  • INTERVIEW | 8 BIT, The Man Who Discovered Lady Gaga

If I said the name Rob Fusari, most people might not know who that was, but he has worked with some of the biggest names in the music world (Beyonce, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston) behind some of the biggest hits (Destiny’s Child’s No No No and Bootylicious, Whitney Houston’s Love That Man, Will Smith’s Wild Wild West and Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi) and is the man credited with discovering shy and retiring pop star Lady Gaga.

Now going by the name 8Bit we had a little chat over the phone about the current music scene, the past music scene, Macy Gray, what he is up-to and what it was like to discover, work and fall out with Lady Gaga.

Hey 8, Can you give us a little bio about yourself?
Been making music for 15 yrs now, started as producer, songwriter, my first cut was with a group called Destiny’s Child, my first song I ever had published and recorded was No No No and that got to No.1

That’s a pretty amazing thing to happen for your first ever attempt, that obviously laid out your path for the next 15 years, but what made you take the leap from behind the scenes to in front of the cameras?
I guess the whole transition happened after Gaga in 2006/07, I did a bunch of songs for her 1st album, it was a blessing and a curse, it was definitely a pinnacle for me as a producer & song writer and as someone who developed artists. I had a lot of people all over the world reaching out to me looking for development who wanted to be the “next big thing” and I looked at a lot of artists but nobody really came to me and said “superstar” I didn’t get that feeling that I got with Gaga after meeting her for the first time.

So I went a good solid 2 years maybe more in this kind of limbo stage of where I was supposed to be with this, I was losing sense of the music, I wasn’t inspired, and one day I woke up and just thought I gotta do music just for the sake of doing music, I just need one day to myself. So I wrote a song, I sang it and it just hit me and the clouds had lifted, I could feel the music again and that moment I just knew, I was the artist I was looking for, It head me over the head like a tonne of bricks and it just kinda grew from there. I wanted to incorporate my sense of fashion with my sense of 80’s music, Depeche Mode, Bowie kind of thing.

I started playing a lot of shows, people were digging it and it turned into a bit more of a dance, EDM, pop kind of thing and it just keeps building and morphing from there.

Well, I was gonna ask you what your influences where for your sound, because it’s quite kind of rock, dance, glam and theatrical isn’t it?
Theatrical yeah and yeah that’s the right way to describe, I guess part of it came from growing up with a mother who was very glamorous, who was very Hollywood, she would take me to these shows, her home was decorated in a very Liberace way and she lived this glamorous, glamorous life, so I guess it has trickled down to me, and that’s kinda spilled over into the shows.

You don’t really get that style of music in pop anymore, it’s more sexual, it’s kind of nice to see that come back a little bit!
Totally, and part of that is what inspired me to take this role on, I was doing a session in New York about 2 years back and someone came in and we were talking, he said this one line and it hit me so hard, he goes “back when New York had a pulse” I went “Oh Shit.”

So New York is dead! (laughs) Do you really think that’s true?
I think from certain standpoints, creatively, music speaking it’s pretty dry, it’s all the same, it’s all very hipster, a lot of it feels similar and that’s not what New York ever was. You had your Rock on the Lower East Side, you had Studio 54 and all these different musical cultures.

America seems to really have caught onto the EDM trend, you seem to have finally caught up with dance music, is that a good thing?
I mean yeah, we’re just following you guys now (laughs) we follow now (laughs) but there (UK) everything is the same not many chances are taken, it’s like the record labels out here, they run, crunch the numbers and that’s it now. How many shows, how much did you sell, it’s a business now.

Speaking of shows, I hear you’re touring with Macy Gray?
Yeah man, it’s going to great, it’s going to be an interesting experience. (laughs).

Your sounds are quite different, how do you think the audiences are going to react?
I know! (laughs) It reminds me of when Prince opened for The Stones and yeah the reaction wasn’t great (laughs). He got booed off the stage, people were throwing cans of fruit at him. So yeah quite an odd pairing (laughs).

To be fair, she is quite “out there” her self as a personality, so it kinda matches?
Well she checked the project out, she’s a fan, she personally asked for us, so that’s cool.

    Have you met her?
Yeah, she’s awesome, she’s the real deal man.

