    At least seven prides are happening this weekend. Find out where your closest one is and how you can attend.

    According to The Pride Shop, seven prides are happening this weekend and span the UK and Ireland. According to the list, prides is happening in Doncaster, Margate, Swindon & Wiltshire, Wigan and Wakefield. There are even two in Ireland, Sligo and Galway.

    Is pride free to attend?

    Most prides in the UK are free events to attend and if the pride has a parade or a march is free to watch and take part from the sidelines, however, if you’re looking to take part in a parade some prides require you to register to march within the parade.

    Why is the Pride in the UK?

    Pride and Pride month stemmed from the US, and has been adopted more widely across the world, but in reality, there are many Pride months across the globe. For instance, Sydney Mardi Gras, Australia’s biggest pride takes place in February (although they do have a Pride festival in June) and here in the UK, there isn’t such thing as one month for Pride. No, the UK is quite unusual in that Pride events are spread out across most of the year.

    In the US most prides happen in the month of June to coincide with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, in the UK however things are a little more spread out with more and more county, city and town prides becoming available.

    There are over 180 pride events in the UK alone and they start in Feb with the last (outside Winter Pride) in September. So Pride month in the UK is better described as Pride Half Year!

    Homophobic Beating Leads To Theatrical Celebration

    Nando Messias was beaten up on a street in an act of homophobic hatred. Years later he’s ready to give his response to that incident, a spectacle of provocation, celebration and hyper flamboyancy in The Sissy’s Progress.

    Part dance-theatre, part walking performance, The Sissy’s Progress leads its audience out onto the streets with a live marching band playing original music composed by Jordan Hunt. The Sissy’s Progress confronts the harsh contradictions of gender and violence of city life, standing up for sissies everywhere.

    Nando says, “It’s genuinely frightening. I almost always get abuse from passers-by when we’re doing the performance. The audience gets to experience that and that makes it feel uniquely relevant. I’m particularly proud that we take this performance precisely to places where such

    work wouldn’t normally be seen. It’s a universal theme.”     

    The Sissy’s Progress has been performed at Homotopia, Liverpool and OUTBURST, Belfast. with further performances on:

  • Anti-Gay Leaflets Distributed To Households In Margate Before Kent Pride

    Leaflets which urge householders not to support gay pride in Margate have been distributed through the letterboxes of Kent homes just days before the annual pride.

    The homophobic leaflet, which was delivered through the letterboxes of hundreds of homes in Margate urges residents to stay away from the pride parade and that Margate will never be MarGAYte.

    Margate’s pride parade returns this year on the 29th August. The parade will start at 11am from the Lido car park.

    The leaflet also seemingly links homosexuality with paedophilia as it calls for residents to “save yourself and your children”

     

    The highly offensive note has been derided by the local community with volunteer pride co-ordinator Tony Butcher telling the KentOnline.co.uk,

    “This is a horrendous act and these people are inciting a riot.

    “The comments are absurd, we are people who like other people of the same sex and to suggest we are paedophiles is absolutely ridiculous.”

     

    This is not the first time a pride event has been targeted by a malicious maildrop in 2014 households in Brighton received an anti-gay flyer and in November 2014 residents in Ely, Cambridgeshire also received a homophobic note through the door.
