From questions over Northern Ireland’s scheme to clear historic gay convictions to worrying figures about LGBTQ+ bullying in Irish schools, today’s news highlights some of the challenges still facing our community. Elsewhere, a basketball star has spoken out after receiving death threats for supporting trans athletes, while one of London’s best-known gay venues celebrates a new chapter.

1. Northern Ireland’s historic gay convictions scheme has received just three applications in eight years

A scheme designed to address historic convictions for consensual same-sex activity in Northern Ireland has yet to approve a single application since coming into force in 2018.

Only three people have applied to have their convictions disregarded, with none meeting the eligibility requirements.

The scheme covers certain offences that have since been abolished, including gross indecency. Eligible convictions must relate to consensual activity that would no longer constitute a criminal offence.

The Rainbow Project, a Northern Irish LGBTQ+ charity, has encouraged anyone eligible to consider applying, while recognising the emotional difficulties of revisiting historic convictions.

Northern Ireland’s Department of Justice is reviewing the scheme, with potential reforms expected to be considered after the next Assembly elections.

2. Nearly half of Irish students fear LGBTQ+ classmates would face bullying

New research has revealed that 48% of secondary school students in Ireland believe a classmate would experience bullying if they came out as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

The figure rises to 52% for students coming out as transgender.

The findings, published by LGBTQ+ youth charity Belong To, coincide with Stand Up Awareness Week, an annual campaign encouraging schools to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.

There were some positive findings, however. The proportion of students who believe their school provides a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ pupils has increased from 72% in 2023 to 76% in 2025.

This year’s campaign, You Belong Here, aims to encourage greater understanding, acceptance and inclusion in Irish schools.

Professional basketball player Gabby Williams has revealed that she received death threats after publicly supporting transgender athletes.

The Golden State Valkyries forward described experiencing security concerns following comments she made earlier this year in support of trans inclusion in sport.

Speaking during an end-of-season interview, Williams acknowledged that the backlash had been frightening but insisted she would continue advocating for transgender rights.

She also praised the support she received from her team’s fans, describing the basketball environment as a source of reassurance.

Williams has previously argued that athletes should use their platforms to challenge discrimination and support those who may struggle to make their voices heard.

4. Iconic London gay bar Two Brewers reopens following major refurbishment

One of London’s best-known LGBTQ+ venues has unveiled a new look following a six-figure refurbishment.

The Two Brewers in Clapham, which has been part of the capital’s gay scene since 1981, reopened on 14 October after a temporary closure.

The renovation includes a redesigned cabaret stage, improved seating, upgraded lighting and a dedicated nightclub space.

The venue’s exterior has also received a makeover, with a striking red frontage replacing its previous black appearance.

Owners Stonegate Group say the investment demonstrates their commitment to the venue and its longstanding role within London’s LGBTQ+ community.

The reopening offers some welcome positive news for Britain’s gay nightlife scene, which has faced significant challenges in recent years.
