  • MP Sarah Champion Tweets Her Support For Blood Donations From Gay Men

Labour MP for Rotherham, Sarah Champion, has tweeted her support for the end of banning gay and bisexual from giving blood.

Labour MP Sarah Champion has tweeted her support for bringing an end to a discriminatory ruling that forbids men who have sex with men from donating blood, unless they have been celibate for 12 months. According to TheyWorkForYou.com Ms. Champion has “consistently” voted in favour of legislations that affect the rights of LGBTs in the UK.

The petition calls for the Government to end the 12-month deferral ban on gay men donating blood. It calls for a replacement “equal and individual risk assessment based process for all blood donors.”Ms. Champion tweeted a link to an official petition site, which is delivered direct to the Government. When the petition, started by Robbie Beveridge, reaches 10,000 signatures the government officially responds to the petitioner, at 100,000 signatures the petition is considered for debate in Parliament.

The debate about gay, bisexual and MSM’s ability to donate blood has become a hot topic in recent months with one campaign, Free To Donate already achieving over 37,000 signatures.

Ms. Champion was made Shadow Minister for Preventing abuse, a new position in the shadow cabinet. The appointment was made by Labour’s new leader Jeremy Corbyn.

  • COMMENT | What Jeremy Corbyn Has Already Done For The Gay Community

Many of my gay chums often tell me they are not “into politics”. Personally, I’ve always often thought this was a bit odd because I’ve always thought of being gay and being political as going hand in hand.

We have long had things to fight for in the name of fairness and equality and pressure to put on those in power; the long struggle for equal marriage being just one example in recent history.

But politics, especially that coming straight out of Westminster, leaves many cold. And after the recession and all that nasty MP’s expenses business then is it any wonder?

Even if you despise all things political though, the rise of Jeremy Corbyn has been inescapable. And somewhere in the media storm and the thousands of words written about him, there is one announcement that is both very welcome and hugely long overdue.

In unveiling his Shadow Cabinet team, Corbyn named Luciana Berger as the very first Shadow Minister For Mental Health.

Here we need some context: a University of Cambridge study published in September 2014 found that 12 percent of lesbian women and almost 19 percent of bisexual women reported mental health problems, compared with six percent of heterosexual women. Also, 11 percent of gay men and 15 percent of bisexual men reported problems, compared to five percent of heterosexual men.

It’s pretty clear that mental health is an area of huge importance to the continued wellbeing of us all in the LGB community. However long waiting times for an initial hospital consultation and the postcode lottery that results in standards of care being entirely dependent on where you live continue to be a big problem.

And we all know that the Conservative policy of austerity has led to funding cuts to many organisations that were previously there to provide support and advice.

Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here; the appointment of a Shadow Minister is in no way the miracle cure to solve the problem with the current state of care. And to be brutally realistic, we still have a government in power who plan on cutting public services yet more in the next few years. Not a great sign that an already difficult situation will get easier anytime soon. But at least for once we can say with certainty that a political party is actually taking it seriously rather than paying lip service with a brief paragraph in the manifesto at election time.

So yes, these are politicians we are talking about. And we’ve all learnt not to trust them right? So it could turn out to be a naïve hope but just maybe the appointment of Luciana Berger means that with the closer scrutiny a designated minister should bring, there just might be a grown up conversation about mental health care in this country.

Yes. I did say it was possibly a naïve hope.

But mental health matters. Given the statistics it is a topic that touches all of us in the gay community, if not personally then chances are through our closest friends and families.

And that is true, whether you are “into politics” or not.

  • President Putin PR Denies Meeting With Elton John

In a curious twist, President Putin’s press secretary has denied Elton John’s revelation that the pair are to meet to discuss LGBT rights in Russia.

Legendary rock veteran Sir Elton had announced thatPresident Putin had agreed to meet to discuss the state of LGBT rights in Russia. However, the president’s press secretary has denied that Russia’s number one is to meet with the Rocket Man singer.

The Russian President was responsible for signing in an anti-gay law that forbids the “propaganda” of non-traditional relationships to anyone under the age of 18. Same-sex relationships are considered non-traditional in Russia.

Speaking to Russian news agency TASS, Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s press secretary said,

“We are aware [of John’s intention to have a meeting] from media reports, but we haven’t received any signals directly from Sir Elton John.

“Given that there have been many insinuations in the media lately, we are treating information of that kind carefully.”

  • President Putin Agrees To Meet With Elton To Discuss Gay Rights

President Putin has agreed to meet with rock legend Sir Elton John to discuss his nation’s legacy on gay rights.

Legendary rock veteran Sir Elton has asked President Putin for a debate on gay rights. The Russian President was responsible for signing in an anti-gay law that forbids the “propaganda” of non-traditional relationships to anyone under the age of 18. Same-sex relationships are considered non-traditional in Russia.

According to Elton, the president reached out to him after he branded his attitude to gay rights as “ridiculous.”

Putin apparently rang Elton yesterday to accept his invitation to discuss the deplorable conditions that gay people across Russia are finding themselves.

Since the introduction of the anti-gay law, attacks on the LGBT community have been numerous and there has been more than one alleged murder that has rocked the community in Russia.

