COMMENT | My worst day of school was always the “first day back”

If you ever want to know why I can always manage to put my foot in it – at any given opportunity, it goes way back to the multitude of “first-days”

The last week of August was always hell.

Except the one between primary and secondary school. That’s because I had, at the age of 10, decided that I didn’t want to follow the rest of my primary school classmates down the normal route of going to the secondary school that ours was a feeder for. Why? Well, every day of my existence at my primary school was filled with homophobic bullying. You see, I was unlike all of the other boys.

I played with the girls, I despised sports but was surprisingly good at skipping.

In my first month of primary school, I decided, that the boys’ uniform was far too bland and that the girls’ socks were much more in keeping with my sensibilities. Obviously, as a five-year-old, I had no means of obtaining my own pair of the crochet patterned socks, but I did notice a pair in the lost property. I’ve always had an eye for detail and a bargain bin. I snuck in one lunchtime and, I didn’t steal, I borrowed them.

I wore them proudly into the schoolyard, leaning up against the playground wall. I was working it. As far as I was concerned, I was the pretty minx in my mother’s magazines. That was the day my bully-free school days ended.

Whoever said your childhood years are the happiest of your life, clearly wasn’t a queer kid. You grow up quickly when you face that much hate.

Each “first day back” after the summer holidays became agony. That last week of the summer holiday, was the cruellest. I eeked out every last moment of freedom. Oh yes, I loved getting the new pencil case (from Woolworths) and matching it with my lunchbox (I was never allowed the My Little Pony one, due to fears of exacerbating the bullying problem). I’ve always been a strong believer in creating a brand, but despite my new classroom accessories – I, personally, was never allowed to rebrand. First day back would be groundhog day.

Then there was the summer of change, between primary and secondary. It was a summer of hope. I was going to go to a new school. Nothing to do with my old one. No one from my primary was going to go. Whilst my former classmates adhered to the feeder system,  I went my own road, backed by my ever, increasingly worried parents.

But I was one of those damned queer kids that just wouldn’t or actually couldn’t conform. Once again I found myself hanging around with the girls, but not the Mean Girls – these were the year’s before it was “trendy” to have a gay best friend (even though I wasn’t out – or accepting of my own sexuality.

My football skills were woefully inadequate and the drama block was a magnet.

I was Baking Off before Bake Off.

By the end of the first day, I was literally dumped in a bin by a fifth former. That week I was “bin boy”, but soon that gave way to a slew of name-calling. One day my class decided to play “Did you hear?”. It was like an earlier version of Twitter. Someone would start a rumour and whisper into the ear of the next person. That day’s rumour – as I walked towards the form room, was that I had killed myself over the weekend. As I got closer, those rumours had flesh to bone added, the way I had dispensed with myself and how tragic it was for my family. People in class kept this pretence up most of the morning.

I just didn’t have the skills to deal with bullying. The “tell the teacher” mantra was inadequate and in the days of Section 28 – teachers just didn’t know how to deal with homophobic bullying.

I showed my taunters that it hurt. I now wish I hadn’t… I wish I had owned every name thrown at me and with a rye smile and a naughty side eye added, “and?”

    Inside I’m crippled.

I’m always that ten-year-old in my mind – constantly worried about being binned again.

Perhaps if RuPaul’s Drag Race had started a decade (or two) earlier I could have learned to read each and every person who called me a poof, a queer, a pervert or gay lord. I think that fear of new situations has remained with me, even into adulthood. The only way I seem to be able to get through the situation is to say something… anything… usually something totally inappropriate.

You see, inside I’m crippled. I’m always that ten-year-old in my mind – constantly worried about being binned again. So I use humour and self-deprecation as a way of dealing with new situations. You see, life gives us constant New Days – or First Day Backs and now… I can always be counted upon to say the most inappropriate things at the right time.

    Stage Mother

    Rating: 4 out of 5.

Stage Mother sees conservative, Texas church-choir director Maybelline (Jacki Weaver) inheriting her recently deceased son’s drag club, and surprising her closed-minded husband, and everyone else she knows, by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy.

Jacqui Weaver is exceptional as a mother who mourns the death of her son – a drag queen – in the terrific new film Stage Mother. To say it’s a gay old time is an understatement. It’s instead a grand old time, and get ready for a very emotional ending.

‘STAGE MOTHER’ has arrived, ahead of its now earlier theatrical release across the UK and Ireland.

