Fun town of the world revealed as Chicago, London comes 10th!
Chicago is the fun capital of the world — streets ahead of London in TENTH place, according to a major new study.

- Chicago is a great getaway for the gay community with two gay neigbourhoods, Boystown and Andersonville
- Has one of America’s largest prides.
The ‘windy city’ topped a global poll of 20,000 people, scoring highest for the best restaurants, bars and neighbourhoods.

Melbourne was runner-up, followed by Lisbon, New York, Madrid, Mexico City, Sao Paolo, Los Angeles, Barcelona and – in 10th place – London.

Chicago was praised for its affordability and friendliness, and residents reported the best work-life balance.

London-dwellers admitted they work longer hours than they’d like, allowing for less ‘fun-time’ in their personal life.

But Londoners certainly make the most of their 9-5 – a third say some of their closest friends are colleagues and one in five have had sex at work.

And London pipped Sydney to the title of the world hangover capital.

Time Out London’s Editor-in-Chief, Caroline McGinn said,

“We surveyed 20,000 urbanites in 18 cities across the world to find out two things. First: where are the most dynamic, gastronomic, culturally unbeatable urban hotspots right now?

“And second: what are we up to and how is that changing? We found out some fun stuff along the way.

“Looking for sex? Better heard to Plumstead or Paris. Food and culture? Chicago and NYC are buzzing.

“Lisbon is the place to fall in love. As for London, we’ve got plenty going on in this amazing and culturally vibrant city, but many are feeling a bit lonely and hungover right now.”

The Time Out City Index shows Melbourne is the second most fun city in the world, as it has a great quality of life, and ranks highly for its bars and restaurants.

Six in 10 people find Melbourne an easy place to live and three-quarters of residents love living there.

Lisbon takes third place and is ranked as the world’s most sociable and least lonely city.

New York was fourth, praised for its arts, nightlife and music – although it has the toughest dating scene of them all.

Fifth place went to clubbing capital Madrid, where people go out 19 times a year compared to just six times in Melbourne.

Madrid also has the lowest working hours of all 18 countries, as people only work 39 hours a week.

Tokyo and Paris are the most cultured cities, with the highest number of residents regularly going to theatres or museums.

People in Mexico City have the most affairs and are the least stressed, Miami emerged as the capital of threesomes and Barcelona is the home of the boozy lunch.

Despite other cities being more affordable, easier for making friends and offering a better work-life balance, 66 percent claim there are always new things to do.

Londoners go to theatres and museums up to 25 times a year, they enjoy 4.7 nights out a month and two-thirds say the capital has a great restaurant scene.

The ‘Big Smoke’ is also vying with Sydney for the title of hangover capital and one-night stand hotspot – 64 per cent versus 65 per cent.

Londoners have sex 1.2 times a week – compared to Parisians who have sex an average of 1.6 times a week, more than in any other city.

Caroline McGinn for Time Out London added.

“If there’s one thing that Time Out really knows and loves, its cities.

“We’ve been dedicated to discovering their best bits for many years. Now we thought it was about time to document urban life. Because cities are important. They’re fun. But they’re also crucibles for new opportunities, new ideas, and new ways of living.”

Other highlights discovered in the Time Out City Index include New York residents go out the most (6.4 times a month), Toyko city dwellers love sharing their food pictures on Instagram and Dubai are stuck in the office the longest.

People are most likely to have a friendly chat with strangers in Chicago, and in contrast, those in Singapore are least sociable, choosing to keep themselves to themselves.

11 unbelievable myths that still exist about HIV

Decades on since the first recorded cases of what would become known as HIV and AIDS, myths are still circulating about this condition. Here’s 11 of the weirdest that still persist.

1) That only gay men can get HIV

Are you living in the 80s? HIV does not see sexuality, it does not see gender, it does not see race or greed. Anyone who comes into contact with the virus could potential be infected.

HIV cannot be passed through saliva, so cannot be

HIV cannot survive outside the human body, so it is unlikely you can pass on HIV through this method.

4) People with HIV will die young

There is no reason why someone who is living with HIV will die young because of the virus. Get tested, know your status and get the medication you need.

5) You will get HIV if you sleep with someone that has HIV

Not always the case. A lot depends on their viral load, whether they are on medication and how much exposure you have to their bodily fluids. So if you’re both using condoms, using PrEP and their viral load is low the likelihood of you contradicting HIV is near zero.

6) You can catch HIV?

Nope HIV isn’t a ball or frisbee.

7) You can get infected with HIV by sharing a bath with someone who has it.

HIV can not live outside the human body and bath water is pretty much deadly to the virus.

8) HIV and AIDS are the same thing.

Not true. HIV means that a person has the virus in their body. AIDS is when someone’s immune system is compromised so much that they can no longer fight off diseases.

9) HIV is a death sentence.

