COMING OUT: Top 10 Coming Out Songs

In the olden days (I’m talking about G-A-Y at the Astoria), when I used to go out as an excitable newbie gay and was able to wear stomach revealing tees, Pop music was my haven.

Pop music of the late 90s and early 2000s seemed to know my man loving ways and was only to happy to deliver thumping after thumping hit for me to perform my little camp heart out on the sticky floors of that old, fondly missed haunt.

    1) Geri Halliwell, the official gift to gay men delivered ‘Lift Me Up’ / ‘Look At Me’ / ‘Bag It Up’. No list of coming out songs is complete without one Ginger song and she’s given us at least 3. Geri’s debut solo album Schizo-Phonic offered up a plethora of camptastic tunes. I still put on ‘Bag It Up’ from time to time and it still makes me jig. Yes, I said ‘jig’ and I’m owning it.

    2) ‘Get This Party Started’, When Pink slammed onto the scene with this song it almost became a homo chant. “I’m coming out, so you better get this party started’. Its place in the annals of gay culture was cemented when the Dame of Bassey made her almost definitive version of the classic for that M&S advert.

    3) ‘One Day In Your Life’, at the height of Anastacia’s greatness the ab’d goddess with the huge voice was churning out stompers like nobody’s business. ‘One Day In Your Life’ has such a seriously strong chorus that it has become one of my all-time club classics.

    4) ‘I Am What I Am’, The Dame of Bassey (Shirley Bassey). Ok, this isn’t one that featured much in the clubs – but sexuality affirmed men (and some who are yet to discover their true selves) with feather boas across the nation kick out their legs in unison whenever this track is played. It is against the law not to do some kind of jazz hand whilst this is playing – fact.

    5) ‘Can’t Take That Away’, just before the true madness of Mariah Carey was unleashed upon the world, the stratospheric octaved diva delivered probably her most camp, dramatic and butterfly filled song ever – with a ‘love and respect’ yourself theme, what self-respecting gay can’t listen to this with a tear in his eye and a knowing in his heart?

    6) Britney was on fire (and had a full head of hair) at the beginning of the noughties and ‘Stronger’ was a killer track. Pre ‘Madonna kiss’ post ‘I’m a naughty school girl’ – Brit knew the way forward was her gays.

    7) ‘It’s Raining Men’ is a track, which just needs to feature on this list. It’s a floor filler. Geri’s is okay, but you can’t beat the original Weather Girls’ version, it only counts if you clap in the right place – those who miss the double clap HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME.

    8) Remember Holly Valance, that Neighbours’ star turned pop princess? Vaguely? Well, she burst onto the scene with a seriously sexy number ‘Kiss Kiss’, which I remember making an impact – in my bedroom, but that’s not for here!

    9) ‘Beautiful’, by XTina featured a rather hot gay couple in the video – which gets my vote and the song, has a gooey, lovey vibe, which makes me feel my most beautiful.

    10) ‘I’m Coming Out’, Diana Ross sang this song either with full knowledge of the gay anthem she was about to create or in complete naivety. It features one of the longest introductions in the world, but lyrically this song has to come in at number 1. It says what it does on the tin (if it had a tin).

What are your TOP coming out songs?

  • Oops!… celebrates 20 years

    Oops!… celebrates 20 years

Wanna feel old, particularly if you were bopping along to Brit’s hits back in the noughties, her sophomore album, Oops! I Did I Again celebrates its 20th anniversary today.

The album, which was realised in May 2000, went onto be one of Britney‘s biggest selling albums, going 3x Platinum in the UK and selling over 20,000,000 units across the globe. It is her second-best selling album, the first being her debut, Hit Me Baby One More Time.

The release of Oops!… I Did It Again was staggered as was pretty standard back then, when record labels would release major albums at different times for various countries. Britney’s UK fanbase actually had to wait until November for the album to be released.

The album spawned a number of top 10 hits for Brit, including “Oops!… I did It Again”, “Lucky” and “Stronger” the last single from the album, “Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know” reached number 12 in the UK.

Fans can order the picture vinyl as part of exclusive anniversary merch bundles developed in collaboration with Epic Rights. The merchandise celebrating this milestone will include all new apparel and accessories that pay tribute to the nostalgia of the original album and tour. Pre-order HERE.

