  • Russia Wants To Ban Gay Emojis

Russian media watchdog is considering whether to banning “gay” emojis under the “propaganda” law.

The media watchdog in Russia is considering a ban on same-sex “gay” emojis if an investigation finds that they are breaking the non-traditional relationship law, which was introduced in 2013.

Mikhail Marchenko, a Russian senator claims that the same-sex couple emojis which were recently released on Apple’s latest operating system for its iPhones are breaking the “propaganda” law. The new emoji pack includes a vast array of different pairings of same-sex and opposite couples as well as same-sex parents with children.

The law which was passed in 2013 forbids the promotion of “non-traditional” sexual relationships to anyone under the age of 18.

Last year Facebook launched a number of gay pride icons for users to celebrate Pride season.

  • Apple Plans To Launch Gay Emoticons

In a move which should please everyone who isn’t a WASP, Apple has announced plans to release a diverse selection of emojis including gay and lesbian families.

According to sources, Apple plans to release around 300 more emojis which include gay couples as well as male and female faces in six different skin tones. The ethnically diverse icons include a Santa in the 6 colours.

The current icons do include gay men and women, however, no black faces. There is one Asian man wearing a Chinese cap and an Indian man wearing a turban.

The new icons will now include LGBT Families including same-sex parents with one of two children. Gay characters first appeared in the emoji menu in 2012.

The emojis will be made available later in the year with the release of iOS 8.3.

  • TECH REVIEW | iPhone 5s

So, I managed to get my sweaty little apple-fan fingers on an iPhone 5S for a test drive.

Its about blinkin’ time too – like a lot of people, my time is nearly here for an upgrade of my handset, the new ones are out and I couldn’t wait. My trusty 4S is on its last legs, scratched and battle scared from a life of Facebook, Twitter and blog updates….it needs and deserves a rest.

However, and this is a first for me, I was a little let down. I skipped the 5, thinking that as I was tied to contract, I’d wait and see what was available when my contract finally ended.

I think, having read reviews, headlines, seen the ads, lapped up the keynote speeches, I was expecting something radical but didn’t get what I wanted.

In terms of design, it isn’t a major departure of whats gone before – which isn’t a bad thing, but it seems that the minor changes in design are changes for changes sake? The split into 5S and 5C doesn’t make much sense for me. The garish colours of the 5C don’t appeal, and the 5S seems a smidge ’80’s. I have to admit to being a little unsure of the size – its feels like it going down the route of others in trying to increase screen size at the sake of portability? It isn’t an iPad, mini or otherwise, so please Apple, don’t make the 6 any bigger. This is a phone, and I for one hope it stays a phone size!

The 5S I got to try out was the white screen one, perfect for my stilettos on a Saturday night. Its nice enough but, and heres my big issue, the major update from Apple was the iOS, with its overhaul, new fresh looks, new icons, new features – and all these are available on my old handset. I have these, I can play with them – and don’t need to fork out for a handset that offers nothing else. I really don’t care about fingerprint technology – I’ve seen the Man From Uncle (as your dad) and don’t really care that much! If my phone is stolen or lost, I can track, wipe and lock it from my iPad or MarBook (told you I was an apple geek).

If I’m honest, there simply isn’t anything radical enough here to make me want to upgrade at a cost. Give me a free handset and I’ll upgrade tomorrow – who wouldn’t, but with phone companies increasingly charging you for handsets and an arm and a leg for data, is it worth it?

I wonder when we’ll get to the point where there isn’t anything new they can do with phones? We hear stories about intelligent glass phones, simple screens without cases as the tech is inside the screen. We have Google glasses, so why not glasses that act as a phone as well? We have watches that link to phones…so why not a simple watch that does it alone? Who knows where we’ll end up – maybe by then I’ll be a true grumpy old man and have given up trying to keep up and want a phone that does something radical, like make phone calls?

    The Positive
    ▪ It’s sleek
    ▪ It’s shiny
    ▪ It’s Apple

    The Negatives
    ▪ Nothing new
    ▪ Silly new charging pins!
    ▪ too big for my phone case

Price: iPhone 5s, (white) available from £79 on Vodafone Red 4G-ready price plans for £47 per month
Or Sim Free available from AMAZON from £508

Maybe I’m just too used to Apple breaking rules, creating ground breaking designs, products that change your life – and lately they haven’t done this. Now, they may be consolidating their business, building on what’s gone before and ensuring that Mr Jobs legacy continues with a strong business base, solid products, and worldwide appeal. However, this former garage start-up seems to be more about big business and tying you into its products than innovation and interest. They make more and more upgrades, and make more and more of their older items obsolete in the process and this worries me.

  • OPINION | The issue with dictionaries’ definition of the word gay

There is one thing that really annoys me. It doesn’t quite turn me into an aggressive homosexual but it doesn’t half infuriate me. The offending thing is when the word gay is used as a synonym for stupid, lame, rubbish or sh**, basically.

It was with great disappointment that I came across an update on this fine magazine’s Facebook page that exposed the dictionary listing of the word gay on Apple’s computer operating systems. It lists the word gay as being “foolish” and “stupid”. I will, of course, state that it has the usual definitions of gay listed, but this is a worrying development, particularly at a time when the word is used negatively so casually amongst young people (and some older ones too).

