  • Obama warns Uganda against anti-gay law

The US President, Barack Obama has warned Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni that an anti-gay law could complicate relationships that tie the two nations together.

The new law proposes that anyone engaging in homosexual acts could face life imprisonment and that anyone who does not report the crime would also fall foul of the law. Even talking about homosexuality without condemning would be a crime under the new bill.

For the first time the new bill also covers lesbian relationships.

Obama, who previously called the law ‘odious’ has once again hit out, saying that if the new law was approved that the relationships between the two countries would be ‘complicated’. The US is of Uganda’s biggest aid donors.

His criticism of the anti-gay move was not limited to Uganda; he also noted the increase of harassment and violence against gay people in Russia and Nigeria.

President Yoweri Museveni refused to approve the law initially, however the bill can still be passed with a two-thirds vote. However Yahoo is reporting that a spokesperson for the President said that the bill would be signed after local ‘scientific’ analysis. The team was asked to “study homosexuality and genetics in human beings.”

    The scientists found that;

‘There is no definitive gene responsible for homosexuality,

‘Homosexuality is not a disease but merely an abnormal behaviour which may be learned through experiences in life.’

Last year a controversial law that was named ‘Kill the gays’ was halted, the law was amended and the death penalty was removed.

  • X Men star Ellen Page comes out

X-Men Actor Ellen Page comes out at a Human Rights Campaign conference.

    • Ellen Page, an Oscar nominee came to fame in the Juno movie
    • Spoke about wanting to live an ‘open and authentic live’
    • Celebrities react with positivity over her coming out

26-year-old actress Ellen Page has come out as gay at a ‘Time To Thrive’ Human Rights Campaign conference in Las Vegas saying:

‘I’m here today because I am gay

‘And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.’

    TIRED OF LYING BY OMISSION
Page also said she was coming out because she was: ‘tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain. I am young, yes, but what I have learned is that love, the beauty of it, the joy of it and yes, even the pain of it, is the most incredible gift to give and to receive as a human being. And we deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise.’

‘If we took just 5 minutes to recognize each other’s beauty, instead of attacking each other for our differences. That’s not hard. It’s really an easier and better way to live. And ultimately, it saves lives. Then again, it’s not easy at all. It can be the hardest thing, because loving other people starts with loving ourselves and accepting ourselves. I know many of you have struggled with this. I draw upon your strength and your support, and have, in ways you will never know.’

Ellen Page made her fame in the film Juno, however she has also starred in X-Men The Last Stand and Inception.

Her new film X-Men Days Of Future Past is due out in May 2014.

    STAR REACTION
Former Boybander Lance Bass took to twitter to congratulate the star saying:

‘I just watched Ellen Page come out! Wow! What a speech! Congrats!!’ the gay N’Sync singer captioned the picture. ‘We love you @ellenpage!!’

  • Grindr use triples in Sochi

Grindr Use In Sochi Triples During Olympics.

    • The popular hook up app has had its users triple in the first week of the Olympic games
    • One week ago there was 185 active users, now there are 541 users
    • Grindr rival in Russia Hunters was recently hacked and shut down.

Vocativ is reporting that numbers of users on the popular hook up app Grindr have tripled during the Winter Olympic games. The total number of users in Russia is around 55,000 – small compared to countries such as the UK or USA, but there is much potential for growth as long as anti-gay groups don’t use the service to lure gay men to attack and entrap them.

One such group was filmed for Channel 4’s Dispatches programme called Hunted. The programme caused outcry in the UK, when a group of men and one woman, Katya (Ekaterina) Zigunova, were filmed savagely beating and interrogating a gay man they found using an Internet site. Last year a man was reportedly killed after he was lured, sanred and then tortured by a group, who posed as an individual on a social network site, who wanted to meet.

Russia does have its own hook up app, called Hunters. It was, however, recently hacked and shut down.

The app had around 72,000 active users, of which the tech team were only able to retrieve 24% after the hack. The company is now moving its servers to prevent further attacks.

Last year the Russian government passed a bill making it illegal to talk about ‘non-traditional’ relationships to anyone under the age of 18. A 100-year ban was also put in place on holding a gay pride in Moscow.

THEGAYUK approached Grindr to ask if they had in place any safeguards for users in Russia to protect them from abuse from anti-gay abusers. We are waiting for their response.

  • Violent Ex Lover Faces Jail After Battering Three Men

A Glaswegian man faces jail after the court hears how he battered three lovers in an abuse case that spans 10 years.

Kevin Conway, 29, a bank manager from Glasgow has appeared in court after three men accused him of battery and abuse, which spanned a decade.

