  • FOOD | Food Focus

There is so much emphasis on the requirement of “superfoods” in your diet that brag extensive & amazing health benefits that sometimes it’s easy to forget how important some of the simple, humble, inexpensive and readily available foods are.

I’ve chosen to touch on just some of the benefits of the following 3 foods due to their simplicity, 2015 food trends, and a smidge of personal preference!

    Beetroot

An ingredient and flavour I’ve only recently come to love. I adore the vibrancy and earthiness of this versatile vegetable. If you’ve never had beetroot warm, then check out my Beet-Swede-Bake this edition.

Beetroot is Boron bountiful. Boron is great for sexual stamina (also said to have aphrodisiac qualities), and energy levels in general. A useful ingredient if you suffer from fatigue. Betaine and tryptophans can help promote sense of well-being which could also be useful for people that suffer with depression.

Bold and bright beetroot has also been linked to lowering blood pressure, detox support (via purification of the blood and liver), and anti-inflammatory / anti-cancer properties.

Recent studies and TV exposure suggest that beetroot juice can help us exercise more efficiently if consumed before a workout.

We may well see more of beetroot over 2015 with all kinds of root vegetables set to be a food trend this year, and I’m all for it!

    Cabbage

My most favourite food in the world, EVER. An odd choice some may think, but I literally cannot get enough of cabbage. Too many have fallen victim to over cooked mush that can put one off for life. Much like how a lot of people feel about Malibu. My favourite cabbage is the sweetheart- obvi. (flash fried with garlic and soy).

Cabbage is great for your digestive tract, and long established as treatment for stomach ulcers. Also, a good source of dietary fibre and includes anti-oxidant vitamins A & C.

The rich purple colour of a red cabbage screams anti-oxidant qualities. Powered along with anti-inflammatory & glucosinolates, has also linked this vegetable to prevention and even treatment of certain cancers.

With the red cabbage being more than 90% water, it could be useful in weight management for those counting calories.

Most of the cabbage family are a useful ingredient for promoting healthy bones due to it’s high content in vitamin K and manganese.

    Chilli

I remember a time when chillies were simply red or green in the supermarkets. Now, we are crazy for the hot stuff, and the range of chillis’ now is extensive (over 200 varieties of chilli in the world!). I do have a trashy tendency at home to use Sriracha in EVERYTHING.

Chipotle has appeared to take centre stage more recently, favoured for it’s fiery, smoky rich kick. Great in mayo! The Ancho chilli and home-made Harissa have also been hits of late. The chilli plans on hanging around being another 2015 food trend, set for sweet & spicy marinades and sauces being everywhere!

Chillis have been found to contain anti-inflammatory properties and are great to incorporate in your diet if you suffer from migraines / headaches as they can help to prevent such occurrences whilst clearing congestion and supporting sinuses.

Interestingly, chilli has had great research results in the effects of controlling insulin levels, which could be utilised by people living with diabetes.

Chilli has also had interesting results in cancer studies, showing that the hot stuff can help prevent the spreading of prostate cancer and lower the risk of stomach cancer.

  • Why Do I Get Erections Every Morning? Five things guys should know about their junk

Have you any idea why you always wake up with a woody each morning even when you are alone?

Or do you know if it’s really OK for your penis to curve to the side? If you have answered ‘no’ to both of these then you need to check out this video from Buzzfeed who consulted a doctor to ask the questions that every gay man wants to know the answers too.

As gay men, we usually pride ourselves on having a deep intimate knowledge about the male body. Being men logically holds that we’d know a thing or two about the ins and outs of our own physiology, right? The thing is, though, men are notoriously bad about dealing with basic health needs and a lot of what we assume to be true about our bodies is based on false assumptions.

  • ADVICE | Can We Use Fruit And Veg In Bed?

ADVICE | Can We Use Fruit And Veg In Bed?

My boyfriend and I are quite adventurous when it comes to the bedroom and we’re wondering whether we could use fruit and veg and other foods as part of our activities? Is it dangerous to insert things like cucumbers and carrots?

