Just 21 percent of the top podcasts are female presented and 1 percent is LGBT+ content

A shocking review of the top 100 programmes on Apple’s iTunes podcast chart reveals that just 21 per cent of podcasts are female-led and just one per cent is content for, or about, the LGBT+ community.

The iTunes chart is male dominated with the majority of programmes featured in the top 100 podcasts being presented by men or featuring male-dominated panels, when checked on the 24th November 2018.

Women-only shows accounted for 16 per cent of the shows in iTunes’ podcast chart, while female-dominated, that is shows that also featured a man in the presenting role, accounted for just 5 per cent.

There was just one LGBT+ podcast, which was a show focussing on the experiences of people who had been subjected to “gay-cure” therapy. Two other podcasts were presented by out members of the LGBT+ community including Stephen Fry and Anna Richardson.

Around 18 per cent of podcasts were equally presented, meaning that there was a 50/50 or near equal split of male/female presenters on the shows.

    Comedy and Sports Male-Dominated

Practically all comedy shows were presented or featured men only.

The top 10 podcasts were, with just two exceptions, the Guardian‘s Today In Focus and the BBC‘s Desert Island Discs, all presented by cis-gender men or featured male-dominated panels.

The top female presented show was the Guardian‘s daily Today In Focus, presented by Anushka Asthana, which is a show to “bring you closer to Guardian journalism”.

The second female-fronted show was Lauren Lavern’s Desert Island Discs produced by the BBC.

Here’s how the top 100 podcasts were presented.

When it comes to finding out new shows, Apple’s “New and Noteworthy” section offered potential listeners a 50/50 spread between men and women presented podcasts.

  • This is the new gay podcast you need to subscribe to

This is the new gay podcast you need to subscribe to

Strong language, time travel and gay men – what more could you possibly want from a podcast?

Jack and Jacob are two gay men, and met through working together as writers and comedians in London. Their mission statement was to create a podcast that was funny and entertaining with top quality comedy content, but also one that was unapologetically and joyfully gay.

The Hole Seekers is a podcast by and for the gay community, and a small contribution to the canon of LGBT+ entertainment. Jack and Jacob’s weekly adventures as time travellers are all narrated through a lens of their own perspectives and experiences as gay men, and each week sees them navigating their way through the world of love, sex and dating as gay men and proud members of the LGBT+ community.

Through frank conversation and comedy, Jack and Jacob hope to provide an affectionate, inclusive and humorous exploration at what being gay means to them, using the podcast to open that conversation up to the wider community and hopefully making people chuckle along the way.

Sliding in and out of holes is – as Jack and Jacob quickly discovered – a messy business that’s far better digested aurally. The podcast is, first and foremost, a comedy show and the focal point of each 30 minute episode is a long-form, on-the-spot improvised conversation between Jack and Jacob and their guest. Each guest takes the form of a character met by the boys after they’ve travelled through a hole in time, and is played by a different comedian every week. Before recording, Jack and Jacob do not know when or where in time each week’s hole will take them or who they’ll meet when they arrive at their destination.

  • Who is John B. McLemore?

John B. McLemore was the subject of the hit S-Town podcast. Here’s what we know about him.

Warning, this article contains spoilers if you have not yet heard the podcast.

It took Brian Reed, the podcast’s creator, three years to collate all of the content he would require for the S-Town podcast. The show recently celebrated its 40 millionth download. The show’s subject was a man called John B. McLemore.

The show’s subject was a man called John B. McLemore.

John B. McLemore was a chatty closeted gay man from Woodstock, Alabama, USA. A town he called Sh*t Town Alabama. He reached out to Brian to investigate an alleged murder in his home town. The story of John would turn out to be the subject of the podcast, rather than the alleged murder.

McLemore studied chemistry at Birmingham-Southern College, but he was most famous as a horologist; horology is the scientific study of time, the making of clocks and the measurement of time.

As the podcast progresses through its seven episodes John’s life and its mysteries are revealed. The story includes how the man who gated tattoos and piercings was to become one of the world’s most tattooed men.

The show also features the shocking moment when Brian finds out that John commits suicide.

How did John B. McLemore die?

It is revealed that it is likely that John had mercury poisoning which causes anxiety, depression and mood swings. John’s autopsy failed to look for the signs of mercury poisoning but it has been suggested that it may have contributed to his eventual suicide. John killed himself after drinking cyanide.

  • Explicit gay podcast nominated for British Podcast Award

The Probably True Podcast has been shortlisted for Best Entertainment at this year’s British Podcast Awards.

A podcast that celebrates sexuality has been shortlisted for Best Entertainment award at this year’s British Podcast Awards. The podcast features NSFW stories told in a fun and tongue-in-cheek way.

The award’s ceremony is being hosted on April 28th, in Kings Cross.

Other shortlisted podcasts include those by Edith Bowman, Scroobius Pip and Romesh Raganathan.

Probably True is a slightly naughty, sex-positive weekly storytelling project tackling LGBT issues in a fun and engaging way. Adhering to the mantra “Hopefully interesting, occasionally funny, Probably True”, each episode is a smutty-but-charming collection of personal adventures; much like its author.

The host, Scott Flashheart, explained the premise of the Probably True podcast series,

“The whole idea for this series was to talk openly and honestly about things that we might not normally, for fear of being judged. I use these podcasts to talk about these things openly, non-judgementally, and (hopefully) entertainingly, to foster larger conversations within the community.

“I don’t have all the answers, but the point is more to start a conversation. And if I can do it in a way that makes you laugh, then even better.

“So far, the series has covered issues such as promiscuity, coming out, cruising, masculinity and masturbation in engaging and funny 5-10 minute episodes, that all tell funny, touching and occasionally gross stories.”

On hearing of the nomination, Scott exclaimed,

“I’m actually amazed – this project is essentially just me sitting in a cupboard and talking to myself about jizz and sex and silly stories from my youth. To think it would be considered up against work by actual professional broadcasters whose work I know and respect is very bizarre and incredibly humbling.”
