Will Young has been confirmed as the second celebrity contestant on the BBC entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing which starts its 14th series in September. The first contestant to be announced was politician Ed Balls.

    The multi-million selling artist said,

“As a fan of Strictly for years, I have always imagined myself on the show, but the timing has not been right… until now! Music is my passion and the dancing I have done has always been with a microphone in hand. Now there will be no microphone or band, just me, my partner and the dance floor. Strictly is a show with fantastic live music and has an ethos of positivity and growth. I practice these two things every day, and I will try my hardest to be the best dancer possible,”

One question remains, as Will Young is openly gay, will he have a same-sex partner on the dancefloor?

  • Siara is the second housemate to be evicted from Big Bro

Since Friday, the public have been voting to save BEAR, HEAVY D, LEWIS and SAIRA.

    CHANNEL 5

During last night’s Channel 5 programme, Celebrity Big Brother host Emma Willis announced live to the house that the celebrity with the fewest votes and therefore, the second celebrity to leave would be Siara.

Following the announcement, broadcaster Siara said her goodbyes and left the house, greeted by Emma and a mixed reaction from the crowd.

    CHANNEL 5

On asked by Emma how it feels to be out Siara grinned: “Its’ just great to see normal people.”

On having other ‘big characters’ in the house Saira said: “I don’t know, for me I just felt I was either being two faced or being alright.”

On seeing that James, Chloe, Aubrey, Katie, Heavy D all nominated her, “I’m surprised by Katie just because I didn’t get to know her but think she’s quite influenced by her little clique.”

On forcing her opinions on people, “I an opinionated person and we come from different place, I think I should use this (mouth) less and listen more. I knew that some people in there got me like Ricky and Sammy Fox.”

Siara added: “I have an opinion and I find it very different when people don’t, I think a lot of people are sitting on the fence, I am opinionated, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, I tried my best to reign it in but it is a madhouse.”

On Bear, “I have had a journey with him, honestly, he’s a prankster, he’s a young lad having fun, he’s on the trip of his life, he takes it too far, if you give him attention…, deep down he’s a good man, I felt it, I don’t think I would say that if I didn’t mean it.”

On Lewis and Marnie’s ‘relationship,’ “It’s been 12 days, in 12 days, I think you make a friend, they say it’s genuine, all I can do is respect that.”

Siara added, “I’ve come out and I see people, and myself in a different light, it’s been a journey.”

Finally, Emma asked her who she would like to win, “Samantha Fox.”

Emma then announced the next CBB bombshell – the 3 safe Housemates had to deliver killer nominations face-to-face.

Over the next three days, Housemates will play a game of chance during a week of risk taking. Every decision will come with a cost that will leave one housemate paying a hefty price.

Big Brother returns tonight at 10.30pm.

Christopher Biggins that told The Sun that he is mortified by the comments he made during his time of Big Brother.

He told Dan Wootton, the Sun’s Entertainment editor,

“I found Katie and said ‘I am mortified. I would never do anything to upset you. I love you and I’m really sorry’.”

Although Big Brother producers decided against broadcasting some of Mr. Biggin’s comments, during his exit interview with Big Brother,

    Big Brother said,

“On Monday you in a conversation with Katie, where she remarked that she was not in the house to represent the Jewish community, your comment was plainly capable of causing offense to Katie and the viewing public. Big Brother spoke to you about your language, when big brother pointed out to you that your language was capable of great offense you apologized and said that you understood the seriousness of the situation, but you’ve continued to use unacceptable language.

“In a conversation with Renee, you said, ‘I think the worst type, though, I’m afraid to say it, is the bisexuals’. You went on to say, ‘what it is, is, people not wanting to admit they’re gay.’

“Today in a conversation with Renee and others you again used unacceptable language regarding bisexuality. Talking about AIDS, you said, ‘I think it was a bisexual disease.’  You then went on to say, ‘there were a lot of bisexuals who went to those countries, had sex with those people and then brought it back to their own families in America, so that’s how it became such a worldwide disease.’”

“I have a lot of bisexual friends and I’m not in any way a bigoted person.

  • Brighton Pride goers prepare for rail misery and turmoil

As one of the busiest prides in the UK is set to take place this weekend, railway firm, Southern Rail issues journey warnings and long delays.

Hundreds of thousands of people attending Brighton Pride face travel turmoil as Southern Rail continues to grapple with industrial disputes and infrastructure issues.

The company recently announced it was cancelling 350 daily services.

Southern Rail which runs the service between London and Brighton released a statement to warn passengers of long delays and station closures during the Brighton Pride weekend and asked people to consider about alternative routes and journeys if they were planning to visit Brighton over this weekend.

The company said in a statement,

“Reduced train service will mean very busy trains.

“Preston Park station will be closed for the safety of passengers and staff.”