Onto your name, where did you get 8Bit from?
It came from the audio resolution when I was creating songs, it distorts it, it makes it grainy, it creates an analogue element, I started doing this early on, and kept doing it so it’s just one of my little tricks you know. So I feel like 8Bit, a bit grainy (laughs) Most people just call me 8 now anyway, which I love.

It also sounds like a 90s sitcom name
    (Laughter) yeah yeah totally…

Out of everything you produced what is the one thing that you’re most proud of?
It’s something I did with Gaga, called Brown Eyes I just feel like we really captured the moment, when I listen to it, it puts me back into that place, the energy, the creativity and the excitement with her. It feels so 1970’s Beatles, I feel like I nailed it, It doesn’t feel like it was produced, felt like it just came from Gaga herself, which I love.

On the subject of Gaga, what happened?
You know it’s strange, I don’t know when the “breakdown” happened, I’m not ever sure I know, it’s kinda like two people were set on this path to go so far together, and I think in life when we try to fight that, it’s when (you) come into probs and conflict… I guess for me I didn’t want to face that. I wanted to be on that ride for as long as possible.

When she went to Interscope (record label, part of the Universal family), it’s like setting a bird free, and you can’t expect it to fly back, it’s free and it soars. (Gaga) It just happened so big, so fast, it was mayhem, you try to hold on and it just wasn’t meant to be. I feel like we were put on this earth for that brief moment, it was like I’m supposed to find her, find her sound to develop her as much as I could.

So now on the flipside, She was me, she, 8Bit and I was happy with that, but now I’m telling myself to do this for me, I want you eating this, I want you singing this – you know…

It’s good that you seem settled with it now, and it’s good you’ve both made peace.
It’s true, I’m glad I got to meet her, share the project with her, and she is a massive influence on me as an artist, I learned a lot from her, in terms of her personality, stage presence, how she writes and the way she thinks. I would never have gotten here to 8Bit if none of that took place. I would thank her today, I wouldn’t change a thing!

  • ALBUM REVIEW | Röyksopp The Inevitable End

★★★★★ | Röyksopp The Inevitable End

Like life, all good things come to an end, and for Norwegian electronica superstars that time is now, but fear not they are leaving with us with one last incredible album and a little hint that it’s not quite the last of them.

Album opener “Skulls” is a futuristic slab of electro-pop, addicting, pulsing and voiced by an ethereal sounding pop robot that Daft Punk would be jealous of and it certainly sets the tone for the rest of album, ie euphoric cry-on-the-dancefloor anthems.

Next up is a massively reworked version of the Robyn featuring “Monument” gone is the laid back chilled vibe of the original and in comes chunky synth riffs & throbbing beats, it sounds bigger and somehow more epic. “Sordid Affair” is next and it’s a polished little soft-dance number about heartbreak, following track “You Know I Have To Go” follows the same path but takes the tempo down a good few notches for a other worldly 3am walking back from the club on your own thinking about stuff experience.

“Save Me” up next and takes that tempo back up a few and grows nicely into a rather sprawling melancholic love song, the tempo goes sky high next for album highlight “I Had This Thing” the very definition of a euphoric-cry-on-the-dancefloor anthem. Robyn makes her 2nd and final appearance on the short but not sweet violin enhanced bleepy swirls and swear word laden “Rong”

The tempo remains firmly down for “Here She Comes Again” and “Running To The Sea” the latter is another superb piece of throbbing cry-on-the-dancefloor slice of melancholy euphoria, “Compulsion” is up next and it’s a big piece of dark undulating electronica, “Coup de Grace” is a sweeping electronic instrumental (the only one on the album) and it serves as a bit of an epic emotional build up to the last ever album track “Thank You” which is a touching pop robot voiced piano led little number, thanking us forever. *weep*

Whatever the future holds for Röyksopp this last ever album is a fantastic way to say farewell and thank you for the music

  • OPINION | Yes or No… Is Scotland going to go?

On Thursday 18th Sept 2014, History WILL be made. Never in my lifetime have I seen as many people engaged in politics, some for the very first time, there have been many arguments, wild accusations and straight out lies from both sides, and there have been some very ugly scenes on the streets, It feels like a different country and sometimes it feels like the beginning of a new revolution.

