Amazon halves the price of its Echo for Black Friday

Amazon has stripped back the price of many of its amazing Alexa products including the Fire Stick and Echo Dot for Black Friday 2019.

Amazon has slashed the price of quite a few of its Echo devices and Amazon Fire TV Stick meaning you can now get an Echo Dot for £22.00 (the cheapest we’ve ever seen it), usually priced at £49.99 while you can get an Echo Show for just £49.999 down from £79.99.

You could even get the Echo Smart speaker in Charcoal Fabric for just £59.99 and that includes delievery.

All of these deals are featured on the Amazon website thanks to this year’s Black Friday event, which Amazon has stretched out to an entire wekk.

By ordering a Fire TV Stick and signing up to Prime, you’ll be able to access thousands of films and TV shows, including the huge array of LGBT+ films and TV shows Amazon Prime currently offers.

The Echo devices are Amazon’s popular voice-controlled speakers or TV screens, with improved sound and audio detection over the previous versions of the device. They allow you to stream music, tv shows and even call, for free, anyone else with another Echo device.

You can even use the clever Echo system to turn on and off lights, adjust thermostats, lock doors, find TV shows, and more with compatible connected devices

  • The UK’s porn block has been cancelled

    ©-lofilolo-Depositphotos

The government’s plan to block porn UK users who hadn’t signed up to an age verifying database has been scrapped.

According to the Digital Secretary, Nicky Morgan, the controversial policy will not be commencing.

The confirmation comes after the policy had been blocked a number of times.

The original policy would have required users to register on porn sites with official documents such as a driver’s license, passport or an age verification card.

The policy had raised concerned by privacy activists who warned that any database that contained personal information or that tracked people’s browsing online could be hacked or used by the government to track people’s most private moments.

Advocates of the policy said that it would protect children from accessing porn online.

In a written statement to parliament, Morgan said that the government would heighten its focus on its new “online harms” regulation to address issues caused by minors accessing porn sites.

She wrote, “The government’s commitment to protecting children online is unwavering. Adult content is too easily accessed online and more needs to be done to protect children from harm”.

Grindr is getting sold back to the Americans

The US has demanded that Grindr be sold back to a US firm amid security concerns.

Grindr is to be sold back to a US firm.

In 2018 a majority stake in the world’s most popular gay hookup app was sold to a Chinese gaming firm in a deal that was worth nearly $100 million. However, the firm that sought to buy the firm, Kunlun Tech is going to auction off its stake by mid-2020.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US ruled that the treasure trove of data held by Grindr would be a concern for the national security of the United States and is effectively forcing the sale of the company back to a US company. The ruling from the Committee on Foreign Investment also ordered that the firm cannot share any data harvested from the app.

If no buyer is found the company will be forced to give over the app to a trustee.

Last year Grindr came under fire after it was revealed that the new CEO, Scott Chen was a heterosexual man, who seemingly took an anti-gay marriage stance.

Scott Chen, wrote, in a deleted (but later reinstated) social media message that it was his belief that marriage should be between and man and a woman.

He said, “There are people who believe that marriage is a holy matrimony between a man and a woman. I agree but that’s none of our business. There are also people who believe that the purpose of marriage is to create children that carry their DNA. That’s also none of our business. There are people that are simply different from you, who desperately want to get married. They have their own reasons.”

Earlier this year Grindr closed its online magazine, Into, which at the time was the world’s most read LGBT+ media brand. It went, according to SimliarWeb, from over 7.5 million unique readers in December 2018 to just over 300,000 last month.

  • Gay dating app, Growlr just got sold for a lot of $$$s

Gay dating app, Growlr just got sold for a lot of $$$s

    GROWLr just got sold Y’all!

GROWLr has become the latest dating app, aimed at gay and bi men to be sold, and it was sold for some big $$$s!

Although the amount paid for it is dwarfed by the amount paid by a Chinese gaming firm for Grindr, the buyers still parted with nearly $12,000,000 ($11.8m) for GROWLr and that’s not to be sniffed at. This also means the app is no longer gay-owned or operated and becomes an “acquired property” of the much larger company, The Meet Group.

Currently, GROWLr has around 10 million users of which 200,000 of them use the app daily.

Speaking about the acquisition, Geoff Cook, the CEO of The Meet Group, said, “In addition to reporting a strong quarter, I’m excited to announce the acquisition of Growlr, which provides a meaningful step into the large same-sex dating market and expands the base of users to whom we can deliver our live video product,

“We are thrilled to add Growlr to The Meet Group portfolio,” said Cook.

“Similar to what we have done with our other acquired properties, we plan to be aggressive in bringing our video model to Growlr. We expect to begin rolling out live video on Growlr in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“We also see opportunities to grow advertising revenue on the app, and we plan to further invest in user acquisition to expand brand awareness and reach.”

  • So much emoji diversity is coming your way

So much emoji diversity is coming your way

Interracial couples are now going to get the inclusion they deserve.

    smartphones
This autumn, interracial couples will be included in an emoji update which sees all different types of races of couples included, and will be available on all smartphones. The new emojis feature same-sex couples as well as opposite couples and has 12 different permutations.

Behind this great news is one of the world’s biggest dating apps, Tinder, which told THEGAYUK, “Tinder advocates for the freedom of people to live how they want to live and love who they want to love,” said Jenny Campbell, CMO, Tinder.

