  • 5 tips on how to keep your New Years resolutions

5 tips on how to keep your New Years resolutions

Midnight hits and we all imagine that we can become a different person; the parts of ourselves that are less than perfect come under intense scrutiny. And indeed it is certainly a bleak outlook; only 8% keep to their resolutions, with most of the drop off being within the first week. So how do I commit to my new year’s resolution and actually make it work for me.

    1) Planning
Ok boring I know, but if you want to be successful in any way you need to prepare. This comes in many forms. For example, if you are trying a healthy eating plan, the leftover food and chocolates will only act as temptation. If you are joining a gym or taking part in any sports activity, make sure you have the correct equipment ready to go. A calendar is your best weapon on making any form of change as it will help you integrate the change around your existing lifestyle and responsibilities.

    2) Be realistic
This is key to why most resolutions fail. It can be that people want the end goal without working towards it. With some things you may see immediate results and feel the benefit however most life changing goals are slow burners. For example, if you want to quit smoking are you equipped to go cold turkey on the first of January after smoking 20 a day for the last three years? With any form of addiction either replacement or substitution is proven to be more effective in the long term.

    3) Motivation
So you’ve made the resolutions, you’ve tweeted it, set it up on Facebook so the world can see how serious you are about it. Why are you doing it? If it wasn’t New Year’s Eve and everybody else wasn’t making outrageous claims would you still care about your goal. Realistically making any change in life is hard. With anything in life we have peaks and troughs in activity and it is motivation that pulls us through the low periods.

If you are joining a gym there is also a financial implication that will be in place long after January has faded. If you are making a lifestyle change, you need to be able to follow through on.

    4) Fad to Habit
Different experts hold different opinions on how long it takes for a habit to form. The general census seems to land it between 21-28 days before the new activity has become part of your routine. If you make it past the first month you are doing excellently but habits can still be broken and it is not safe to assume that you have made a change for life

    5) Be kind to yourself
Strict and firm boundaries are important to adapting to any lifestyle changes. You’ll tell yourself it doesn’t matter if you miss today’s gym session or had a smoke while you were drunk. It does – you’ve broken the promise you made to yourself.

However, it’s not worth chucking away all the progress you’ve made so far. You’re human and you made a mistake, it’s worth remembering that Rome wasn’t built in a day and Ben Cohen didn’t get unreasonably hot over night!

  • It’s the 12th night – so are you taking down your tree today?

So today it’s the 12th night after Christmas and it’s time to say goodbye to your lovely Christmas tree and decorations.

when should you take down your Christmas tree

It’s the 5th of January and it’s customary to take down the crimbo decs and dump the Christmas tree – or put it in the loft for another year. Some think that you should wait until the 6th when it’s the Epiphany.

So what happens if you don’t take down your Christmas decorations, well, apparently some believe a year of terrible luck will be visited upon you and your household if you don’t take your tree down on the 12th night after Christmas, but we think it’s more about making room for all those Valentine’s presents.

Did you know the Christmas tree is actually a Pagan Christmas origin according to Anthony Simpson a Pagan writer here at THEGAYUK, they saw evergreen as symbolic of the eternal cycles of nature: birth, life, death and re-birth. The re-birth always being seen as a result of the sun’s return. There are actually five things that the Pagans introduced which are now considered Christmas traditions.

  • A study finds that Male/Female WC signage could be replaced by room descriptions

A study finds that Male/Female WC signage could be replaced by room descriptions

A research team were granted £50,000 to study whether terms to describe public toilets were accessible. They’ve released their findings.

A research team from Sheffield Hallam University were awarded nearly £50,000 in June last year, from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to research the way public toilets are designed, “in an effort to assess if they are fit for purpose for the UK’s diverse 21st Century society.”

The paper , which was published last month, points out that school toilets are one of the first places where children learn that “disabled and queer bodies are out of place”.

The research is now complete and they managed to find some interesting ways of ensuring that people don’t feel left out or marginalised when using public facilities. The 7000-word report outlines how some respondents thought that changing the male/female icon with a description of the room’s content could be more helpful.

Education and Disability Studies researcher Dr Jenny Slater wrote,

” A suggestion from participants was to write on the toilet door the contents of the toilet cubicle, e.g. toilets with urinals, toilets without urinals, larger toilet with grab bars.

“Participants thought it was important for others to not judge people’s choice of toilet, but to allow people to use whichever space was accessible for them (‘accessible’ being used in the broadest sense of the word).

“This would mean critically considering the signage on toilet doors in order to understand how toilets do not just illustrate categorisation by gender, disability (and historically, race), but also actively produce such categories.”

Former soap star turned pop star Adam Rickett knows how to cure the thirst after uploading this hotel selfie revealing that he still has the six pack that made us all go weak at the knees during the 90s.

Speaking to THEGAYUK (issue 3) about how he manages to keep his body in a shipshape condition the 38-year-old star revealed, that he does all his training at home. He also told us that he has to keep his trademark six pack because of an issue with his back. He’s suffered from a chronic back condition since he was 17 and relies on a strong core to keep him mobile.

    He said,

“I do it all at home. I have a really bad back so from the age of 17 I had to exercise every day otherwise my back gets really knackered.

I always felt a bit of phoney, because everyone was like “oh my god look at his body” and I was like, well if I don’t I’m f**ked. I still do all the sit-ups and I’ve still got my six-pack.”

Some Celebrity Big Brother viewers think that Stacy Francis is “homophobic” after calling  Austin Armacost a “gay boy”.

    Celebrity Big Brother 2017

Some fans of the show are calling out Stacy Francis as “homophobic” after asking whether Ray J would be comfortable sleeping in the same bed as “the gay boy”. She was referring to Austin Armacost, who is openly gay.

The discussion was between housemates Coleen Nolan, James Jordan, James Cosmo and Stacy, who were discussing which bed each celebrity would take.

Apparently, US R&B star Ray J, who was asleep at the time when celebs were choosing beds, didn’t want to sleep in the same bed as DJ Brandon Block. The only other space available was bunking with Austin. On hearing the news Stacy asked,

“So [Ray J] didn’t want to sleep with Brandon? But he will sleep with a gay boy? The boy that wants to… the gay boy.

“Isn’t Austin gay? So [Ray J] okay with that?”

STUNNED: Stacy seemingly stunned her fellow housemates when she called Austin “gay boy”. She quickly said that she was being “sarcastic”.

The conversation went momentarily quiet before Stacy quipped she was being “sarcastic” and that everyone was “so serious”.

Well, needless to say, Twitter were right on it.
