  • The Scottish Are Getting Real About LGBT+ Teacher Training

The Scottish are taking matters into their own hands. The TIE (Time for Inclusive Education) campaign has launched a crowd-funding appeal today, to raise money to send Scottish schools teachers on training courses that will allow them to tackle homophobia within their schools.

Since the campaign’s launch last June, TIE campaigners have continually called for inclusive LGBT+ education to be commonplace across all schools in Scotland, and have highlighted teacher training as a key method in achieving this.

Last month the Scottish Parliament rejected a call to include LGBTI+ education in Scottish schools.

Figures show that 1 in 4 LGBT+ youth in Scotland’s schools have attempted suicide and over half are deliberately and regularly self harming as a result of bullying. Despite this, a cross party parliamentary committee recently closed a petition for LGBT+ education in schools that had been submitted by TIE.

    Co-founder Jordan Daly said:

“As a result of budget cuts, most schools do not have the funding available to send their teachers on the LGBT+ inclusive training programmes that are on offer. The government’s current strategy to tackle LGBT-phobia within schools does not go far enough, and that is why we are now directly stepping in to raise as much money as we can to ensure that teachers are being properly trained. We are appealing to anyone who believes in equality to back this important initiative.”

Campaigners have set a minimum target of £5000, which will allow them to train a considerable number of school teachers from across the country by sending them to Stonewall Scotland’s Train the Trainer course.

The cost of training one teacher is £120, with attendees being trained to return to their establishments as trainers for other staff.

Secondary school teacher and TIE campaigner, John Naples-Campbell (34), stated: “Some staff lack training and awareness of the resources available in order to support their pupils. Funding this training will ensure that more staff delivering the curriculum will have access to these resources, in order to provide a secure, nurturing and engaging learning environment fit for the twenty first century.”

TIE has continued to attract support, with notable backers including rugby referee Nigel Owens and MSPs Patrick Harvie and Jean Urquhart.

Most recently, public sector trade union UNISON voted unanimously to back the campaign at it’s Scottish council conference on the 6th February. Delegates pledged their continued support, and the council gave a £1000 donation – which is already being used to pay for some teachers to attend upcoming training courses.

    Co-founder Liam Stevenson (37) commented:

“We quickly identified that teacher training was going to be a key part of any strategy to tackle issues of LGBT-phobia within our schools and, already, with a small amount of funding and in less than a week – we have three teachers attending the Train the Trainer programme in March. We are currently in talks with more schools, and with the support of the public via our crowd funder, we can do much more.”

  • All Set For The Inaugural Icon Awards In Scotland As Conchita Flies In

The Scottish LGBTI community is set for the inaugural Icon Awards, set to hit Glasgow this October 9th. The awards aim to reward and celebrate the LGBTI community of Scotland with what’s being penned as the night of the year in the Scottish LGBTI calendar.

Scotland is leading the way in the race for equality and inclusion, with the passing of the gay marriage bill, and the recent accolade of being the most progressive country in Europe, but there is still a “long way to go” says event manager and organiser Michael Macfarlane.
    He added,

“The Icon Awards will be an inclusive event, inviting people from all over Scotland to come together and celebrate diversity. The awards will go to individuals, businesses and organisations that are going the extra mile, and are working towards equality for all.”

Eighteen categories span the full spectrum of the LGBTI community and their achievements.

Music legend Horse MacDonald also commented saying; “It is so important for the LGBTI community to identify with and have role models, when I was growing up there were so few people to look up to and aspire to. It’s the role models of today’s society who are challenged with helping people accept who they are, and in turn help the endless battle towards full equality for the LGBTI community across Scotland and the world” Horse added,

“A ceremony like this is long overdue in Scotland, and will help create new role models, and highlight areas that still have a long way to go like sport, as well as creating an inclusive event for all to come and enjoy”.

One Scottish sporting star who believes in the cause is former Glasgow 2014 team Scotland swimmer, and British LGBT sporting personality of the year finalist Martin Cremin.

Born in Dunblane, Martin was at the forefront of Scottish sport, now living in London he is still a firm supporter of the LGBTI sporting scene.

Conchita Wurst and Michelle Visage will be in attendance for the very first awards.

  • Free Pride U-Turn On Drag Ban

The organisers of Free Pride have made a U-turn on its policy to ban non-trans drag queens at its pride event in Glasgow

A controversial pride event which made international headlines when it banned non-trans Drag Queens from performing at its pride event has u-turned after being slammed by social media users, celebrities, drag queens and other pride organisers.

In a statement released the unnamed organisers said:

“Sadly, this attracted not just fair criticism, but also an immense amount of harassing, abusive behaviour. This harassment took the form of rather nasty insults and threats which were aimed at free pride organisers.

“The original decision was made because many trans members of Free Pride have had negative experiences with drag acts veering towards racism, misogyny and transphobia; the lack of contact with the drag community contributed.

“We made a mistake, and we apologise.”

The organisers, which haven’t yet made public whether the organisation is a charity, a CIC (community interest company) or how it is managed added:

“We hope to learn from this in order to foster the kind of community we want to see. We believe there is a greater need for dialogue within, and indeed between the trans and drag communities. We look forward to creating spaces where these dialogues take place with mutual compassion and respect.”

  • Anti-Drag Pride To Fund Event With Drag Film Fundraiser

A pride event which has come under immense criticism for banning drag performers at its event is planning a fundraising film night by showing a film about a drag queen.

UPDATE: Free Pride has now announced it has overturned their ban on drag performers.

Glasgow based Free Pride, is hoping to run a fundraiser for it’s “anti-capitalist” pride by showing a film called Pay It No Mind: The Life And Times Of Marsha P Johnson, a drag queen who was instrumental in the Stonewall riots in 1969.

However, the pride event has been condemned after announcing a policy banning “cis” drag performers at its event, in favour of allowing trans or non-binary drag acts to perform, a move which has commenters questioning the legality of the policy as it could breach the Equality Act 2010.

The pride event has been scheduled on 22nd August in direct competition with Glasgow Pride. Writing in THEGAYUK, Warwickshire Pride founder Daniel Browne called the move “confrontational”.

Gay right advocate Michelle Visage called the move to ban drag queen performers as “Bullsh*t”

The fundraiser event, which is being advertised on Facebook is due to take part this Saturday.

TheGayUK has reached out to Free Pride for comment.
