LGBT activism group ACT UP changes “traumatic” AIDs posters

If you’ve been around Soho or South London recently you may have seen a  multi-colour poster which states “I’m Too Sexy To Have AIDs”, activist group, ACT UP LONDON have defaced the posters to read something different.

    (SUPPLIED BY ACT UP)

Members of ACT UP LONDON have taken it upon themselves to change bill-posters designed by the late David McDiarmid and exhibited by Studio Voltaire because of the emotional trauma they may cause some people. The poster, is a multicoloured artwork which reads, I’m Too Sexy To Have AIDs”. According to Studio Voltaire, McDiarmid “produced these works in response to his own, and his community’s, experience of the AIDS crisis, and the multiple forms of devastations it manifests –political, emotional, intellectual and medical”.

McDiarmid died in 1995 from complications brought on by AIDs.

However some members of ACT UP LONDON have taken to defacing some of the posters because the message “isn’t helpful to the battles people living with HIV fight today”.

Cé from ACT UP LONDON explained, “Firstly, I would like to say that the main thrust of the action was never intended to censor the artist or to silence queer voices. Expanding on this, it’s important to point out that although the artwork may have been targeted at those that understand where this it comes from and why it exists, in its current state it is used out of context and isn’t helpful to the battles PLHIV fight today. The use of this piece of art taken so out of context not only takes us backwards in a fight that we are already struggling to win, but it also contributes to the stigma surrounding HIV. On the back of this it has the potential to be traumatic for those living with HIV, particularly for those with new diagnoses and especially for those who don’t have sufficient support networks to speak through the emotions conjured by the text in the artwork.”

    (SUPPLIED BY ACT UP)

Dani Singer from ACT UP LONDON said “We are incredibly supportive of Studio Voltaire and their decision to curate an exhibition of David McDiarmid’s work – as the second silence of HIV rages on, the more voices speaking out representing those affected by HIV and AIDS, the better. We see this action as a collaboration between ACT UP London and McDiarmid, in keeping with the strong tradition of ACT UP working with radical Queer artists throughout its existence to widen its message of ending the HIV pandemic, stigma, and pharmaceutical greed.

In a statement to THEGAYUK.com ACT UP London said, that the exhibition was counterproductive, with no supporting literature or context.

Explaining the works, Studio Voltaire explains on their website that they are displaying, “series of public works” which will be shown intermittently across sites in Clapham and Brixton, in partnership with This is Clapham and Art on the Underground. Studio Voltaire say that they will over the course of a year, publish artworks at various locations including neighbouring LGBTQ+ venue Two Brewers, the façade of Studio Voltaire, Brixton Underground station, and other temporary locations.

David McDiarmid (1952–1995) was an Australian artist, designer and activist, recognised for his prominent and sustained artistic engagement in issues relating to LGBT+ identity and history. Rainbow Aphorisms are a series of printed multiples, produced from 1993 until the artist’s death in 1995 of AIDS–related illnesses. McDiarmid produced these works in response to his own, and his community’s, experience of the AIDS crisis, and the multiple forms of devastations it manifests –political, emotional, intellectual and medical.

Siobhan Fahey from Rebel Dykes Film said, “The poster I’m Too Sexy to Have AIDS worried me, and I took my concerns to the gallery. When David was making art, in the 1990s, ironic art was much in vogue. It was powerful. But in today’s climate, with Trump and Brexit, we are almost post-irony. Statements like this need careful contextualisation. I support the aim of ACT-UP in repurposing these posters in a way I am sure that David McDiarmid would approve.”

  • Who is Milo Yiannopoulos?

    Who is Milo Yiannopoulos?

The controversial speaker who has made a fortune from campus tours, writing and speaking out against political correctness. So what do we know about Milo Yiannopoulos?

    (C) PR Supplied

Speaker Milo Yiannopoulos was born in the UK in a small town near Kent and attended the University of Manchester but dropped out. He also attended the Wolfson College in Cambridge but dropped out of that too.

