  • Top 5 Vintage Gay TV Characters

Top 5 Vintage Gay TV Characters

Antony Simpson shares his Top 5 Vintage TV Characters. In order to make the list, characters had to be iconic, queer and in some way vintage. So here we go:

    5. Willow Rosenburg (Alyson Hannigan)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer first appeared on TV in 1997. Willow started off as a geeky, shy girl who fell in love with part-man part-werewolf Oz (Seth Green). When Oz decided he was too dangerous to be around and left Willow she slowly transformed into an UBER Witch. She met fellow Witch Tara (Amber Benson) and fell in love again, only for Tara to be murdered. I love Willow because of the transformation from shy girl to powerful independent woman.

    4. Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)

Captain Jack Harkness first appeared on our TV screens in 2005 in Doctor Who, before getting his own spin-off series Torchwood. Captain Jack is openly bisexual although all of his on screen relationships have been with men.

Now before you start commenting and telling me 2005 is hardly Vintage; Captain Jack is an immortal rogue Time Agent that has a timeline that dates back 1860s. So if that doesn’t make him vintage, I don’t know what will.

    3. Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver (Marcus D’Amico)

Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver appeared on TV in Tales of the City in 1993, which was based on the series of books with the same name. Michael is a gay man living in San Francisco in the late 70s and is a truly loveable character. If you’ve never seen Tales of the City, I can’t recommend the TV series’ and books enough.

    2. Mr Humphries (John Inman)

Are You Being Served? Originally appeared on TV in the 1970s through to the 1980s. Are You Being Served? Was a sit-com set in Grace Brothers’ Clothing Department that focused on the Sales Clerks. I remember seeing a re-run and instantly fell in love with the mincing Mr Humphries.

Camp humoured Mr Humphries was filled with innuendo always alluded to his sexuality, as did his famous catch phrase ‘I’m free!’ whenever a good looking gentleman entered the store. An iconic character, one of the first TV characters to allude to their gay sexuality.

    1.Edna Everage (Barry Humphries)

AB FAB (C) Fox Searchlight Pictures

Edna Everage debuted on stage in her native Australia before she appeared on our TV screens in the late 80s. This Melbourne Housewife is surrounded by fables, but is essentially a character created and played by Barry Humphries. Edna Everage self-proclaimed advisor to the stars and royalty I always think of as being the first mainstream comedian drag act. Her international status makes her number 1 on my list.

If there’s a TV character you feel should be on the list, comment on Facebook www.facebook.com/TheGayUK so that I can discover some new characters.

The former Doctor Who star was broadcasting live on Facebook when his husband Scott Gill walked into the view, holding nothing but towels – and for a couple of moments he appeared completely naked, and it turns out he’s not embarrassed by the exposure!

As Scott walked into view John said,

“Oh, Scott! Oh my God! You just… I’m live video! I can’t believe… everyone just saw you naked!”

At the time of streaming there were four thousand fans watching to which Scott replied

    “ooo blimey”

In a following stream, John said,

“I wondered what the fuss was all about, but yep, you saw it. Now you know why we big boys stick together. Scott accidentally bared it all on Facebook and online, so there you go world, now you’ve seen it.

“In no way are we embarrassed about what happened in the jacuzzi. The human form and the body, no matter what size you are, we should celebrate how we look and what we have.”

Later in the stream John encouraged Scott to jump up naked to show the fan his butt!

  • John Barrowman Leads Fury At Joan Rivers Oscar Snub

Stars and allies of the gay community tweeted their disgust at the apparent snub of Joan Rivers, who died last year at the age of 81.

    • John Barrowman slams Academy for failing to mention the late Joan Rivers in their In Memoriam segment.
    • Lance Bass and Margaret Cho amongst the LGBT community to tweet their anger at the apparent snub.
    • The Academy offers an explanation.

Joan Rivers who died at the age of 81 last year, was known for her stand-up comedy and her film roles, but she was also a staunch supporter of the LGBT community. She was omitted from the Oscars “In Memoriam” section.

Leading the outrage was Joan Rivers’ co-star on E! Kelly Osborne who tweeted, “Am I missing something or was @Joan_Rivers really left out of the #Oscars memorials?”

Margaret Cho was also disappointed that organisers had failed to mention the late comedian.

Openly gay, Torchwood actor, John Barrowman had a few words to say about the snub.

Newly wed former NSync singer Lance Bass also slammed the Oscars for the lack of Rivers.

    https://twitter.com/LanceBass/status/569709256598949888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.thegayuk.com%2F_snippet%2Fblog%2F4009928388%2F9431867%2F3sVUrUOzH0wDQCMzn9CZj01to-M.html

The Academy addressed the lack of Joan Rivers in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, an Oscar rep explained the decision to not include the iconic comedian. “Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year’s Oscar show,” reads the statement. “She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com.”

  • John Barrowman Gives Husband A Puppy

John Barrowman MBE, celebrity ambassador for the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, has sponsored an adorable cocker spaniel puppy called Merry as a gift for his husband, Scott, this Christmas.

John has supported the charity for many years, and recently went ‘deaf for the day’ to raise awareness of the challenges that deaf people encounter on a daily basis. Both John and Scott already have two dogs, a cocky Jack Russell called Captain Jack and an adorable Cocker Spaniel called Harris. John Barrowman commented:

“Scott and I love dogs. We’ve always had two or three in the family so when I had the opportunity to add one more to our brood, I couldn’t resist. I’ve sponsored a puppy called Merry for Scott this Christmas. Scott will get regular updates, lots of adorable photos, and the best part is that this Christmas present will be a gift that will change the life of a deaf person…

When I experienced going deaf for the day, I was anxious and isolated. When Merry grows up, she’ll not only help make a deaf person’s life safer, she’ll also bring them companionship. We’re going to have a very MERRY Christmas!”

