Everything You Need To Know About Exeter Pride 2018

Exeter’s pride is celebrating its 10th year in 2018 and here’s everything you need to know about the pride event which will take place on the 12th May 2018.

The Pride’s chair, Adam Rank said,”There will be a real celebration feel this year, being our 10th anniversary, it is the perfect time to consider how far we have come since Exeter Pride began.

“We work closely with a range of partners to stage the event, including Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, the University of Exeter, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, and local businesses.

“It would not be possible without generous donations or sponsorship from local and national businesses, organisations and individuals and the fundraising efforts and assistance of many volunteers. We are currently welcoming approaches from those who would like to get involved as volunteers, have a stall or be a partner or sponsor. In addition, we are running our usual wristband scheme which offers year-long discounts at restaurants/shops etc, which makes them very desirable.”

  • Three men facing “lasting” injuries after acid attack close to gay venue in London

Three men could be facing”life-changing” injuries after a vicious acid attack outside a popular gay venue in east London.

Three victims have been left with acid burns to their bodies close to a popular gay venue in Hackney, the Metropolitan police are reporting. The Evening Standard reports that witnesses saw the three men walking away from the venue, Dalston Superstore, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at 5:20AM on Sunday morning. The three male victims aged 17, 22 and 27 years old, were taken by the London Ambulance Service to an east London hospital.

Their injuries are not life-threatening. However, at this early stage, it is still to be determined whether the injuries will be life-changing.

It is possible that more people were injured during this altercation and that footage of the incident may have been captured on mobile phones.

    “Vicious and unpleasant incident”

Detective Sergeant Quinn Cutler investigating said, “This is a particularly vicious and unpleasant incident which has left a number of people with potentially lasting injuries.

“I know that a number of people witnessed this incident and I urge those people to come forward and share their information and/or footage with police.”

The police are not currently treating this incident as a homophobic attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call Hackney CID on 07825 793 215 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

  • How gay friendly is the UK’s new Home Secretary?

With the resignation of Amber Rudd, the UK has a new Home Secretary – but how gay-friendly is Sajid Javid?

How gay friendly is the UK's new Home Secretary Sajid Javid?

As a relatively new politician, Sajid Javid has got an overall positive voting record on LGBT+ rights. He voted positively for same-sex marriage, however as we noted previously, his absenteeism on certain votes could be a cause for concern.

Despite voting positively for same-sex marriage in 2013 he didn’t attend a vote to equalise marriage laws or extend the right to marry to our armed forces or to allow our court system to deal with proceedings for the divorce of, or annulment of the marriage of, a same-sex couple.

Sajid entered the House of Parliament as an MP for Bromsgrove in 2010 when David Cameron led the Conservatives to a partial victory (after all they had to form a coalition with the Liberal Democrats in order to form a government).

He campaigned as a remainer in the EU referendum,

  • Do Gay Men Have Less Testosterone?

Testosterone can be a teste subject…. get it? It’s a popular topic of conversation amongst gay men and gym bros, and especially with gay gym bros. While there are lots of assumptions thrown about, how much actual evidence is there to suggest that gay men have less testosterone than straight men?

    Testosterone and aggression

Known as the male sex hormone, testosterone is found in higher concentrations in men than it is in women – but it’s still found in women. Higher levels of the hormone have been found to increase aggressive behaviour and so-called “masculine characteristics” such as that “take charge” attitude that’s so attractive in straight guys and so frowned upon in women (barf).

Studies in which female participants were given testosterone supplements showed an increase in these types of behaviours, however when given to men, testosterone boosters actually inhibited the natural production of the hormone, having little effect.

This means that any of those so-called testosterone supplements you might be taking in order to improve your gym performance will only inhibit your natural testosterone production, keeping your T-levels (as the lingo goes) the same.

    Testosterone makes you a man

Testosterone is quite literally what makes us men. During puberty, it’s our increasing T-levels that makes our voices break, promotes muscle growth, makes us grow body hair, and sends our poor teenage sex drives through the roof.