Using fruit and veg could be a great way to excite and reignite your sex life. Using soft fleshy, non-acidic fruit such as honeydew melons or watermelons can be an exciting way to get new sensations. Simply put a hole in it and thrusting in and out will provide interesting brand new feelings.

Alternatively you can always use other foodstuffs such as chocolate spreads or even Marmite, who recently brought out body paint. To answer your question about carrots and cucumbers, extreme caution must be used when inserting anything into your butt that doesn’t have a handle or give good grip.

Many people have ended up in A&E after failing to retrieve a cucumber, banana or carrot lodged in their rectums. A painful experience that can actually lead to death if left untreated. We would urge anyone who has gotten anything stuck up there to seek medical advice immediately, no matter how embarrassed you feel.

Oh did I say use lots of lube…

If you’re looking to insert a food, why not try a lollipop or ice cubes, which will melt.

It’s best to use implements that are actually designed for insertion, such as dildos and vibrators. Don’t forget if you’re using toys together and share them, to use a fresh condom before using it on your partner, and wash them properly after use.

If you are going to insert a carrot, gherkin, cucumber or banana, make sure you’re relaxed. Some of these veg can be much larger than a penis, so using lots of lube and taking your time is a must. Oh did I say use lots of lube…

  • Treadmill Tuesday The Day When Brits Flock To The Gym, Only To Waste Money

The second Tuesday in January, which this year falls on the 13th, has been identified as Treadmill Tuesday – the day when most people decide to hit the gym after Christmas.

    * Treadmill Tuesday comes a week before Blue Monday, thought to be the most depressed day of the year.

    * Outdoor bootcamps set to be fitness tread in 2015

    * Treadmill Tuesday – the day when most people look to join the gym after the excesses of Christmas.

*88% of us likely to fail at keeping our resolutions

This Tuesday is when Brits will take action when it comes to shedding those holiday pounds or making a start on New Year resolutions to get in shape, new analysis from AA Hotel Group of the Year 2014-2015 QHotels suggests.

Last year, Tuesday January 14th – the second Tuesday in January – saw the highest volume of traffic to the health club section on QHotels.co.uk. Treadmill Tuesday falls almost a week ahead of Blue Monday (January 26th), thought to be the most depressing day of the year.

Dave Heap, Group Leisure and Spa Manager at QHotels, said: “We’ve identified the second Tuesday in January as Treadmill Tuesday – the day when most people look to join the gym after the excesses of Christmas.

“Exercise has proven mood-boosting benefits so is perfect for banishing those January Blues as the most depressing day of the year approaches.

“Joining one of our award-winning health clubs is a great way to kickstart a fitness regime for the New Year and our dedicated staff will be on hand to help every step of the way.”

Health Club fitness professionals and members also shared their predictions for the top fitness trends of 2015, with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and outdoor bootcamps topping the list. HIIT involves alternating short bursts of intense cardiovascular exercise with recovery periods of less intense activity.

Top motivational tips from QHotels health club community:

Remember there’s no time like the present – join a gym and start on your fitness journey

Go to classes to try new things and stop your fitness routine going stale

Find a friend to keep you motivated and help you achieve your fitness goals

Make a plan and stick to it

Get fit at your own pace to build lasting healthy habits and avoid injury

Celebrity Life Coach Sloan Sheridan Williams said, “With a suggested 88% of resolutions failing which translates to approximately 150 million resolutions every year, it is clear that your brain is not automatically wired to succeed at keeping resolutions any more than your muscles are automatically wired to succeed at running a marathon yet every year people ask their brain to perform the mental equivalent. So when you want to clear the cobwebs and start the New Year as the New You, how can you stop giving up on giving in?”

  • UK HIV Prevention Funding Saved For Another Year

The National AIDS Trust (NAT) has today welcomed commitment from the Minister for Public Health, Jane Ellison MP, to maintain current levels of funding for national HIV prevention for a further year.

In a letter to fellow Conservative MPs, which was reported in Pink News on Friday, the Minister said: “I want to take this opportunity to make absolutely clear that this Government will protect funding for HIV prevention.”

