  • Here’s what Brazil’s new president has said about gay people

Brazil has a brand new president and it’s not good news for LGBT+ people.

Janine Moraes / Câmara dos Deputados / Wikipedia

Brazil’s new far-right president has threatened violence against gay people and that having them as neighbours lowers the land value.

Jair Bolosoanro has a chequered history when it comes to minority groups including gay people. Earlier this year Brazil’s public prosecutor charged Bolsonaro with inciting discrimination against gay people, indigenous people and black people after he said, “If I see two men kissing in the street, I will hit them.”

Rather a gay son would die

Speaking on the thought that one of his sons could be gay the anti-gay politician told Playboy in 2011, “I would not be able to love a gay son. I would rather he die in an accident”. He also said that if a gay couple were to become his neighbours he believed it would lower the market value of his home.

In July 2011 in an interview with  Época, Bolsonaro said that he would “fight to prevent the distribution of the ‘gay kit’ [a set of guidelines proposed by UNESCO to promote the rights of the LGBT community in primary schools] because “their intention is to promote homosexuality, which is an affront to the family structure, and if that makes me prejudiced, then I’m prejudiced and very proud of it.”

Oh and he believes that homosexuality has increased because “due to liberal habits, drugs” and women in the workplace.

    Brazil and LGBT+ People

Brazil has a terrible reputation for violence against LGBT+ people. In January it was reported that an LGBT+ person is killed in Brazil every 19 hours. and in September 2017, it was ruled that homosexuality is a disease, by allowing so-called “gay cure” therapy to continue.

Judge Waldemar Claudio de Carvalho ruled that homosexuality can be treated as a disease and that conversion therapy as a means of curing it, is legal. The ruling has caused widespread condemnation and concern amongst LGBT+ people and their allies.

Despite this, Brazil is home to one of the world’s biggest pride events.

These are the most gay-friendly cities where you can celebrate pride this year

Wondering where the safest and friendliest places to celebrate pride in 2018?

Pride Kickoff Rally 2013, Tribeca, Manhattan

Airbnb reveal the world’s top destinations for an unforgettable Pride this year.

Through a specially commissioned study conducted by ABCD in May 2018, the people-powered hospitality platform with a mission to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere has found out which destinations have the most to offer LGBTQ travellers.

The study looked at 100 cities with the highest Pride attendance worldwide and found out which of these fared best under five different LGBTQ categories, including nightlife and dating. Here are the winning cities and categories:

    1. OVERALL WINNER – New York City

The Big Apple not only offers one of the biggest Pride celebrations, it also boasts a bustling nightlife, a busy dating scene, well-established marriage equality and impressive Airbnb stats: the city that sparked the gay Pride movement following the Stonewall riots will welcome over 27,000 guests on Airbnb during Pride Week.

    Runners-up 2. London, 3. Madrid, 4.San Francisco, 5. Paris, 6. Berlin, 7. Toronto, 8. Chicago, 9. Los Angeles, and 10. Amsterdam.

    2. TINDER DATING WINNER – London

Traditionally a mecca for LGBTQ travellers, it’s no surprise that London topped the ranking for dating. Using data shared with Airbnb by Tinder this May, they discovered that the British capital has the highest per capita usage of LGBTQ Tinder profiles worldwide (via Tinder’s More Genders feature).

Sydney places 9 in the Dating category so why not take your date to Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Australia’s most successful musical? On this Experience, bookable on Airbnb, you’ll get to go behind the scenes and take a sneak peek at the costumes, wigs and make-up from the production that usually only cast and crew get to see.

    3. NIGHTLIFE WINNER – New York City

Looking at the number of LGBTQ clubs and bars, New York City is a top destination in this category too.

The city that never sleeps is closely followed in this ranking by 2. Los Angeles, 3. Tokyo, 4. Berlin, 5. Madrid, 6. London, 7. Mexico City, 8. Paris, 9. San Francisco, and 10. Barcelona.

    4. PRIDE WINNER – São Paulo, Brazil

In terms of sheer numbers attending Pride celebrations, São Paulo tops the ranking in this category. Approximately 3 million visitors attended last year’s celebrations.

Liniker, a popular transgender musician from São Paulo, will take guests to some of her favourite local spots and end her experience with a private listening session of her upcoming album.

Next in line are 2. Toronto, 3. New York, 4. Madrid, 5. London, 6. San Francisco, 7. Chicago, 8. Cologne, 9. Houston, and 10. Paris.

5 – MARRIAGE EQUALITY (JOINT) WINNERS – Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Utrecht, Netherlands

Airbnb also looked at their list of cities to find out which destinations pioneered LGBTQ marriage equality. In the Netherlands, same-sex marriage was made legal in 2001, making it the first country in the world to do so. This places the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht in joint first position.

