  • Ofcom Will Not Investigate Channel 5 Over Winston McKenzie’s “Homophobic” Remarks

Ofcom has announced that it won’t investigate remarks made by Winston McKenzie in this series of Celebrity Big Brother even though it has received nearly 400 official complaints.

The media watchdog Ofcom has said it won’t be investigating Channel 5 after it broadcast the “homophobic” and bigoted views by London Mayoral hopeful Winston McKenzie.

When questioned whether he could deal with gay people during his time in the Celebrity Big Brother house, McKenzie said in his initial VT he,

…Could cope with a homosexual in the house. I guess I’ll just have to stand with my back against a brick wall all the time,” he said.

A statement released by the watchdog said,

“We are satisfied that Channel 5 broadcast clear and appropriate warnings about the potentially offensive content, and intervened in heated exchanges and situations at appropriate times.

“We have also taken into account the audience’s expectations of this well-established reality format, and that the series is aired after the watershed.”

During his time in the house McKenzie tried to explain his feelings about same-sex parenting, which he said he feels is akin to child abuse. McKenzie was nominated by the LGBT charity Stonewall as Bigot Of The Year in 2013 for the comment.

  • LGBT Mental Health Charity Shuts For The Last Time

LGBT Mental Health Charity Shuts For The Last Time

The mental health charity, PACE has closed due to “local authority budgets”.

The London-based PACE mental health charity aimed at helping the LGBT community is due to close on the 29th January 2016 citing cuts in funding and a tough financial climate.

The 31-year-old company is due to cease all operations from the 29th January.

A statement on the charity’s website said,

“The decision to close the doors on PACE after 31 years of supporting the LGBT+ community is one that we have taken with a very heavy heart.

“The financial climate is very difficult for small charities, especially those delivering services at a local level with continuing cuts to local authority budgets. Sadly despite work to support the charity raising the necessary income needed has proved increasingly hard and it has become clear that it is no longer financially viable for the charity to continue.

“The staff and trustees will work to ensure that PACE’s clients are given as much support as possible during this difficult time and referred to other support services as far as is possible.

“We would like to thank all those who have supported us and worked with us to deliver vital support services for the LGBT+ community. A very big thank you to all the staff and volunteers over the last 31 years wo have provided so much support and dedication to the community.”

In November PACE released findings that showed that 34 per cent of young LGB people have tried to commit suicide in the last year, spelling out how necessary a charity, which focuses on the mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in the UK, is at this time.

  • Poppers To Be Made Illegal From April

The UK government has voted to ban Poppers and other “legal highs” in law that is due to come into force in April.

The new law which is due to be enacted on April 1st, will mean that if you sell or offer Poppers to anyone you could land up in jail for up to 7 years.

A last ditch effort was made to exempt alkyl nitrites (poppers) from the Psychoactive Substances bill, however it failed 309 votes to 228.

Speaking about the new law and the way in which it is written Lord Paddick told THEGAYUK:

“it’s any substance that changes your mental state like making you feel happy.

“So suppliers of air fresher for example and potentially florists could be arrested because the scent given off by roses makes people feel romantic, makes them feel better.

Last week Conservative MP Mike Freer shared a document from the Advisory Committee of the Misuse of Drugs which said that poppers were “not seen to be capable of having harmful effects sufficient to constitute a societal problem.”

In 2013 two men were found to have alkyl nitrites in their system after they died, however their deaths were not linked to their usage of poppers.

In 2013 there were 8,416 alcohol-related deaths in the UK.

  • Why Do I Wake Up With A Hard On?

Everything you wanted to know about the morning glory.

It’s just a part of life, you wake up and your little fella is already up – aching to be unleashed and go forth into the day, but why do we get these erections?

Here are five reasons you could be waking up with an erection every morning.

    1) They aren’t actually morning erections; they are night-time ones, called Nocturnal Penile Tumescence. The average man, without erectile dysfunction, has around three to five full lob ons during the night according to the NHS website, each one lasting up to 35 minutes.

    2) It’s thought to be caused by the REM (rapid eye movement) part of your sleep. The part of your brain that releases norepinephrine located in the locus coeruleus is switched off which could result in boners. The REM cycle tends to happen just before you wake up.