This will come as a huge relief to supporters of the investment – over 1400 of whom wrote to the Minister to voice their concerns in a campaign to stop the proposed cut to the fund. NAT initiated the campaign following Earl Howe’s answer to a parliamentary question on World AIDS Day, where he stated that the funding would likely be ‘pared back’, and a public comment from THT CEO, Rosemary Gillespie, confirming that the proposed cut was in the region of 50%.

Deborah Gold, CEO of NAT, said: “It is great news that the funding will be maintained for next year despite earlier plans for a substantial cut. We now need to use the next year for a proper discussion with all stakeholders and communities about the scope, shape and funding of a new multi-year programme from 2016/17.

“The Government has heard loud and clear from the public that standing back and doing less on HIV prevention is simply not an option. I want to thank MPs, peers and activists who expressed their concern at any possible cut to the Government. You have made a real difference.”

  • “At Risk” Encouraged To Get Flu Jab As The Dreaded Virus Spreads

Latest figures from Public Health England (PHE) indicate that flu is now circulating in the community. Increases have been seen in both children and adults across a range of indicators, including GP consultations.

Following PHE advice, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) has this week issued guidance to all GPs on the use of antiviral drugs for the management of people presenting with flu-like illness in England, who are at higher risk of developing complications. Although flu is starting to circulate, flu levels currently remain relatively low.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “The NHS is well prepared for the flu season, and although flu levels remain relatively low, we are starting to see increases.

“Prevention is better than cure, and the increase in flu activity means it is even more important to get your flu jab if you are in an at-risk group. If you have not already had it, call your GP as soon as possible. I am very grateful to GPs for the work they are already doing to vaccinate people, and I know they will continue to strive for higher uptake.”

Dr Richard Pebody, head of seasonal flu surveillance at PHE, said: “We are starting to see increases in flu activity in both children and adults, indicating the start of this year’s flu season.

“People in ‘at risk’ groups can get the vaccine for free as they are at much greater risk of becoming seriously unwell if they catch flu, and sadly many end up in hospital. This includes people with health conditions, even those that are well managed, such as asthma, diabetes, heart, lung, liver or renal diseases, those with weakened immune systems, as well as older people and pregnant women.”

The latest vaccine uptake figures show some positive signs with 70.6% of people aged 65 and over vaccinated. However, only 47.1% in those aged under 65 with a health condition have been vaccinated and 41.6% of pregnant women. In addition, 34.8% of all 2-year-olds, 37.3% of all 3-year-olds and 29.3 % of all 4-year-olds have been vaccinated with the nasal spray vaccine as part of the childhood flu immunisation programme. PHE also encourages healthcare workers and carers who could pass the infection to vulnerable people to also get vaccinated.

Dr Pebody, added: “Although unpleasant, for most healthy people, flu is a self-limiting illness. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, cough as well as sore throat, aching muscles and joints. The best advice for treating flu in healthy people is to stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and take pain relievers such as paracetamol. Children under 16 should not take any medicines containing aspirin. People in at-risk groups who develop symptoms consistent with flu, or if anyone’s symptoms persist or become more severe, they should seek medical advice.

“Maintaining good cough and hand hygiene, such as covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, disposing of the tissue as soon as possible and cleaning your hands as soon you can are important actions that can help prevent the spread of germs and reduce the risk of transmission.

“Every season we remain vigilant and assess the flu situation as more information becomes available from our various surveillance systems, and from the different virus samples we receive from across the UK.”

  • As Temperatures Are Set To Plummet, Think About Your Health

As temperatures start to fall PHE is urging people to think now how the onset of cooler weather could impact their health.

Every year more than 25,000 extra people die in England over the winter period and many of these deaths are, experts say, preventable.

Today (1 December 2014) the Met Office has said that by later this week we will get our first taste of cooler weather and temperatures are expected to fall to about what we’d expect for this time of year.

The winter planning period started on November 1 2014 when PHE and the Met Office began its cold weather alert system, a programme which enables the agencies to make public warnings when particularly chilly weather is forecast. The Met Office’s winter season begins today.