Paul Scrase, Mark MacDonald and Andrew Fleming all accused Conway of beating them whilst in a relationship with Conway.

During one savage beating Conway hit Scrase over the head with a candle stick which left Scarse needing stitches and he head butted MacDonald breaking his nose. Fleming also told of how Conway had threatened to pour boiling water from a kettle on him.

    The abuse left Fleming ‘terrified’.

The Daily Record reports that in other attacks Conway had threatened to have someone rape Fleming.

Conway accused the men of lying and claimed that he had suffered domestic abuse, however, the sheriff rejected these claims.

The Glasgow Sheriff court is a local court service in Scotland, based in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The court deals with an assortment of cases including: Solemn and summary criminal cases, fine payments, and civil actions.

Conway was convicted of 10 charges of assault.

    Paul Scrase said:

‘When the domestic abuse task force approached me I was shocked.’

Conway will be sentenced later in February.

  • Valentine’s Day Carnival Outside Russian Embassy

A carnival is due to take place outside the Russian Embassy tomorrow to celebrate Valentine’s Day, called For Russia With Love.

The event that is being sponsored by Lush, All Out, London Roller Girls and the Peter Tatchell Foundation, is aiming to show opposition to the human rights abuses in Russia.

The rally’s start time is 12PM until 2:00PM
Address: Russian Embassy, Assemble corner Bayswater Road & Ossington Street, London W8 4QP
Nearest tube station: Notting Hill Gate

‘We are rallying near the Russian Embassy in London to show our opposition to the continued human rights abuses sanctioned by the Putin regime, including the new anti-gay law banning “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors”, which has coincided with an upsurge in homophobic and transphobic violence in the country,’ said co-organiser Juliet Chard of Lush.

    Fellow co-organiser Peter Tatchell added:
‘The Sochi Olympics are in full swing. This carnival is our fun way to keep up the pressure on the Russian government and show our support for LGBT Russians and all Russian victims of human rights abuses. We don’t want Putin to think that now the Olympics have started the protests are over. Let’s keep highlighting the terrible things happening in Russia and support the heroic Russian activists – gay and straight – who are defending human rights. Freedom of expression for all.’

  • A1 in the Big Reunion Tonight

One of our all time favourite boybands – mainly because we’ve got a naked pic of them – are to appear in The Big Reunion Tonight.

In Episode 2, which airs tonight, two major bands of pop history feature – Eternal and A1. Spats and arguments are put aside as these pop stars get their groups back together.

A1 Are Ben Adams, Christian Ingebrigtsen and Mark Read.

Some of the band began to compete for their fans’ attention as an intense battle of egos began. Ben explains: “Me and Christian always had a… it wasn’t rocky, it was competitive.”

Christian recalls: “Ben always loved being in the centre and the centre of attention. And sometimes I wanted to be there too.”
Ben remembers one particular confrontation: “He (Christian) turned around and he went to punch me, but instead opened his hand and slapped me.”

Although Ben admits: “Thinking back now, I would have hated myself. But at the time, I thought I was brilliant.”
The bands popularity reached new heights with their number one cover of Take On Me. Mark says: “Everything was going our way, to top it off we won a BRIT award for best new band. That year was the year Craig David was nominated, Coldplay was nominated – we were in good company there.”

A1’s success came at an unexpected cost when tragedy struck on the band’s tour of Asia. Ben recalls what happened when an extreme case of overcrowding at a shopping mall signing ended in four fatalities: “We could see girls at the front actually being squashed against the glass. I remember looking up and going to everybody ‘can you see this?’. I just think the sheer enormity of people that were there was just uncontrollable. Unfortunately, four young girls got squashed to death at the signing.”

Christian says: “We know we didn’t cause it. But we also know if we hadn’t been there, those people would still be alive maybe. I guess it’s something we can never fully come to terms with and accept”

Following the tragedy, A1 withdrew from the public eye. Ben says: “It was a time for us to re-evaluate what we were doing and why we were doing it.”

The band returned to the spotlight with a new look and feel, writing their own hit number one single Caught in the Middle.
As their music changed, so did their bond. Mark says: “There was a weird dynamic now in the band, because you had two musicians and two vocalists in the middle, but one (Paul) not really doing much.”

Christian says: “Looking back now, I think Paul stopped caring as much and withdrew a little bit more.” Ben recalls: “I think for an entire month on tour he refused to speak to me.”

Ben says: “Everything is going great and here’s this, whatever you want to call him, ruining it for everybody. Paul leaving was definitely the catalyst in the split up of the group.”
The band received a text from Paul asking them to read his letter of resignation. Shortly after, A1 were ditched from their record label with debts of £2m.