    3) Testosterone levels are at their highest in the AM, which can be attached to how randy you feel. Although testosterone doesn’t cause your duvet pole, it could make you think naughty thoughts – which will lead to a stiffy.

    4) Some people think it’s to stop you wetting the bed Peeing with a raging horn is more difficult so it can perhaps, some suggest prevent bed-wetting, we’re not convinced.

    5) Full bladder, a full bladder could be the reason you’re waking with a stonker. It can stimulate part of the spinal cord that could bring on a reflex erection.

  • Joshua Rafter: Women Have Gay Friends Because We Listen, Husbands Do Not

Speaking to THEGAYUK leading openly gay businessman Joshua Rafter has explained why he thinks women want gay best friends.

You may remember Josh Rafter from the 2nd ever series of Big Brother, in which Brian Dowling championed, but Josh is one of Soho’s stalwart characters, having led the Outlet, a property management company in the heart of Soho, to its 20th year.

Sitting down with the editor of THEGAYUK, Josh explained why he thinks women love gay men.

“Women like to have gay friends because they listen and the husbands and boyfriends don’t.

“We listen and that’s one thing I think gay people do – listen and we’re there to offer our opinion – right or wrong it’s really nice to have someone listen!”

A report in psychologytoday.com in 2012, suggested that women’s fondness of gay men happened for three reasons.

Firstly they are “they are emotionally attracted to the fearlessness and lack of self-consciousness in gay men.”

Secondly “straight women love gay men because closeness with gay men provides a window into how the minds of men works”

Lastly, the report suggested, “because most straight women don’t feel sexual toward gay men.”

  • Wondering how to get over the dreaded effects of jet lag?

Our body clock is a very intelligent feature, which can been thrown off as we travel hundreds of miles per hour, through multiple time zones. Michela Vaginini nutritionist at Nature’s Plus, has given us her top 5 tips for beating jet lag. She says, “Once your body’s natural 24-hour clock has been disrupted there is nothing that can completely beat jet lag. However, there are things you can do, to ease its symptoms and enjoy your holiday.”

    1)Look at the Sun

To rebalance your day and night rhythm try to force yourself to get up just after sunrise. To boost your cortisol production, which is responsible for waking up in the morning, look towards the sun when waking, an open window will do the trick if you can’t get outside. In the evening, look at the sunset until it gets dark. This will stimulate melatonin production in your brain, which is also known as the ‘sleeping hormone’. To help your body relax take Dyno Mins Magnesium by Nature’s Plus (revital.co.uk, £17.75).

    2)Stay away from COFFEE

Several studies have identified dietary components, such as glucose, sodium, ethanol or caffeine as capable of phase-shifting day and night rhythms. Be careful with sugary and junk foods that might have some stimulating additives or flavourings. Stay away from coffee, colas, teas and other energetic drinks or herbs. Be careful with crisps and salted peanuts – they are very high in salt. Try to reduce your salt intake to 2g a day max (1/2 teaspoon). Make sure you read labels as some snacks may contain MSG, which is a popular flavour enhancer, also known as a brain stimulant.
Having an alcoholic drink might seem like a good idea to help you fall asleep but in fact, it will compromise sleep quality and dehydrate you, making it more difficult to adapt to new time zones.

    3)Turn off your phone

Long-time exposure to blue light from our phones, tablets and TVs can interfere with a production of melatonin and confuse our tired body, which will take it as a daylight and sign to stay awake.

    4)Go for a walk

Sunlight stimulates the secretion of serotonin, known as a ‘happy’ hormone that will give you a quick boost of energy. In addition, when our body gets physically tired it induces a deeper better sleep.

    5)Support your adrenal glands

These peanut-size masses of tissue located on top of your kidneys are essential for your stress response and sleeping patterns. When you are jet lagged they are doubling up their workload to keep you awake so they need an extra support. The most important nutrients for adrenal health are vitamins B, which you can find in eggs, organic meat, green leafy vegetables and whole grains (Don’t get tempted with sugary muffins!). Spirulina and algae extract are great super foods for our adrenal glands providing essential minerals and amino acids. To get a complete green foods blend, add a tablespoon of Nature’s Plus Green Lightning (revital.co.uk, £26.40) to your coconut water and feel the energy!
