  • Battle Of The Divas, Madonna Goes Head To Head With Gaga

The music the world’s two biggest music divas both released new videos this week.

MADONNA with her dizzy frenetic mayhem in ‘Bitch I’m Madonna,’ and then LADY GAGA sitting at on overgrown floral strewn piano at the 2015 European Games Opening Ceremony held in Baku, Azerbaijan plaintively singing her version of John Lennon’s classic ‘Imagine’.

Madonna has racked up 3 million hits already, whilst Gaga’s video has been watched just under a million times.

They couldn’t be anymore different if they tried.

We know which one we love …. but which one do you prefer.

  • And Madonna Tries Her Hand At Stand-Up

God loves a trier and Madonna is certainly that.

Looking sensational, gay icon, Madonna tried her hand at stand-up comedy on The Tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon.

The Ray Of Light singer had the show’s in-house band in stitches but failed to really get the audience behind her. The stint which saw Madonna talk about her love of younger men comes after recently admitting to Jonathan Ross that she would like to try stand-up comedy. At one point she jokes about asking her son Rocco if he had any school friends she could date.

At the end of routine, she asks Fallon, if she “has a future” in comedy – we’ll let you be the judge.

  • Can Still Strike A Pose 25 Years On From Iconic Vogue

To mark the 25th Anniversary of Madonna’s iconic music video for ‘Vogue’ dancer/choreographers Jose Xtravaganza and Salim “Slam” Gauwloos have performed a short stunning tribute.

Jose along with Luis Xtravaganza, introduced Madonna to the Harlem House Ball community, inspiring her to write the iconic song and incorporate the then underground dance style into the music video for the song.

The song became a massive hit world-wide for Madonna in 1990. It reached the number 1 slot in numerous countries including the UK and USA selling over 3 million copies world-wide. The video for Vogue was ranked #2 on MTV’s greatest videos ever made.

  • What Do The Gays Think About Madonna?

It goes without saying that Madonna has a large gay following and sometimes as a gay man it’s expected that you have your membership card all paid-up and subscribed…

Madonna’s been entertaining the masses for decades, reinventing herself, releasing hit after hit and much of her success has been won by exciting one of music’s three big marketing “Gs” – The Gays. The others in case you’re wondering are: the Golden Oldies and the Girls. She’s been a strong ally in the fight for equal rights for the LGBT community and she’s been a leader in pushing gender boundaries for years. Leading US magazine Advocate claim that she is the greatest gay icon. But she has also been criticised by the gay community. Notably, she upset many when she called Kale, yes the green leafy veg, gay.

However, we asked our readers what they thought about the Vogue superstar now and the answers were slightly surprising.

The responses were 50/50 positive / negative. So has Madge lost her touch with the gay community? Or aren’t we the stereotypes that everyone expects us to be?

  • COMMENT | Radio One Did What To Madonna? Are We Living In An Ageist Society?

As eternal gay icon Madonna prepares to launch her new album Rebel Heart, she’s on a promotional trail that includes interviews and performances at events such as the Grammy’s and the upcoming BRIT Awards. I’m looking forward to the new album and will no doubt mince along to the shops to buy it when it’s out, but I’m also finding myself becoming increasingly annoyed that it seems to be en vogue to hold ageist attitudes about Madonna.

The great lady probably doesn’t care that people are being ageist towards her (B**ch, she’s Madonna), but from my point of view, it’s quite disgusting. I haven’t managed to watch Madonna’s recent Grammy’s performance, but when looking on Facebook I saw lots of statuses and comments about Madonna needing to ‘put it away’ and act her age. To be honest I’m not really sure how a 56-year-old should be acting. Surely as long as Madonna is happy and not doing any harm, she can behave however she wants to. In fact, I applaud Madonna for being so carefree and doing what she wants. I hope I’m just as ballsy when I reach 56.

The latest act of ageism comes in the form of a story from the Daily Mail that Radio 1 has banned Madonna songs from their station. Radio 1 has since denied the accusations, stating that they individual songs on their merit and relevance to the station’s target audience. The Radio 1 spokesperson also stated that they do include older artists on their playlist and gave Paul McCartney currently being featured as an example.

While I understand the statement that Radio 1 made, I would like to ask them whether they can give an example of an older female who is currently on their playlist or has been in recent times. I can’t think of any and the Paul McCartney example is pretty much void as he is only on the playlist because he features on a Rihanna song. If Paul McCartney was releasing a song that only he features on, I don’t think he would even be considered for the Radio 1 playlist.

Although the Radio One refutes the Daily Mail story, it does raise questions about the prevalence of ageism and sexism. Ageism remains a big issue in society and is often coupled with sexism when you consider a number of women who are mocked for ‘looking old’ or not ‘acting their age’. I can’t think of any males who face the same treatment.

