  • The Most Disturbing Use Of An Emoji Yet

This morning something quite brilliant and disturbing turned up in our inboxes…

GMFA the sexual health bods have released their new sexual health awareness campaign called More To Safer Sex which features seven brand new adverts which use stickmen and emojis to teach us all a lesson or two about safer sex.

Well we were down with that until we got to number 3… Which disturbed us a bit – (see above)

    GMFA’s Liam Murphy said,

“We aren’t telling gay men not to use condoms, just that there’s more to consider when preventing HIV. The ‘More To Safer Sex’ webpage will provide education around HIV, help gay men to assess the riskiness of different sex acts, provide information about safer sex practices, PEP, PrEP and the impact of being undetectable on transmission risk, and let gay men know where to go to get tested.”

Anyways see what you think and enjoy…

  • LGBT Helpline Distances Itself From Gossip Journalist Dan Wootton

LGBT Helpline Distances Itself From Gossip Journalist Dan Wootton

The recently re-branded Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline has sought to distance itself from journalist Dan Wootton after “odious” Hollywood HIV article.

The UK’s largest helpline for the LGBT community “mutually” ended Dan Wootton’s patronage of the charity back in June but after an article in which he alleges a Hollywood actor has HIV was heavily criticised for it’s “scaremongering” language and taking reportage of HIV back to the 80s, has sought to distance itself from the controversial writer.

Dan Wootton, 32, who writes for The Sun and is the showbiz reporter for Lorraine on ITV alleges that an unnamed Hollywood actor has HIV and insinuates that he has “a host of high-profile sexual partners”, which includes “an award-winning actress, a religious movie star, a top Hollywood personality with a controversial past, a TV star, a media personality and a glamour model.”
A statement released by the Helpline charity reads,

“Switchboard brought Dan Wootton on as a Patron during our re-brand in June 2015 to provide media support. Following the re-brand we mutually agreed to end our relationship and Dan has had no involvement with Switchboard since that time.”

Daniel Browne, the founder of LGBT charity Push Projects, writing for THEGAYUK, called Wooton’s reportage “odious” and said,

“Let’s begin with the fact that regardless of this person’s fame, everybody has a right to privacy and confidentiality, particularly when it comes to something such as medical records. Running this story is an absolute invasion of privacy.”

  • Naked Rugby Players – What More Do You Need From An Article

    Sometimes we love our job.

As they say a picture says a thousand words and these minxy pictures are painting quite the essay – mainly about how perky rugby players’ bottoms are.

The Ipswich Rugby Club are selling their naked calendar full of tasteful nudes in support of Prostate Cancer UK.

One of the players, Tom Ives, Centre, remarked about getting naked for the calendar in the cold, he said,

“Normally a nude photo shoot, outside, in cold weather wouldn’t be my cup of tea but given the fact that the proceeds are helping to partially fund our tour and sizeable portion is going to a great cause (Prostate Cancer UK), it more than made sense to brave the nippy breeze in order to come up with this beauty of a calendar.

“As to the choice of charity; I spend Monday to Friday working for an NHS end of life team, in which I bear witness to the effects end stage cancer has on people and their loved ones, so I felt the cause was more than just given the pain and upset caused by such a horrific condition”.

  • Stonewall Cancels All Future Awards

Britain’s biggest LGBT charity Stonewall has said that it will no longer be holding its annual awards.

Stonewall, Britain’s biggest LGBT charity has said that it plans to cancel its annual awards after 10 years of the ceremony. The £240 per ticket awards which have courted controversy over the decade, most notably with its bigot of the year award, are bowing out with Sir Ian McKellen hosting the final ceremony.

Ruth Hunt, Stonewall’s Chief Exec spoke about the decision to step back saying,

“Ten years ago, a peck on the lips between two men on TV would have caused uproar, and books featuring lesbian characters rarely made the best-seller list. And this was one of the only award ceremonies to celebrate the achievements of the lesbian, gay and bi community. That simply isn’t the case today, and ceremonies and awards that recognise the success and diversity of our wonderful community have blossomed.

“We have therefore decided that now is the time for us to step back, making this year’s awards the final Stonewall Awards.”

Tickets for the event have increased from £155 + VAT in 2012 to £198 + VAT in 2015. Guests will be treated to a champagne and canapé reception on the 5th November in the magnificent Raphael Gallery of the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Judging this year’s competition are past presenter of the awards, Gok Wan, Bethany Black, Lord Browne, Sandi Toksvig, who is due to take over from Stephen Fry on QI, Russell T Davies and Kevin Jenkins.

