  • Daniel Mays to star in brand new gay drama for BBC 2

Daniel Mays (Line Of Duty, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Public Enemies) stars in BBC Two’s powerful factual drama as Peter Wildeblood, a thoughtful and private gay journalist whose lover Eddie McNally (played by newcomer to television, Richard Gadd), under pressure from the authorities, turned Queen’s evidence against him in one of the most explosive court cases of the 1950s – the infamous Montagu Trial.

More than ten years before the decriminalisation of homosexual acts in 1967, Peter Wildeblood, and his friends Lord Montagu (Mark Edel-Hunt) and Michael Pitt-Rivers, were found guilty of homosexual offences and jailed.

With his career in tatters and his private life painfully exposed, Wildeblood began his sentence a broken man, but he emerged from Wormwood Scrubs a year later determined to do all he could to change the way these draconian laws against homosexuality impacted on the lives of men like him.

Daniel says: “I’m incredibly proud to be part of a drama that tells such an important real-life story. Peter Wildeblood is a fascinating, complex, yet flawed character from a time when being a gay man in Britain was incredibly difficult – I can’t wait to bring his tale to life for the BBC Two audience.”

Patrick Holland, Channel Editor, BBC Two, said,

“50 years ago, it was a crime to be a gay man in the UK. Against The Law is a stunning piece that melds drama and documentary testimony to tell the story of one man, and his wider generation, as they struggled to make society accept their sexuality as non-criminal. It is brilliant to have a film that brings the authorship of Brian Fillis, the vision of director Fergus O’Brien, and the outstanding talent of Daniel Mays and cast to this important subject”

The drama also features Mark Gatiss (Taboo, Sherlock) as Wildeblood’s prison psychiatrist, Doctor Landers and Charlie Creed-Miles (Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders) as Superintendent Jones.

Woven through this powerful drama is real-life testimony from a chorus of men who lived through those dark days, when homosexuals were routinely imprisoned or forced to undergo chemical aversion therapy in an attempt to cure them of their “condition”. There is also testimony from a retired police officer whose job it was to enforce these laws, and a former psychiatric nurse who administered the so-called cures. All of these accounts serve to amplify the themes of the drama and help to immerse us in the reality of a dark chapter in our recent past, a past still within the reach of living memory.

Written by Brian Fillis, Against the Law is directed by Fergus O’Brien, produced by Scott James Bassett and executive produced by Aysha Rafaele, Creative Director of The Documentary Unit, BBC Studios.

Made by BBC Studios, Against the Law will broadcast on BBC Two later in the year.

  • Best and worst places to pop the question to your man this Valentine’s

A new survey of nearly 3,000 Brits said the location to pop the question was more important than the ring itself and that your words of love spoken during the proposal would make or break the deal for a third of them.

The survey compiled by AttractionTix.co.uk revealed the following best and worst places to propose this Valentine’s, unless you’re part of the 40% who said Valentine’s was a bad day to propose, but overall February was a good month to say ‘Will you marry me?’

So there you have it. If the mood does take you to propose to a loved one (hopefully!) this Valentine’s, then try to avoid holding a surprise party in the local chippy with the family and friends, but instead get yourself some tickets for Alton Towers, then at least if he says no you can leave him on the Oblivion rollercoaster so he can also get that heart sinking feeling.

  • INTERVIEW | Joey Arias – Love Bites

Legendary New York queen of the demi-monde, cabaret and performance artist Joey Arias is coming to London to play the insanely stylish Crazy Coqs nightclub at Zedel in Piccadilly.

    CREDIT: Sean Menendez

It’s a rare treat and Joey has a staggering back catalogue with decades of experience performing both in New York and internationally. During his many collaborations with Klaus Nomi he sung with David Bowie on Saturday Night Live in 1979, he’s played Joan Crawford, featured in Wigstock, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and Flawless. He featured in George Michael’s Too Funky video and sold out runs in Las Vegas with Cirque Du Soleil. He’s also a style icon in his own right, transcending drag and he has a unique and haunting singing style that has echoes of Billie Holiday’s rich tones.

Hi and welcome back to London. How does it feel to be here again?
I love London very much, I’ve been coming since the punk days and I’ve seen the changes going on. Some places I don’t recognise but I always look forward to seeing my friends, old and new. Facebook has brought new faces and this is exciting. I love meeting the new always but I always have my pals from the past. That is what London means to me. The people, ‘We The People’.