When it comes to Madonna being a victim of ageism, I doubt she cares, but I think Shirley Manson from Garbage summed it up best when she said the following in a 2012 interview with Bullet Media:

“The tabloids complain about Madonna looking old, and people laugh at her for that. Then Madonna goes and fixes her face, and they laugh at her for that. Even though they begrudgingly say she looks amazing, they’ll still laugh at her for trying to look young. Then she steps out, looking amazing, and the tabloids go and blow up a picture of her aging hand. Nobody’s doing that to George Clooney, blowing up pictures of his hands! I look at these magazines, and I want to say to them, ‘What’s your point? That she’s aged? Does that surprise you? Or is your ‘point’ an attempt to undercut what she’s achieved?’ I think it is, even if it’s on a subconscious level. … And you probably wouldn’t turn down those hands if they were grabbing you under the table, you f**king idiots!”

  • Madonna Releases New Material

Madonna has given her fans an early Christmas present, by releasing six tracks from her Rebel Heart album on iTunes and the chance to pre-order her new album, Rebel Heart, which is due for release in March 2015. The six tracks are Living for Love, Devil Pray, Ghosttown, Unapologetic Bitch, Illuminati and Bitch I’m Madonna which was recorded with Nicki Minaj.

Madonna has been teasing fans for some time on social media with the hashtag #unapologeticbitch and has been posting photos of her in the studio on her Instagram account. The new studio album includes work with Diplo, Kanye West and Bilboard.

The official release comes after unfinished versions of some of the tracks from the new album were leaked online. According to Madonna’s official website, she stated “I was hoping to release my new single ‘Living For Love’ on Valentine’s Day with the rest of the album coming in the Spring. I would prefer my fans to hear completed versions of some of the songs instead of the incomplete tracks that are circulating. Please consider these six songs as an early Christmas gift,”

Madonna has also promised to release additional music on 9th February 2015 and the full album is due for release in the first week of March 2015.

According to www.madonna.com “the six songs are currently available for purchase now via pre-order at iTunes and other music outlets with purchase of the album. The music will also be available on all streaming services”.

The track listing for the album suggests that it will have 19 tracks and gives away that one of the other tracks is called “Joan of Arc”.

  • Madonna and the gay KaleGate

Madonna has upset some gay fans after calling Kale and Vladimir Putin Gay in a word association game for Buzzfeed.

The Material Girl singer, 55, has upset many gay fans after she called Kale gay in a word association game for Buzzfeed.

She also used the word to describe the Russian President Vladimir Putin during the game.

Many fans were quick to pick up on Madonna’s use of the word in a negative context.

One user said: ‘Really Madge, ‘gay’? Cos its totes appropriate to use it as a slur. *holds sarcasm sign*’ Whilst another said:

‘Finally, photos where she seems to be accepting that she’s in her 50’s rather than her 20’s. Much classier. Only complaint: calling kale ‘gay’. Is that supposed to mean it’s bad or saying that only homosexuals enjoy it…? I can get behind her calling Putin gay, he’s so vehemently anti-gay that it would make sense.’

Madonna has long been recognised for her gay rights advocacy, but this isn’t the first time she caused upset amongst fans for offensive language.

Earlier this year the singer appologised after using a racial slur on Instagram to caption a picture of herself and son Rocco.

‘I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram,” she said. “It was not meant as a racial slur … I am not a racist.’

  • OPINION: Why We Should Focus on Real Issues, Not Gossip and Bandwagons

Something has been building up inside me recently and it came to a head this week. The moment that Tom Daley made the revelation that he is in a relationship with another man I could foresee that the press and gossips would go into overdrive.

That’s exactly what has happened and it doesn’t half bug me.

Tom Daley coming out has been splashed over the front pages of trash rag tabloids this week and was even breaking news on the BBC and Sky news channels. I don’t see why as it is not actually news. It’s simply gossip. Now of course I applaud Tom for having the courage to come out in his own time and on his own terms. Although sad that he had to reveal his relationship status at all, there’s no doubt that his words will help other young people who are thinking about coming out. But again I come back to the reason why it is headline news. With so much other stuff going on in the world that should be featured on the news, why was a 19 year old lad revealing he is in a relationship with another man the headline story?

The sad fact is that gossip sells. It sells papers to those who are taken in by tabloid trash and it also keeps people watching television shows. Personally, I couldn’t care less about who Tom Daley is dating. I’m more concerned about the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines, the people injured in the Glasgow helicopter crash, the many homeless people facing cold, lonely nights in the lead up to Christmas, and important global issues such as climate change.

In the wake of Tom Daley’s ‘news’ I was asked to take part in a BBC radio discussion about it. Whenever something gay is in the news the BBC roll me out to talk about it. I agreed because I thought it would be a great opportunity to tell thousands of people that it is not a newsworthy story and we should be more concerned about other things. Also taking part in the discussion was a Baptist minister who agreed that it is not newsworthy. However, his reason for that view is because he believes a relationship should be between one man and one woman. I began to switch off when he started talking about the Bible and why we should all follow its teachings. Normally I’d challenge such opinions but on this occasion decided to ignore the bigot and focus on my message. Luckily I managed to convey that Tom Daley’s relationship status should not be on the news, but I felt that perhaps it was falling on some deaf ears.