As long as you test, know your status and get manage your health in the right way, you can live a long, full life.

10) HIV is a bisexual disease

No matter what you heard on TV, there’s nothing to suggest that this is true. HIV doesn’t care if you’re gay, bisexual or straight.

11) Kids are learning about this stuff in Schools.

Sex ed is not compulsory in all schools in the UK.

Running man | 8 top tip if you’re planning to start running again

If you are looking to get back into running after a break here is advice from Lewis Manning, Senior Sports Physiotherapist at BMI The London Independent Hospital

Gradual training

The most important thing you need to remember when getting back into running after a break, especially if you’re recovering from an injury, is to increase your training gradually. All other interventions are secondary to this and if you get this wrong, you are much more likely to get injured. This is because both your cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems take time to adapt to the new load that is being put on them.

Slow increases

The general rule when running is that you should only increase your training load by 10% a week (unless your longest run is less than 4 miles, then you can increase things a bit more quickly).

Have a good pair of running shoes that suit you.

Everyone is different and it doesn’t have to be the most expensive pair that are the best.

Be careful about starting to run if you are significantly overweight.

It may be helpful to begin with low-impact exercise such as walking or cross training to begin with.

Warming up

Warm up by running a bit slower for the first 5-10 minutes is important on the higher intensity (especially interval) runs. However, general static stretching before running has been shown to not reduce the chances of injury. It may be important to stretch specific muscles that are tight on you, but this should be done throughout the week, not just before a run.

Running on softer surfaces

Surfaces such as grass or a treadmill are a great way to get back into training as they put less force through your body. However, if you are competing in an event that requires road running, you will need to do some training on the road too.

Eat correctly

(again, this is another topic in itself) and drink when you need to. Don’t be obsessed by drinking, whether it be water or sports drinks, however. Your body will tell you when you need to drink and drinking too much can cause as many problems as not drinking enough.

Listen to your body.

Your body will generally ache a bit when returning to running. However, if niggles become persistent and are worsening, you should nip this in the bud early by getting advice from a physiotherapist.

Five ways not to be racist on gay dating apps

No Blacks. No Asians. No Queens.

I bet you already know where these quotes come from. I am also pretty sure you’ve seen them. Yes, these are common quotes from Grindr profiles. What’s worse is that I imagine you can think of more Grindr, Gaydar, GayRomeo profiles with further offensive and racist remarks on them.

But surely we can discriminate on who we fancy? Of course.

We must have the right to decide what shape, size and colour the dick is we choose to squeeze, suck or sit on? Without a doubt.

And if I want to say what I don’t like then it saves time doesn’t it? Perhaps.

So if I don’t fancy a black or white guy then I have the right to say so, don’t I? Maybe.

But there are ways of saying things.

So… Here are 5 things not to do on gay dating apps.

1) Do not use racist language. We all know what they are. No one thinks you’re big or smart or edgy for using them. And being practical, not many guys invite racists round to their houses.

2) Put what you like, what you ARE into. It’s more positive and inclusive and appealing to a wider range of people. Saying you like something, or love something is much more attractive than associating you with ‘No this’, ‘No that’ or other negative concepts.

3) Be polite. If someone messages you that doesn’t give you butterflies in your stomach (or lower) then just say thanks but no thanks. Most people will get the hint, and if they don’t just block them. It’s easier than resorting to a racist rant.

4) Be inclusive. Try not to see people as one dimensional. Not all ethnicities are the same. Look at your arm – it everyone with that similar shade the same as you? Do they eat the same food, socialise in the same way, believe the same as you do just because your skin matches? Of course not, so don’t apply this ignorance to other arm shades.

5) Challenge yourself. How many of your friends are the same as you? Do they all look the same, come from similar backgrounds? Most are probably the same age. How about bringing some diversity to your life? Speak to someone new, someone with maybe a different experience, a different outlook, a different skin colour – they might be able to shed new light on life. How does your coming out experience compare to the Asian guy 200 meters away or the polish guy four roads away or the twink smiling at you at the bottom of your screen?

Can’t get a date? 50 biggest turn offs revealed

Are you finding it hard to get a date? Perhaps it’s time to invest in some soap and a new deodorant.

Talking about ex-partners, being rude to waiting staff and having dirty fingernails are among the biggest turn-offs on a first date, a study has revealed.

Wearing ‘bad shoes’ and talking about yourself in the third person also appeared in the top 50 lists of no-nos.

The poll of 2,000 single people by e-cigarette pioneers blu revealed bad body odour as the top turn-off.

Almost three-quarters of adults said it would be their main reason to avoid a follow-up date.

Second place went to bad tempers, followed by lying, acting selfishly and having bad breath.

The study also found that people would prefer to date someone who vaped, over one who smoked.