It is exciting, scary and sometimes downright awful, but a passionate fire in Scotland has been lit, and it is more powerful and brighter than ever, and whatever your view on it all, it can’t be denied what has happened amongst the people has been incredible.

But what about the LGBTI community in Scotland, how will it affect us?
On Mon 15th Sept 2014, The Pink News website, published the results of a poll of 2163 LGBTI people and 54% voted in favour of a Yes vote, When I tweeted I wanted people’s opinions for this article, the majority of people also said they are voting Yes, and again the majority of LGBTI people on my social networks also favouring a Yes vote.

Why is the Yes vote so strong amongst the LGBTI community in Scotland?
Since the Scottish Parliament was formed, it has taken incredible strides for equality for the LGBTI community, but Britain as you may or may not know has no written constitution, decisions can be made and over-turned just as easily depending on who is in power at any given time, eg. nothing is set in stone, what is law now could just as easily not be law in the next government.

From an LGBTI point of view that would be disastrous for everyone, for everyone who has fought for equal rights.

From a Yes point of view, Scotland will have a written constitution with today’s laws written and enshrined in it, that would be a sense of stability for LGBTI communities all over Scotland, we would be equal, it cannot be taken away, an incredible reward for the decades of fighting for the smallest of rights to being able to marry the person we love. It would be leading the way in equality rights.

It is with this in mind the Rainbow Paper was published detailing why a Yes vote would be beneficial for LGBTI communities –

    What If No Wins
If a No vote does indeed prevail on Friday morning, then LGBTI communities all over Britain should be aware that after the next general election in May 2015 and the Conservative party are still in power they may seek to review and repeal the Human Rights act, placing everything that everyone who has fought for in jeopardy. That is something that everyone should be aware of, no matter where they live in the UK.

The Morning After The Night Before
On Friday 19th Sept, Britain is going to be a very different place, and that IS scary, even if a No vote has succeeded, a fire has been lit not just in Scottish politics but all over the UK, and the Govt and Westminster have a right to be scared, we all want change, we all want something better and we can and should make it happen.

If a Yes vote prevails, it is very important to remember that it is NOT because Scotland hates England and all that tiresome rubbish the media and scumbags of society are throwing about, Hadrians wall is not suddenly going to re-appear, it was just a chance for change, a chance to make life better, a chance to have your voice heard.

Scotland will always quite literally be a part of Britain, it will just have its own voice, It will be your annoying brother, that deep down you love to bits, just as England will be the annoying older Brother that we also dearly love.

I LOVE Britain, It is Great! Just because there maybe 2 Governments instead of 1, does not mean a thing.

I will still count myself as British, just as I have always done no matter which way it goes.
In the words of the legendary RuPaul: Can I Get An Amen Up In Here!

  • INTERVIEW | The Freemasons

Presenting The Freemasons, a Grammy-nominated Brighton based English-Irish duo of DJ’s, producers and remixers. They are known the world over for their incredible remixes of some of the world’s biggest artists, here they give us the lowdown on new album Shakedown 3, and working with the Minogues.

Absolutely love Shakedown 3! The dance scene has seen a massive change and resurgence after a rough few years, is that one of the reasons why you scaled back a bit on Freemasons duties?
First of all we’re both so glad you love it as it was a labour of love and very personal. Yes we pulled back a touch when the sound changed and what we tend to call new trance (EDM) came to the fore, as a lot of it wasn’t our thing (we do dabble, just never inhale). Also sonic production changes in dance music, meant everyone from our era was caught a little bit with pants down and had to dig back in, do some homework and get everything sounding bigger, better, faster (and even stronger). It was a 2 year process – possibly more, to get the new material sounding the way we wanted and just as we were firing back up, what should happen? … Classic house suddenly jumped back into the public psyche and before you knew it pianos and organ bass lines were back – Yipeeeeee. Not only that, the young producers had moved the sound on even further and suddenly you find yourself very excitedly poring over Cool Cut and Buzz Chart listings, as some brilliant new House classics are being made!

