  • OPINION | Banning homophobes from stadiums is not the answer

Apparently, there’s a school of thought that if you hide something under a rock or you stick a head in the sand, the problem goes away.

Banning homophobes from stadiums isn't going to help

    Except it doesn’t.

So this week there’s been a lot of talk about banning homophobes from sports’ arenas and stadiums if they shout anti-gay, homophobic, biphobic or transphobic abuse and I’m flabbergasted. Since when did banning anything actually solve any problem?

And who exactly is the banishment going to help?

Whilst I agree that something must be done to solve the anti-gay culture that you’ll find on many of the UK’s sports’ grounds. This toxic environment means that gay or bisexual sports stars and athletes find it impossible to come out – why are there so few openly gay or bisexual sportsmen and women?

But isn’t this part of the problem? There’s a complete dearth of out and proud athletes in sport, particularly men. There’s a handful of noteworthy sports professionals in diving, a sprinkle in rugby and absolutely none in football. Perhaps if we had more out and proud players homophobic fans would be exposed to other types of gay or bisexual men – not just the overtly camp fodder that entertainment formats on TV rely on to provide entertainment. Some could argue that stereotyping feeds into a homophobic mind frame. Gay and bisexual men, still in 2017 aren’t seen by some as “real men” but campy, effeminate and weak and these people need education. We are all types, shapes, sizes, colours and creeds – and all of us are worth protecting.

Organisations that own the grounds have a responsibility to keep its patrons safe but it does not, I believe, hold the remit to educate or punish people with bigotted opinions. That responsibility lies with the police and society. Homophobes need education. Not the naughty step and time out.

That’s why I would advocate an anti-discrimination workshop for those who are found guilty of hate speech – whether it’s gay, religious, race or other hate speech. These classes could run just like the speed awareness classes – when you’re caught speeding.

You’d pay £100 for the class, money which could be ploughed into running the courses. On that course, you’d be given the opportunity to learn about discrimination and it’s damaging effects. You’d learn about equality and other lifestyles. Once you’ve completed the course you’d be allowed back.

Surely this would be a better option than banning a homophobe indefinitely and letting him fester in his own hatred, as he watches the match in front of his TV. How does this help the LGBT+ community?

It doesn’t. Instead, he’ll continue to live in his own echo chamber, feeding his own negativity.

I agree with MP Damian Collins, who chaired the Culture, Media and Sport Committee who found that there should be “a zero-tolerance approach to the use of all homophobic language and behaviours”, but the sanctions that are implemented against those who are homophobic must be thought out as to not exacerbate the problem.

  • People are being triggered by Rainbow Laces which are trying to eradicate homophobia in sports

People are being triggered by Rainbow Laces which are trying to eradicate homophobia in sports

Highlighting the problems of homophobia in sport has never been so clear, as today the Premier League used Rainbow Laces to show solidarity with the LGBT+ community – making some people very very very angry.

A number of football clubs have decided to use rainbow laces to shed light on homophobia in sports. It is a Stonewall and Premier League collaboration and it’s seemingly triggered some fans spectacularly. Homophobic fans have been showing off their inability to be accepting left, right and centre.

One of the worst threads on social media was from Manchester United’s Twitter and Facebook feeds. The club, which is supporting the campaign, tweeted that they were proud to show their support of the rainbow laces campaign and said that sport was for everyone.

They also changed their Facebook profile picture to include the rainbow laces and it made over 8,600 people use the angry emoji. Thankfully 177,000 people managed to find their “like” button.

Some fans on Twitter and Facebook were having none of it with at least one suggesting that all gay should be killed.

However he now says he’s a “completely different” person.

In the tweet appeared to condone the burning and killing of gay people saying,

“Is it me or are there gays everywhere? #Burn #Die #MakesMeSick.”

    Andre Gray’s apology in full

“I would like to respond to media reports with regards to previous tweets posted from my Twitter account.