Britney gives heartbreaking reason for cancelling her show

“My father was hospitalized and almost died.”

Britney Spears has revealed the reason why she had to cancel her new show Domination in Vegas. Taking to social media the Princess of Pop told fans that her father had been taken ill and that she had to put family first, leaving the future of the show in uncertainty.

Posting an adorable photo of herself as a child with her father and mother the “Piece Of Me” singer said that she was grateful that her father “came out of it alive” but that he still had a “long road ahead of him”.

She said that she had to make the difficult decision to put “full focus and energy” on her family at this time.

She then asked her fans for their understanding.

Read the full message: “I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say. I will not be performing my new show Domination. I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year, so doing this breaks my heart.

“However, it’s important to always put your family first… and that’s the decision I had to make. A couple of months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We’re all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long road ahead of him. I had to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy on my family at this time.

“I hope you all can understand. More information on ticket refunds is available on britneyspears.com. I appreciate your prayers and support for my family during this time. Thank you, and love you all… always”.

  • Britney’s biggest hits ranked

    Britney’s biggest hits ranked

If there’s a top list of Britney tracks to be compiled… leave it to the gays

It came as a shock. Especially for those of us who pretend to still be in our twenties (even if it’s only late twenties) when we were clearly old enough to go clubbing when Britney Spears‘ first hit soared up the charts.

The shock is that song, “Baby One More Time” recently turned 20… that, as Patsy Stone says, make us “how old”?

    via GIPHY

So here are our top 10 Britney hits – to make it on to this list we only used songs that reached at least top three in the UK charts.

    10) Born To Make You Happy 1999 / …Baby One More Time

Weirdly this doesn’t even come close to the strongest ballad on her debut album, but it still made number 1 in the UK charts – this song? Huh? and not “Sometimes” which was arguably the summer song of 99.

“Born to Make You Happy” is a typically 90s produced song with not a real instrument in sight and drum loops galore and a reminder that wah wah guitar doesn’t just belong in the 70s. The accompanying video is a proper piece of 90’s music video nostalgia. No real storyline, but the singer looking pretty is key – in at least three costume changes. They could be scenes from three separate songs really.

    9) Piece Of Me 2007 / Black Out

We love the self-confessional vibe of the lyrics in this song, detailing all the things that had happened to her during her runaway years. Remember the marriages, the hair shaving, the babies, not controlling her own finances? She may seem to have shiz altogether now, but there was a time during the 00s when Brit Brit went Kray Kray. Afterall she was, as she says in the song, “been on the scene since I was 17”.

    8) Opps!… I Did It Again 2000 / Opps!… I Did It Again

More of the same really after her epic hit, “…Baby One More Time”, but we in the UK lapped it up nonetheless, as it became her third number 1. The American’s didn’t like it as much and the song peaked at 9. “Opps!… I Did It Again” was more meaty than”…Baby One More Time” in terms of production but had an epically camp midsection in which she has a conversation with one of the song’s writer Max Martin about a piece of jewellery. The song is so similar to…Baby One More Time you can pretty much sing the lyrics in the chorus of “Opps!… I Did It Again”

    7) Me Against The Music 2004 / In The Zone

Britney’s fourth album In the Zone brought an entirely new sound for Spears. “Me Against The Music” was her call to fans, press and the industry to take her seriously as a pop artist rather than just a bubblegum princess. The song saw her team up with Pop Queen Madonna and had a mad bridge to the chorus with so so many words.

    6) Everytime 2004 / In The Zone

Britney does pop music. She does it very well – not so much the ballads which can come off a bit cheesy – just listen to “Dear Diary” on her first album if you need any proof, but “Everytime” is beautiful. It is also one of the rare songs that Brit herself has written. Apparently, the song is an answer to Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River”. The two had been pop’s biggest power couple, but split in 2002. The breakup was used by their respective labels to push album sales.

    5) Womanizer 2008 / Circus

By 2008 Britney was back on track throwing out albums again after a short break. She released Blackout in 2007, Circus in 2008  and single’s collection in 2009. Womanizer is a catchy girl anthem against cheating womanizing men. The song was deemed by many critics as her definitive comeback single.