I’m afraid, I need to ask the obligatory “why did you choose Freemasons” for a name? Is it because you are secretly plotting to take over the world, one remix at a time?
It would have worked if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!! Anyone old enough to remember Hannah Barbera raise your hands (quietly) now… It is actually a fairly mundane answer – the first FM studio was very close to Hove’s Freemasons Tavern and it was a great Friday night pub back then where literally anything could happen. The record company phoned up for an artist name whilst we’d popped out to get some ‘air’ and we looked down at the menu. However one day later I was coming back from a horrible meeting in London after a Japanese project had gone completely beyond pear and I noticed I was surrounded by a really chatty bunch of (what can only be described as) pensioners. They’d just been up to some do at the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s (the proper posh London Mayor, not the blond Tory jester) and were swapping war stories. I have to say I was really warmed by their friendship and later on they kept talking about the lodge – I was surrounded by Freemasons! Life has a funny way of doing that. If you dig deep there really are no coincidences.

You recently launched a little side project called “Pegasus” what made you want to do that?
It was a reaction to some of the one note anti-musical Noise Fest that seemed to be everywhere when Dubstep and EDM hit hard. Now I’ll never be snobby about any movement as without punk, there would not have been New Wave, and without New Wave we wouldn’t have had Yazoo, ABC’s Lexicon of Love and Blue Monday by New Order. But personally (and call me old fashioned) I love a good ol’ chord change with a cracking vocal melody across it, making your ears breathe and the hairs on your arms stand up. Now a few years back, the hairs were standing up on my arms but mainly in blind panic as much of the sound of ‘then’ resembled a Combine Harvester eating Notting Hill’s vinyl exchange and appeared to actually only have one note in it (and bit of ‘wobble’ – whatever that was). When will.i.am ruined a perfectly good Dirty Dancing ballad, that was the straw that not only broke the camel’s back, but gave it a damn good shafting too. We had to do something, so we started Pegasus as a guise in which we could make beautiful things again. Across tempos and sometimes outside of house, whilst everyone else was trying to make sounds to scare young children. Luckily the East End was brimming full of pride having rediscovered house again, and in no time we felt thoroughly fashionable again. In The Blue from Shakedown II was the first Pegasus track ever and we’d never thought organ bass lines would come back – who knew!

You guys are massively famous all over the world, where do you love playing most?
England, Australia, America and the Balkans have been our second homes for the last 10 years so they will always be special, but every gig is a new adventure and new friends to make, so we never look shy to any trip.

You also have a massive following in the gay clubbing culture, did you ever expect that?
No, it came as a completely wonderful surprise, but let’s be honest here – there’s no better place in the world than a gay club for a good sing-along, and as you know, we do LOVE a Diva, and we love our songs. To be supported for so long so passionately by such a wonderful community is (I would happily say) one of our greatest accolades. We’ve made life-long friends, we had our own tribute float at Sydney Mardi Gras, and some utterly amazing things have happened, including a waxing in Fire Island!

Still on the ‘gay theme’ you also remixed queen of the gays, Kylie, what was that like and did she like it?
It was simply brilliant. My dear friend Steve Anderson has been involved in the live shows for years and Biff Stannard and Ash who worked on The One and with Kylie for years, are wonderful chums, so we’ve only ever been a few degrees of separation from Team Minogue. Also, after meeting and chatting to Dannii a few stolen times in Oz, I have to say that nature could not have produced a nicer/kinder pair of artists, role models and businesswomen than Kylie and Dannii if it tried to, and they deserve every bit of love they get from us all.

How did it feel being nominated for a Grammy award?
I think I nearly got run over when I got the call! It’s the kinda reverse of stopping traffic and we are both so incredibly proud. I think my favourite part was texting my Father. He’s recently retired and has only just told me he always wanted to get into the music industry as a singer as a young man in the 50s. Unfortunately he was from a tiny village in the country and he was never able to fulfill his heart’s ambition. When I saw him next he bought up an engraved glass he’d had made just so I would get something whether we won or not. I had no idea just how incredibly proud he was of me until then and it made me melt.

You have remixed some of the biggest names in music, is there anyone you would love to remix that you haven’t yet?
Will someone please send us all the Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ and ‘Off the Wall’ multi-tracks and the big ones from Whitney’s first album for good measure? We’ve actually done incredibly well and to be honest, the more we’re hearing the new breed, the more I’m getting excited about the next lot of singers coming through.