“There will be a reduced service over the weekend to and from Brighton meaning very busy trains.

“Given the large attendance expected at Pride, as usual there will be a queuing system in place at Brighton Station for return journeys – and the closure of Preston Park Station and the continuing engineering works at London Bridge mean that customers should expect long waiting times before they can board a train home.”

    Queuing System

The queuing system at Brighton station will be in place from 06:00, and customers will be allowed on to the platforms on a first-come-first served basis as space allows.

    Security precautions

The problems may further be compounded with added security features to protect pride goers over the weekend.

Sussex Police said that concrete barriers will be installed as security is stepped up after the terror events in Orlando in June and Nice in July – and all though the UK’s terror threat level is the same as last year – officers are taking no risks.

    Ch Supt Nev Kemp said,

“[But] most people are unlikely to notice any difference from previous years and none of the changes that we have made should affect the enjoyment of people involved.”

  • Drag mayhem on top of Snowdon

Drag mayhem on top of Snowdon

A cock in a frock on a rock… Drag queens are gearing up to scale Wales’ tallest mountain, Snowdon.

Next summer, a gaggle of drag queens are set to climb Mount Snowdon, one of the UK’s tallest mountains in aid of four charities.

    Organiser, Miss Roxy Ritz said,

“I was supporting one of my drag queen colleagues, Crystal Ball, who was performing at a local venue and went outside to get some fresh air.

I was speaking to one of the venue locals who mentioned that they lived in Wales near Snowdonia, which got me talking about Priscilla Queen of the Desert (don’t ask how!). After going back inside I did a little thinking and then it came to me… Queens of Snowdonia!”

“The idea of drag queens hiking up Snowdonia excited me, so for the next couple of days as I built on the idea, I asked a few people to see what they thought about it and, lo and behold, Queens of Snowdonia progressed from conception, so to speak.”

The challenge was accepted by Miss Jason, Betty Swollocks, Sissy Sucks and Stephanie Von Clitz and even Dave Lynn.

Miss Roxy Ritz wants to ultimately get a minimum of 20 drag queens to take part with the aim of raising £10,000 for the causes. You can find out more on their facebook page.

The four charities the queens aim to raise the cash for are: Macmillan Cancer Research, Terrence Higgins Trust, Cancer is a Drag and Sussex Beacon.

  • BOOK REVIEW | Straight Jacket: How To Be Gay And Happy, Matthew Todd

BOOK REVIEW | Straight Jacket: How To Be Gay And Happy, Matthew Todd

★★★★ | Straight Jacket: How to Be Gay and Happy

There’s a problem with gay men. There’s definitely a problem with gay men. We’re legal now with an equal age of consent. We can get married and adopt children, dance in the streets at Pride events and hold hands in Central London. We even pop-up on television dramas from time to time looking as far removed from the stereotypical 1970’s mincing queens as is possible. Yet, we have higher than average rates of mental illness, addiction and suicide; often struggle to maintain relationships and many are filled with corrosive self-hatred.

I’m a self confessed gay man with issues. Like a lot of people, gay or straight, I’ve cycled through a few addictions before reaching middle age. Prescription medications, a car-crash relationship with alcohol and a lot of not always fun casual sex were my main vices. I’ve suffered with depression and anxiety and am an expert at obsessive thinking who’s had a shed load of therapy.

When I heard about this book by Matthew Todd (the witty and wise ex Attitude editor and writer of the play Bells and Whistles) I embraced it with open arms. Luckily, it definitely hugged me back.

Todd certainly knows his stuff. He uses statistics, case studies, anecdotes and interviews to present his argument and it’s a compelling one. Intermingled with this is Todd’s own story and the book is part memoir, part discourse on the problems facing gay men in 21st century life. Todd grew up in 1970’s Croydon, escaped and lived to tell the tale.

He also struggled to rein his life in after becoming too dependent on alcohol to numb the pain of his darker thoughts.

Todd’s main premise is that our culture and society leads gay men to live with deep-seated feelings of shame and then offers wonky solutions such as casual sex and alcohol. He examines the ways this affects us and focuses on how having low self-esteem can lead to problems such as over-eating, gym addictions and drug abuse. His scope is wide ranging and it’s a fascinating read. This isn’t a dry tome and is never preachy but is compelling and readable with a perceptive gaze. It’s a warm and caring book but one that’s also disturbing.

There are frequent reminders too that it’s not all issues and problems. Lots of gay men are happy and healthy. We don’t all indulge in risky behaviour and walk around under black clouds. Some of us enjoy drugs and alcohol in moderation. There’s no disapproval or moralising here. Even if you’re one of the luckier ones and are beautifully balanced, it’s an enlightening study.

The final portion of the book loses focus and momentum a little but is still worth perusing. Overall this is an important book and is relevant, resonant and reassuring. I’d recommend this to every gay man or to everyone who knows one.
