  • Man who touched another man’s hip in Dubai sentenced to 3 months in Prison

The man who brushed up against another man in a Dubai bar, in an attempt to protect against drink spillage has been sentenced to 3 months in Dubai.

Jamie Harron from Stirling in central Scotland has today been imprisoned for 3 months following the complaints that Mr Harron had touched another man’s hip at a bar in Dubai.

In fighting his case, Mr Harron has lost his job and spent in excess of £30,000 on his legal defence.

Jamie was in Dubai, with a friend, on a two-day stopover from Afghanistan, where he worked as an electrician.  Mr Harron claimed that he was trying to ensure that a drink he was holding did not spill on himself or others. He touched the other man’s hip in order to avoid an impact. He was arrested for public indecency and his passport was seized but authorities. In fighting his case, Jamie has spent in excess of £30,000 in legal fees. He has spent all of his savings and spent £12,000 on credit cards.

According to Detained In Dubai, leading experts in Middle Eastern Law, Mr Harron has yet to be sentenced for two other charges stemming from the case; that of consuming alcohol, and for allegedly making a rude gesture against Mr Tabaza.

He was previously sentenced to 30 days in prison for failing to appear at a court hearing the date of which he had not been notified of in advance.

    Life in tatters

He has already spent several months stranded in the UAE over this case, lost his job, and is in danger of losing his home as he struggles to pay legal expenses.

Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, commented, “Now Jamie has been sentenced to 3 months; there is no telling whether a judgment on appeal will be better or worse. He has already suffered tremendously as a result of these allegations, and now faces the likelihood of incarceration. His family was unable to visit him during this critical time because they faced a very real risk of imprisonment themselves under the UAE’s cybercrime laws which forbid criticism of the government.

“At this point, Jamie will definitely be pursuing civil action against his accusers when he does eventually return home, as it appears that he will not be able to find justice in the UAE.”

Mr Harron, she said, is understandably distraught.

“He is angry, disappointed, and dreads what may happen next. He feels betrayed and exploited by the system, which did not investigate the reports of key witnesses in his defence and led him to believe that the case would be dropped. He can’t understand why a company like Neuman & Esser came out so publicly to repeat the defamatory allegations of Mr Tabaza, and he is intent on pursuing further legal action.”

Though the German company that employs Mr Tabaza, Neuman & Esser, claims that Tabaza sought to dismiss the case in August, Detained In Dubai says there is no documentation to support this, and Mr Tabaza has never appeared in court to request a dismissal.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said, “We have been in contact with a British man following his arrest in Dubai in July. We are providing consular assistance.”

  • Prostate Cancer UK opens online support group for gay and bisexual men

Prostate Cancer UK has teamed up with Opening Doors London to trial a new online discussion group for gay and bisexual men who have been affected by prostate cancer. The online discussion group will provide men with the opportunity to discuss any subject or concerns about prostate cancer and offer support.

The first session was held last night (18 October at 7pm) and was facilitated by Opening Doors London, the largest charity for older people in the LGBT community in the UK. Sessions will take place for an hour on the third Thursday of every month for the trial period (6 months) and will be accessible from a computer, tablet or phone. Participants can choose to dial in by video or by audio only, if they prefer not to be seen on screen. Additionally, men can join anonymously should they wish.

Currently, 1 man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer – that’s more than 11,000 men in the UK each year. This makes tackling prostate cancer through research, campaigning and providing support crucially important. Tailoring information and services to different areas of the community also plays a key role in tackling this disease.

Martin Wells, 63 from Burnley, is a gay man who was diagnosed with localised prostate cancer in 2007. He said: “Going through prostate cancer and the side effects of treatment really affected me psychologically. I desperately needed emotional support to help me get through this difficult time and there weren’t any services near me that focused on psychosexual health. The fact there is not tailored support for men like me in every area of the country, encouraged me to set up my own support groups. Talking to other men who could speak to me on my terms felt incredible. That’s why Prostate Cancer UK’s new online discussion group is a great opportunity for gay, bisexual men and MSM to come together and discuss any topics on prostate cancer without judgement, wherever they live. I would encourage anyone who has any concerns or needs support to join up and share how they feel.

Ann Innes, Support Group Development Manager at Prostate Cancer UK explains, “We know that people find a great deal of help and support in dealing with prostate cancer from being able to talk to others about shared experiences and problems. Although there are many prostate cancer support groups around the UK, we know that some gay and bisexual men may not feel comfortable about discussing some of their concerns or asking certain types of questions in these groups. So we wanted to offer an alternative for people who would like to speak to others with similar experiences but who for whatever reason could not or do not want to utilise a face to face group. We hope to see this unique support group develop into a key trusted resource for these men going forward.”

Professor Jeffery Weeks, Chair of ODL trustees said, “Opening Doors London is delighted to be working in partnership with Prostate Cancer UK in the development of an important new service. This online support group for gay men living with prostate cancer will provide new opportunities to challenge taboos and anxieties and to develop mutual support, confidence and knowledge.”