    Tours, Book deals and writing

Since the mid-2010’s Milo has embarked on numerous speaking tours of the US, addressing, as he sees it the liberal left and political correctness. He was employed by the right-wing news outlet, Breitbart until he left following comments he made about child abuse. His major campus tour, The Dangerous Faggot Tour was met with protests and boycotts. A speech he was due to make at a British school was cancelled after the Department for Education warned against the talk.

In 2016 he announced that he signed a major book deal with an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The deal was reportedly worth $250,000. The book, Dangerous, was later dropped by the publisher but released on his own label, become a best seller in the US.

    Is Milo Yiannopoulos gay?

    Yes but maybe no?

Somewhat controversially Milo has said that he “chose” to be gay.

In a column for Breitbart the 6-foot journalist and commentator also claimed that he “chose to be gay” when he was 15 where he lost his ”virginity in a fivesome with two boys and two girls.”

He said that he “only plumped for homosexuality to irritate my parents”.

In 2015 the journalist claimed he would “cure” his homosexuality if he could. According to Raw Story, Yiannopoulos said, “If I could choose, I wouldn’t be a homosexual. That doesn’t make me self-loathing.”

He also doesn’t consider there to a debate surrounding the idea that you are born gay. He told THEGAYUK.com, “I thought the only people who believe in 100% nurture are the poor fools who think a man can suddenly decide he is a woman”.

    Alt-right?

Although he often associated with the alt-right political movement, Milo has stated that he does not identify as an alt-right speaker and has demanded public apologies from news outlets who have incorrectly identified him. He told THEGAYUK.com that “It’s a baseless lie. The alt-right went from being a group with wide-ranging views to an ever-narrowing clutch of politically inconsequential losers. They hate my guts and they’re far too faggy for me”.

Politically speaking Milo says he’s “cultural libertarian“.

Milo regularly speaks out against feminism, social justice, Islam and political correctness.

    Is Milo married?

Yes, indeed Milo got married  to a man, known only as John in 2017. Upon marrying John, Milo claimed he was the worst racist ever, this because John is a person of colour.

    Outspoken?

Milo’s takes on various subjects has made him a love or hate personality. However, he has attracted the ire of some social media platforms. In 2016 he was banned by Twitter after they determined that he had abused another member of the community. That hasn’t stopped him from amassing huge numbers of fans on Facebook and Instagram. Currently, his Facebook page has over 2,300,000 million fans and his Instagram has nearly 380,000 fans.

  • Surprising places where it’s legal to be gay

Surprising places where it’s legal to be gay

Across the globe, there are over 70 countries where being gay or having sex with someone of the same sex is illegal. There are a few places where you might expect same-sex relationships to be against the law. Nevertheless, we’ve found a few surprising exceptions.

Many of the world’s anti-gay countries tend to be in Arabic regions, eastern Asia and central Africa, however, we’ve found some surprises in and amongst the homophobic countries where it’s legal to have a same-sex relationship. Although homosexuality may be legal in these nations it mustn’t be inferred that LGBT+ people do not face discrimination due to their sexuality or gender expression.

    Iraq

    ErikaWittlieb / Pixabay

Despite being in the centre of one of the most homophobic and anti-gay regions of the world, it’s not illegal to be gay in the majority of Iraq. Same-sex relationships became legal in 2003. However, it is worth noting that despite the legality of sexual intercourse between men it was illegal in areas controlled by ISIS between 2014 – 2017. There were many reports of executions of gay men, or men thought to be gay by ISIS fighters during 2015 and 2016.

LGBT+  people are subject to widespread discrimination and have no legal recognition of their relationships and are banned from serving in the military.

Homosexuality was not always illegal in Iraq during the Ancient Mesopotamia times (3500 BC) the Šumma ālu, an Akkadian tablet, includes this code, where it regarded male homosexuality positively, even stating,

“If a man copulates with his equal from the rear, he becomes the leader among his peers and brothers”

Nevertheless, when the land came under British administration, the country was given a ban on sodomy.