Did anyone ever turn down an offer of a Freemasons’ mix (name and shame)?
I can hold my head up and actually say. we’ve never offered, we’ve only ever been asked. Although, there is a magnificent Emile Sandé bootleg of Heaven on the studio drives somewhere. You would be amazed if we told you who we’ve turned down though ;0

On Shakedown 3, Venice In Peril is my favourite track as it samples one of my favourite pieces of music, if you had to pick, what would be your favourite “Freemasons” song off Shakedown 3?
I’m so glad so many people have picked that up! I was utterly, utterly obsessed with the track as a teenager, after hearing it at a warehouse party in the very early 90s. I have always wanted to cover it, but only now has the sampling of strings got so incredibly accurate I felt we could do it justice. As for personal faves, I love so many of them. Lyrically, I think Sea of Fire is total genius – ‘Here comes the thunder valentine with stormy kisses’…Emma had visions of Henry VIII’s battleships on fire off the shore of the white cliffs of Dover. But also, HANA (a local Brighton artist) has written one hell of a song in True Love Survivor. But you know we love our girls, and Amanda’s Let It Be Me, Bailey’s The Fall, Jude’s Paradise, and In The Blue have not been off the stereo. However, simply because it was amazing to record our friend doing that incredible Gravity- esque ad-lib in our studio and, because of the fun we had writing it with her and Ben Onono, it has to be us and Katherine Ellis’ Cold Light Of Day.

Any big names lined up for a future Freemasons’ remix, and can you give us a little hint?
For the moment, after months of endless work on Shakedown 3 it’s time to tour, rest and recuperate, so all that we have right now, we give to you on this release!

What has been your personal favourite Freemasons’ remix you have done?
I can’t pick one – Whitney for the look on our friend Scott’s face when we took him to the studio to play him the finished mix (to call him an enormous Whitney fan would be painfully underestimating the situation – I’m convinced he had a draw full of restraining orders), but also Deja Vu Beyoncé. I remember calling our manager and telling him it was going to be career changing when we completed it (how right we were), but my love of it is very personal. It was the first time we’d got the sounds utterly bang on – Disco colliding with House and a set of chords even Nile Rogers could have been proud of. To see so many smiling faces of so many crowds over the years when it’s played and know you’ve made people happy, I’d take that over any success any day, month or year. Now, ‘Ring the Alarm’…there’s another chapter!!

Sum up Shakedown 3 in 3 words or less
    Blood, Sweat and Tears.

  • OPINION | what’s wrong with being Mr Average

Pride season is well and truly underway, and we have many reasons to celebrate this year but why do I feel increasingly isolated from my community?

As a gay community we were supposed to be inclusive and non-judgemental of other people but these days there really is no truth to that anymore. As a homosexual in his late 30s I’m practically already dead, over the hill etc etc, and as stupid and wrong as that is, it is only the tip of the iceberg of the problems that are currently infecting the gay community all over the world.

    SOCIAL MEDIA
One of the biggest issues I have today is Gay / Social media and the constant in your face pictures of “muscle men” as being the ONLY form of male that is apparently attractive, it’s so constant and aggressive that I think the younger generation have developed a skewed perception of what makes an attractive man.

Every single day on my friends’ timelines and news feeds, anytime a picture is posted of an “attractive” man (famous or a cheeky pic of someone on the train) you can absolutely guarantee it’s somebody muscles or a digitally enhanced six pack, yes it’s lovely to look at a nice body, but it’s also incredibly tiresome when you see picture after picture, day after day of men with bodies that look exactly the same as each other.

It all has a ripple effect and that’s never more apparent when you’re using a gay dating app. The amount of times I have been asked for a “body pic” and when I say no, it’s either usually no more reply or “is it cos you’re fat?” and by “fat” it now generally means you don’t have a toned or muscled body. I find that incredibly sad and worrying.

There are plenty of attractive men out there that don’t have 6-day-a-week-gym-bodies but you wouldn’t know they existed, and you won’t see them on the cover of magazines or in silly “Top 10 Hunks” columns.

We have been wiped out in terms of media, we don’t exist anymore, we are dead.