Can you tell us a bit about what we can expect from ‘Love Bites’?
Well ‘Love Bites’ is a Metaphor for what’s going on in the world! It goes hand in hand. You could love someone or something or just an idea and once in a while you snapped at it or it just didn’t work out the way you thought it was going. I think it’s a great concept for Valentine’s Week.

Looking at your previous sets, your music choices and influences seem wide and varied. Who’s inspiring you at the moment?
I love all music, but I love listening to Jazz a lot, Ornette Coleman and Billie Holiday. Then I go back to 60s Rock with The Ronettes, Beach Boys and I also love music from the British Invasion like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Cilla Black. I also love Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and more! Then we move onto Madonna, Boy George and Sex Pistols. Every so often I put the Radio on and see what’s out there. These days it just comes and goes, it’s all happening too fast. So I would say, maybe some of the great singers like Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Marvin Gaye have been in my ear these days. I want to work with my great friend Ben Allison who will re-write some of these tunes to make them my own. I have been working on lots of original tunes. I want to get a new album out soon!

How do the London and New York cabaret and drag scenes compare?
The cabaret and drag scenes are a bit different. It has to do with the venues and the vibe of these two cities. We used to have Leigh Bowery who really pushed the envelope. Susanne Bartsch had Leigh in NYC once a month, so that was a blend of two cultures. Then in NYC you also have Earl Dax presenting ‘Pussy Fagot’ with many other great NYC performers and guests from around the world that happen to be in town. I also love Wet Chiffon that’s in Hackney. Brilliant! I have to say NYC has things going on 24/7, anything goes, and I know London does also. I’ve been to wild parties there… coming home with the sun on my face!

Do you have any favourite places in London?
I used to Love Freedom Cafe! That was amazing! You’re going to laugh but I love Marks & Spencer’s and Boots! I have to go to those places all the time. I love when friends take me to clubs, trashy and chic. I can’t remember the names, and then there are those wild sex parties, Oh my! But I gave them up or they gave me up! Fun, but always be safe!
Really looking forward to playing at Live At Zédel!

‘Love Bites’ runs from 11th to the 14th of February 2017 at The Crazy Coqs at Zedel Buy tickets here: https://www.brasseriezedel.com/live-at-zedel/joey-arias/74236136

  • 7 reasons your penis does not smell so good

Is your manhood smelling less than rosy? There might be a number of reasons for that hideous cheesy aroma that’s making all the lads faint…

why does my penis smell so bad
    CREDIT: Depositphotos

No one wants a smelly penis. So if you’re wondering why yours is smelling so bad, here are some reasons, as always if you’re really concerned about your health then book yourself an appointment with your doctor.

    Just general sweat and dirt…

Are you cleaning down there enough? Guys who tend to do a lot of sport might be getting smelly in their private parts. Make sure after each workout or run that you wash your genitals using fresh, clean warm water. Your groin could be causing the smell rather than your penis. It’s a brilliant place for bacteria to multiply by their millions. It’s dark, damp and warm – the perfect environment.

    Crotch rot

Yep, as nasty as that sounds – some sports fanatics will know about crotch rot, it’s caused by wearing dirty underwear or jocks for a prolonged period. Make sure after exercising that you wash your undies, in a hot wash to get rid of any bacteria. BTW it does have a proper name, it’s called Tinea cruris. It causes itching or burning in the groin area and near the anus. It can be caused by athlete’s foot and can be transferred through your clothing. So be careful when putting your trousers on!

    Smegma

Smegma is a cheesy, white looking substance that you’re more likely to have if you’re uncut (have a foreskin), although cut guys produce it too. It’s a natural lubricant for the penis, but it does start to smell if you don’t wash it. It’s basically made up of dead skin cells, fatty oils and other debris from penis secretions. That cheesy smell? Well, that’s bacterial breakdown my friends. So give it a wash.

    Balanitis

Poor hygiene will cause Balanitis, an inflammation of the head of the dick. The foreskin can also be infected. It can also be created by a thrush infection or other skin condition. See your doctor if this happens.

    STIs

Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia can both cause your cock to smell. You might not even know you have either of these infections, but it’s wise to look out for these symptoms:

    • White discharge from your penis – when you’re not peeing or cumming
    • A painful, burning when you pee
    • Penis irritation and needing to pee frequently.

Go see your docs and do not delay.

    You’re not washing it properly

If you give your penis the showerhead but not giving it a good old rub, you might not be getting all the smeg off. So as well as the shower head get your fingers over that helmet and give it a good rub!

