  • Conservatives release “delusional” merch to celebrate getting Brexit done

Conservatives release “delusional” merch to celebrate getting Brexit done

In a move which has left many people on social media baffled, the Conservatives have released an official tea towel feature a picture of PM Boris Johnson with the slogan, “Got Brexit Done”, despite the fact that the UK doesn’t officially leave the EU until the 31st January 2020.

The move has left many on social media questioning whether the account had been hacked or was even a parody account.

    Proudly made in the UK

The tea towel, which is “proudly made in the UK” is selling on the Conservative’s website for £12.99 and apparently is the perfect way to “Show your pride in Britain and celebrate Brexit in your kitchen”.

Delivery of the towel won’t happen until the 10th Feb 2020.

Twitter users were quick to slam the product and the Conservatives as “delusional” while another added that they thought the tea-towel would be sold in car boot sales for 50p within a year.

Matthew Hodson commented, “I predict these will age like a fine yogurt.”

You could always team the tea towel with a mug, with the slogan “I got Brexit done” for £15.00.

In a poll by THEGAYUK in April 2016, 82 per cent of our readers thought that the UK was better off in the EU, while only 18 per cent thought that we would be better off out.

  • India Willoughby suggests that only this city should vote in a second referendum

India Willoughby suggests that only this city should vote in a second referendum

With Brexit rocking the nation and talks of a second referendum never far from the discussion Celebrity Big Brother star India Willoughby has suggested a solution.

With divisions running high on whether the UK should hold another Brexit referendum, the Celebrity Big Brother star India Willoughby thinks she has the answer to who should be able to vote.

Taking to Twitter the CBB star suggested that as London is the most cosmopolitan place in the UK and has the widest representation of people, it should decide on the future of the UK.

“London is the most cosmopolitan city in the world. It has representatives from North, South, East and West. A mix of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Why not just let London decide in a 2nd Referendum? Reflects all of us. We need a speedy resolution”.

In the 2016 EU referendum, London voted remain by almost 60 per cent. The highest remainer area outside Scotland, which voted Remain 62.0% to 38.0%

  • COMMENT | Should school leavers be made to go into National Service?

Putting something in before you take something out.

Sometimes seems that what is wrong with the UK is that so many have a right to take something out without having ever put anything in?

Post-Brexit there is predicted to be massive skills and staffing shortages.

Is National Service an answer? Not the National Service of our forefather but a different structure that includes the military, medical, fire and police services.

What impact would it have on unemployment if school leavers and those up the ages of finishing study were conscripted to serve 2 years for their country?

I was born after the abolition of National Service in 1960 and before the last man was de-mobbed in 1963. My childhood includes memories of a society where there was more respect for each other and for elders, where children knew their place, where there was gratitude for help and kindness shown.

The world feels a wholly different place today. I live in a country that feels to be losing its national identity and pride and where diversity and multicultural considerations are put before those of heritage.

  • LGBT Group Creates Out Of EU Campaign

LGBT Group Creates Out Of EU Campaign

An LGBT group has launched a campaign for Britain to leave the EU.

  • OPINION | Why the EU is important for the LGBT Community

With the rise of extremist parties in the UK and the challenges that face conventional political parties, one of the most contentious battles is over membership of the European Union. The United Kingdom became a member of the EU on the first of January 1973, and have since enjoyed the privileges of a single internal market, a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states and of course human rights.

But why is the EU so important to the LGBT community?

LGBT rights are protected under a range of EU treaties and laws that decriminalises homosexuality across all member states. But more than this under EU law there are provisions that combat discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, which have been legally binding across Europe since the 1990s. The EU had single-handedly managed to create a framework for equal treatment in employment and occupation for our community.

In practice, the law protects every person who identifies with the LGBT from being discriminated against in the work place. This includes refusal of a job, being dismissed and even harassment during work.

But this is not all the EU has done for our community. In 2009, Lithuania was a battleground of gay rights and abuse. The European Commission made it a point to tone down the homophobic language and abused used freely in the country and even went as far to support the gay pride parade under threat of banning.

Since then the Council of the European Union have created a binding guideline that instructs EU diplomats around the world to defend the rights of the LGBT community. This is a global effort on behalf of the EU to protect the rights we have fought so hard to gain.

The legalisation of same-sex marriage in the UK has also been strongly influenced by the EU. Although the EU does allow some level of discretion in the implementation of the EU wide laws, some countries have abused this discretion to prevent same sex marriage. However the views of the EU are clear. It can be seen through the case law of the EU Court of Justice that same sex partners must be treated the same as those who are married.

The EU has ensured that Europe is most progressive continent in the world for recognising LGBT rights. Legalising same sex activity, marriage and slowly the right for couples to adopt. As well as providing a frame work of anti discrimination laws in the work place and allowing gays to openly serve in the military.

There is no doubt that the EU has made the world a safer and more accepting place for us. If the UK were to remove its self from the EU then it would also remove all EU wide law that protects our rights. Although we would have domestic law that to some extent offers similar protection, membership to the EU provides safeguards that force even the government to protect our rights.

No matter your views or opinion on the EU, we can all agree that they have significantly contributed to the protection of our community and without their support, it is highly unlikely that we would have come as far as we have in the struggle for equality.