Some people – clearly still haunted by their experiences – logged very specific complaints, including one encounter in which a man went on at great length about his hobby of collecting PARROT shaped ornaments.

Fifty-three per cent said they form an opinion on someone in 15 minutes or less, and over half would ditch someone who seemed otherwise perfect but had one glaring flaw.

The poll also showed wholesome traits were still valued as the most important qualities in a date, favouring a sense of humour and good hygiene over wealth and fashion sense, with non-smoking also a key consideration in a partner.

Jon Solimando, Brand Director at blu, said,

“Between the multitude of online apps, not to mention traditional ways like meeting in a bar or club, Brits now have more options than ever before to help them line up a first date.

“As an alternative to ‘turning off’ potential dates through smoking, as this research has shown, adult smokers can now get six weeks’ worth of blu products for less than the price of a pack of cigarettes upon signing up at love.blu.com.”

The study was carried out as part of blu’s new ‘Six Weeks to Fall in Love’ offer.

5 things you probably didn’t know about prostate cancer, but should

We look at one male cancer which touches the lives of at least one in eight men in the UK, Prostate cancer.

With the help of Dr Gordon Muir, the Consultant Urological Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, we dispell some untruths and discovers some facts about cancer which affects nearly 1 in eight men in the UK.

Here’re 5 things you probably didn’t know about prostate cancer, but should.

No early symptoms.

Prostate cancer usually gives off no early signs. Dr Gordon Muir, the Consultant Urological Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital said, that it “can be diagnosed only by examination or a blood test.”

He suggests that you should get checked out if you have, “bone pain, difficulty passing urine, or general malaise”, which might signify advanced prostate cancer.

Blood tests reveal the truth.

It isn’t all fingers up the bum. A blood test followed by a biopsy is taken to help doctors determine your prostate health.

Race and genetics are a factor.

There are a couple of higher risk groups. Dr Gordon Muir tells us that black men are much more likely to develop the disease. Family history also plays a huge role in your risk factor.

Diet can make a difference.

You should take good care of your diet as Dr Muir points out, “Being overweight and eating a lot of cooked red meat may increase the risk slightly too.” To remedy this he suggests, “tomatoes, green and yellow vegetables, soya protein, coffee and garlic may all help. As with most diseases, the best advice is to eat a healthy diet and keep fit”.

There are five types of prostate cancer.

Last year it was announced that the scientists from the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and Addenbrooke’s Hospital made the shocking discovery that there are five kinds of prostate cancer.

The discovery means that doctors will now potentially be able to distinguish between slow growing to the deadlier cancers. The discovery was identified by comparing 250 samples removed during surgery.

50 of the biggest one-hit-wonders…ever

Eighties pop smashes “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles and The Weather Girls’ “It’s Raining Men” have been voted the nation’s favourite one-hit wonders.

The two tunes tied for the top spot, beating Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky” and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers.

Bruce Woolley, who co-wrote “Video Killed the Radio Star” with fellow music producer Trevor Horn, said,

“It was a one-hit wonder but it has had a wonderful life and I’m very proud of it.

“It only took a few hours to write but we worked on the recording for months and I think it’s stood the test of time.

“My kids were slightly embarrassed by it when they were younger, but it paid for their education!”

Lou Bega’s “Mambo No.5” came fifth, ahead of Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 smash “Nothing Compares 2U”, Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”, “Don’t Leave me This Way” by Thelma Houston, “Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex and “Macarena” by Los del Rio.

Kevin Smith, a spokesman for online market researchers OnePoll, which conducted the poll of 2,000 music fans, said: “It’s interesting to see that the most popular one-hit wonders were originally released before the 21st Century.

“In fact, the highest ranking post-Millennium track was released in the year 2000 and landed at number 12 in the poll.

“It might be that musicians have learned the trick behind their biggest hits and know how to keep their momentum up.

“But whatever the reasoning behind the results of the top 50 list, we can see that all of them are unforgettable tracks”.

The Top 50 featured several well-known party tracks such as “Saturday Night” by Whigfield and “The Ketchup Song” by Las Ketchup.

“Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992 reached the 17th spot in the rankings while Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs Jones” reached 19.

And many will remember the ear-worm by Witch Doctor, “Ooh Ee Ooh Ah Aah Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang” from 1998.

The 90s claimed the most one-hit wonders, followed by the seventies, which included one-off hits like “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas and “Seasons in the Sun” by Terry Jacks.

One track which may surprise many as a one-hit wonder was “MMMBop” by Hanson which placed at number 30.

And “Barbados” by Typically Tropical which later was rewritten to be about Ibiza and sang by the Vengaboys in the nineties reached 44.

“Video Killed the Radio Star” writer Bruce Woolley, 62, who has also penned hit songs for dozens of other artists including ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ for Grace Jones, added, “The song’s been covered by hundreds of artists, used in video games, TV ads and has appeared in several Hollywood movies.”