Mark Wilson, a meteorologist Met Office, said, ‘With today being the start of winter, this week looks likely to see temperatures falling closer to the early December average. This means that by day, temperatures will be around 7 to 10 Celsius, with some nights seeing temperatures fall close to freezing, particularly in more rural areas. As we look ahead to the rest of December, a return to the unseasonably mild conditions of recent times is not currently expected.’

Dr Angie Bone, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at Public Health England, said, ‘Cold weather can lead to serious health problems, such as heart attacks and strokes, and can make chest diseases worse.

So before the really cold weather arrives this winter think now how the cold may have an effect on your friends and family. The impact of cold weather is felt most by older people, the very young and those who have pre-existing health conditions, if you know someone in one of these groups, and most of us do, have a look at the cold weather plan or the Keep Warm Keep Well leaflet for practical guidance on what to do to.

Much of our advice on protecting health indoors is common sense. People should eat warm food and drink hot drinks, heat homes to at least 18C and move about to keep warm. But it’s worth repeating this as some people find these things difficult to do without help. We’re also urging everyone to think of someone they know who may be affected by the cold, an elderly relative, friend or neighbour, someone not in the best of health or with very young children, to take the time to think about what you can do to help protect their health this winter.’

Professor Keith Willett, NHS England’s clinical director for acute care, said, ‘As a doctor who has spent some 30 years working in A&E, every winter, doctors and nurses see a big increase in the number of people, particularly older and frail people, who are admitted to hospital because of respiratory or other chronic conditions usually worsened by immobility, the cold and viral illnesses.’

People often don’t seek advice for wheezes, coughs and sneezes because they don’t think it’s serious enough. Our advice is visit your pharmacist if you’re feeling under the weather, no problem is too small and they are a highly trained and trusted source of health advice.

  • How to make your 2015 New Year Resolutions stick

As it’s the New Year, now is the time for people to consider what they want to get out of 2015 and start thinking about fresh starts, new beginnings and of course New Year’s Resolutions.

With a suggested 88% of resolutions failing which translates to approximately 150 million resolutions every year, it is clear that your brain is not automatically wired to succeed at keeping resolutions any more than your muscles are automatically wired to succeed at running a marathon yet every year people ask their brain to perform the mental equivalent. So when you want to clear the cobwebs and start the New Year as the New You, how can you stop giving up on giving in?

The key to success is to think of your brain like a muscle that needs fuel and rest, remind it regularly of its obligations and give it the right conditions to function at optimum. Research has shown the prefrontal cortex is responsible for willpower and like a muscle it needs feeding, exercise, repetition and rest. Here are my top tips on how to stick to your New Year’s resolutions and ensure your willpower supports your desire to make long lasting changes for the better.

    1. Make A Commitment

The point I stress to my clients around resolution time is that to keep motivated and achieve their goals they need to make a powerful commitment and hold themselves accountable to that commitment. I compound the fact that without the right focus their good intentions will just fall down leading to unhelpful consequences. Thankfully help is at hand in the form of commitment websites which enable us to make a tangible promise to reach our goals through helpful encouragement and accountability using a Commitment Contract. One of my favourites that I recommend to clients is stickK that literally puts your money on the line if you don’t achieve your goal.

    2. Realign Your Beliefs

If you do what you’ve always done then you will get what you’ve always got. I work with my clients to identify the limiting beliefs which hold them back from being the best version of themselves. When it comes to making a fresh start, it’s vital not to take your past into your future. Learn to let go of unhelpful thoughts and behaviours which have not served you well thus far. You may find it helpful to look at the rules or “shoulds” that have governed your personal and professional life before working on changes to your perception or approach so that you focus on helpful thoughts and positive self talk. Consider working with a life coach or mentor who can help you achieve your dreams in the fastest possible time.