The Dutch paved the way, but these countries and their respective cities followed closely behind:

    6. TRAVEL WINNER – London

For this category, Airbnb looked at cities that had the highest year-on-year growth in Airbnb guest arrivals during Pride. They also identified which cities have the highest number of LGBTQ Experiences on Airbnb and where you can find Airbnb Guidebooks with the highest number of tips for LGBTQ travellers.

160K+guests are expected to check in to an Airbnb during London’s Pride Week

The top city in this ranking is London, followed by 2. Los Angeles, 3. New York, 4. San Francisco, 5. Tokyo, 6. Paris, 7. Montreal, 8. Amsterdam, 9.Berlin, and 10. Barcelona.

  • An LGBT+ person killed every 19 hours in Brazil

Nearly 450 LGBT+ people were killed in violence in Brazil in 2017.

New research has suggested that nearly 450 LGBT people were killed at the hands of homophobes and transphobes in Brazil in 2017. Brazil also has the highest number of murders in the world. A record 62,000 murders were recorded in 2016.

Grupo Gay De Bahia an LGBT+ watchdog, recorded a 30 percent increase from the 327 victims killed during 2016. The new figures equate to nearly one violent death every 19 hours. There were 387 murders and 58 suicides linked to homophobia.

Last year being gay was ruled a disease in the country, when a court in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, ruled that homosexuality was a disease and that so-called “gay cure” therapy was legal.

Despite the country hosting one of the world’ biggest LGBT+ prides, Brazil has the highest number of violent deaths linked to homophobia.

This is despite same-sex marriage being legal in the country and Rio De Janeiro hosting one of the world’s largest LGBT+ pride events. The country also has discrimination protections for its LGBT+ community enshrined in law.

Luiz Mott, president of Grupo Gay de Bahia told The Guardian that ultra-conservative politicians could have contributed towards the rise in homophobia in the country. He said, “It’s a discourse that destroys solidarity and equates LGBT people to animals,”

  • Brazil just ruled that being gay is a disease

A court in Brazil has ruled that gay cure therapy is legal

Despite having one of the largest LGBT+ prides in the world, a court in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, has ruled that homosexuality is a disease and that so-called “gay cure” therapy is legal.

Judge Waldemar Claudio de Carvalho ruled that homosexuality can be treated as a disease and that conversion therapy as a means of curing it, is legal. The ruling has caused widespread condemnation and concern amongst LGBT+ people and their allies.

The judge overruled a 1999 resolution which outlawed therapists from treating homosexuality.

The appeal on that resolution was put forward by an evangelical Christian, Rozangela Justino, who was banned from practising after offering conversion therapies.

A number of high-profile organisations and people have rallied against the ruling saying that they will appeal the decision. Toni Reis, who heads the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Alliance, said the ruling was a step in the wrong direction plans to appeal at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Brazil’s psychology council says it would appeal the injunction also.

Speaking to the Guardian, David Miranda, a gay councillor in Rio de Janeiro said,

“This decision is a big regression to the progressive conquests that the LBGT community had in recent decades”.

Brazil also has one of the highest crime and murder rates against LGBT+ people in the world. In 2016 it was recorded that one LGBT+ person was killed every day in Brazil.

    We hear you.

One question that should never be left ignored is whether you picked a honeymoon destination that is gay-friendly. With over 70 countries still having some form of anti-homosexuality law, it’s easy to see how your perfect holiday could go awry. Although not feeling comfortable showing your affection to your loved one in public is not something you should ever have to deal with, it’s an especially unwelcome feeling on this special occasion. So, we’ve put together a list of the most gay-friendly honeymoon destinations; areas filled with beauty, vibrancy and friendliness.

    1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Previously THEGAYUK.com had suggested Brazil as a good location for a Honeymoon, however, due to the legal and criminal situation, we cannot advise going to this part of the world.

    2. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is constantly at the top of the most LGBT-friendly lists — and with good reason. 3. Reykjavik, Iceland

Same-sex marriage became legal in Iceland in 2010, but the country always had a relaxed and accepting attitude towards gay couples. For one thing, their prime minister is openly gay! Despite all this, the beauty of this outlandish country is what will captivate you the most. Don’t miss the Blue Lagoon: a geothermal spa located in a lava field where you can soak in milky blue water at any time of the year.

    4. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Seen by many as one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa, Cape Town promises spectacular scenery, incredible beaches and exotic wildlife. Drive safely, though, as the baboons run free!

    7. Taiwan

Taiwan may also come as a surprise for a gay-friendly destination, but it is one of the most accepting countries in Asia. There’s something for all tastes and tonnes to explore for such a tiny island, including nine national parks (don’t miss the Taroko National Park), a bustling metropolis, pleasant sub-tropical weather and beautiful, remote beaches.