    INNERJI

Sometimes you need a pick me up that tastes refreshing, not chemical, step up and come through INNERJI. A brand new drink free from all the nasties that we’ve come to accept from perk-up drinks. It’s the first-ever caffeine-free energising tonic and contains the “revitalising immortality super-herb, Jiaogulan”, found in the mountains of the Far East. Jiaogulan contains energising properties which increase strength and endurance naturally to give you the energy boost you need, without the caffeine. With all that talk of immortality, I’m reminded of Death Becomes Her and I’m living for it.

    Dazzle Swimshorts by TEAMM8

I have to be honest, I’d not heard about Teamm8 here in the UK, (they come all the way from Australia) until these swim-shorts arrived on my doorstep and now I’m actually in love. Somehow, I’m imagining magic, once worn these turn my butt into a living version of the David statue, Incredible.

As for the design, they are colourful, I’ll give them that. Pride season may sadly be all but over (did it actually even happen) but there are always the beaches of Gran Canaria.

    Farmologie Hand Cream

With all the handwashing we’ve been enduring recently, my hands are feeling raw and the cuticle situ isn’t good, it has to be said. Finding a hand cream that doesn’t feel too tacky, but also leaves the fingers and palm feeling subtle is a science, one that Farmologie by Childs Farm have seemingly cracked. Plus I love that this company understands that the planet is important. To that end, the packaging is 100 per cent recycled ocean-bound plastic, which has been ethically sourced. Oh, and the coconut body oil is divine. Vegan and cruelty-free.

  • 9 foods you shouldn’t eat if you’re planning to bottom tonight

9 foods you shouldn’t eat if you’re planning to bottom tonight

A lot of people think that if you’re planning to bottom for a guy that you’ll only be able to eat ice cubes on your date, but that really isn’t true. It actually takes hours or even days for the food you eat to turn to poop and for it to be ready to leave your body.

So, rather than worry about the food you’re eating that night, it might be worth looking at the foods to avoid in the morning or even the night before a big session.

Of course, if you’re very concerned about debris in your system or you’re a complete, white-glove bottom then douching is pretty much your best option for making sure no accidents happen during anal sex.

Here are a few of the biggest bottom no-nos!

    1. Hummus.

    CREDIT: Pixabay

Sorry guys but unless you wanna be farting all night it’s best to stay clear from the Chickpea favourite. Nothing kills the moment than a back end blow out!

    2. Chickpeas.

    CREDT: Pixabay
    CREDT: Pixabay

In fact stay clear from these all together. Chickpeas – the main ingredient in Hummus is the culprit.

    3. Beans.

You know the rhyme – Beans beans good for your heart the more you eat the more you fart…

    4. Fizzy drinks.

    CREDIT: Pixabay
    CREDIT: Pixabay

Carbonated drinks will blow up your intestine like a balloon . So if you’re out drinking it’s best to stay clear from fizzy sodas for your mixers as well as beers and ales. Perhaps stick with the wine or fruit juices for your mixers. So if you don’t want a carbonated cheeky squeak – lay of the colas.

    5. Green veg.

    CREDIT: Pixabay
    CREDIT: Pixabay

Cruciferous vegs like Cauliflower, Brussels, and Kale are known to cause the digestion system to become gassy as it can take longer for your body to digest.

    6. Oats not so good.

    CREDIT: Pixabay
    CREDIT: Pixabay

Although oats are generally good for your digestion they are know to cause flatulence.

    7. Meats.

    moreharmony / Pixabay

So here’s the thing meats, particular red meat sit in the stomach and intestines for ages. They take a really long time to digest – this can lead to bloating and well gas…

    8. Meds.

Some medications can cause diarrhea. Make sure that your the pills you’re taking don’t cause the runs. Speak to your GP if you’re on prescribed meds that might cause you probs downstairs. Don’t stop taking any medications that you’ve been prescribed without talking to medical professional first.

    9. Coffee.

    CREDIT: Pixabay
    CREDIT: Pixabay

Forget that after dinner coffee. Too much of the stuff could send you running to the loo with the runs.

Despite what you might think, the food that you eat directly before a hot session in the bedroom, probably won’t affect your ability to bottom. However a large meal will probably make you sleepy, just think about sleepy you feel after Christmas dinner!

So if you’re planning an all-nighter it’s best to lay off any food that will make you tired.

  • INTERVIEW | ‘You Don’t Look Deaf’ is something I’ve been told countless times – Luke Christian

INTERVIEW | ‘You Don’t Look Deaf’ is something I’ve been told countless times – Luke Christian

Luke Christian is an out and deaf entrepreneur who created his iconic fashion brand, DEAF IDENTITY with his redundancy cheque. He talks to us about his love of fashion and why it’s weird to fetishise deafness.

Tell us a little a bit about your company, what’s the goal?

