  • Top 10 Gay Icon Dames

    We are fast approaching the New Year’s Honours List when HM The Queen will make a few more illustrious women who have made significant contributions to society a Dame (of the British Empire to be exact). It’s a very select ‘club’ and includes some of our very favourite ladies who have enriched all our lives one way or another. So to honour them, here’s THE GAY UK‘S TOP TEN DAMES

    1) DAME JUDI DENCH: if you can win an OSCAR for a performance that lasts no longer than 8 minutes (‘Shakespeare in Love’) then you really are a Star in every sense of the word.

    2) DAME MAGGIE SMITH: two-time OSCAR winner and the cutting queen of the perfect put-down with her scary withered looks, we’d watch this grand Dame if she was just reading the phone directory out loud.

    3) DAME HELEN MIRREN: whom we actually call Deputy Queen after she stole our hearts and her first OSCAR for playing H.M. with such dignity and style.

    4) DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY: the brassy girl from Tiger Bay who has belting out hits for years and sued for belting her staff too. We love her regardless.

    5) DAME KIRI TE KANAWA: we fell for this operatic diva from New Zealand when we saw her recording ‘West Side Story’ with Leonard Bernstein (later parodied by French and Saunders who both should be made Dames too)

    6) DAME JOAN PLOWRIGHT (Baroness Olivier): if you had ever had the good fortune to see this sublime actress on stage you’d appreciate that she was every bit as good as her famous late husband.

    7) DAME EILEEN ATKINS: celebrated actress & writer (she co-created Upstairs Downstairs) with a lengthy stunning resume, but in our eyes she will always be the wonderful snobby Miss Deborah (and big sister to Dame Judi as Miss Matty) in ‘Cranford‘ TV series

    8) DAME DIANE RIGG: a multi-awarding winning ‘serious’ actress and one of the first to ‘bare all’ on a West End stage, she is still however best known for her sexy leather clad Emma Peel in the hit TV series ‘The Avengers ‘in the 1960’s

    9) BARONESS BAKEWELL D.B.E.: one of very first female TV presenters on the heavyweight current affairs programmes to be taken seriously. Never afraid to be forthright and frank with her views she was dubbed ‘the thinking man’s crumpet’.

    We couldn’t decide on 10th place so we are awarding this spot to two great Dames

    10) DAME JULIE ANDREWS: probably one of the most ‘English’ of our list even though she left our shores many years ago to climb every mountain and fly over chimney pots.

    10) DAME EVELYN GLENNIE: profoundly deaf since 12 years old this Scottish virtuoso percussionist not only doe she make such incredible music, Dame Evelyn has a seemingly limitless capacity to inspire all of us.

  • Sam Smith Only Artist To Sell 1MILLION Records In UK and US

    Sam Smith has become the only artist in the world to score a million-selling album in both the UK and the US during 2014, the Official Charts Company confirms today.

    Smith‘s In The Lonely Hour passed the 1 million landmark in the UK during the past 24 hours, making it only the second artist album to reach the landmark this side of the Atlantic.

    The confirmation comes 24 hours after his album was confirmed a million-seller in the United States, by Nielsen Music.

    Sam told OfficialCharts.com:

    “OFFICIALLY sold 1 MILLION copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement. Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album.”

    By Midnight last night, In The Lonely Hour had sold 1.007 million copies (based on Official Charts data), making it only the second artist album to achieve the feat in the UK this year, after Ed Sheeran’s X hit the milestone at the end of November. In the US, Only Sam Smith, Taylor Swift and the Frozen soundtrack have passed the million-mark this year, according to Nielsen Music.

    The success of Smith and Sheeran also makes 2014 the first year since 2011 when more than one album has passed 1 million sales in the UK – in 2011, Adele’s 21 and 19, Michael Buble’s Christmas and Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans all passed 1 million sales.

    Official Charts’ Chief Executive Martin Talbot, said:

    “Many festive congratulations to Sam. To hit a million anywhere is impressive, but to become the only artist in the world to do so on both sides of the Atlantic is quite remarkable. His journey in 2014, from unknown newcomer winning the Brit Awards’ Critics Choice award to internationally renowned double million-seller, has been incredible.”

    The BPI’s Gennaro Castaldo added:

    “It’s proving to be another amazing year for British artists, who are not only dominating the charts at home but continue to fly the flag for British music around the world.

