  • Eurovision Drag Queen Faces Backlash From Russia

Austria’s entry into the 2014 Eurovision faces a massive backlash ahead of her performance in the world’s biggest music competition.

Anti-gay petitioners in Russia, Armenia and Belarus have called for Conchita Wurst (real name Tom Neuwirth) to be banned or edited out of the televised event, which will be broadcast across Europe.

The bearded drag queen is already in the top 10 of favourites to win, with her song ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’.

Last year Turkish National broadcaster TRT was rumoured to have cancelled their broadcast of the 2013 Eurovision because of a lesbian kiss between two women in Finland’s entry Marry Me. There were in fact two gay kisses in the 2013 show.

The last time Austria won the Eurovision competition was in 1966, with Udo Jürgens, who sung Merci Chérie.

According to sources the petition reads:

‘Austria will be represented in the Eurovision 2014 by the transvestite contestant Conchita Wurst who leads the lifestyle inapplicable for the Russians. The popular international competition that our children will be watching has become a hotbed of sodomy at the initiation of the European liberals. Russia is one of the only European countries that has managed to maintain normal and healthy family values based on love and mutual support between MEN and WOMEN. That is why we are against the Eurovision 2014 to be broadcast in Russia…’

Yesterday the petitioning and human rights website, AllOut.org was encouraging people to sign a petition to empower Eurovision broadcasters, European Broadcasting Union (EBU) not to censor a woman on woman kiss during Finland’s song ‘Marry Me’ after alleged fears that Turkish broadcaster TRT pulled the transmission of Eurovision because of the kiss.

  • Has Turkey cancelled Eurovision broadcast over gay kiss?

Turkish national broadcaster TRT has cancelled transmission of Eurovision tomorrow night following reports that it cancelled the broadcast because of the gay kiss between to two women in Finland’s entry – ‘Marry Me’

According to All Out, ‘Turkey has just banned the show from being broadcast and now the press reports that there is pressure on Eurovision to cancel the kiss before Saturday’s final. Eurovision organisers are worried other Eastern European countries might ban the contest too.’

The Eurovision final is due to be broadcast on Saturday night (18th May 2013).

The organisers face a choice: will they stand up for a Eurovision that is about unity, creativity and fun – or will they give in to pressure from countries who discriminate against gay and lesbian people?

If tens of thousands of us sign it could be reported in newspaper articles today and tomorrow, showing Eurovision organisers that there’s a public outcry demanding they keep the kiss.

The petition has over 13,000 signatures.

When an interviewer asked how Finland’s Siegfrids thought viewers in countries such as Belarus and Azerbaijan might react to her performance she said: ”I think that everybody should have the right to do that. It’s no big deal, it’s not big deal to me. It’s a show, and it’s about love and love is beautiful in any form.”

    Pinknews are reporting:

The TRT station claimed that the cancellation of the broadcast was due to low ratings, but last year a quarter of Turkish households tuned in to watch.

Eurovision starts at 8:00PM on BBC 1

  • Eurovision Unveils Butterfly Logo

We’re gearing up here at TGUK HQ for Eurovision 2013. With Bonnie burning up in the wings we’re sure this year’s contest will be fair, fun and fabulously Swedish.

    Eurovision 2013

Ok sarcasm aside about the fair bit, we’re quite taken with this year’s logo, which takes the shape of a rather beautiful butterfly.

So where’s the idea from? Well the lovely peeps at Eurovision.TV have said:

‘Eurovision Song Contest is a shared project. It unites millions of people. In the east, west, north and south. Beyond all the glitter, there is a thought. A big idea that is 100% relevant for Public Service. It’s about togetherness, diversity and happiness. Eurovision Song Contest might appear as a trivial matter. But a trivial matter that engages over one hundred million people of all ages in more than 40 countries all over the world. And today science knows that sometimes small matters can start powerful and big movements. This phenomenon is called ”The Butterfly Effect”. A flap from one butterfly can – at least in theory – start a hurricane. Butterflies have one common name, but exist in thousands of different shapes and colours. Just like the Eurovision Song Contest, one strong identity with a rich national diversitiesy [sic]. Working together, we can achieve anything – We are one.

    Ah, isn’t it beautiful!!

So Eurovision is just over a month away, what will you be doing for it?

  • Is it any cop? Eurovision 2012 UK Entry

Waiting with breath held, nervously cracking my knuckles, it’s a tense time at THEGAYUK gin palace. Until we heard that the Hump was going to be representing us in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Okay… here’s a quick quiz what links the following Eurovision entries with Engelbert Humperdinck.

Scooch, Gemini, Jade, Blue? Their combined ages equal the Humps. That aside, the song is a simple, timeless love song, with key-change. It could stand us in good stead. The last time the UK got anywhere near the top was with Jade’s simple, timeless love song — ‘It’s My Time’ — and both Andrew Lloyd Webber and Engelbert Humperdinck share the same face. It’s an omen. Gay science. So we could be in with a winner here

Jade’s song was a cracker and we loved the fact that she nearly took out one of the violinists during the live show, so we’re hoping that The Hump will go a step further a wipe out the entire orchestra.

Bitching aside (it is Gay Christmas after all) Engelbert is in good voice and with over 150m records sold the crooner certainly isn’t short of a few fans worldwide.

Currently standing 3rd in the overall betting odds to win it looks as thought the UK might be in with a chance of getting into the TOP 10 this year!

    Go Hump… Go Hump… (that’s a battle cry, not a mating call)

The unveiling of the Eurovision song for the UK is a special time in my life.