    4) Gimme More 2007 / Blackout

When Britney had her meltdown in the middle of the 00s, fans weren’t sure whether she’d actually pull through. Everyday brought more news about her antics and the break down of her mental health. So when it was announced that she was working on new material fans were gifted with “Gimme More” with the now legendary saying “It’s Britney Bitch” cemented into pop consciousness forever. However, her first outting of the song on the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards was panned by critics.

The video looked incredibly cheap, almost as though her label had given up hope on Britney’s staying power at the top, how wrong were they were. The song reached number three in the UK and the US. The album went on to sell over 3,000,000 copies worldwide.

    3) My Prerogative 2004 / Greatest Hits: My Prerogative

It was Britney second single that wasn’t originally hers (the first was “I Love Rock and Roll” in 2002)- it was a Bobby Brown hit before Britney had it. I’m going to say something controversial here. Hers was better. Soz not soz. It reached number 3 in the UK, but failed to chart in the US. The song starts with Britney breathing the lyrics “People can take everything away from you / But they can never take away your truth / But the question is, can you handle mine?” Little did we know that Britney’s truth was going to become tabloid fodder for years after this track.

    2) Toxic 2004 / In The Zone

Did you know this iconic pop song was originally offered to Kylie Minogue? But she rejected it… For Brit it went on to become one her biggest selling singles of all time. It even won her a Grammy, her only Grammy. Accompanying the song was video, which is a calling for every gay boy to pretend to be a flight attendant… okay maybe that’s just me.

    1) …Baby One More Time 1998 / …Baby One More Time

Well, it’s the song that launched her career and there’s no other song in the world that can fill a dance floor in just three notes. The album it came from, released in January 1999 went to sell over 25,000,000 copies worldwide, making Britney a somewhat overnight success.

  • Britney’s first video turns TWENTY YEARS OLD

    Wanna feel old?

There are some of our readers, who are now into adulthood, who weren’t even born when Britney Spears‘ first music video, “…Baby One More Time” was filmed or released, but the video has turned 20-years-old.

The video accompanied the hit single, which went on to launch Britney into a career that would span the late ’90s, ’00s and ’10s – becoming one of the most successful female artists of all time.

Britney took to Instagram herself to write, “Can’t believe the “…Baby One More Time” video has officially turned 20… I still remember filming this like it was yesterday!”

Since releasing “…Baby One More Time” Britney has released 9 studio albums and 42 singles.

  • Britney Spears wants something from out Olympian Gus Kenworthy

And we’re so here for that.

So what does she want? MORE…

Imagine in your wildest dreams, Britney Spears even noticing that you’re alive, let alone Tweeting you lyrics to one of her most iconic songs…

    We die.

Well, this is exactly what happened to out Olympian, Gus Kenworthy.

Taking to Twitter, Britney Spears tweeted the Olympian, “So proud of #TeamUSA!! Hey @guskenworthy, gimme, gimme more on the slopes today!! #ItsGusBitch”

Gus, quite rightly lost his shiz over the Tweet, replying,

“Oh. My. God. Was really not prepared to wake up to this. Not sure how I’m gonna ski today because I’m LITERALLY dead now but I’m gonna go that extra mile for you, Britney! Ilysm!!!”

  • This guy totally nails Britney’s Toxic onboard a real jet

This airline worker has totally nailed Britney’s iconic Toxic routine on board a real life jet.

Assraf Nasir has pulled off the best version of Britney’s “Toxic” we’ve ever seen (although Craig Revel Horwood’s in Lip Sync Battle UK was pretty darn good). Assraf, however, has the extra added bonus of being a real-life worker for an airline.

    https://twitter.com/FarhanRzman/status/842405850673111040

As in Britney’s original chart-topper, 2003’s “Toxic”, Assraf dances down the aisles, sings into the intercom and pushes a food trolley down the Airbus 330’s cabin – all in perfect precision – mimicking Britney’s very own dance moves for the hit.

The 1-minute film starts with the airline worker singing into the aircraft’s intercom system. He perfectly manages to lipsync to the song’s words.

Then he perfectly dances the exact routine to the 2003 Britney hit.

Just as in the original video, a food trolley is used to run through the aeroplane’s main cabin. The video has already been retweeted over 4,000 times as Britney’s fanbase fall in love with the viral video.
