TODAY IN GAY HISTORY: Men in Russia shave their beards in protest to Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision win

In 2014, Drag Queen Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest with her epic hit, “Rise Like A Phoenix” which prompted a backlash from some in Russia – despite Conchita not representing Russia in the competition or being a Russian national.

Unlike other drag queens, Conchita Wurst’s look involves a full beard, which proved a little too controversial for some.

Wurst, real name Tom Neuwirth, was the subject of much hate-mongering from online trolls in Russia, Armenia and Belarus. One top Russian politician even called the contest a ‘sodom show’ after the DQ’s appearance.

Numerous men in Russia started a hashtag on Twitter and other social networks called #ProveYoureNotConchita in which they displayed their freshly shave off beards in protest to Conchita’s win.

However, “Rise Like A Phoenix” did climb the iTunes chart to claim the Number 1 spot in the Russian iTunes’ chart despite the adverse reactions.

  • All Set For The Inaugural Icon Awards In Scotland As Conchita Flies In

The Scottish LGBTI community is set for the inaugural Icon Awards, set to hit Glasgow this October 9th. The awards aim to reward and celebrate the LGBTI community of Scotland with what’s being penned as the night of the year in the Scottish LGBTI calendar.

Scotland is leading the way in the race for equality and inclusion, with the passing of the gay marriage bill, and the recent accolade of being the most progressive country in Europe, but there is still a “long way to go” says event manager and organiser Michael Macfarlane.
    He added,

“The Icon Awards will be an inclusive event, inviting people from all over Scotland to come together and celebrate diversity. The awards will go to individuals, businesses and organisations that are going the extra mile, and are working towards equality for all.”

Eighteen categories span the full spectrum of the LGBTI community and their achievements.

Music legend Horse MacDonald also commented saying; “It is so important for the LGBTI community to identify with and have role models, when I was growing up there were so few people to look up to and aspire to. It’s the role models of today’s society who are challenged with helping people accept who they are, and in turn help the endless battle towards full equality for the LGBTI community across Scotland and the world” Horse added,

“A ceremony like this is long overdue in Scotland, and will help create new role models, and highlight areas that still have a long way to go like sport, as well as creating an inclusive event for all to come and enjoy”.

One Scottish sporting star who believes in the cause is former Glasgow 2014 team Scotland swimmer, and British LGBT sporting personality of the year finalist Martin Cremin.

Born in Dunblane, Martin was at the forefront of Scottish sport, now living in London he is still a firm supporter of the LGBTI sporting scene.

Conchita Wurst and Michelle Visage will be in attendance for the very first awards.

  • No Russian Parade for Conchita

An application for a parade to celebrate Eurovision winner Conchita has been declined by Moscow’s Mayoral Office.

Officials in Moscow have vetoed an application for a parade to honour the Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst.

Wurst won the 2014 competition with her song Rise Like A Phoenix with 290 points.

Speaking to Russian news agency interfax Alexei Mayorov, from the Moscow mayor’s office said, ‘We informed them that the event could not take place,’

The application was denied to, ‘respect morality in the education of the younger generation’.

Before the show aired last week, top Russian politician branded the show a ‘Sodom Show’.

The parade had been planned for May 27th, the 21st anniversary of legalising homosexuality in Russia.

The activists behind the application have said it will appeal the decision and have vowed to stage a gay pride on 31st May 2014, despite a 100 year ban of Gay Prides.

Many men in Russia have started to shave their beards off in protest of Conchita’s win, but Rise Like A Phoenix continues to chart high in the Russian iTunes chart.

  • OPINION | Rise Like A Mockingjay

Has Austria given the world a new symbol of hope? Like, I don’t know, Katniss Everdeen? I too felt like raising my three middle fingers in support of Conchita Wurst.

Like most of the world, I am sure you were in awe at Austria’s entry of the Eurovision Song Contest. It sent shivers as well as butterflies through one’s body. The powerful voice of Conchita filled our ears with delicious harmony, as well as lyrically astounding us.