The next session will take place on 16th November 2018

  • Realty star Mychael Knight dies, 39

  • PrEP ‘will save money in the long run’ says leading HIV charity

A new report out today says that the HIV prevention treatment, PrEP would be “cost-effective” and could save the NHS money in the long run.

The Lancet Infectious Diseases published a report today that states PrEP would be cost-effective. It also says that when used properly, PrEP could prevent one in four new infections of HIV.

Many opponents of PrEP have claimed that the medication, which is offered to high-risk groups, including gay and bisexual men, at risk of contracting HIV, is too expensive for the NHS to fully embrace.

Doctor Michael Brady, Medical Director at Terrence Higgins Trust has welcomed the report saying,

“One of the key arguments against PrEP has been that it will cost the NHS too much money. This study firmly puts that claim to bed by demonstrating that, when appropriately targeted at those at risk of HIV, it is not only highly cost-effective but, as the price of HIV drugs falls, will actually save the NHS money in the long run. Each HIV infection we prevent saves the NHS £360,000 of a lifetime of treatment and care.

“The study also highlights the importance of cheaper, generic versions of PrEP, which are currently being used in NHS England’s PrEP Impact trial and have been commissioned for PrEP use in Scotland.

“This cost-effectiveness data underlines the importance of PrEP in the fight against HIV. It is not only highly clinically effective it is also cost-effective. The NHS England Impact trial, which will provide access to PrEP for 10,000 people over the next 3 years, is a welcome step in the right direction. However, it is important that all who need PrEP can access it and evidence like this reinforces the need for PrEP to be fully commissioned and given a long-term, sustainable home on the NHS in England.”

  • Gay man beaten in Chechen blood soaked prison cell speaks out about his ordeal

The first victim to speak out publicly about his treatment by Chechen authorities has revealed shocking details about his treatment.

Maxim Lapunov, a gay man living Chechnya held a press conference to reveal the stark and shocking details surrounding his detention and imprisonment by Chechen police. He is the first victim to publicly reveal details since the plight of gay and bisexual men in the Muslim majority region made headlines in March 2017.

Revealing details about his detention, he says he was captured in the street by men in plain clothes and taken to a police station, where he was imprisoned for 12 days. During his stay, he alleges that he was physically beaten and given death threats. He told the press conference that he was beaten with sticks until he collapsed.

He said,  “The main accusation against me was that I’m gay.” The police “would shout that I’m gay, that people like me should be killed.”

Fresh blood on the cell floor

Speaking about the confines he was detained in, Lapunov described the cell as having fresh blood on the floor.

“The cell was around two by two metres and about a quarter of the floor was just covered in blood — it was quite fresh blood,”

During his stay, Lapunov said that the police beat him with sticks for “a very long time”.

He said, “they hit me on the calves, they put my face to a wall and beat me on the legs, thighs, buttocks and back, until I started to fall.”

The country’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov stated in April that he wanted all gay people to be eliminated by the start of Ramadan.

According to a Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta,  men, suspected of being gay, disappeared overnight in the Russian Republic of Chechnya. Previously a spokesperson for the leader of the Republic denied the reports and claimed that gay people did not exist in the region.

  • The Black Cap is looking for new bosses

The reopening of The Black Cap is moving ever closer as new bosses are sought to take over the iconic North London gay venue.

The Black Cap in North London could be re-opening soon, as long as new bosses can be found for the venue. The owners of the venue, Kicking Horse,  have agreed to look for new tenants in order to re-open after it closed two and half years ago.

Black Cap Foundation, the community campaign group set up to reopen the venue, has been working with the freeholders of the Black Cap site,  to finalise the property and business details.

However prospective owners will have to prove that they are financially viable and stable before they can even have a walk through the building and it’s not cheap. Paperwork for the venue shows that a “significant amount of capital investment” in the region of £900,000 will need to be spent on the venue because it has been closed for such a long time.

The leaseholders are looking for a whopping yearly rental of £300,000 for the venue which has a prime location near to Camden market, the tube line and the high street.

Black Cap Foundation director Alex Green said,  “We’re thrilled at this agreement. This is a crucial step towards our goal of reopening the Black Cap, and we welcome the cooperation of the freeholders and the support of Camden council and the GLA in making that a reality.

“We’ve always believed the Black Cap’s unique, irreplaceable legacy of community and culture is worth fighting for, and can’t wait to see how it will be reinvented next.”

A spokesperson for Kicking Horse said, “We very much hope to find the leaseholder with the right vision, experience and resources to begin a brand new chapter for this world-famous venue.”

Interested parties are encouraged to contact Alex Green/Chris Clark of the Black Cap Foundation on enquiries@weareblackcap.com and Paul Tallentyre of David Coffer Lyons sales agent on ptallentyre@dcl.co.uk for further details.
