 4 out of every 5 countries in the Commonwealth criminalise homosexuality. Surely, it is time for the Commonwealth to do more to support lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual people, to ensure they are not discriminated against, no matter where they live?’

    COMMONWEALTH HOMOPHOBIA
    Peter Tatchell has urged Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister to condemn the ‘Commonwealth homophobia’. In a statement Tatchell said, ‘We are asking Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, to express his grave concern at the persecution of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) people in 42 of the 53 Commonwealth member states. We urge him to appeal to all participating countries to adhere to Article 7 of the Commonwealth Games Federation constitution, which prohibits all discrimination,

    ‘Countries that refuse to support Article 7 – or that perpetuate discrimination in access to sports facilities, training camps or team selection – should be barred from participating in the Commonwealth Games. If they are not prepared to abide by Article 7 they have no right to come to Glasgow or future Commonwealth Games.’

  • Major airlines cancel flights to Israel over missile fears

    Major airlines across the globe have started to pull flights from Israel over missile fears.

    Delta, United and US Airways has confirmed that it has cancelled two flights to and from Tel Aviv, whilst American, KLM and British Airways have confirmed that they are monitoring the situation.

    A statement on the Delta Airlines website said, ‘Delta flight 468, a Boeing 747 from JFK with 273 passengers and 17 crew, diverted to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Tuesday after reports of a rocket or associated debris near the airport in Tel Aviv. Delta is working to reaccommodate these customers.’

    The move to cancel flights has come amid the concerns over the safety of civilian aircraft flying over war zones. Last week a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 was downed killing all 298 passengers and crew on board.

    Amongst the victims, it is reported that there were at least 6, but up to 100 HIV/AIDS experts who were on their way to the 20th International AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia. On board was Joep Langer who was a pioneer of HIV research. He was killed along with his partner Jacqueline.

  • Bear icon Chris Miklos dies aged 40

    Bear Icon and Model Chris Miklos has died in his sleep aged 40.

    The Dallas Voice is reporting that the bear Icon and model Chris Miklos has died aged just 40. He had become a noted model for the bear community.

    Chris Miklos reportedly died of a heart attack in Dallas, Texas on Saturday night, although these reports are unconfirmed.

    At the time of his death Chris Miklos had been promoting a Kickstarter project for a 2015 calendar.

  • Suspect In Double Homicide Of Two Gay Men In Seattle Arrested

    The man who is suspected of killing two young gay men in Seattle has been arrested following a cross-country man-hunt that ended in New Jersey.

    Two men in their twenties were shot in the head and killed in Seattle after a night out with friends in June.

    30-year-old Ali Muhammed Brown was charged with the shootings, but had been on the run, until police in New Jersey managed to capture him just days ago.

    Initial autopsies suggest that the victims were ‘essentially executed’ said Senior Deputy Prosecutor Wyman Yip.

    Prosecutors say the two victims, Ahmed Said, 27 and Dwone Anderson-Young 23, were targeted and lured via a social app.

    Brown was arrested in New Jersey, without incident.

    If convicted of the two counts of aggravated first-degree murder, Brown could face the death penalty.

    ‘It is evident that the murders were premeditated and unprovoked and part of a common scheme or plan’ noted Senior Deputy Prosecutor Wyman Yip in the charging documents.

  • Dustin Lance Black In Aircraft Landing Gear Failure Drama

    Award-winning screenwriter and LGBT activist feared for his life after a landing gear failure on his flight to San Francisco.

    Dustin Lance Black, 39, who is currently dating Olympic diver Tom Daley has written how tears hit his script as the Captain announced on his United Airlines flight to San Francisco that the land gear had malfunctioned.

    ‘Quiet #tears hit my script when the captain announced the landing gear broke on my #UnitedAirlines flight to SF. Aborted landing. Circles. Rough touch down. #ALIVE!’ DLB wrote via his Instagram.

    Earlier in the month, DLB spoke opening about the leaked sex pictures of himself and a former boyfriend saying,

    ‘If you invade my privacy, this is what you will find,” he wrote. ‘I have sex. It brings me joy, fosters intimacy and helps love grow…I am the victim of this “scandal”, not the perpetrator.

    ‘People have been so incredibly supportive.

    ‘It was about time [I addressed the picture leak]. I always just sort of think it’ll disappear, but it came up again.

    ‘Cleve Jones, who’s in Milk, is like a mentor to me, and he said, ‘Girl, you need just to say it and let people know what’s up’, so I went ahead and did that. It was good to finally get it done.’

    Reports are coming in that Diver Tom Daley and partner Dustin Lance Black have been involved in an emergency landing in Russia.

    Tom Daley and partner Dustin Lance Black have uploaded pictures showing that their Virgin Atlantic flight, which was carrying 301 people, had to make an emergency landing in Russia.
    On Instagram Tom Daley wrote,
    ‘Just had to make an emergency landing in Irkutsk, Russia on the way back from Shanghai. Here’s the pic of the fuel dump before landing.’
    The worrying picture shows the Virgin A340 jet from Shanghai dumping fuel as it prepared to emergency land in Russia. Virgin Atlantic have an incredible safety record and the Airbus A340 is one of the safest long-range airliners in the world.
    Dustin Lance Black wrote, ‘EMERGENCY LANDING into a Russian town. This was our view over Mongolia. #VirginAtlantic #ScaryAsHell’
    Video from Dustin Lance Black’s account shows thousands of litres of fuel being dumped, over Mongolia before the jet was put down in the Russia town of Irkutsk, which is in southeastern Siberia.

    A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic said,

    A few months ago Dustin Lance Black was involved in another emergency landing, when the landing gear of the aircraft he was in failed.

     

    Writing from inside the plane, Dustin Lance Black said,