There is one thing about her journey that struck me sideways. Despite criticism and idiocy from close-minded bigots, Conchita triggers thoughts of a familiar struggle that, at one point in every gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender’s life, they have gone through and therefore can relate to. For those Hunger Games fanatics and acquaintances, this struggle resonates Katniss’s turmoil when defending her own kind who had been, for seventy five years, ostracised, marginalised and made to live their lives as sacrificial, by the Capitol. The Capitol has a lot to answer for, as they do not want to change, in fact what they want to do is to boycott and silence these protests.

    Is that ringing any bells?

What were Russia, Belarus and Ukraine trying to do during the Eurovision week?

I will leave that rhetorical. As I can hear the pennies dropping in your minds.

Watching the Final was mesmerising and ethereal. I was expecting Conchita’s dress to turn in to ‘Flame’ and her nodding to, a Cinna like person, in the audience as confirmation of the rebellious movement. What really got me were the fire-like wings behind her, on the screen, as Conchita Wurst beautifully bursts in to the last Rise Like A Phoenix chorus.

The victory was not just about the song and the artist, but it was another triumph for LGBT community’s voice being heard and expressed. It makes me wonder if this same song was played five years ago, would it have had the same effect? Or was it the fact that the world’s views have strengthened in relation to LGBT rights?

2014 has been a year of so many firsts:
29th March: Gay Weddings, making it a live broadcast for all to see and celebrate with the happy couple. United Nations advances its stand on Gay Rights with Bollywood style music video depicting a welcoming of a homosexual couple to one’s family.
Conchita Wurst creates a storm within East Europe and the World with her sheer confidence and ambition. Where to end? This is the beginning.

As many countries such as Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, have views that are eerily intensifying, there is a pleasing air of acceptance around the communities in the Western Culture where it feels okay to hold a hand or kiss someone of the same sex, or even to tell your Mum or Dad who you really are.

Thank you Conchita Wurst for the emancipation of LGBT presence. We all raise our three fingers to you.

    Keep that Bird Rising!

Conchita Wurst’s win at the 2014 Eurovision has achieved more than just a thumbs up for the LGBT+ community across Europe, it has also encouraged some Russian men to shave off their beards… in protest.

Conchita’s victory has spurred on some men across Russia to shave off their beards in a backlash against the drag queen’s victory. Conchita’s song Rise Like A Phoenix amassed an impressive 290 points in the 59th Eurovision Competition.

Wurst, real name Tom Neuwirth, has been the subject of much hate mongering from a few people Russia, Armenia and Belarus. One top Russian politician even called the contest a ‘sodom show’.

Since the DQ’s win some Russian men have taken to social media to show their distain of the victory – by shaving off their beards in protest and using a hashtag.

Huffington Post show 3 examples of these men – some using the hashtag Prove You’re Not Conchita.

Valentin’s video from Instagram has also apparently been shown on Italian News.

  • Eurovision Drag Queen Faces Backlash From Russia

Austria’s entry into the 2014 Eurovision faces a massive backlash ahead of her performance in the world’s biggest music competition.

Anti-gay petitioners in Russia, Armenia and Belarus have called for Conchita Wurst (real name Tom Neuwirth) to be banned or edited out of the televised event, which will be broadcast across Europe.

The bearded drag queen is already in the top 10 of favourites to win, with her song ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’.

Last year Turkish National broadcaster TRT was rumoured to have cancelled their broadcast of the 2013 Eurovision because of a lesbian kiss between two women in Finland’s entry Marry Me. There were in fact two gay kisses in the 2013 show.

The last time Austria won the Eurovision competition was in 1966, with Udo Jürgens, who sung Merci Chérie.

According to sources the petition reads:

‘Austria will be represented in the Eurovision 2014 by the transvestite contestant Conchita Wurst who leads the lifestyle inapplicable for the Russians. The popular international competition that our children will be watching has become a hotbed of sodomy at the initiation of the European liberals. Russia is one of the only European countries that has managed to maintain normal and healthy family values based on love and mutual support between MEN and WOMEN. That is why we are against the Eurovision 2014 to be broadcast in Russia…’
