  • Gawker Editors Condemn Removal Of “Gay Shaming” Outing Of Exec

The editorial team at Gawker.com have condemned of the removal of an article which many readers have derided as “gay shaming” of a Conde Nast exec.

The removal of an article which outs the married father of three and Chief Financial Officer of Condé Nast, David Geithener, who allegedly tried to pay for 2 to 3 hours with a gay porn star, has been criticised by the site’s editorial team who say that the take down was an “unprecedented breach of the firewall.

They are up in arms that ‘business executives deleted an editorial post over the objections of the entire executive editorial staff”.

Huffington Post’s national editor, Katie Nelson took a swing at Gawker, stating that what they had published was “gay shaming” and not journalism.

The owner of Gawker, Nick Denton, who is openly gay, took down the post yesterday after revealing that publishing it was decision he regretted. The removal of the story is the first time that the gossip and news site has formally taken down a story, despite Denton acknowledging that the article was “true and well reported.”

Gawker Media, which is incorporated in the Cayman Islands owns Gawker.com. Deadspin and Jezebel.

David Geithener denies knowing the gay porn star.

  • Wal-Mart Sued After Failing To Insure Gay Employees After DOMA Ruling

The US’s biggest grocery retailer is being sued for discriminating against a same-sex couple.

A woman is suing Wal-Mart, a company, which owns the UK Asda brand, after failing to offer health insurance to her wife after DOMA was struck down.

Jacqueline Cote, 52, is suing her employer, Wal-Mart after failing to extend its insurance benefits to its gay employees after the Defence of Marriage Act, DOMA, was struck down in June 2013. Wal-Mart only started including same-sex couples in January 2014.

Cotes is alleging that her wife, Diana “Dee” Smithson had spent, according to a complaint filed on Tuesday in Boston federal court, in excess of $150,000 (£95,913) on medical treatments fighting ovarian cancer, which were uninsured. She claims it is in violation of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Wal-Mart did extend insurance benefits to gay couples in January 2014.

In an email to Bloomberg who originally reported the story, Brian Nick, a spokesman for Wal-Mart said, “[Walmart’s] benefits coverage previous to the 2014 update was consistent with the law.”

Ms. Cote’s class action suit will be the first of its kind since the United States Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal across all of the USA.

  • US Bakery Which Was Fined $135000 For Discrimination Makes 3 Times In Donations

The Sweet Cakes bakery, at the centre of a legal battle which saw it fined $135,000 has raised over $348,000 in donations.

A gay couple were awarded $135,000 in damages after the Sweet Cakes bakery refused to bake a wedding cake for them in 2013 on the grounds that it was against their religious beliefs.

The owners of Sweet Cakes, Aaron and Melissa Klein, started a GoFundMe page asking supporters to help them with their legal costs.

GoFundMe closed the campaign saying that it violated the site’s terms and conditions, but not before the fundraiser had racked up $109,000 in donations. The decision to pull the crowdfunder from GoFundMe came down to the fact that laws had been violated. GoFundMe allowed Sweet Cakes to take the funds already collected minus its fees and taxes.

Another site, Continue To Give has allowed the campaign to go on and the Kleins have received over 232% of the $150,000 they’re asking for. The page encourages users to “help the Kleins through this hard time as they fight for religous [sic] freedom”.

The page’s mission statement reads: “Every American should be free to live and work according to their faith without the government punishing them for doing so.”

Continuetogive.com take 3.9% + $0.60 per donation. According to the site, the Sweet Cakes fundraiser has had 7611 donations. Meaning that it will have grossed around $25540.60

In April owners of a Pizza parlour in Indiana said that they would refuse to serve a gay wedding, saying it would never deliver pizza to a gay wedding. A crowd funded was started and raised over $800,000.

  • Non Observant Bigot Accuses NBC Of Turning Its Logo Gay

NBC… You know the logo right? The brightly coloured peacock with its feathers, well one irate social media user blasted the corporation for changing its logo for pride.

A Mr. Stair wrongly slammed NBC owned KARK 4, for changing its logo and argued that NBC’s integrity was in shatters after he assumed that they had changed their logo to the “colors of the gays”.

    He blasted the station saying,

“Your changing your station logo with the colors of gays is a disgrace,”

“Just stay out of it… Your integrity is ruined… ABC KATV is my choice in the future for all Little Rock station viewing… Shame on you!”

Of course, Stair was neatly put back in his place after failing to notice that the NBC peacock logo and its brightly coloured feathers has been part of the network’s identity since 1957.

Kark 4 News, a network owned by NBC wrote him back saying,

“We didn’t change our logo Don. Same logo as always.”

Of course many corporations change their logos and products to include the iconic rainbow flag for pride season. Some do it better than others…

  • All Male version of Hooters opens in Dallas

In parts of the US scantily clad buxom women waitress have made restaurant chains with names like Hooters and Twin Peaks (sic) very popular with men who just like to ogle and dribble when they are eating their burgers, but now one brand new eatery has turned the tables.