The sun always shines in the South Californian desert oasis of Palm Springs. As a city that boasts the most same-sex (and the most clothing optional!) hotels in the world, it’s easy to see how you’ll have a great time. Rather go golfing? Hiking? Clubbing? There’s little that can’t be had in Palm Springs.

  • One LGBTI person killed every day in Brazil

According to a Brazilian LGBTI advocacy group almost one LGBTI person is killed everyday in Brazil.

As the world’s media focuses on Rio during the Olympic, stark information has been revealed about the LGBTI community in Brazil. Over 1,600 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex people have been killed in hate related attacks in Brazil over the past four years according Grupo Gay da Bahia.

Micro Rainbow International (MRI), a group which helps LGBT people set up small businesses to “step out of poverty” in Rio de Janeiro, said in a statement,

“Internationally, Brazil projects an image of tolerance and openness, where expressions of sexuality during Carnival are nurtured.  However, when it comes to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people’s daily lives, Brazil can be ranked as one of the world’s deadliest places.

“Brazil’s culture of machismo paired with nearly a quarter of Brazil’s population being evangelical Christian and very outspoken in their opposition to homosexuality, creates a hotbed of violence and discrimination toward LGBTI people.”

MRI has trained 20 LGBT people, in setting up small businesses. The training is part of a bigger programme funded by the European Union which supports LGBT people in Rio de Janeiro to improve their skills and set up small businesses as a way out of poverty.

Lucas Paoli, MRI’s project manager said,

“Low income LGBT people in Rio experience discrimination across several aspects of their lives – such as employment, education and family – and additionally, they face regular violence and abuse, at times extreme, such as murder.”

Over the last year MRI has trained over 80 LGBT people in setting up small businesses, has facilitated training opportunities to an additional 20, has recently secured employment opportunities for LGBT people in poverty at the Olympic games and has trained 18 local employers on the barriers faced by LGBT people in the workplace.

    Sebastian Rocca, MRI’s CEO said,

“In a period of economic and political crisis, actions like MRI’s offer a lifeline to many LGBT people who would otherwise be left behind,

“On this occasion we celebrate the determination and the courage of 20 LGBT people who chose to fight discrimination and to take their future into their own hands.  We celebrate 20 new small businesses, from plumbing to sushi catering to online recruitment, we could not be prouder.”

  • Gay Kiss Between Straight Actors Breaks Social Media In Brazil

A kiss between two straight celebrities in Brazil has created a social media storm.

Two of Brazil’s most famous actors kissed to show that there is nothing wrong in showing ‘our affection and love’ and to call out the ‘macho card-carriers, hypocritical and prejudiced’.

The kiss between Bruno Gagliasso and João Vicente de Castro happened at the GQ Men of The Year Awards 2015.

The picture was posted on Bruno Gagliasso’s Instagram profile has attracted nearly 90,000 likes and over 20,000 comments.

Brazil has a troubled history with LGBT rights and is the epicentre for the murder of transgender people. In 2014, 113 of the 226 trans people murdered happened in Brazil.

  • FILM REVIEW: From Beginning To End

There is good taste, and then there is incest.

It’s surprising that we can sit and watch a lot of suspect and even deviant behaviour amongst (consenting) adults on the silver screen, but this is one topic that we feel is just a tad too icky even for us. Especially when it comes in the form of a melodramatic Brazilian telenova that is short on both substance as well as clothing, and is to all intents and purpose nothing more than a pretty piece of soft porn.

It starts with two young half brothers, one 6 years old and the other 12, who are a little too close to each other for our comfort zone, and for their mother too who suspects there may be more here than what meets the eye. Flash-forward to the boys as grown men, one of the fathers dies, then the mother passes away too, and the boys seek solace in each other. Well that’s their excuse as they have barely stopped lusting after each other since they were kids.

We are convinced that it’s not just lust, but real love, which is put to the test when the younger brother who is a potential Olympic swimming champion is told by his coach that he must move abroad to train. To Russia no less. Oh come on coach, you mean to tell us there are no decent swimming pools closer to Brazil?

Love conquers all though and even a very pretty girl cannot steal the old brother away from his one true love, and this all plays out to a rather deafening over-laden heavy strings soundtrack. And we guess they will happily ever after? Who knows? More importantly, who cares?

Why see it at all? Well the boys/men are rather stunning beefcakes that even with this limited script prove that they can actually act, and also writhe around naked together looking very sexy but without doing the act (it’s soft porn after all). It was a big box office hit in Brazil when it was released in 2009, and it has now surfaced on Amazon where you can waste £4.49 and more importantly 90 minutes of your time.