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is now asking the public to sponsor an adorable puppy as a gift for a loved one this Christmas, and help change the life of a deaf person.

The public can also choose to sponsor John Barrowman’s puppy Merry, or Cockerpoo puppy Berry, from just £3 a month. Each supporter will receive a welcome pack which includes a certificate, gorgeous photos, and other exciting gifts, and sponsors donating £5 or more per month will also receive a cute and cuddly soft hearing dog toy.

To find out more about sponsoring a puppy through their training, visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk/puppy or call Hearing Dogs for Deaf People on 01844 348100.

  • The Big Commonwealth Gay Kiss – Barrowman Puckers Up

Amidst the Tartan and Scotties, Scotland had a surprise up her sleeve for the millions of viewers around the globe, who tuned in to watch the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.

Actor and singer John Barrowman grabbed a guy and gave a full on lip smacker during his stint in the opening ceremony. It is thought the kiss was done as a political statement. 40 of the 53 countries of the Commonwealth criminalise homosexuality.

Watch the moment John Barrowman kisses a guy in the crowd below.

The kiss mirrors a number of other same-sex kisses that have happened during a live TV broadcast. In 2012, the Eurovision showed two same-sex kisses and during the London Olympics opening ceremony, the first lesbian kiss ever on British television was replayed.

Barrowman met his husband Scott Gill in 1993 and entered into a civil partnership in December 2006. In 2013 the pair married in the state of California after the United States Supreme Court overturned Prop 8.

Speaker John Bercow MP said in a statement earlier this week that the Commonwealth ‘must to do more’ for the LGBT community. He said, ‘Sadly, there might be world-class athletes who will not be able to compete in the Games, as they will have been discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality; shamefully, it is estimated that 4 out of every 5 countries in the Commonwealth criminalise homosexuality. Surely, it is time for the Commonwealth to do more to support lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual people, to ensure they are not discriminated against, no matter where they live?’

  • Commonwealth gay kiss: “They should be burned alive”

In case you’ve been asleep for the last day or so, the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony took place last night. In amongst the usual song and dance of such an affair, something relatively insignificant happened: a person kissed someone.

This would usually go without comment, except for the fact it was two men; one of them being John Barrowman. I’m no massive fan of Barrowman’s attention-seeking antics, but even he does not deserve this delightful tweet from Twitter user @Looney_Ent: “This is disgusting, they should be burned alive. Commonwealth Games ceremony gay kiss #nohomo #nohomo #nohomo”

The Twitter community dove into action, reporting the offending tweet to Twitter and the Metropolitan Police. In the face of such backlash, and following warnings from the ever-delightful @FleetStreetFox, the homophobic tweet has been removed and replaced with a barbed apology.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t reach John Barrowman for comment.

  • John Barrowman’s success after being dropped by record label

John Barrowman recently released his Pledge Music fan-funded album You Raise Me Up. It reached #16 in the UK album charts, much better than his two of his previous studio albums with record label Sony.

Another Side (2007) Barrowman released with Sony BMG only managed to reach #22 in the UK album chart. Music Music Music (2008) also with Sony barely entered the UK album chart at #35. His album John Barrowman reached #11, but after this the record label dropped Barrowman. A fan at a convention in the US later asked Barrowman when his next album was coming out. He explained that it wasn’t and the young fan said: ‘We’ll fund it!’

Barrowman, when talking about You Raise Me Up said that he felt privileged to make the album and that: ‘I think this is the best album that I’ve ever, ever made.’

Despite dropping to #25 on the UK album charts this week, it seems that Barrowman is having more success with Pledge Music (a site that allows fans to pledge money to artists in exchange for a copy of the album, merchandise and meet and greet opportunities) than he was with the record label.

So does this mean that the Record Labels need to watch out?

  • John Barrowman Slams Happy Days Musical Producer Amy Anzel

Musical theatre producer Amy Anzel comes under heavy criticism after ‘gay’ comments on Channel 4’s Sound Of Musicals

Actress turned first-time producer Amy Anzel came under heavy criticism from Twitter users and industry professionals last night after the Channel 4 programme, Sound Of Musicals, aired comments from her towards an auditionee of her forthcoming production Happy Days – The Musical, about his sexuality.

Openly gay actor and TV Star John Barrowman Tweeted:

Holly S**t! Did Amy Anzul [sic] actually say that about Gay’s “I love my Gays, Strip away the Gay” #soundofmusicals jb

Amy Anzel, who is currently producing a musical based on the hit TV show Happy Days came under intense criticism after she asked a dancer to ‘Strip away the gay’ before asking the unnamed dancer whether he was, in fact, gay on national TV.

Actor Layton Williams who has starred in Billy Elliot and Thriller Live tweeted about Anzel’s comments saying:

“I love the gays, but can you lose the gay, you are gay aren’t you” – I think what she meant was… Can you butch it up!!!

Happy Days is about to embark on a 24 venue UK Tour and stars former Sugababe Heidi Range, Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman and Eurovision favourite Cheryl Baker.

The show also featured the openly gay impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who was producing a new version of the show Barnum. Mackintosh was listed 4th on the Independent on Sunday’s Pink List in 2006.