As you’ll pick up in some of my previous writings for THEGAYUK, I run an LGBTQ youth support charity and work hard to educate young people on the use of the word gay. I’ve spoken to many youth groups, parents, and professionals about the way in which gay is flung around as an insult or put down, and spent much time educating people on how to use the word appropriately or challenge its negative use. I feel that the way gay is listed in Apple’s dictionary goes some way to undo or undermine those efforts.

Apple is not the only offender, though; the Oxford Dictionary, although putting the words “often offensive” in front, also list the word gay as meaning “foolish” or “stupid”. In general, I am not easily offended but I find the dictionary listing unacceptable. Perhaps it is true that dictionaries should list the way in which words are used rather the way they should be, but I am still uncomfortable with this definition. I have actually referred young people to the dictionary to look up what gay actually means. Now it’s defined as meaning “foolish” or “stupid” I will no longer be able to do that.

In Apple’s defence, I am aware that their dictionary entries come from several different sources and that it must be difficult to keep tabs on every entry. Apple is also known for being LGBT friendly so they can perhaps be let off for this oversight. I have confidence in Apple removing that particular definition or at least making an alteration now that they have been made aware of it. However, as for the Oxford Dictionary, I am a bit more disappointed. In my view gay does not equate to being foolish or stupid. It refers to sexuality or being light hearted and care free. Despite mentioning that the negative use is often offensive, it doesn’t make it an acceptable definition. To use the word in the way that these dictionaries define it, they are being pretty gay themselves.

  • Apple’s and Oxford University Press dictionary defines gay as “foolish” and “stupid”

Apple’s dictionary lists the word ‘gay’ to mean Foolish and Stupid in software found on its computer operating systems.

The computer and Smartphone giant has landed itself in hot water after it was discovered that the word gay is described in its dictionary as Foolish and Stupid.

The description was found after a 15 year-old student in Massachusetts in the US discovered the pejorative use of the word gay during an assignment for school. The student, Becca Gorman has started a campaign to ask Apple to remove the offensive definition reports the MetroWest Daily News.

In a letter to the company, Becca Gorman, whose parents are lesbians, asked Apple’s CEO Tim Cook to remove the informal explanation.

“I assume that you are a pro-gay company, and would never intend for any one of your products to be as offensive as this definition was.’ Gorman wrote.

“Even with your addition of the word informal, this definition normalises the terrible derogatory twist that many people put on the word ‘gay’.”

Within an hour a representative called Ms Gorman:

“They told me it’s so hard to track the dictionaries they’re getting sources from, and that they were also shocked themselves.”

Apparently, Apple sources its Dictionary’s from four different sources.

Speaking to TheGayUK a spokesperson for the company said:

“We license our content from the Oxford University Press, which is acknowledged in our preferences panel within the app.”

In June this year a petition drew attention to an app available on Apple’s app store, Setting Captives Free, which offered users a ‘gay cure’. The app was removed from the app store within 24 hours after 50,000 people signed the petition.

The Oxford University Press (OUP) Dictionary also defines the word gay as foolish, stupid, or unimpressive, however the OUP uses the caveat: ‘informal, often offensive’

The British English Dictionary within the Dictionary App does not contain the Stupid or Foolish definition.

  • NEWS: Your iPhone Can Be Unlocked With Your Penis

In today’s high-brow news, a video has emerged showing the brand new iPhone 5s being unlocked by a penis.

In what was hailed as a break-through technology for smartphones, the new fingerprint unlocking system on apple’s brand new iPhone 5s seems to have a slight flaw, in that you can open your iPhone with more than just your thumbprint.

TheGayUK discovered a video from Manhunt of one such appendage which can open your brand new 5s. Other pictures, which have surfaced on the net show iPhone owners being able to unlock their phones with nipples and a cat’s paw.

  • Apple removes “gay cure” app

A massive petition calling on Apple and Google to remove a ‘gay cure’ app has been partially successful as iTunes removes the application.

The app, called Setting Captives Free, which offers to cure users of their homosexuality, was a free download available for iPhone users and people with an Android phone.
Yesterday iTunes seemingly removed the app after over 50,000 people signed a petition at AllOrg.org.
However the app still remains available on the Google Play store.

  • Petition to Apple and Google to pull “gay cure” app reaches 26,000

An app that offers users to cure their gayness, is currently available to download from the Apple and Google Android stores.

AllOut.org have published a petition which calls for the iPhone maker Apple and Google’s Android store to pull the smart-phone app. The petition has already garnered over 26,000 signatures.

A statement from the AllOut website reads,

‘Gay ‘cures’? There shouldn’t be an app for that. But, there’s a new one called “Setting Captives Free,” available in both the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores, meant to teach you how to stop being gay.

It’s a 60-day course that tells gay people they are not “born this way” and offers to help them find “freedom from the bondage of homosexuality.”

These so-called treatments can cause terrible harm to lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people, or anyone forced to try to change who they are or who they love.

Apple and Google have policies against these kinds of apps but so far this one has escaped their notice. Sign now to tell them to drop this and all other gay ‘cure’ apps!’