    No roll back…

If you can’t roll back your foreskin or your foreskin is really tight around the head of your penis there might be a build up of dirt and bacteria which you’re not able to wash away. You should probably try and get an appointment with your GP to discuss what you can do about it…

  • Charlie Hides makes the cut for RuPaul’s Drag Race

Charlie Hides makes the cut for RuPaul’s Drag Race

Drag sensation Charlie Hides is to star in Season 9 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Hurrah, so the new cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been announced and Charlie Hides has been confirmed for the show. We take a look back at some of the take out from our interview with the Massachusetts-born Charlie Hides.

So how did Charlie get into the world of drag?

As a kid I was in school shows and entertained my family with different characters. I used to do impersonations of my classmates and teachers and of TV personalities. The first time I did actual drag was as a teen ager as a way to sneak into nightclubs when I was still underage.

Charlie is, of course, utterly famous for his videos of Cher and Madonna did you know it takes around 20-30 hours to film each one?

I have so much fun making the videos, I don’t consider it work. Sometimes I come home from a gig and film till 4 in the morning but I keep going as long as I’m having fun. The day I filmed the Exorcist scene for my Halloween video. The guy from SKY showed up to install a new box in the bedroom. There were lights and camera all around the bed and I still had on some green make up. The look on his face was priceless.

How have the celebs reacted to his parodies of them?

Kylie has been very sweet and said some very nice things about me on Twitter and in interviews. And I’ve heard that Cher has started using some of my catch phrases with her sisters and friends.

This is the amazing reason this NHS nurse wears a rainbow lanyard

Meet the NHS nurse who wears his rainbow lanyard with pride so that LGBT patients have a visual sign on who they can confide in on LGBT issues.

“Why I wear the rainbow lanyard”

The following is an excerpt of an article that will appear in full in the next issue of the Trust Body and Mind magazine.

When he was younger, David Van De Velde had no one to turn to on matters LGBT- Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. That’s why the clinical team leader, and qualified mental health nurse wears the rainbow lanyard with pride.

“For me, the reason I wear it now is to try and help others in the same situation, because I didn’t have anyone to help me with that.  It’s about trying to change things from the ground,” he says.

The colourful lanyards attached to staff ID badges were introduced across the Trust in February 2012, as a voluntary way for staff of any sexual orientation to indicate that they’re a ‘safe listening ear for LGBT service users.’

And David, who was recently elected co-chair of the Trust’s LGBT network knows first-hand that the lanyards work.

“Because I’m wearing the lanyard they feel comfortable enough to confide in me and ask me things, for information or talk to me about things they wouldn’t be able to talk to anyone else about for fear of judgement,” says David.

LGBT patients who approach David tend to have common concerns and questions, including where to find support for abuse, identity crises, loneliness and suicide, and how to connect with other LGBT people.

    LGBT patient experience

The lanyard initiative was rolled out after a 2012 survey found that a majority of patients at The Gordon and St Charles Hospitals didn’t feel supported or able to disclose their LGBT status to hospital staff.

The Trust wanted to change this. The LGBT Allies got to work. It introduced the rainbow lanyards across the Trust, and a number of measures aimed at tackling the issues, including a communications campaign and training sessions for staff, led by LGBT advocates.

Alison Devlin, Equalities and Diversity Manager requested another survey in 2015/2016 to see if anything had changed for patients. The results were far better, with an increase in patients saying there was no issue around their LGBT status. Patients said the rainbow lanyards were positive and reported feeling safe around staff wearing them.

    LGBT and an ethnic minority

At the moment, David’s on a rotational programme where he gets placed in four different specialisms across the Trust every six months, so he gets around a lot. Despite the good that he’s doing, he admits that he’s been subject to abuse when wearing the lanyard because he’s not just a member of the LGBT community but also an ethnic minority.

“People hurl homophobic abuse. People from part of my racial background (in my case I’m mixed-race) saying that I have made the wrong choice and that sort of stuff. You get a lot of abuse from people but I’m not doing it for them. I’m doing it for the four or five people who come to me a week, and that could be the moment it changes their life,” he says.

“I did get some negative abuse by patients who didn’t understand it. I mean a lot of them would come and apologise later but I think it’s worth it though because if you can save someone from killing themselves because they don’t accept who they really are, and they can confide in you. I did actually have a case like that where somebody came forward, who I don’t think had worked out himself who he really was yet. I think if he had not had that contact… because before he came in he had tried to commit suicide as he wasn’t happy and his family weren’t happy with his direction. I think that by seeing the lanyard he was able to come and speak to me about things and I was able to give him more information.”

David is now the face of a new Trust campaign to promote the rainbow lanyard.

Read the full article in the next issue of our Body and Mind magazine, out soon.