Perhaps it’s time for the gay media to take some responsibility and start including people who don’t have those “desirable” muscles and bodies in their photo-shoots, imagine how incredible that would be, how liberating the positive long-term effects it would have.

In the 21st century we are finally starting to be awarded the equal rights that any human being should have, but what good is equality when a large part of the community is increasingly being isolated or forgotten about by gay / social media.

Most gay men don’t have the perfect body, or the perfect job with a jet-setting lifestyle that all gay men apparently seem to have and if we don’t we are constantly trying to be sold that lifestyle whether you like it or not.

There is nothing wrong with being “Mr Average” with a perfectly normal non-gym body.

  • JUST FOR FUN: Top 10 Tips For Spotting Gay Guys

You know what it’s like, It’s a Saturday afternoon you’re in the city centre with your besties, having a little coffee and possibly a score if you’re in the mood, you’re people watching and you just always end up wondering if that hot bearded barista is of the homosexual kind or not. So here is a handy cut-out-and-keep guide.

UNDERWEAR: It is the old standard, but it really is true, we gays do like a nice pair of pants! And there are 2 or 3 definite makes that say “Hey I’m Gay” Whether it’s the classic white Calvin Klein with coloured waistband, the latest Andrew Christian with pouch enhancement technology or a good old-fashioned jock strap.

FACIAL HAIR: Something of a very modern trend this, but it seems a lot us gays are sporting more and more facial hair these days, as do a lot of straight guys of course, but gay guys tend to have more trimmed, looked after facial hair rather than the unkempt and couldn’t be bother shaving look.

MUSIC: If you’re wondering if the hot boy who has just sat next to you on the bus is a “gay” then have a sneaky look at his iPod if possible. If it’s full of Miley Cyrus, Kylie, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and the Wicked Soundtrack then yes that “Boy is a Bottom” most likely.

TV: Getting more excited about “The Great British Bake-off” and “RuPauls Drag Race” over the latest football and sports news pretty much guarantees you a golden life time membership of being gay.

SKIN: Lotions, lotions and lots of lovely potions! Every good gay has a wide range of face washes, face scrubbers, body washes, skin moisturisers and after shaves in their bathrooms, maybe even a spot concealer stick hidden away.

EUROVISION: If you hear the object of your potential desire mention Eurovision, then honey you’ve just struck lucky on your big pink bingo card! It’s a scientific fact that straight men are genetically engineered to be appalled by it.

HAIR STYLES: If you find yourself suddenly surrounded by a group of strangers with their hair straightened to all manners of gravity-defying angles with random bits of colour, don’t be alarmed! It’s just your friendly local group of younger homosexuals having a good time.

HOLIDAYS: If you happen to get chatting to someone at the airport while waiting to board and they mention Gran Canaria or Sitges then congratulations! You got yourself a big ole gay.

STYLE: It’s another old standard, but it still remains very true, we gays know how to dress! From the comfy and casual to trendy or just simply going to work, we just know what to wear, it’s in our DNA!

FOOTWEAR: If you find out that someone has a larger footwear collection than a Judy Garland and Kylie exhibition put together then you got yourself a gay! And who most probably has a little fetish for feet and trainers.

    Lady Gaga – G.U.Y. ★★★★★

After running into a bit of trouble with the video (i.e. none) for last single Do What You Want Gaga returns with the promise of her best video to date, it was shot at the uber swank Hearst Castle in California, and as for the song? G.U.Y sees Gaga return with a massive balls to the dancefloor walls anthem. One of the highlights from her current album, produced by the now Grammy Award winning DJ, Producer and Popstar Zedd. 5/5

Sigma – Nobody To Love ★★★★

Stand by for one of the biggest singles of this year, the pre-orders alone have guaranteed that! It’s a massive drum n bass affair with an incredibly catchy gospel tinged chorus to boot. 5/5

Shakira – Dare (La La La) ★★★★

Her hips don’t lie and neither does this tune, kicking off her new album (out next week) is this surprisingly huge dance anthem, sadly it is the only song of its type on the album but that makes it stand out from the crowd. Truth or dare on the dancefloor anyone? 4/5

  • ALBUM REVIEW | Kylie, Kiss Me Once

★★★★ |  Kylie, Kiss Me Once

The shimmering pop queen is back with a confident new update to her sound, she’s also feeling sexy and she wants you to know it!