“Firstly, I want to offer a sincere and unreserved apology to anybody I may have offended in relation to these tweets. The tweets were posted four years ago when I was a completely different person to the man I am now. I was at a very different point in my life back then – one that I’ve worked hard to move on from.

“Thankfully a lot has changed in my life since then. I have experienced a lot over the past four years and have had to take responsibility for a number of things in my life which has enabled me to mature and grow as a person since that time.

“I have a lot of regrets regarding a number of things I’ve done in the past and realise I have made some big mistakes, none more so than these tweets, but I would like to stress that I’ve worked incredibly hard to completely transform my life since that time.

“To clarify, I do not hold the beliefs written in those tweets whatsoever. I can assure everybody that I am absolutely not homophobic and as said previously I can only apologise and ask for forgiveness to anyone I offended.

“Thankfully I am not the guy I was back then and will continue to work hard both on and off the pitch to become a better person.”

  • How Many Balls In A Gay Football Team?

Just one… you dirty minded minx. Jokes aside the London Titans FC are celebrating their 10th anniversary this weekend.

One of London’s most popular LGBT football teams, London Titans FC, will be celebrating their 10th birthday this weekend by hosting a tournament on Wandsworth Common from 10AM.The club which is now 50 players strong started life after the first kick off on Sunday the 16th October 2005 and has enjoyed steady growth as has the interest in football in the LGBT community and gay players in professional footballers.

Much attention has been focused on gay footballers in recent months with 3 high profile players coming out as gay in just a few years – and two more Premier League players, it has been reported, are ready to come out of the closet.

We’re excited for the Birthday Tournament as it’s a way to celebrate this journey, and we hope that the community will come out and support the players this Saturday.”

  • Bookmaker Is Taking Bets On Which Premier Footballers Will Come Out As Gay

An online bookmaker is now taking bets on which footballers are set to come out as gay.

After last week’s revelations that two high profile footballers are set to come out as gay, a bookie, Wincashlive.com, has started a rather tasteless game, on which customers can bet on which footballers they think will come out as gay before September 2016.

Last week it was announced that two high profile Premier League footballers may be ready to come out as gay before the start of the new season. Any Premier League footballer to come out would be the first to do so, whilst still playing in the game.

Stonewall, Britain’s leading LGBT charity called the game a “boring PR stunt”, but Jake Hook, Editor of TheGayUK branded the game “trivialising” and “bordering on offensive.”

    He said,

“In this day and age taking bets and making money out of someone’s difficult decision to come out as gay, especially in the sporting world is bordering on offensive. It trivialises the struggle that many people, especially those men and women in sport face when decided to come out.”

The game, which is set to finish by September 2016, allows punters to choose a name and click on a slider by their name to set the amount they want to play with.

There are 45 footballers listing and include Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw – who has already responded and denied rumours that he is gay, He took to Twitter to say,
“it’s not me so everyone can shut up now”

Any footballer who comes out as gay will join other high-profile out sportsmen including, the US’s Robbie Rogers, Sweden’s Anton Hysén and Germany’s Thomas Hitzlsperger.
  • Gay Football Team Makes A Bid For Joey Barton

Oh those cheeky chappies at East End Phoenix Football Club have asked Premiership footballer Joey Barton if he wants to transfer to their team.

Tweeting the star footballer, lads from the East End Phoenix Football Club said that as part of the transfer package, Joey Barton, 32, could enjoy free pints at the Old Ship each Sunday and that he wouldn’t need to wash out his gym bag.

Club Chairman, and stand-in goalkeeper Niall Dumigan, said he was “cautiously optimistic” of a quick response from Barton’s representatives

    Dumigan added:

“I think we have tabled a very fair offer under the circumstances. The lads hate having to wash the kit every week, and there’s always a fight over who will end up with it.

“Joey has a lot of fans at East End Phoenix ever since he bravely stood up against homophobia in football three years ago. He’s probably the most high-profile straight ally we have in the sport, so I think he’d fit in well with the squad.”