As an adult, testosterone also regulates important functions like sex drive, muscle and bone mass, muscle strength, fat distribution, and red blood cell production. However, there is still no conclusive evidence to claim that lower T-levels at either stage in life is what makes gay men fabulously gay.

    Adult hormonal theory

Adult hormone theory was based on the following, somewhat flawed, logic; if testosterone is responsible for driving heterosexual male sexual behaviour, it stands to reason that homosexual men must have a lower level of this hormone.

German scientist Günter Dörner (the most German-sounding name I’ve ever heard) studied this theory extensively in the 1970s, but it was the research of a neurobiologist at Columbia University, Heino Meyer-Bahlburg, that properly deflated this theory.

In 1984, a series of studies produced such underwhelming evidence to support adult hormonal theory that it was effectively discredited. While three studies did show significantly lower t-levels in homosexual men, two studies reported higher t-levels in gay men than in straight men – with another unhelpfully showing the levels to be higher in bisexuals than in either gay or straight men.

All in all, there is still no real evidence to suggest that gay men have lower testosterone levels.

Gay men don’t want to build muscle… do they?

In researching this article I came across several fitness “experts” that still managed to shock me with how little they knew about gay men. Some even suggested that, as gay men, our fitness goals would probably be the same as women, wanting only to be lean and skinny rather than putting on muscle.

    … barf.

Lower testosterone levels in all men

Due to the ever-changing environment we live in, it has been shown that testosterone levels as a whole are falling across the board, with straight men and gay men alike showing around 60% less testosterone in their system than our grandfathers had 60 years ago. Add to that the fact that most men’s t-levels start to drop by about 2% a year by the time they reach their 40s, testosterone is in short supply with all men, whether gay, straight, or unicorn.

  • Everything You Need To Know About York Pride 2018

If you’re planning to go to York pride here’s everything you need to know before the 2018 event.

Everything You Need To Know About York Pride 2018
This year’s York Pride takes place on the on Saturday 9th June and to celebrate the diversity of the LGBT+ community the theme for 2018 is Flag it Up.
Speaking about the theme, Greg Stephenson York Pride’s chair said, “We decided on Flag it Up as our theme as it addresses several areas that are important to York Pride. It can mean showing support for the LGBT+ community by visually demonstrating your solidarity. Businesses, charities, and other organisations across the city fly the Pride flag every year, and we wanted to thank people for doing so as well as give the opportunity for those who haven’t so far to get involved. It also allows us to encourage people to challenge inappropriate behaviour. The last year has seen more and more cases of LGBT-phobia being revealed through the media and the increase in public discourse on the subject, and our theme enables us to support people in showing solidarity by ‘flagging up’ any discrimination they witness. We work closely with the public services in York and we wanted to make sure that people are aware that there are various forms of support that they can access should they need it.”

  • DJ Avicii dies aged, 28

DJ Avicii, born, Tim Bergling has died at the age of 28, his publicist has confirmed.

    Was avicii gay?

The 28-year-old Swedish-born producer, who worked with the likes of Madonna, Rita Ora and Leona Lewis died in Oman, his publicist, Diana Baron announced today.

In a statement, Baron said, “The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time.”

Avicii’s anthems include “Wake Me Up”, “Hey Brother”, and most recently, “Lonely Together” with Rita Ora.

Avicii once joked that he was gay on Twitter saying,  “Im not gay, my boyfriend is!” in 2015.

Speaking about performing for gay crowds and gay rights in 2013 he told Gay San Diego magazine,

“I have family and friends that are gay and it’s an important issue for me. I grew up in Sweden. So it’s really not that much of an issue in Sweden the same way it is for gay marriage in America. Even within the society in general, at least from what I feel growing up.

“I’ve never had any friends being homophobic or never even heard any parents being homophobic. I’ve never even seen that. But in America, you still see homophobia. It’s getting better but you can tell that it still exists.”

The cause of his death has not been revealed, but he was active on social media up until just three days ago.

In 2014 he had both his appendix and gallbladder removed.