The news of the meeting come as Putin gives a Russian State Honour to the vehemently anti-gay politician Vitaly Milonov, who was instrumental in bringing about the “gay propaganda” law. The Russian State Honour is the highest award that can be given to a civilian.

Vitaly Milonov has gone on record to call the Eurovision song content a “sodom show” and he branded Stephen Fry as sick over his suicide attempts in 2012.

  • George Takei Slams Kim Davis, Anti-Gay Marriage Clerk

George Takei has slammed Kim Davis calling her “no hero” and suggests her actions are un-American.

Kim Davis the woman who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Kentucky has come under fire by former Star Trek star George Takei.

The 78-year-old star took to Facebook to slam Ms. Davis, who was jailed for contempt of court. He said,

“So let us be clear: This woman is no hero to be celebrated. She broke her oath to uphold the Constitution and defied a court order so she could deny government services to couples who are legally entitled to be married.”

Ms. Davis who left the jailhouse to the ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ soundtrack yesterday to applause and cheers she cried,

“Thank you all so much, I love you all so very much. I just to give God the glory his people have rallied and you are a strong people. We serve a living God, who knows exactly where each and everyone of us is at. Just keep on pressing. Don’t let down, because he is here.”

Mr. Takei went on to suggest that while she was entitled to her beliefs but should not break the law whilst practising them, saying,

“In our society, we obey civil laws, not religious ones. To suggest otherwise is, simply put, entirely un-American.”

The Kentucky clerk was released from jail and is expected to return to work shortly. It has not appeared that she has changed her mind and risks breaking the law if she continues to deny gay couples marriage licenses.

Calls have been made for Ms. Davis to step aside if she is unable to fulfil her job.

While Ms. Davis has been in jail her place of work have been issuing marriage licenses to “all legally eligible couples” in the county. If, when she returns she continues to deny gay couples, she will likely end up in jail again.

Same-sex marriage was legalised in the US, across all 50 states in June this year.

  • Ivan Massow Backs Zac Goldsmith For London Mayor

Ivan Massow, has backed MP Zac Goldsmith for London mayor in 2016 and is inviting those who backed his campaign to vote for the MP, when the time comes, as well.

Four declared Conservative candidates are now vying for the votes of Londoners for the 2016 Mayoral race, which will see Boris Johnson’s tenure as London’s mayor end.

The four candidates which were successfully chosen by the Conservative party are: openly gay Andrew Boff, MP Zac Goldsmith, Deputy Mayor for policing and crime Stephen Greenhaigh and Syed Kamall, who is an MEP for London.

Ivan Massow had mounted his own campaign to run for mayor but was unsuccessful at the primaries stage that saw him lose out to four Tory in-siders, including MP Zac Goldsmith. A statement from the businessman said,

“He believes that Zac is the only candidate with the gravitas and potential, not just as a Conservative candidate, but also as Mayor – to carry the torch of Ivan’s ideas on social mobility, policing and even more so – how London can further embrace entrepreneurship, micro business, incubators and mentoring.”

Zac Goldsmith voted in favour of the same-sex marriage law in 2013, and has consistently voted in favour of pro-LGBT laws.

  • COMMENT | Aylan Kurdi must not be this week’s hot news story

It’s been a big week for armchair activism.

We all saw the picture a few days ago of the drowned body of three year old Aylan Kurdi on a Turkish beach. The haunting, heartbreaking images travelled around the world, dominating both mainstream and social media alike.

It was a news story that so far has marked a turning point in press coverage and public opinion of the ongoing refugee crisis. In the Facebook and Twitter world when sharable content is the key to make us sit up and pay attention, giving the story an unspeakably sad and very human face, suddenly gave it a hook.

And all it took was a viral image. And a dead child.

So the good news, if anything can be classed as good news in this whole desperately sad story, is that the death of Aylan Kurdi and the photographs that were printed and shared thousands of times within hours has changed the popular perception of refugees. Guess what everyone? It turns out the ‘’swarm’’ of “migrants” trying to gain entry into Europe were actual human beings after all; mothers, fathers, children.

There is nothing more shocking, more heartbreaking than a dead child. It is an image that speaks of waste, of innocence destroyed, of unimaginable grief. Nobody wants to see photographs of a drowned toddler popping up on their Facebook but the horror and outrage produced was enough that even Downing Street has been forced to acknowledge that the British government has been forced to look again at their policy due to the change in public mood. So a big congratulations to everyone who retweeted or hit the “Like’’ button on that article from The Guardian. We showed them.

If I sound cynical, I’m sorry to say I am a little. The nature of our 24 hour news cycle and the constant hunger it and social media creates for new material means that there is a real risk that this chapter in the worst refugee crisis since World War Two will be viewed as this week’s hot story before the popular news agenda moves on to the next coffee time discussion topic.

This is an example of just how much popular opinion and sincere outpourings of outrage and compassion can jolt government into action. At least in the short term. And the problem is it is very short term. The harsh public scrutiny that the British government and the rest of Europe is under in the wake of the death of Aylan Kurdi must not stop when the next Facebook friendly news story comes along and saturates our news feeds.

