What data has been compromised by the Jack’d bug?

According to sources, the gay dating and hook up app, Jack’d has got a bug which is allowing people to access private data. Here’s what is at risk.

As the Register announced on Tuesday, anybody with an internet browser can get access to Jack’d’s user’s photographs, regardless of whether they are set to private or whether they have been shared or not.

The app, which has been downloaded over 100,000 times and boasts hundreds of thousands of users, gives gay and bi men a chance to talk each other up, trade private and open pics, and orchestrate meetings.

“Known about the security concerns for several months”

The Register says that the app’s creators have known about the security concerns for several months.

There is no requirement for users looking to get access to private data to prove their right to access or even agree to accept the application’s terms of use.

Jack’d says the application has five million customers in nations around the globe.

Mark Girolamo, chief executive of Jack’d parent company Online Buddies said, “Our tech team is aware of the photo vulnerability and has already programmed the changes for this fix.

“They will deploy the fix this Thursday, February 7.”

    Users at risk

Users who may not be out to their families or co-workers chance having their sexuality uncovered, while the bug puts users in danger of torment or blackmail by potential abusers.

    Delete data until the fix

San Francisco-based reporter Sean Nichols writes: “The app should place strict access restrictions on which images should be viewable so that if one user allows another user to see a [picture], only the receiver should be allowed to see it.”

Nichols recommends users may want to remove their private photos until the fix has been implemented.

  • Why are so many sites now banning adult content?

Why are so many sites now banning adult content?

With the announcement of Facebook’s new sexual content policy, we look at other internet platforms that have banned adult content.

It was revealed last month that Facebook’s new sexual solicitation policy was hitting right at the heart of sexual interactions between people. Many critics believe that the move will hurt the LGBT+ community the most with the shocking revelation that people will no longer be able to discuss their preferred sexual roles, such as whether they are tops or bottoms.
    [expander_maker]

    But Facebook isn’t the first.

Scruff, the gay dating app has had to ban various photos from being shown as profile pictures, including any pictures of guys in jockstraps, pictures with pubic hair on show or pictures which are sexual in nature.

Grindr, also operates a similar photo policy.

Instagram Users have long blasted the service for deleting their content. In 2018 gay pin-up magazine Meat‘s account was deleted twice, various celebs have hit out saying that the Facebook-owned entity had banned or blocked content.

Tumblr Earlier in December blogging site, Tumblr announced that it was going to remove all adult content. It is believed that Apple forced the company to make the policy when it temporarily kicked the blogging site from its app store.

Starbucks Also in December coffeeshop chain, Starbucks said that it had “identified a solution to prevent” porn from being viewed on its WIFI systems. It said would start blocking all sites from 2019.

Craigslist shut down its personals listings, 2018 after US Congress passed a Sex Trafficking Bill. The personals had run since 1995. The Bill could subject websites found to be unknowingly hosting ads for sex trafficking to criminal and civil liabilities. As a result, Craigslist made the decision to remove all the personals from its site, saying, “Any tool or service can be misused. We can’t take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking craigslist personals offline”.

Google Drive Sex workers have allegedly seen files deleted or removed from their Google Drives. Numerous adult performers and sex workers have found that content hosted on Google Drive was no longer accessible. The service does have a policy which bans the hosting of “sexually explicit or pornographic images or videos”.

Patreon, a payment collection site for content creators starting banning adult performers because its payment partners, Stripe and PayPal were refusing service.

Reddit has banned all sex-work groups and in 2007 LiveJournal made headlines after removing a picture of a mother breastfeeding saying it went against their content policy.

  • Here’s how you can protect yourself from online shopping scams, from an ex scammer

Here’s how you can protect yourself from online shopping scams, from an ex scammer

According to research, 15,000 shoppers were conned out of more than £11 million over the Christmas period.

    (C) DEPOSITPHOTOS

Here’s how you can fight back against online scams, as ex-scammers reveals some of their tricks

    1. Look out for the padlock on websites. The padlock symbol next to the website’s address is a clear indication that this website is secure, and you can trust that if you put your bank details in, they will be safe. If there isn’t a padlock on a site, don’t put your bank details in.

    2. Fake online shops. Fake online shops are common. The best thing to do is to look for online reviews of the site and if possible, find a contact number and give them a call. If there’s no number, it could be a sign that the site isn’t legitimate.