    “Like Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith is enjoying an absolutely stellar year, but for him to sell a million copies of his debut album in the UK and, remarkably, the US within the same 12 month-period that he collected his BRITs Critics Choice Award is a truly outstanding achievement. British music has unearthed another great talent that has all the makings of a global superstar, following in the traditions of Amy Winehouse and Adele.”

    In The Lonely Hour debuted Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart in May and June this year with impressive first-week sales of 102,000. It spent a second week at the top returning for a further fortnight 12 weeks later.

    The record has also been a regular feature at the top end of the chart, having spent just one week outside the Top 5 since its release.

    Sam’s album has also spawned a string of successful singles, including Number 1s Money On My Mind and Stay With Me, as well as Top 10s I’m Not The Only One (Number 3) and Like I Can (9). To date, To date, tracks downloaded from his album total 2.48 million, have been streamed 87 million times and viewed on video streaming sites in the UK 48 million times.

  • Joan Rivers leaves money to AIDS charity in her will

    THEGAYUK has learned that the late Joan Rivers has willed part of her reported $150 million fortune to God’s Love We Deliver, a charity that delivers meals to people living with AIDS.

    The comedian who died a short time after a medical procedure in New York in September, at the age of 81, has left parts of her estate to a number of charities including: Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Jewish Guild for the Blind, the Simon Wisenthal Centre, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Jewish Home and Hospital Foundation

    God’s Love We Deliver delivers over 4600 nutritious meals every day to people living with AIDS and other illnesses across New York and New Jersey, with the help of 8000 volunteers, who help prepare and deliver the meals ever year.

    Rivers was a supporter of gay rights and won herself a legion of gay fans across the globe.

  • Azealia Banks Feels Discriminated Against After Calling Gay Men F*ggots

    Failed pop singer Azealia Banks has gone a Twitter rampage after criticising the way gay men react to the word F*ggot.

    The volley of offensive tweets started yesterday (4th December), when Azealia Banks, 23, criticised gay men for the way they reacted to slang and offensive words. She stated, ‘Gay men be saying the most misogynist sh*t, but as soon as you call them a f*ggot they wanna get upset.

    ‘Somebody gotta check these f*ggots man. I don’t give a f*ck!! NO MAN Is going challenge my femininity. It’s not happening.

    ‘Gay men can call you a bitch, and talk about YA hair and YA nails, but as soon as you call them a f*ggot, all sh*t breaks loose’

    The singer, who describes herself as bisexual, then seemed to goad the gay community by tweeting a further rant, ‘U can’t call me a flop and call A b*tch and use any insult you want against me n then call amnesty international Wen I bring the F Bomb out

    ‘This is a spar!!! You gotta war!! Don’t clutch YA pearls when I bring out the F BOMB….!!!!!!’

    She then went on to complain that she felt victimised, saying, that she felt ‘discriminated against’.

    The 212 singer, first used the offensive word against Perez Hilton in January 2013, when he dared criticise her. He also suggested that he kill himself, as he was a ‘messy faggot.’

    Banks’s comment was criticised by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), stating, ‘Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do.’

    A number of fans also took to criticise her use of the word, saying, ‘please take that slur out mom’ and ‘u have gay fans wtf is wrong w you’

    Banks’s debut album Broke with Expensive Taste debuted at number 62 on the UK charts and sold just 1751 copies. Total album sales in the US have been reported at just over 15,000 copies. Making her one of the worst charting major signed artists of all time, despite her strong presence on social media.

    Banks’s last 5 singles have failed to chart in any territory in the top 100.

    Her second album, Business and Pleasure is expected to be released in 2016.

    Dustin Lance Black and Tom Daley have been together for over a year, and to celebrate DLB posted a picture of the two of them, together before Tom bravely came out via YouTube a year ago.

    It was the viral video that gay men everywhere collectively had been waiting for, the one where Tom Daley, champion Olympian would come out to the world.

    At the time he mentioned that he had met someone who he was really happy with, and the media (not us, we might add), went into speculation about who it might be.

    It wasn’t long however, until award winning Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the screen play for MILK, was named as the man who had stolen Tom’s heart.

    Now we know this is a little old (like three days already) but we thought we’d revisit the Zac Efron climax without hands skit with James Franco and have a closer look.
