  • Will The Queen Address Anti-Gay Discrimination In Commonwealth Speech?

For the first time in Her Majesty’s 61 year reign, the Queen has signalled that she supports gay rights.

In a live television broadcast the British monarch will sign a new Commonwealth charter designed to stamp out discrimination against the LGBT community and promote the ‘empowerment’ of women. The broadcast has been described as a “watershed” moment.

    The charter reads:

“We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.”

The ‘other grounds’ clause within the charter is intended to refer to sexuality, however, the Daily Mail reports the terms gay and lesbian were omitted because some Commonwealth countries still have anti-gay laws.

    A diplomatic source said:

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace, said:

“In this charter, the Queen is endorsing a decision taken by the Commonwealth.”

    But he added:

“The Queen does not take a personal view on these issues. The Queen’s position is apolitical, as it is on all matters of this sort.”

Ben Summerskill of Stonewall, said the Queen had taken “an historic step forward” on gay rights, and said “The Palace has finally caught up with public opinion.”

Homosexual acts are still illegal in 41 of the 54 Commonwealth Nations – and include penalties such as the death sentence in parts of Nigeria. Those found guilty of a homosexual act can expect life sentences in prison in Trinidad, Tobago, Malaysia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Bangladesh and Guyana.

Only five Commonwealth countries recognise same-sex relationships, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand.

The Queen will be joined by Beverly Knight, the Noisettes and Sir Richard Branson at a service at Westminster Abbey, before making her address.

Victoria Beckham’s husband, David, has hit out at critics who accused him of using a bum and crotch double in his latest advert for H&M.

When asked about the bum double rumours on Live French television, the 37 year old footballer and posh spice husband, said:

‘No I can say the crotch is mine and the backside is mine as well. ‘I heard this the other day. Someone said that I had a stand-in for my bum, but no, I can confirm that’s my bum.’

In a recent interview, Beckham said he had completed his own stunts on the Guy Ritchie directed advert, but on closer inspection it doesn’t seem t be true.

Beckham is quoted as saying: ‘It was good fun playing an action hero for the day, getting to do all the stunts and ending up in unexpected situations.’

The father-of-four first launched his line of undergarments and casual loungewear, where costs range from £7.99 to £24.99, a year ago with a photo campaign.

  • Are We Ready To Dump LGBT Term?

Pink Therapy has made a case for the LGBT term to be changed to “Gender and Sexual Diversity.” Are we ready as a community to change names?

LGBT has been used since the 1990s to denote people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans. The acronym has grown, but still cannot contain the diversity of the people who are not straight and monogamous.

According to their latest press release Pink Therapy say:

LGBT ignores the true diversity of sexuality and gender. Pink Therapy believes GSD, Gender and Sexual Diversity, is a more inclusive label.

LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), and its extended forms (LGBTIQQA, or LGBT+) are exclusive of the great variety of people who don’t live ‘traditional’ lifestyles (e.g. heterosexual or monogamous).

The term ‘GSD’, or Gender and Sexual Diversity, encompasses people from any lifestyle, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Gender and sexuality exists in such a wide variety of forms, that LGBT fails to describe a large number of people. Easily recognisable groups, such as asexual and BDSM, are ignored by the classical acronym, but many people have identities which are an amalgam of different types, such as being bi-romantic, but homosexual, a member of the BDSM community, and a swinger.

The result of this exclusion is both legal and practical. BDSM is legally considered by many psychiatrists as a ‘disorder’ in most countries, and perceived publicly as a perversion, despite all scientific evidence to the contrary. Couples who engage in a BDSM or kink relationship can and do lose their jobs and children if they are discovered.

Not only that, couples in these often uncounted groups are not provided for by mainstream counselling services, due to a lack of awareness or concern. In recent research, Pink Therapy found 38% of their respondents identified as having a BDSM lifestyle and 48% of the heterosexuals identified as BDSMers who had very few places to resolve their relationship issues.

Respecting how a person feels, and not how a person ‘should’ feel, has always been a central motivation for the Human Rights movement. GSD extends this basic right to people who are excluded by LGBT+.

Pink Therapy advocates the new terminology in the hopes it will foster greater inclusivity.
