    It’s 1985 and the music of Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet were at the top of the charts. Sing Street follows the story of one young man during this era who decides to start his own band to woo a local girl.

    Dublin during this time was not a very good place to grow up. People were flocking to London where careers and money were to be made. Fresh, young and innocent Cosmo (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), baby-faced yet intelligent and going through puberty, is struggling with the eminent divorce of his parents. They no longer can afford to send him to private school so he’s chucked into attending the very rough Synge Street school where he immediately gets beaten up by the school’s bullies. But Cosmo comes up with the idea of forming a band because he wants to impress pretty 16-year old Penny (Maria Doyle Kennedy) who he spots sitting on her stoop at a girl’s boarding house where she lives. Cosmo immediately takes a liking to her but she says that she’s going to become a model and is planning on moving to London with her ‘adult’ boyfriend. But Cosmo is really keen on her and in order to impress her, together with his mates, they form the Sing Street band, but there’s a small matter of sourcing instruments and getting others (preferably talented) to join. After lots and lots of practice in a friend’s living room, Sing Street actually become very good. But Cosmo is still keen on impressing Penny, so he and the band invite her to star in their music video, made on the very cheap. As Sing Street continue to get better and better, and with fellow band members, they become local celebrities. With Cosmo’s no good for nothing brother Brendan’s support (Jack Reynor), who was never actually able to follow his dreams of leaving Dublin, Sing Street continue their plans to be successful and to conquer Dublin.

    Sing Street is a good old fashioned British musical that could’ve been made with the Monkees back in the 1960s. But it’s now 2016 and Sing Street is a very good throwback to that era and captures the look and feel and sound of that time. Sing Street really works thanks to a great young cast and crisp direction and writing by John Carney (the Oscar-winning 2007 film Once). But it’s the music in Sing Street that will get you to tap your toe and to hum along. Music by the actual actors in the Sing Street band in the film, Duran Duran, Hall & Oates, and Adam Levine make this musical comedy drama a must see.

    Following the success of #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, users on Twitter are calling on Marvel to give Captain America A Boyfriend.

    The hashtag is so popular it has become a trending subject in the UK.

    Earlier this month Disney were called upon to give Elsa a girlfriend after many LGBTI activists said that there were not enough openly gay or lesbian lead characters in films. Reps from Disney have yet to respond to the calls but Idina Menzel, who played Elsa in the animated smash hit,  praised the campaign saying that she thought the idea was “great”.

    Many fans of the superhero franchise are suggesting that making Captain America, played by Chris Evans, gay or bisexual would not affect the character but would give greater visibility and representation to the LGBTI community in cinema.

    @elkknight
    #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend it’s 2016 and we shouldn’t be so afraid of showing different sexualities on the big screen.

    @bulkybarnes
    Can you imagine kids growing up with LGBTQ superheroes I WANT IT #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend

    @queerwitches
    #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend because it is painfully important for queer kids to know a superhero who they admire can be just like them

    @KenSergienko
    Straight people don’t realize how it hurts the soul to never see your kind of love idealized like theirs is. #giveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend

    To date no major lead character in an action hero or animated feature has been openly gay or bisexual.

    However some Twitter users have acting negatively to the idea of queering up the Captain.

    @EyeAmSMF
    Do NOT #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend Go create a NEW gay superhero, please, and give THAT one a boyfriend.

    @MiyazakiNoise
    What I’ve learned from #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend is that the homosexual community has no integrity.Rain ‏

    The Britain’s Got Talent judge, David Walliams has been criticised for ‘pretending to be gay’.

    Fans of the show took to social media to question David’s sexuality and many suggesting that David’s behaviour was offensive and insulting, when using overtly camp gestures or using homosexual innuendos for laughs.

    The comedian, who was married to Lara Stone for five years often uses attraction to men to get laughs from live audiences, but has hinted that the gender of a potential partner isn’t so important, suggesting that someone’s ‘heart and soul’ is more important than their sex.

    Comments appeared on Twitter after David became excited when contestant act Charlie Placais exposed his chest on stage. David ran after him as he attempted to leave the stage – and hugged his naked torso.

    David Walliams, whose marriage to Lara Stone ended last year hinted that he could potentially fall for either a man or a woman and has suggested that “things can change for people over the years,” during an interview with the Radio Times.

    He explained that love is about falling in love with someone’s ‘soul, heart and brain’, rather than by their gender.

    Prince Harry’s Cheeky Nipple Tweak

    To be honest we didn’t have Prince Harry down as a nipple man, but the camera doesn’t lie!

    Prince Harry, has an interesting way of giving luck to athletes – tweaking their nipples.

    Okay we don’t know if that’s an on-going thing, but it’s definitely the way that he interacted with sportsman Ashley Coles.

    Ashley Coles was about to compete in a Volleyball match for the UK against Afghanistan, in the  2016 Invictus Games, earlier this month, when he unexpectedly lifted his shirt to show the Prince his tattoo.

    That’s when the 24-year-old Prince took his chance and tweaked the right nipple of the athlete.

    Cole looks shocked by the interaction but both men laughed off the interaction. The tweaking was caught by the world’s media.

    Is This Homophobic? Butcher Advertises “No Drama Queens” Job

    A shop owner in London has been criticised for the language used in a description advert for a job in his shop.

    CREDIT: William Rose

    A butcher in London has been criticised after an advertisement for a job appeared in his window, where he asked that ‘no drama queens’ or ‘Mummy’s boys’ apply.

    William Rose, 60, said that he had advertised the job for Saturday staff  in his East Dulwich butchers for one month – but had received little interest in the position, but when he put the hand written poster in the window, he received 18 applications in one day.