    INTO THE BLUE:
After a year of chucking out some promo singles, Kylie is back to business good and proper, with the lead single from Kiss Me Once. An epic stringed euphoric song in the same vein as All The Lovers and one the few “Kylie” songs on the album. ★★★

    MILLION MILES:
Guitar intro alert! Don’t panic about 13 seconds later along comes the big throbbing beat to reassure you everything is going to be OK. A dance-pop guitar pop infused banger that wouldn’t sound out of place on the “Fever” / “Light Years” album. A song about feeling detached from any sexual activity and enjoying it! ★★★★

    I WAS GONNA CANCEL:
Also known as that Pharrell produced song, and you can tell! His trademark cowbell sound signature funky basslines are all in place, the addition of some electro beats, a ghostly choir that pops up elevates the song and like much of the album it rattles along at a fair pace, so it doesn’t out stay its welcome. ★★★

    SEXY LOVE:
This is another song that starts off very Kylie, and it really wouldn’t sound out of place on the “Fever” album, it also wouldn’t sound out of place on Daft Punks “Random Access Memories”. It’s fun, it’s frothy, it’s flirty and it’s precisely the kind of dance-pop that Kylie does so well. ★★★★

    SEXERCISE:
Sound the co-written by Sia Klaxon. An interesting track for both Kylie and Sia, a sexual innuendo laden offering that starts off with some lovely airy strings and then comes in the chunky dub-step flecked bassline. It’s perfectly matched with the whole tone of the lyrics. It IS going to divide a lot of her long term fans, you will either love it or hate it. I love it! ★★★★

    FEELS SO GOOD:
A cover of the little known song Indiana by Tom Aspaul and produced by the uber trendy MNEK (who has just score a Top 5 hit with his latest single) It just seems like it belongs to Kylie, it’s perfect for her, again it’s that kind of fluttering breathless dance-pop that she does so well, and it’s a nice juxtaposition to the down and dirty affair of the previous track. An album highlight. ★★★★

    IF ONLY:
Don’t panic your CD / Download isn’t warped! This a stuttering beat infused electro “ballad” It’s big sounding and the marching beat with futuristic synths come together to make something pretty unique and addictve. The chorus is huge btw, it’s the song I have been singing most after listening. ★★★★

    LES SEX:
Starting off with some clockwork style beats (that remain throughout the track), it bursts into life a few seconds later and it doesn’t stop! It’s the only real cheeky wink to camp Kylie, and it feels like a very modern successor to her camp classic Your Disco Needs You. Weird electro-frog noises, big giant electro riffs, processed snatches of vocals, it’s all a bit bonkers really. It is a song that was made to be performed live and will probably be one of the highlights of her upcoming tour. ★★★

    KISS ME ONCE:
The album’s title track is once again co-written by Sia, in fact after the very first sentence and after verse you will want to burst into a quick chant of “Tiataniummmmmm” This is properly brilliant. It sounds like a classic “SAW” produced track but with very modern bells and whistles attached, and it’s probably the most “Kylie” song on the whole album. And after all the flirty sex infused songs it’s nice to have a song about love conquering all. ★★★★★

    BEAUTIFUL
Also known as the duet with Enrique Iglesias, and considering he is about to have a massive Top 5 hit with his new single, it’s perfect timing. It’s very electronic and the chorus is undeniably huge and it literally erupts out of nowhere, but the robotic vocodered vocals of the verses are really grating. It’s a very bold move and it definitely stands out and as a future single it may be just the song to get Kylie noticed again. Again it’s going to divide a lot of people. ★★★

    FINE:
Saving the best for last? This ain’t no sad ballad album closer! It’s a nice 90’s house influenced solid dance-pop banger, the surprise stuttering looped male vocals as found on many of the biggest dance hits of the past year really help give this a very modern feel and it’s a great ending to the album. ★★★★★

Overall this is perhaps the best Kylie album of her career, it’s modern without sounding try-hard and she seems refreshed and she sounds like she is absolutely loving singing it. It’s a great update to her “sound” and has a high replay factor, which is great since the sunny days are a coming!