Joey Barton is well known for his stance on equality and his fight to give homophobia in football the boot. He won Ally Of The Year in 2014.The East End Phoenix football club, a Sunday league, was set up in 2008 and has an open door policy, but probably not the depth of wallet needed have Barton play for them.

  • Robbie Rogers Urges FIFA To Consider Gay Fans Safety For World Cup

Openly gay footballer Robbie Rogers has reminded FIFA to include basic human rights in its guidelines when choosing a host country for the World Cup.

FIFA came under fire in December 2010 when it was announced that Qatar, infamous for its abuses on the rights of gay people and women, won the hosting obligations for the World Cup 2022. Qatar will be the first Arab nation to host the World Cup.

Many human rights campaigners were concerned that gay football fans and players could be subject to humiliating tests, which could include anal probing, to ascertain whether they were gay or not. Currently, gay men and women face between one and three years in prison if caught.

Robbie Rogers who came out in 2013 reminded FIFA about gay and women’s rights and urged the organisation to make those considerations part of the guidelines for future hosting countries. In an interview with GQ he said,

“I would hope that FIFA would be sensitive not only to gay rights but also women’s rights and basic human rights, and they should pick host countries for the World Cup based on what’s best for the competition—that’s what the athletes and fans want.”

“So my goal is to create a dialogue with FIFA and convince them to create guidelines for how they choose countries to host the World Cup going forward, so that they only pick countries that ensure the safety of all the athletes and all the fans.”

In Qatar it has been reported that a small advertising campaign has been started to educate tourists and expatriates about appropriate clothing for men and women to wear in public, suggesting that when in Qatar “you are one of us”.

  • Former Aston Villa Football Player Comes Out As Gay

Thomas Hitzlsperger, German-born former Aston Villa and West Ham player, has announced that he is gay.

The 31 year old, who retired from professional football four months ago, made the announcement in the German newspaper, Die Zeit.

Speaking to Die Zeit, Hitzlsperger, who has played for Germany 52 times, said that he had come out because he wanted to “further the debate about homosexuality among sports professionals.”

He justified his silence on the matter until after his retirement from the sport, saying that homosexuality would “simply be ignored” in football. Nonetheless, he stated that he had “never been ashamed” of his sexuality, although he admitted that it had been “a long and difficult process” coming to terms with his sexuality.

Although Hitzlsperger is the highest profile footballer to come out as gay, to date, he is only the fourth footballer to do so.

Hitzlsperger’s coming out coincides with an upsurge in movements aimed at wiping out homophobia in football. Kick It Out, which was initially founded in 1993 to tackle racism in the sport, now encompasses all types of bigotry in football. And in 2008, the Justin Campaign was created in memory of Justin Fashanu, the first openly gay football player, who committed suicide in 1998.

However, campaigns to stamp out homophobia in the sport have met with debatable success. The most recent example in the UK is Stonewall’s ‘Right Behind Gay Footballers’ campaign, which was slammed for its links with betting company Paddy Power and for relying on gay stereotypes.

  • Gay footballer Robbie Rogers, Other gay footballers “scared” to come out

Robbie Rogers one of the world’s most famous openly gay footballers has said no other players have contacted him about the issue since he came out in February 2013.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, openly gay footballer Rogers hasn’t received any contact from any other players since he made news about his sexuality back in February. He was the first professional player to play for an English team, to do so since Justin Fashanu in 1990.

‘I haven’t received a letter or text or anything from one footballer that wants to talk about these issues,” he said.

‘I’ve received phone calls and I’ve spoken with all my friends here in the UK and around the world that have supported me, but I haven’t had one message from a [gay] footballer,” he told BBC Newsnight.

‘It reminds me of the fear that I had – you remember that atmosphere and how it made you feel. It just shows there’s a huge problem.

‘What do you do to change that, do you try to support them to create an environment that would support them to come out and they would feel comfortable in? It’s really tough.’

Robbie Rogers now plays for LA Galaxy.