  • Andrew Hayden Smith To Get Soaked For Hot Fellas

Banana and Cucumber star Andrew Hayden Smith is playing a DJ set tonight at Ku bar to celebrate the launch of a calendar of gay men getting soaked in aid of charity, Prostate Cancer UK.

    Speaking to TheGayUK, Andrew said,

“It’s for a great cause. I was happy to lend my support and go down and spin some tunes for them and there’s going to be some hot fellas as well – so that’s always good!”

Clonezone and Soho based KU Bar have joined forces for a charity evening of surprises, cocktails and guest DJ’s to present the launch of Project SOAKED, brain child of photographer Mark Lister.

Project SOAKED is a visual venture from the award-winning photographer showcasing striking portraits within a calendar and hard back photo book of men amidst a downpour of water. Lister launched the project to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer with proceeds going to Prostate Cancer UK.

“It’s important to us to support Project Soaked and assist Mark in his efforts to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK” said Clonezone’s Marketing Manager Topher Taylor. “We’ve found as a company that a surprisingly low-number of men know the basic facts of Prostate Cancer, including not knowing how to examine themselves for symptoms. We are excited to build a long-term relationship with Project Soaked, with 100% of proceeds from the calendar going directly to the cause”.

The event will take place at KU Bar’s award winning gay bar on 30 Lisle Street, WC2H 7BA in the centre of vibrant London’s Soho tonight from 8PM.

  • Naked Streaking For Tigers Makes A Comeback

Naked streaking across London Zoo is back… and it’s for Tigers…

This is the kind of story we love. People getting naked for a cause. Hurrah.

The Zoological Society of London an international conservation charity, is looking for men and women to get naked and streak through the heart of London Zoo to bring awareness and raise money for the endangered tiger. Over the last two years, the streak has raised a whopping £115K. The funds go towards helping ZSL’s work for wildlife and conservation projects.

Ali Corbett, Challenge Events Manager, at ZSL, said: “We can’t wait to welcome racy runners to ZSL London Zoo for the only official streak in London!

“Over the past two years the risqué run has raised more than £115k for tiger conservation, and we’re hoping this year we can inspire courageous cat-lovers to bare all and help us raise even more funds to continue our work for wildlife.”

The 300 places available are being pounced on fast, sign up at www.zsl.org/streak

  • Fundraising Evening Raises Emergency Funding For HIV Patients

Over £1,000 has been raised to provide emergency nonclinical support for members of the Bloomsbury Patient Network at a Robert Grace Trust fundraising evening.

For the last five years donations from the charity have provided support for patients of the Bloomsbury Clinic – one of the largest HIV clinics in Europe.

The £1,100 raised will support patients in need at times of crisis and to help them engage in their care. Some items that have been purchased in the past include groceries, powdered milk for babies, school uniforms, beds, mattresses, fridges, cookers and hostel accommodation. The fund also subsidises travel and child care so that patients can attend the Bloomsbury Network’s events.

Christopher Sandford, Patient Representative at the Bloomsbury Clinic, said,

“The emergency fund is designed to help people when they have no-one else to turn to in times of crisis. If someone cannot afford to eat, or has nowhere to live, or can’t send their children to school, can’t afford the fares to attend the clinic, then you can’t expect people to take their medication effectively and stay healthy.

“We are grateful to the Robert Grace Trust for their continued support of our work. So many people’s lives have been filled with hope thanks to the fund.”

Attendees enjoyed wine and nibbles as the speakers – Patricia Pearson, Chair of the Robert Grace Trust; Dr Laura Waters, Consultant Physician at the Bloomsbury Clinic; and Christopher Sandford – discussed recent developments in HIV treatment and the difference the emergency fund has made.

Sean, a patient who volunteered at the fundraiser, said:

“I just wanted to say how moved and proud I was listening to the presentations. When I think back to that first year of diagnosis there was so much to adjust to and joining the Bloomsbury Network has meant everything to me in terms of keeping me healthy, stable and supported. That is thanks to the incredible work that the Patient Representative Team does, building a supportive welcoming community. It is truly one of my favourite places to be. I was so moved listening to the stories from the emergency fund and so inspired by the idea of how the patient representatives are empowering so many people and transforming lives, including mine.”

The Bloomsbury Patient Network, run by three patient representatives, offers peer support for people to live positively with their HIV diagnosis. They offer a range of social, educational and motivational events thought the year.

Robert Grace was a South-African architect and a patient of the Bloomsbury Clinic. The Trust was founded in his memory after he passed away in 1987 to provide emergency support for patients and carers.