    3. Money Matters

Don’t forget to take some time out for financial planning as 8 out of 10 people last year did not plan their finances but still stated that financial stability was important to them. So whether you’re setting a savings or spending budget, creating an emergency fund, finding a way to increase clients, productivity or income, focus on the steps you need to take to make your life more financially favourable. Remember just like extreme dieting results in an inevitable binge, setting a tough budget will result in an unplanned shopping spree. Set reasonable goals and become more mindful of your spending whilst still enjoying that which life has to offer such as connection to loved ones or contribution to your community.

    4. Constant Reminders

One of the best ways to stay focused on your resolutions is to remind yourself on a regular basis why it is important to achieve your goal and what you need to do to get there. This can be in the form of Post-It notes with motivational messages stuck strategically around the house, using an app like HassleMe to set daily or even hourly reminders, or even using a motivational photo of you looking awesome as the screensaver on your smartphone or computer. Write postcards to yourself congratulating you on how well you are doing and get your friends to send them periodically when they see your resolve might be weakening. A vision board covered in aspirational images that represent your dreams and ambitions also works very well at getting you in the right mindset to move towards that which you desire.

    5. Vocalise Your Promises

Don’t just make promises to yourself that you can easily break behind closed doors. Share your resolutions with friends and family and promise them that you will do your best to achieve your goal. Then practise being your word so that the people in your life see you as honourable and someone whose integrity they can count on. This will not only make you look good but also bring you closer to the people you care about. Write postcards to yourself congratulating you on how well you are doing and how committed you are to your resolution and why it is so important to you. Ask your friends to send them periodically when they see your resolve might be weakening.

    Take Action

Whichever tips and techniques you decide work best for you to stick to your resolutions, it is crucial that you take action and keep moving forward as this is exactly the advice I give clients who have struggled with change in the past. If life is a game then you need to stop being a spectator and get out on the pitch to play to win. This involves things like avoiding procrastination, putting up a year planner, setting budgets, writing lists, prioritising tasks and getting organised. It helps to set yourself realistic targets based on what can be achieved in the time you have available so break jobs down into constituent parts. Be specific so you have a clear idea of what you are working towards and track your progress rewarding yourself as you meet each target. This will keep you motivated to continue your journey towards a New You in the New Year.

  • Brazilian Butt Lift Enquires Up 200% – Leading Cosmetic Surgery Expert Mike Saul Exposes Its Dangers

Leading Cosmetic Surgery Negligence Solicitor Mike Saul exposes the potential dangers of the newly popular procedure.

    Brought to you by:

    TJL Solicitors

Today we’re talking with Mike Saul, head of Cosmetic Surgery Negligence at Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors and one of the UK’s leading experts in cosmetic surgery negligence.

He will be discussing what can happen when cosmetic surgery goes wrong – in particular, looking at the buttock augmentation procedure that has grown to be so popular in recent times.

We are exposed to hundreds of celebrity body shapes deemed ‘perfect’ by the media each day. Currently, the curves are in, meaning the likes of Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez are being praised for their curvaceous behinds.

‘A high number of our clients come to us having been strongly influenced directly by the media’s promotion of beauty,’ comments Mike.

With this in mind, it’s not surprising to learn that there has been a 200% increase in the number of UK enquiries for the buttock augmentation procedure (or ‘Brazilian Butt Lifts’). Kim Kardashian is cited as the inspiration for nearly half of all buttock augmentations in the UK, in the past year alone.

However, the media often changes perceptions of beauty (remember the days when Nicole Richie was adored for her lean physique?), meaning the strive for this ‘perfection’ is unhealthy and unobtainable for the public to aspire to.

‘It’s so important that an individual is completely sure that the surgery will benefit their health and well-being, and isn’t an attempt to emulate celebrities who are currently being marketed as “beautiful”,’ says Mike.

Cosmetic surgery is not a quick-fix option; there are numerous risks associated with such invasive surgery, including falling victim to cosmetic surgery negligence.

So what is Cosmetic Surgery Negligence?

‘Cosmetic surgery negligence can be defined as any damage to the body that is not within reason expected or acceptable, following a cosmetic procedure.’