    Along with no ‘Mummy’s boys’ or ‘Drama queens’ Mr Rose also doesn’t want ’emotional wrecks’ or ‘scruffs’ to apply for the shop position.

    Speaking on BBC London Mr Rose defended the advert by saying that previous potential employees had smelt of drink and had struggled to talk to customers, but that he had managed to find a suitable applicant – “a very smart young lad with a little family to keep”.

    According to Mr Rose, the advert was “just for fun” but an employment lawyer had told him that, “‘You can’t put mummy’s boys you have to put mummy’s persons’.

    The term drama queen is considered by some in the gay community as a pejorative term and highly homophobic.

    So do you think it’s homophobic or sexiest?

    And The Most Attractive British Accent Is?

    The UK has a multitude of accents from Glaswegian to Brummie. But which one has been voted the most attractive?

    Is Alan Cumming’s accent the sexiest?

    Research carried out by YouGov in April, has shown that “Scottish” accents are the most attractive in the UK, leaving RP (received pronunciation – that’s the standard British accent – think BBC newsreaders and the home counties) in second and Welsh in third. The accents were voted, 20 per cent, 18 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.

    Unfortunately for those living in the Midlands or Essex, the Brummie accent and the Towie accent didn’t place well – each received just 1 per cent of the vote.

    Far outweighing the preference was the ‘don’t knowers’ and ‘don’t carers’ – 29 per cent of whom said they couldn’t give a flying monkey’s what accent was most attractive.

    West Country 10%

    The research doesn’t expand on which Scottish or Welsh accents are the most attractive.

    Zero To Hero? Buzzfeed PhotoShops Men To Perfection

    In an experiment to show how impossible male perfection in advertising can be to achieve, Buzzfeed have Photoshopped four guys (TryGuys) into perfect 10s.

    You know how it feels. You open up a glossy and there right in front of you is male perfection. Toned, tanned and tantalizingly ten packed… Most of the time, all is not what it seems. Many advertisers, creative directors and magazines use the magic of Photoshop to touch up and tone up – even the most perfect specimen.

    Buzzfeed have documented what it takes to get to the perfect 10 – all you need is a pricey photographer, a hot shot makeup artist, expertly placed lighting and a Hogwarts rated Photoshop genius.

    Taking four examples of unachievable perfection, a Justin Bieber Calvin Klein campaign, a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo, a Men’s Health shoot and the Magic Mike poster – a small but determined team made all the TryGuys “perfect.”

  • Seychelles End Legal Ban On Gay Sex

    The Seychelles’ government have passed a bill which repeals the ban on sex between gay men.

    The Seychelles has decriminalised homosexuality in a historic move which the government hopes will lead to a growth in LGBT travellers to the region.

    The  Seychelles, which is made up of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean was part of a number of countries where homosexuality is illegal. The law, which was introduced in 1955 was a hangover from British colonial rule – although convictions were very rare, but those found guilty could be sentenced to prison for up to 14 years.

    Female same-sex relationships were not legislated against.

    Section 151 of the Penal Code read,

    Any person who –

    (a) has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature; or

    (c) permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him … against the order of nature,

    is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.

    The government signalled their intent in 2011 to remove the ban, but the penal code amendment has only just taken place, without a referendum.

    According to the Seychelles News Agency (SNA), 28 members of the National Assembly were present for the vote on Section 151’s amendment.

    Fourteen voted in favour of scrapping the homophobic law, whilst Fourteen abstained. Four members did not show for the vote.

    Parti Lepep, a representative from the ruling party said, as well as appreciating diversity in terms of race and religion, politicians also needed to fight for sexual orientation equality.

    The founder of The Seychelles’ only advocacy group for LGBTS, Fabianna Bonne,
    told SNA,

    “The loudest message that abstaining sent was that they were not going to stand in the way of this change of law happening and we at LGBTI Seychelles appreciate that,” said Bonne.

    “Our focus will now be more on educating all of our society about LGBTI as we have noted that misconceptions and negative stereotyping is very widespread on this subject. Our aim however remains full equality across all aspect of citizenship for after all, we pay our equal share of taxes and participate actively in the development of our country,”

  • David Cameron Wants To Make UK Number 1 For LGBTI People Again

    Prime Minister David Cameron has said that he wants to make Britain number 1 for LGBTI people once again.

    Photo: Crown copyright Credit: Georgina Coupe

    Speaking at an IDAHOT reception yesterday evening Prime Minster David Cameron said that he wanted to make the UK the number 1 place for LGBTI people to live again, after the UK slipped two places behind Malta and Belgium.

    Speaking to an invited audience at 10 Downing Street ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Mr Cameron said,

    “Last year, I’d have been able to say how proud I was to be Prime Minister of what was officially the best country in Europe to be gay, bisexual or transgender – but that’s no longer the case.

    “Malta has overtaken us! I don’t know quite what happened – I’ve got to get out to Malta and find out because I want this top spot back again.

    He went on to praise LGBTI community leaders and thanked them for their continuous help and for keeping up the pressure on the Conservative government on issues that affect the community at large, saying that politicians were like computers and if you put rubbish data in you’d get rubbish results out.

    The PM continued,

    “I want to thank you for all the work that you do, because in many ways politicians are a bit like computers: you don’t give us the information, we can’t act. Rubbish in, rubbish out.

    “We need quality information and quality facts, and I think we’ve showed in the Coalition government over the last five years and I hope in this majority government too that we take these issues seriously.

    “We want to solve the problems, whether it’s legislation, whether it’s practise, whether it’s culture, or whether it’s talking around the world.”