    3. Fake emails. There are loads of fake emails out there and most of the time, you can recognise them instantly. However, scammers are getting smarter and they’ll make the email look like it’s coming from a legitimate company called ‘spoofing’ by putting the company’s name in the email and branding to deceive the recipient into clicking on a link in the email.

The best thing to do in this situation is to find the help email on the genuine website and email asking if it’s from them. If it’s not, mark it as spam, block the sender and delete it.

    4. Beware of auction sites. On auction sites, like eBay, scammers will claim they’re selling something but in reality, they have nothing to sell and will just take your money. To prevent this, you should look at the seller’s reviews and see the feedback they’ve had. If they have poor or no feedback, avoid that seller.

    5. Phishing emails. Phishing emails will focus on tricking you into visiting fake websites and entering personal information or bank details. If an email comes in from an email address you don’t recognise, Google it and see if anyone else has had a similar email from them. If you don’t trust the email, don’t click on anything and just delete it and block them.

The UK’s leading cloud distributor has worked with ex-scammers to create a guide on how to protect yourself from online scams in the January sales.

intY has teamed up with three former scammers to create a comprehensive guide to helping to protect consumers from online scams. Statistics from Action Fraud show that over the Christmas period last year, more than 15,000 shoppers were conned out of more than £11 million. There’s also research that shows that consumers have spent more than £650,000 on online shopping last year.

    ntY CEO, Craig Joseph, said,

“The January sales mean that there are loads of bargains out there, especially online. However, this also means that at this time of year people will take advantage of this mentality of cheap deals in January.

“We partner with vendors who supply security services so that people can shop safely online, and these sales have increased recently due to an increasing awareness of online scams. Since seeing this increase, we decided to team up with ex-scammers to ensure people are staying safe online this year, hopefully it makes people more aware of the type of scams there are and how to avoid falling victim to them.”

The radicals are described as social justice warriors, radical feminists, radical LGBT militants, illegal aliens, terrorists, doctors, socialist politicians and a “radical frenzied NON-BINARY, GENDER FLUID pansexual humanoid berserker”.

    The Killers

Players have a host of killers they can play as. The game’s creators deny that the characters are based on real-life people.

    The Creators

The game has been created by four people, who are largely anonymised or known solely by their first names. “John” who financed the game says he’s “Christian first, Republican second and is “no stranger to the old “elbow-grease”.

“Anon” is  “A man dismayed at the overwhelming political correctness engulfing the USA and the rest of the world, he now fuels his rage into the development of JSB”

“Anon 2” is “An anonymous European Union resident. The anguish he feels at the EU suppressing his free speech rights drove him to work on JSB”

“Edge” is described as  “a retired full-time edgelord before joining the JSB: JD team. He has seen some edgy things in his time and  now manages the edge factor of JSB”

    Support by PayPal dropped

Supporters were previously reminded that they could donate by PayPal in order to help pay for the game to be financed. Supporters were able to make monthly or one-off payments.

THEGAYUK.com reached out to PayPal for comment who told us there were “looking into it, however won’t be able to comment further due to customer confidentiality”.

PayPal has now pulled the ability to use their platform to support his game.

  • This is how to find out if your passwords have been hacked

This is how to find out if your passwords have been hacked

It’s always good to check and see if your email address has been hacked.

    fancycrave1 / Pixabay

If you’ve received a sextortion email, that’s where an extortionist claims to have damning or embarrassing footage of you, and will only delete it once you hand over bitcoin or other digital currency to an untraceable account, you might want to see if your email or your passwords have been hacked.

It can be quite concerning if you receive a threatening email from an unknown source who claims to have your details and potentially compromising footage of you.

There are a couple of things you should do, first, it might be a good idea to install anti-virus software on your computer. Then you should check to see if any of your email addresses have been compromised. There have been some massive data leaks in recent years, from companies you might not even realise had your data.

For instance Apollo, a sales engagement startup had an enormous data breach in July 2018 where 125 million email and other sensitive data was leaked. Dropbox had a breach in mid-2012 where tens of millions of accounts were leaked. LinkedIn had one in May 2016, Tumblr had one in 2013  and MySpace had one in 2008.

To find out if you’ve been hacked or had your data harvested you should try out Have I Been Pwned. Pwned is another word that means Owned.

It’s a website that keeps track of data breaches and has a database of every email that’s ever been leaked. It also has a handy “Notify Me” feature which will let you know if your data is ever hacked in the future – and it’s free.