I created DEAF IDENTITY last September 2019 as I took redundancy from my old job and came to a bit of a standstill where I had an idea of mixing my love for fashion whilst raising deaf awareness.

The goal is to highlight the deaf community by breaking down the barriers and stigmas surrounding us and to show that there is no right or wrong way to be deaf! I also wanted to create a brand that felt fresh, modern and relevant and to show that being deaf isn’t all people may think it is…

How are you going to marry fashion and deafness?

I aim to mix my love for fashion with deafness by allowing the consumer to personalise their items in British Sign Language to their own personal taste and they can also select their own ‘DEAF IDENTITY PHRASE’ which is designed to be quite tongue in cheek and to grab attention such as ‘WELL YOU DON’T LOOK DEAF’ which is something I have and still get told countless times!

    Who designs your clothing?

I design all of my clothing and get inspired by current affairs and what is going on in live time.

Some of the designs available from DEAF IDENTITY.

What are the biggest challenges facing you or DEAF IDENTITY at the moment?

The biggest challenge at the moment is Covid-19 restrictions as I’m sure it is for many, many other businesses out there too! But, the positive out of this is that it’s allowed me to pause, reflect and plan for the future.

Are there any great LGBT+ deaf role models?

I think this is a tricky question because one of the main reasons why I started DEAF IDENTITY is because being born deaf and whilst growing up deaf, I never had anybody to look up to in the public eye that was deaf so never felt I could relate to somebody or have a ‘deaf hero’.

With DEAF IDENTITY all the models that I use are all deaf or CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) so I hope that over time as the brand grows, there will be more role models to look up to and for people to feel connected with!

Who are your personal role models?

For me personally, Kate Moss. I’ve just always admired her from a young age and I remember falling in love with an image of her in a magazine and my love for fashion grew from then! I think what I love about her is that everyone knows who she is yet we know very little about her…

What are the barriers and stigmas that Deaf people can face?

I think the barriers deaf people face daily is equal rights. We as a community are always, always an afterthought and I think the main, current example is the ‘Where is the interpreter?’ campaign going on.

Throughout the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic, here in the United Kingdom, during the BBC news special at 5 pm with the daily briefing, there is no interpreter and we seem to be the only country in the world that doesn’t have one.

Again, this is a pandemic and affects everybody yet deaf people who rely on British Sign Language aren’t being thought of and are once again, an afterthought.

    Ⓒ SUPPLIED

Do you think people are frightened or scared to interact with people who are deaf or hard of hearing?

For me personally, I think that from my own experience people are actually quite open and nice about it! I’ve had people notice my hearing aids and say ‘Oh I know BSL too!’ or ‘I know someone that’s deaf as well!’ which is quite sweet and I would rather they made an effort than not at all.

I don’t know why gay men feel the need to tell me things such as ‘Oh you’re deaf? That’s so cute, I just want to look after you!!’

Is it hard to feel part of the wider LGBT+ community or have you found people to generally welcoming?

I would definitely say it’s mixed but one challenge I face is my deafness being fetishised. I don’t know why gay men feel the need to tell me things such as ‘Oh you’re deaf? That’s so cute, I just want to look after you!!’ or ‘It turns me on knowing you’re deaf, maybe we could have some fun and I’ll turn your hearing aids off as well’…

It’s crazy to me and whenever I try to explain why this isn’t okay, I either get blocked or called ‘sensitive’.

Each to their own I guess!

  • We rated the best ballads from each of Mariah Carey’s albums

We rated the best ballads from each of Mariah Carey’s albums

    Don’t hate… but

    Debut

    “Vanishing”

This stripped-back piano-led ballad is probably one of the purest ballads of all time. It perfectly showcases Mariah’s vocal quality – and one epic vocal run (that sounds like the prettiest car alarm in the world) towards the end.

    Emotions

    “Can’t Let Go”

After a string of number 1s in the US, “Can’t Let You” didn’t manage to reach the coveted top spot – which we think is a travesty. Plus the accompanying music video is one classy affair.

    MTV Unplugged

    “If It’s Over”

Originally from the album Emotions, it marries MC’s songwriting with Carole King’s. Strong. Strong. Strong.

    Musicbox

    “Anytime You Need A Friend”

This song is pure power and quite different from anything Mariah had released up to that point. Its dark chord structure in the verse opens up to one glorious chorus, filled with a gospel vibe that truly inspires – and don’t get us started on that whistle note at the end of the song. The whole Musicbox album is the ultimate MC balladfest, it has so many good options.