As I put my face in the palms of my hands we were then fed the revelation that Tom is apparently dating someone who is twenty years older than himself. This is something else I could not care less about and it baffles me why anyone else would be interested. The shock, some genuine and some feigned, is absurd and I do not know what all the fuss is about. I’m in a relationship with someone who is twenty five years older than me. All I can say is don’t judge and don’t knock it until you have tried. This is such a non-story and I wish that people cared as much about genuine news as they do about this tittle tattle.

Something else that has bugged me in recent weeks is the James Arthur bashing. Everyone seems to be jumping on that bandwagon, but it’s something I refuse to be a part of. While I don’t condone James calling someone a “f**king queer”, I do accept that we all make mistakes. I don’t believe that James Arthur is a homophobe. A gobby fool, maybe, but he’s no homophobe. I just think that he did not think about what he was saying; he engaged his mouth before his brain. What has followed since then has been nothing short of a witch hunt. Comments in the media and on sites such as Twitter and Facebook have been ridiculous. As far as I am concerned James Arthur has apologised and that should be accepted.

It’s sad when people jump on bandwagons, sometimes without actually analysing all of the facts. It’s all too easy to do, but there are bigger things that we should be concerned about.

Instead of being taken in by gossip and jumping on bandwagons because it’s the in thing to do, we should be highlighting real news and causes. The totally abhorrent situation in Russia is something we must continue to highlight and it needs to be shown in the media more. Instead of writing about Tom Daley they should be bringing attention to the human rights struggles going on in the world at the moment.

An example is when Madonna took to the stage in a Scout’s uniform to protest against gay people being banned from being in the Scouts, the media twisted the story to make it about Madonna looking ridiculous instead of highlighting the reason why she dressed like that. It’s something that I find incredibly frustrating and it needs to change.

How are we going to make real progress and bring about huge social changes if we continue to be taken in by gossip and bandwagons? It’s clear that the media need to change, but actually, we as a society need to as well.

  • 5 Reasons Why Madonna’s Justify My Love Video Is a Masterpiece

5 Reasons Why Madonna’s Justify My Love Video Is a Masterpiece

Madonna is often knocked these days. Whether it’s for having younger boyfriends (good for her, I say), adopting African children, or dressing ‘inappropriately’, Madonna is frequently ridiculed.

Even when making a statement such as dressing up as a boy scout in opposition to the Scouts in America not allowing gay people to join, Madonna was slated and told to dress her age. The whole point of what she was doing was missed. It’s frustrating, but I doubt Madonna cares. I have always admired her for doing things on her own terms and having a don’t give a f**k attitude.

Over the years I have accumulated many favourite Madonna moments. Whether it’s snogging with Britney, supporting gay people and Pussy Riot when in Russia, putting on a triumphant performance in Evita (she should have won an Oscar for that), or refusing to grow old gracefully, I adore the woman. But my absolute favourite Madonna moment is her video for “Justify My Love”. It is a masterpiece. I’ll tell you why.

    1. Sex

Human sexuality and the act of sex fascinate me, so it’s great to see various facets of that in the video. Sex is a natural human behaviour and I enjoy seeing it portrayed in artistic glory. It’s not done in a trashy, sluttish way the likes of Rihanna would put in their music videos. It’s shot in an artistic way. It’s filmed in black and white, features the art of tease, and plays with varying genders and sexualities. It does not feature women bouncing their bottoms and boobs about like so many music videos do in these modern times. Those young girls who are in the charts today can learn a lot from Madonna and should explore her back catalogue of excellence.

    2. Gender Bending

Men dressed as women and ladies dressed as fellas. I like it. I like it a lot. Especially as it’s not done in a way that exploits cross-dressing and makes those who partake in it look like freaks. Again it is a natural part of being a human. Self-expression should be treasured and that extends to people having the right to dress in any way they choose. It’s a positive portrayal of something that still largely remains behind closed doors.

    3. Gay and lesbian romping

In the early 1990s. In a music video. I cannot think of another music video from a mainstream artist that features such a thing. Madonna was a trailblazer. I can only commend her for that.

    4. Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another .

That’s right. Unless of course, someone wants to be submissive and allow another person to dominate them. Which is ok of course. Human sexuality can be so fluid and rarely stays within the confines of what is perceived to be the norm. We all have our kinks and things that do it for us. I simply love that quote from the song and how the whole sub/dom topic is covered in the video. It’s a breath of fresh air.

    5. The dancer covered in black paint.

He is a bizarre addition to proceedings but at the same time is utterly fabulous. He has me captivated as he winds his body into all sorts of shapes. I can only dream of moving like that.

So there we have it; five reasons why Madonna’s Justify My Love video is a masterpiece. It’s five minutes of artistic brilliance. I cannot think of a video before or since that covers such a topic in a positive and empowering way. The act of sex in its various forms, cross-dressing and fluid sexuality tend to kept behind closed doors. I feel we are quite prudish in this country at times. Personally, I am quite open and talk about sex with great ease. There’s is nothing that fazes me. Perhaps my past working in sexual health has made me more open. Or perhaps I’m just filth. Either way, I applaud Madonna and thank her for the gift of “Justify My Love”.