  • CAR REVIEW | Abarth 695C Rivale

CAR REVIEW | Abarth 695C Rivale

     ★★★★☆ | Abarth 695C Rivale

Carlo and Carlo Called, They’ve Made A Car For You.

    What Have We Got?

Abarth has been giving us magical Fiat 500’s for over 10 years now and you wonder how, a car that is over a decade old, can still be relevant in the ever-changing A-segment city car section.

The answer is to make it good in the first place. Once you’ve done that, the development and evolutions can be kept to a minimum.

The Rivale has come about by joining Carlos Abarth, he who took small Fiats and made them fast, and Carlos Riva, he who made special boats, together to make one special city car with an eye-watering price to match.

    Driving

Oh my word, where do you start. For a car with older underpinnings, it manages to do two things. Puts the power down and still be entertaining to drive. And it is.

There is an abundance of torque steer and when it gets charging, it is a fighter. If it was there all the time, it would tire you out. Thankfully, in commuter mode, it is easy to live with. Put your foot down and… (screams)

And you are fighting with the steering wheel while trying to keep it in a straight line and all this with the roof open and the engine barking and snarling.

    Inside

Abarth UK opted for the standard carbon fibre trim. I don’t like it. The mahogany option is a better option and more in keeping with Riva’s ethos of something special. It’s a big piece of wood.

The rest is pretty much standard 500 except for the blue leather trim and the numbered plaque screwed into the trim by the handbrake. What that lacks in finesse for a special car costing over £25k, it makes up for by being quite endearing.

Sadly what hasn’t been altered is the infotainment system. For a car that is a decade old, this really is showing signs of age.

    Living With It

Millions of 500s have been sold. As a city car, these are just perfect. The boot is small and in the C model, even smaller. You learn to live with the small box in the rear. Likewise, you live with the torque steer fight you have when you stomp your foot on the loud pedal.

You put up with a lot in the 695 C Rivale and yet you never think you wished you’d bought something else. Very few cars these days are as engaging to drive as they are to look at on the drive and this still has it.

    The Verdict

It is ridiculously expensive. There are other Fiat and Abarth models with no roof for considerably less and if I’m blunt almost as much fun.

Sometimes fun just isn’t enough. Sometimes fun is just a drive to the shops with Graham Norton on the radio. What we have here then is a howling mixture of fun ramped up to the max that really is barking mad and there just isn’t much in this segment that can match it for thrills and spills.

And with the roof open, everyone around you will hear you laughing (or screaming) before they see the car and you can’t really put a price on that.

The attack in Wood Green happened on the 4th October at around 4:30 AM. Haringey police were called to Station Road near the junction with High Road, N22, where three men aged in their 20s had been assaulted by two suspects, according to a police report.

  • Former gay porn star dies,21

    Former gay porn star dies,21

A former gay porn star has died at the age of 21.

Kyle Dean, a model for the Corbin Fisher and GayHoopla studios has died at the age of 21. He had appeared in over dozens of films for the studios during his time acting as a porn star.

The cause of his death has not been determined however his death has been recorded by the Florida funeral home, Toale Brothers.

On the 30th September a tweet allegedly sent by Dean’s roommate, Jefry pleaded to fan to help out with funeral costs saying, “you guys may know, in the early hours on [sic] yesterday (name real name removed) sadly passed away in a struggle to survive I’ve spent the last days mourning and trying to gather up fees for his funeral. Please donate as much as you can”

Some of the comments under the Tweet have suggested that the call for funds was a scam by someone who has access to the star’s Twitter account.  The link on the GoFundMe site is no longer active.

Dean died on the 28th September. His death could not be confirmed by sources as tweets sent on Dean’s account gave the impression that he was still alive.

His obituary reads (identifying information redacted), “He loved to play football and physically train his body.

(He) is survived by his parents, his half-siblings. He also leaves his grandparents. A “Celebration of Life” ceremony is being handled at the Toale Brothers Funeral Home”.

However, his death has now been confirmed by Str8UpGayPorn.com.

Aside from his appearances in porn Dean had been arrested numerous times on drug and burglary charges.