    Merry Christmas

“Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)”

When Mariah stips it all back we get to hear the jewel that is early Mariah’s bell-like soprano range. This song is the perfect opposite to the campery fun that is Mariah’s all-time greatest (or best-selling anyway) hit, “All I Want For Christmas (Is You)”.

    Daydream

    “Looking In”

I love songs like these from MC. We really get to understand her story as an artist. “Looking In” feels deeply personal and from a songwriter’s perspective can feel very exposing but ultimately freeing.

    Butterfly

    “Butterfly”

This is pretty much a standard Mariah ballad, but the lyrics are just so powerful and on the first album of Mariah’s to be pretty thin of ballads this is the obvious choice, following by “My All”.

    Rainbow

    “After Tonight”

There are a couple of great ballads on this album – and you may be surprised that I didn’t choose “Can’t Take That Away” but the vocals in “After Tonight” are actually next level when you listen to them. Unfortunately the album’s other ballads like “Against All Odds” and “Thank God I Found You” (don’t hate) sounded just dialled in, I’m not a fan. Don’t get me started on the duet version of “Against All Odds”.

    Glitter

    “Lead The Way”

Back in the very early 2000s, when most of the world had seemingly written Mariah off, there’s the gem of an album the Glitter soundtrack. “Lead The Way” is just beautiful. The album showcased a newer style of singing for the diva – as she started to use her breathier lower register to great effect – allowing her to let rip towards the end of songs – giving a greater contrast to her performances.

    “I Only Wanted”

Maybe an “After Tonight” part 2, but MC’s vocals are on point in this song and she does the Spanish guitar sound so well. This gets the top spot on from this album, because the chorus is so strong. I would have gone with “Through The Rain” but the use of Mariah’s softer, breathier vocal style gets tiresome. It’s not until the last chorus that she really opens up and lets fly – which is a shame.

    “We Belong Together”

This album is very thin on the typical Mariah ballad, so the only choice is either “We Belong Together” or “Mine Again” luckily WBT is an epic song – particularly when she goes up the octave towards the end of the song.

    “I Wish You Well”

Back to the piano-driven ballad, Mariah lets her stunning vocals shine.

“I Want To Know What Love Is”

Mariah isn’t really known for her covers (why would she, as she’s probably the most accomplished song-writer in the world) but when she does one it gets noticed (remember “Without You”). “I Want To Know What Love Is” is, dare I say better than the original. And totally uplifting, you just don’t want it to end – and well in Brazil, it nearly didn’t! It was number 1 for an incredible 27 weeks.

    Merry Christmas II You

    “O Come All Ye Faithful”

I have to say, I’m not a fan of this album, when compared to her 1994 release, it feels a little underwhelming, but getting a duet with her Mumma is pure excellence!

Me. I Am Mariah The Elusive Chanteuse

    “Cry”

Unfortunately, the traditional MC ballad has all but disappeared for this album, aside from the cover of George Michael’s “One More Try”, which I never thought was a great song from GM. To note, this is one of Mariah’s worst-selling album so far. The album peaked at number 14 on the UK Albums Chart, selling just 6,547 copies in its first week.

    Caution

    “Portrait”

This song feels like a late-90s end-of-album Mariah ballad and that’s a lovely thing. On the whole, the album Caution album is underrated and under-selling. It really deserved to do better.

This is why we should stop using “dirty” and “clean” on hook up apps

A doctor has made the case for people to stop using the words “Dirty” and “Clean” when talking about people and their sexual health.

Doctor Naomi Sutton who is a trustee for the sexual health charity, Saving Lives, uploaded a thought-provoking video in which she pleaded with viewers to stop using the words “clean” and “dirty” to describe people and their sexual health because of the stigma that those words carry.

In the video, the doctor, who also stars in the E4 show The Sex Clinic holds up a number of placards with a simple message; let’s not use “dirty” and “clean” as words to describe sexual health and for us all to get tested for STIs more regularly.

She also pointed out that STIs were not a matter of personal hygiene and that there was no way of telling who has an STI by just looking at them.

You can read about our experience of getting a sexual health test here.

Here’s the text from Dr Sutton’s video.

    This is a plea,

Let’s stop using the words “clean” and “dirty” to describe people and their sexual health.

It just promotes STIGMA and misunderstanding.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not a matter of personal hygiene, You cannot tell by looking at or talking to someone whether or not they have an STI.

All STIs can be present without symptoms, including HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes Virus and the wart virus (HPV).

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea tests are easy to do,

    a) a wee in a pot for men

    b) a self-taken vaginal swab in women.

HIV and syphilis tests are simple blood test…. book in today and get tested!

Let’s talk about sex and STIs openly and honestly without stigma or shame.