The women (and obviously gay men) are getting a chance to to dine and drool over muscular waiters in tank tops and skin-tight short shorts/underwear in a place that has the tasteful name of Tallywackers!

It is too early to see whether the fine upstanding citizens (and others not quite so upstanding) of Dallas will take to getting an eyeful of beef when ordering their juicy steaks, but we are shallow enough to welcome this new incentive to making dining that much hotter.

  • President Obama’s Proclamation for Gay Pride Month

President Obama has released a Presidential Proclamation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, which starts on June 1st. It reads as follows:

From the moment our Nation first came together to declare the fundamental truth that all men are created equal, courageous and dedicated patriots have fought to refine our founding promise and broaden democracy’s reach. Over the course of more than two centuries of striving and sacrifice, our country has expanded civil rights and enshrined equal protections into our Constitution. Through struggle and setback, we see a common trajectory toward a more free and just society. But we are also reminded that we are not truly equal until every person is afforded the same rights and opportunities — that when one of us experiences discrimination, it affects all of us — and that our journey is not complete until our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.

Across our Nation, tremendous progress has been won by determined individuals who stood up, spoke out, and shared their stories. Earlier this year, because of my landmark Executive Order on LGBT workplace discrimination, protections for Federal contractors went into effect, guarding against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Federal Government is now leading by example, ensuring that our employees and contractors are judged by the quality of their work, not by who they love. And I will keep calling on the Congress to pass legislation so that all Americans are covered by these protections, no matter where they work.

In communities throughout the country, barriers that limit the potential of LGBT Americans have been torn down, but too many individuals continue to encounter discrimination and unfair treatment. My Administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors because the overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that it can cause substantial harm. We understand the unique challenges faced by sexual and gender minorities — especially transgender and gender non-conforming individuals — and are taking steps to address them. And we recognize that families come in many shapes and sizes. Whether biological, foster, or adoptive, family acceptance is an important protective factor against suicide and harm for LGBTQ youth, and mental health experts have created resources to support family communication and involvement.

For countless young people, it is not enough to simply say it gets better; we must take action too. We continue to address bullying and harassment in our classrooms, ensuring every student has a nurturing environment in which to learn and grow. Across the Federal Government, we are working every day to unlock the opportunities all LGBT individuals deserve and the resources and care they need. Too many LGBTQ youth face homelessness and too many older individuals struggle to find welcoming and affordable housing; that is why my Administration is striving to ensure they have equal access to safe and supportive housing throughout life. We are updating our National HIV/AIDS Strategy to better address the disproportionate burden HIV has on communities of gay and bisexual men and transgender women. We continue to extend family and spousal benefits to legally married same-sex couples. And because we know LGBT rights are human rights, we are championing protections and support for LGBT persons around the world.

All people deserve to live with dignity and respect, free from fear and violence, and protected against discrimination, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, we celebrate the proud legacy LGBT individuals have woven into the fabric of our Nation, we honor those who have fought to perfect our Union, and we continue our work to build a society where every child grows up knowing that their country supports them, is proud of them, and has a place for them exactly as they are.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-ninth.

  • Want To Give Up Blood In The US? Give Up Gay Sex

If you are gay, then the US’s powerful Food & Drug Administration still does not want your blood.

That is unless you can prove you have been celibate for a whole year. After years of pressure to reform the ban, the FDA announced plans in December 2014 to ease the rules slightly and officials issued a formal recommendation on Tuesday which effectively still stops gay men from donating blood.

The FDA has banned blood donations from men who have had sex with another man anytime since 1977, a rule approved more than three decades ago during the AIDS epidemic. However, as blood screening and HIV testing have made advances, the policy has been criticised as unscientific and discriminatory by some medical organisations, Congressional Democrats, and advocacy groups.

“The FDA may have had good intentions behind this policy, but asking gay and bisexual men to be celibate for a year before donating blood is in practice still a lifetime ban,” said a statement issued by Kelsey Louie, the CEO of LGBT health advocacy group Gay Men’s Health Crisis. “By contrast, the new policy does not require heterosexuals to be celibate for one year in order to donate blood, even if their sexual behaviour places them at high risk for HIV.”

However the out gay US ambassador to Spain may be banned from donating blood at home in the United States but he appeared eager to post a photo of himself donating blood in Spain, where the rules are different. Smiling and giving a thumbs up, James Costos appears in a photo on his Instagram account wearing a tourniquet and giving blood along with a glowing message to his followers. “I joined Team U.S. Embassy Madrid donating blood. Please join us, it feels good to give, trust me!” he wrote. The Instagram account belongs to Costos and his partner, Michael S. Smith, an interior designer who have been together for 15 years.

In Spain, however, being gay does not disqualify potential blood donors. The donors are screened based on the individual’s risk factors, such as how recently they became intimate with a new partner and other behaviors that could raise chances of exposure to HIV.