Remember Cecil The Lion? After he was shot in Zimbabwe by that American dentist earlier this summer, he was everywhere. I remember signing petitions calling banning imports of lion trophies to the US and European Union. And one could not move for pictures of both poor Cecil and Walter Palmer, the American hunter who killed him. But then the photographs and saturation coverage and serious discussion in the media about conservation in Africa faded.

At the risk of offending hardcore animal lovers, it would be very inappropriate to compare the fate of one lion in the jungle to the desperation situation facing thousands of refugees fleeing the Middle East. But that story from just July of this year is the perfect example of the modern news cycle; blanket coverage, a heavy social media presence and a huge groundswell of public outrage triggering much debate and discussion until the story burns itself out and fades from public consciousness.

The size and scale of the refugee crisis means that it is very much ongoing. This new wave of public empathy and protest triggered by the heartbreaking photos from a Turkish beach has forced governments to act. It’s a start. But clearly only a start and for the sake of the lives of thousands of men, women and children it must continue and build.

Aylan Kurdi must not become this week’s Cecil The Lion. He deserves better than that.

  • Former MP Who Voted “Consistently” Against Pro-LGBT Laws Dies, Aged 83

  • Welsh Lib Dems Launch LGBT+ Rights Campaign

The Welsh Liberal Democrats are launching their campaign promoting the benefits of the Human Rights Act in advancing LGBT+ rights.

At Saturday’s Pride Cymru, Wales’ biggest LGBT pride event, the party will be campaigning against plans by the Conservatives to scrap the Human Rights Act – plans which were blocked by the Liberal Democrats as part of the Coalition Government.

The Human Rights Act has forced the UK Government to introduce the Gender Recognition Act, found the unequal age of consent for same-sex relationships to be illegal in 1997, and forced the Government to allow LGBT+ people to serve openly in the armed forces in 1999.

Liberal Democrats have a strong record of defending LGBT+ rights in Wales, the UK and across the world. Most recently, the Welsh Lib Dems have led the charge to improve public services for trans people in Wales and establish a Welsh Gender Identity Clinic.

Kirsty Williams AM, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:

“LGBT+ rights are human rights – it couldn’t get any simpler. The rights of any person of any sexuality or gender – to free speech, to protection from discrimination, to life itself – are exactly the same as anyone else’s. That’s why Liberal Democrats fight to protect them.

“Human rights laws have been vital in protecting LGBT+ people from discrimination by the law. Without them we could still have an unequal age of consent for same-sex relationships, trans people would not be allowed to change their legal sex, and LGBT+ people would be unable to serve openly in the armed forces.

“The Human Rights Act has made positive change happen for our country’s LGBT+ community. That’s why I’m so appalled at Tory plans to scrap these laws and do away with these protections. Liberal Democrats blocked them within Government, and we’ll carry on fighting them now.

“As many people as possible need to oppose these proposals. That’s why we’re launching our campaign today at www.welshlibdems.wales/lgbt, and I urge everyone to back our calls.”

  • One In Ten Do Not Know Where The Prime Minister Lives

Most modern Brits have no idea about UK politics – and one in ten doesn’t even know where the Prime Minister lives, a study has revealed. The poll of 2,000 adults showed nearly two-thirds of adults’ rate their political knowledge as average to poor.

More than four in ten said their understanding was weak because they didn’t watch the news and didn’t want to read political stories.

Top clangers include one-third not knowing the difference between Ed and David Miliband and the roles they play in government.

One in ten didn’t even know what number Downing Street the Prime Minister lives at.

7% of those surveyed even thought ex-PM Gordon Brown was the current Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The research was conducted to mark the launch of the new series of Yes, Prime Minister series on Tuesday at 9pm on Gold, which found that 41% can’t keep up with government affairs as they change so frequently.

Steve North, General Manager of Gold, said:

”Some terminology and policies are obviously very complex but it’s worrying that so many adults don’t know rudimentary facts such as who the current Foreign Secretary is.

”It would seem people really struggle with government terminology and it’s a shame such a large proportion of the country are embarrassed by their lack of understanding.”

The poll found one quarter of respondents had no idea which party Ed Balls represents, while more than one third of adults could only name one to four British Prime Ministers.

Only 60% knew it was the chief whip’s job to keep party rebels in line.

Surprisingly one in twenty thought a chief whip was an MP who rode horses and 7% thought it was the head chef in Westminster.

When it comes to political jargon we have no idea either- when quizzed on terms such as MOD, GDP and FCO, many adults answered incorrectly.

Bizarrely, one in 20 thought MoD stood for Ministry of Deportation and 15% thought GDP thought meant Government Demands Priority (opposed to Gross Domestic Product).

When asked what a shadow cabinet was – more than one in twenty thought it was a dark grey piece of furniture and others said it was a meeting of disgraced politicians.

15% didn’t know what a ‘white paper’ was.

Furthermore, only 82 % knew that William Hague was the Foreign Secretary – other answers given were Will-i-am, Teresa May and William Shakespeare.

One in five Brits had the good grace to be embarrassed by their lack of knowledge when it comes to current affairs, while 42% said they would like to improve their knowledge,