Whatever you do, you shouldn’t send money to anyone who claims to have damning footage. It is most likely a spam message and the person really doesn’t have footage of you.

If you are really concerned you should reach out to the police and report it.

Horrifying computer game sees JESUS murder gay people on the streets

A brand new video game sees a variety of right-wing figures, as well as Jesus, slashing, gunning-down and murdering LGBT+ people in the streets.

The computer game, called, Jesus Strikes Back, which is set to be released in 2019 is essentially a shoot-em-up “zombie” computer game in which the objective is to kill gay, trans, non-binary as well as other social justice campaigners people in the streets.

The game is due to be launched in just over a month. Although there is no mention of what platform the game is for or by which method people will be able to obtain the game.

Capital cities include, Washington D.C, London, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Moscow and Jerusalem.

In the game, it seems as though the player can throw victims off buildings echoing the horrendous means by which ISIS fighters have executed gay men in Iraq and Syria.

  • Facebook’s new ban on mentioning sexual roles and preferences are “horrifying”

Facebook’s new ban on mentioning sexual roles and preferences are “horrifying”

Facebook has taken aim at the information you can share about yourself on its platform.

    (C) BIGSTOCK

In a new policy move, Facebook has banned a raft of sexual details which you are no longer able to discuss about yourself on the platform. The policy which is named the “sexual solicitation” policy has been branded as “horrifying” by critics and it could adversely effect LGBT+ users on the platform.

The policy could potentially ban gay, bisexual and transgender users from discussing whether they are top or bottoms on the site as it seeks to ban “sexual hints such as (the) mention of sexual roles, positions or fetish scenarios”.

The platform says it is now “drawing a line” when any conversation leads to a “sexual encounter between adults”.

No nudes, no positions, no roles

It will also ban users from sending nude pictures to each other as the policy specifically bans “offering or asking for nude images”.

Facebook’s community standards says, “Do not post content that engages in implicit sexual solicitation, which can be identified by… using sexual hints such as mentioning sexual roles, sex positions, fetish scenarios, sexual preference/sexual partner preference, state of arousal, act of sexual intercourse or activity (sexual penetration or self-pleasuring), commonly sexualized areas of the body such as the breasts, groin, or buttocks, state of hygiene of genitalia or buttocks.”

The policy change comes just a day after blogging site Tumblr said it was going to remove all adult content from its site.

Global community is sensitive to this kind of content

One of the reasons Facebook has decided on the changes is because it says some in its “global community” may find the content “sensitive”. It also said that some users might find it hard to connect with their “friends and the broader community”.

Looking for a “good time” go somewhere else

    (C) BIGSTOCK

Facebook is also banning suggestive elements such as saying that you’re “looking for a good time tonight”, you’ll also fall foul of the ban if you mention “sexual roles, sex positions, fetish scenarios, sexual preference/sexual partner preference, state of arousal, act of sexual intercourse or activity (sexual penetration or self-pleasuring), commonly sexualised areas of the body such as the breasts, groin or buttocks, state of hygiene of genitalia or buttocks”

Grindr president confirms committed to LGBT+ equality

Following on a statement in which Grindr’s CEO said he believed that marriage should be between a man and woman, the straight, cis-gender, married man released a statement.

    CREDIT: Ryazan / BIGSTOCK

Scott Chen, who is married to a woman, wrote, in a deleted (but later reinstated) social media message that it was his belief that marriage should be between and man and a woman.

The story, interestingly was first reported by the Grindr-owned digital magazineIntoMore, who have received a new statement from Chen, which said,

“On November 26, I wrote a post on my personal Facebook account meant to condemn those advocating against same-sex marriage in Taiwan. The words I chose related to marriage between a man and a woman were meant to express my personal feelings about my own marriage to my wife – not to suggest that I am opposed to marriage equality.

I want to make clear that I am an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and have been since I was young. I support gay marriage and I am proud that I can work for Grindr. I apologize that my words did not clearly convey these feelings.

I am very proud of the work INTO does and stand by them as an important part of our business.

One of our greatest strengths at Grindr is our diverse team and our respect for one another. Together, we will continue the important work we do fighting for LGBTQ+ equality.”

    No longer under gay ownership

Despite its gay beginnings, the Grindr app was snapped up by a Chinese gaming app in January 2018.