Mike Saul’s must-ask FAQs to discuss with your surgeon:

    Chat extensively with your surgeon until you are sure the decision to have a buttock augmentation is best for you. Topics to discuss include;

    Desired outcome

Many patients have unrealistic expectations about how the surgery will alter their physique. You may have an image of an outcome that isn’t physically possible to achieve, due to your skin or body shape. Chat honestly with your surgeon about your desired look so you can both reach a realistic compromise.

How long will the effects last?

It’s crucial to learn how long the effects of the surgery will last. Buttock augmentation surgery is typically long-lasting, and the fat will grow and age as you do. However, no cosmetic procedure has life-long effects, so follow-up surgery may be needed.

    Financial responsibilities

If you are going to need follow-up surgery, consider the costs. Talk to your surgeon – how often will you require further surgery? How will this be financed?

    Recovery time

Your surgeon should tell you how long you need to wait until normal activity levels can be resumed. Your surgeon should also detail everything from common symptoms experienced, to how to sit and lie down, and give you a comprehensive recovery time frame. Gain as much information as you can.

    Surgeon experience

    Always choose a surgeon based on;

    • Certification, education and training
    • Their experience with performing buttock augmentations
    • The comfort level you feel with him or her.

    Post-surgery contact

If you decide to proceed, be sure to maintain the relationship with your surgeon afterwards. Please ensure you keep to all follow-up appointments. Safeguard yourself by monitoring your buttocks regularly and contact your surgeon if you notice any changes, or have any concerns.

‘For more guidance about how to prepare for making a decision about cosmetic surgery, you can read our S.A.F.E Choice Surgery Guide here,’ says Mike

Mike Saul’s Advice: What to do if your surgery goes wrong:

It’s essential that you know how to identify the basic signs that something might not be quite right with your surgery, Mike says.

    With buttock augmentation, potential complications include;
    • Loss of sensation in the buttock area
    • Asymmetry in the buttock caused by the fat being reabsorbed. Fat absorption, in some cases up to 40%, can alter how one buttock looks from another. You may require further fat grafting to rebalance the aesthetics of your buttock.
    • Excessive scarring
    • Hematoma or seroma (a buildup of blood or fluid under the skin, that may need to be removed).
    • Damage to underlying structures
    • Untreated infection
    • Disfigurement
    • An adverse reaction to general anaesthetic including;
    • Death (approximately 1 death for every 100,000 general anaesthetics given)
    • Anaphylaxis

Poor surgical technique and neglect during and post-surgery are also factors to be aware of, as you may have a case for a claim.
When should you consider making a claim for cosmetic surgery negligence?
When should you consider making a claim for cosmetic surgery negligence?

With buttock augmentations, post-operative swelling can last between 3 – 6 months before the full effect of this surgery is apparent. However, if you notice any of the complications listed above, it may be in your best interest to explore the claims process.

It is, of course, natural to feel some pain once the anaesthesia wears off, however, if the pain is extreme contact your surgeon. Similarly, swelling can last for weeks or months. It’s important that you contact your surgeon to assess if this is normal.

Be sure to follow exact instructions that your surgeon may give you to help aid recovery – such as lying only on your front, wearing a body garment for 6-8 weeks, no exercise for at least eight weeks and so on.

What advice would you give to someone who thinks they have suffered at the hands of a negligent surgeon?

‘Many victims suffer in silence following negligent surgery. This can be down to low-self esteem and confidence as well as a lack of knowledge.

‘People may not know they have a case for a claim.

‘We would urge anyone who thinks they have received negligent cosmetic surgery to call us in confidence,” says Mike. “Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed. We are here to help you, and we’re on your side.’

Mike Saul is the head of Cosmetic Negligence at Cosmetic Surgery Solicitors, the first specialist legal department in England and Wales committed to helping those who have suffered from Cosmetic Surgery Negligence.

Mike is widely recognised across the media having been featured in the BBC, Daily Mail and The Observer, as well as television programmes such as ITV’s ‘The Real Cost of Beauty” and BBC1’s ‘Inside Out’, to name but a few.