“The success of our Interracial Couple Emoji campaign shows how powerful the voices are of the more than 50,000 people who joined our cause by signing our petition; together, we effected change and ensured visual representation for interracial couples around the world. I couldn’t be more proud of this incredibly positive outcome.”

  • Twitter could be adding this amazing feature to combat bullying

Twitter could be adding this amazing feature to combat bullying

Twitter could be adding this one feature that will help combat cyberbullying.

    PhotoMIX-Company / Pixabay

THEGAYUK has learned that Twitter could be adding a “hide replies” feature. An innovation that could help anyone who is the target of online or cyberbullying remove hateful messages without deleting crucial evidence for the police.

Twitter, for many, has become a toxic battleground and where cyberbullying is rife. In 2018 THEGAYUK discovered that anti-gay and homophobic slurs were racking up in their millions on the platform. Just before Donald Trump’s win as President in the 2016 US Election, Twitter saw a surge in the word “f*ggot”.

A hide feature would help users control what they see and when they see it. It could work very similarly to the Turn Off Comments function on YouTube.

It could also allow the primary user to help control the conversation, remove falsehoods or hate from their timeline, before other users jump in on a thread.

Twitter has recently rolled out a number of schemes to help detoxify the app.

In 2018 it said it would ban deadnaming and misgendering for trans people.

It’s not clear if and when this feature will be rolled out.

  • TECH REVIEW | Zumo 396 LMT-S Sat Nav

TECH REVIEW | Zumo 396 LMT-S Sat Nav

    ★★★★★ | Zumo 396 LMT-S Sat Nav

These days, most of the cars I drive have factory SatNav. If not, I’ll use my Google maps on my phone in a holder, simples.

On the bike, I have persevered for ages, trying to strap my phone to a holder or, if it looks like rain, stopping regularly to check google maps on my phone then carrying on for a bit.

On the bike, I had to say enough was enough. The phone doesn’t work in the sun, isn’t waterproof and just isn’t practical. Time for a dedicated SatNav.

Garmin came to the rescue with the devices a rugged unit, comes complete with bar mounts (and suction mount for the car) and it has a glove-friendly, sunlight-readable 4.3″ display; resistant to fuel vapours, UV rays and harsh weather.

It’s rammed with features like WiFi updating, adventurous routing (forget boring A road slogs), live traffic, speed cameras and weather, as well as on-screen notifications from your phone and hands-free calling if you connect it to your Bluetooth headset. You get free lifetime maps too.

This Garmin is a genuinely clever bit of kit. To really turbocharge it you need to connect it to an app on your phone (doesn’t use much data at all) and then you get live traffic updates and re-routing options, notifications for sharp curves, speed cameras, rail and animal crossings, schools and slower traffic and even Incident notification (to alert the contact of your choice in the event of a crash by sending them a link to your location). Now that’s clever.

The more I use it, the more features I discover, like the fatigue warning that flashes up after a couple of hours, offering you suggested stops nearby.

There’s a TripAdvisor app for ratings of nearby restaurants, hotels etc and a Foursquare app for a list of restaurants and things to do nearby, I don’t really use that much but it’s a pretty good feature.

You can mount the unit easily with the supplied bar mount and brackets.

It has a decent battery: A full charge seems to last for about an hour and a half, then dims to 40% brightness and it’s around 3 hours in total until it turns off. You can, however, either hardwire it with the kit supplied (direct to battery or ignition) or plug it into a USB type 12v charging socket. The satnav simply clips to a spring-loaded holder so it’s really easy to unclip it from the bike when you’re at your destination.

The sidebar is fully customisable. Smart notifications can include alerts of emails, missed calls, SMS, WhatsApp, social media and more. Even things like elevation, traffic and other items like fuel stops ahead, trip data, weather (it’ll show you the expected weather at three points along your planned route), phone and the media player.

You can select what categories of alerts are shown, or turn them off altogether vid the apps menu.

The Zumo 396 LMT-S has car, motorcycle and off-road profiles. These affect the default route planning, map view, tools displayed, avoidances and off-route recalculation modes.

Stopping to check my phone has been a massive pain in the arse. I have to keep taking a glove off to get the touch screen to work. One of my favourite things on the Garmin is the touch screen.  It works with a gloved hand… bliss. I’m sure others have it but it’s such a relief.

The Garmin Zumo 369 LMT-S seems to be very well sealed from the weather, I haven’t had an issue yet and have been out in pretty heavy rain.

Navigation is really good. That’s what this is about after all. The top bar shows information about the upcoming turn and distance, that kind of thing. There’s a clear map which you can change to suit you, and as you approach your exit, a clear illustration of your motorway junctions makes it easy to understand which lane to be in. Positioning accuracy is great and it doesn’t seem to lag much at all.

I’ve been running the Garmin Zumo 369 LMT-S in my car next to Google maps on my phone as a comparison.

I think Google Maps is slightly better when suggesting the best route and rerouting around traffic or issues. Google just seems to have slightly better information. Only slightly though and that’s more than offset by the myriad of awesome features on the Zumo.

The other main benefit I find with Google Maps is the address search. I visit customers all week. That means I don’t always know their address. With Google, I search up the business name and usually just click ‘directions’, which ports that info into Maps. Most aftermarket SatNavs I’ve used, including this Zumo (unless I’m doing it wrong), don’t have a great business name or address directory function.

In my opinion, this is a great unit. It’s bike specific, waterproof, touch screen you can use with a gloved hand and can see it in daylight and all the other cool features.

I really like it. It’s made a massive difference to my riding.

Available from Amazon for under £60
