Why did it take Anthony Rapp so long to make allegations against Kevin Spacey?

According to the report in Buzzfeed, Rapp had once approached a lawyer to discuss legal action against Spacey, but was told it was not a case worth pursuing. He also stated that because of the accusations levied against Harvey Weinstein that he was “really awake to the moment that we’re living in”.

The Hollywood actor, Kevin Spacey has come out as gay in a social media post, following on from allegations of historic ‘sexual advances’ on a teenage actor.

House Of Cards actor Kevin Spacey has come out following allegations from Star Trek Discovery actor, Anthony Rapp that the actor made “sexual advances” towards him when he a teenager. Reacting to the allegations, Spacey said, that he did not remember the encounter but owed Rapp a sincere apology.

The allegation dates back to 1986 when Spacey allegedly befriended Rapp whilst the teenager was performing along with Ed Harris in the Broadway show, Precious Sons. Rapp revealed to Buzzfeed that he was 14 at the time Spacey was 26.

Rapp who is now 46, told Buzzfeed that he joined Spacey for a party at his Manhattan apartment saying that he was the only non-adult at the party and soon got bored. After a while, Rapp said that he wandered into the bedroom, watched TV until well past midnight. He then alleges that Spacey was standing at the bedroom door and that everyone else had left the party.

Rapp said, that Spacey picked him up “like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold”. He continues, “But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me.”

    “Inappropriate drunken behaviour”

Spacey, who has 4.92 million followers on Twitter,  responded to the report on Twitter saying,

I’m beyond horrified to hear this story, I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.

“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are other stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy,

“As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life and I choose now to live as a gay man,

“I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”

    Taking to Twitter, Rapp said,

“I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me.

“Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time”.

Both Rapp and Spacey now star in Netflix shows, Star Trek: Discovery and House Of Cards, respectively. It is unclear what, if any actions Netflix will take on either of their shows.

  • Which characters are gay in Star Trek: Discovery?

Netflix’s new sci-fi offering is Star Trek Discovery and it’s pretty groundbreaking with its representation of minorities in media  – and includes the introduction of a gay couple.

Which characters are gay in Star Trek: Discovery?

The introduction of gay characters in the mainstream Star Trek universe is a relatively new idea – there was the introduction of Hikaru Sulu’s partner and daughter in the film Star Trek: Beyond, although it was a glancing scene – which didn’t expand on their story.

Star Trek: Discovery has changed this by putting two guys, in prominent roles, into a relationship with each other. The characters are  Lt. Paul Stamets and Chief Medical Officer Hugh Culber.

In Episode 5 the couple is introduced as they brush their teeth in their quarters and discuss their day. A pretty average scene, but fantastic in its representation of a gay couple as really typical.

Fans of the series remarked how great it was finally getting representation on Star Trek.

Treating gay relationships like any other

Explaining their relationship, the actor Anthony Rapp, who plays Stamets said,

“I’m really excited and happy when a gay character is a part of a story — especially when a gay character is created in a complex and human and non-stereotypical, interesting way, and that has certainly been the case with Stamets,

“And you get to see his relationship. There was a little glimpse with Sulu in Beyond, and it was a nice nod.

“But in this case, we actually get to see me with my partner in conversation, in our living quarters, you get to see our relationship over time, treated as any other relationship would be treated.”

Are the actors who play Stamets and Culber gay in real life?

Anthony Rapp who plays Lt. Paul Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery said in a 1997 interview with Oasis magazine, that he identified as “queer” rather than “gay” saying that, “I don’t want to get into labels, but I’ve never labelled myself except to say I’m queer. The thing that’s been most important to me to be out about is that I have been in loving relationships with men…I haven’t said ‘I am gay.’ Because the truth is that I’ve also been in love with women, although the truth is I do think I’m primarily homosexual…”

Wilson Cruz, who plays Chief Medical Officer Hugh Culber identifies as gay and is an LGBT+ advocate and even joined the board of directors of GLAAD in 1997. In 2012 he became the National Spokesperson and Strategic Giving Officer at the organisation.

  • Star Trek had not one but two franchise firsts in the last episode

Star Trek Discovery is pretty groundbreaking…

Not just because the ship looks incredible, the strong female lead and a gay couple – with a storyline… but now they’ve gone into the final frontier – the f-bomb and beyond.

Yes, some fans were left stunned after Monday night’s episode (episode 5) when not one but two F-bombs were dropped, by two characters. Cadet Tily (Mary Wiseman) was the first person to ever say the word, followed by Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp).

Rapp told Indiewire that it was “f**king cool” to say f**k… saying, “We were aware of it, and we embraced it, and we had a blast with it” .

    Too right.

The other first was the scene between Lt Stamets and his partner, Doctor Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) having a normal, but cute, conversation in their living quarters. Previously there has only been snatches of gay couples in the Star Trek universe, but they got a full scene, being normal, brushing their teeth together…

Speaking about his character, Rapp said,

“I’m really excited and happy when a gay character is a part of a story — especially when a gay character is created in a complex and human and non-stereotypical, interesting way, and that has certainly been the case with Stamets,

“And you get to see his relationship. There was a little glimpse with Sulu in Beyond, and it was a nice nod.

“But in this case, we actually get to see me with my partner in conversation, in our living quarters, you get to see our relationship over time, treated as any other relationship would be treated.”
The couple even got a nod from George Takei, Star Trek’s original, Sulu

    Bravo Discovery!
