  • Zayn Malik Wants To Sing About Sex

So we now know the reason why Zayn left the most successful band on the planet and that is he has sex on his mind and wants to tell us all about it in song.

The former One Direction singer took to Twitter on Sunday morning to reveal that his first ever single, ‘Pillow Talk’, will be coming out on Friday. He posted the artwork of in a shirtless black-and-white photo showing all his tasteful tattoos together with a 50-second clip of the video on YouTube. So what does it sound like? Well just imagine the next Nick Jonas single with a slight dancier edge and you will have it, yep Zayn wants to sound very American with his music maybe with his eye on that market but it is pure pop with a decent hook.

This will mark the first material fans will hear from his upcoming debut solo album, this follows his sudden departure from One Direction a year ago as he wanted to have ‘the normal life of a young guy his age’ a young guy with a few million in the bank and an international recording contract of course! There was a lot of atmosphere in the group and Zayn seemed to become the odd one out and the band have ploughed on successfully as a four piece with a number one album and single all over the globe in the run-up to Christmas.

Zayn had lead with a short clip of a song called ‘Be Four’, which appeared in a special video for Fader magazine 10 weeks ago. Speaking about what fans can expect from his solo material, Zayn explained in that article: “I don’t feel like people really know what I’m going to give them, musically. And once they hear it, I feel like they will understand me a little bit more, and they’ll understand why I did what I did, and why I left the band, and why I had to write this shit down.

“Because for five – not even for five years, for ten years, this album has been in my brain, and it’s just been there, sat with me, needing to be out.”

He went much further telling the Sunday Times this week the real meaning of his music – Sex “Everybody wants to have sex and it’s something people want. It’s part of everybody’s life and you don’t want to sweep it under the carpet. It has to be talked about ”

The release of ‘Pillow Talk’ will be followed the same night by an appearance on the Graham Norton Show which will be his first TV interview and performance as a solo star. The song will then, of course, have a clear seven days of sales, downloads and streamlining to see if it can usurp Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber from the top of the charts. Of course with his band mates currently flying high in the top 10 with their third single from the massive current album, there will be an instant judge as to whether Zayn has made the right move or not.

Let the 1D chart battle commence. Have the fans forgiven him for splitting from 1D or will they turn their backs on him and stick with the other four and their new faves Shawn and Bieber. The industry is keen to see whether Zayn is the next Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating or Justin Timberlake that were right to jump ship or whether he is the latest Charlie Simpson from Busted, Brian McFadden from Westlife or Gary Barlow from Take That who all left hugely popular outfits for very indifferent solo careers and poor sales.

There are many rumours flying about that Harry Styles has officially recorded several solo tracks after collaborating with Snow Patrol so may fancy the soloist route himself too.

Ironically Zayn’s announcement came on the same day as pictures were released of the first 1D baby. Louis Tomlinson’s son with Briana Jungwirth had a child last week and although as the couple are not married it is uncertain as to who’s name the young lad will take we do know that they have chosen the names Sydney Rain for him. The couple is no longer romantically involved although Louis did attend the birth and instantly tweeted the lyrics to Boney M’s debut hit ‘Daddy Cool’ and added: “I’m pleased to say my baby son was born yesterday; he is healthy and pretty amazing, i am very happy”.

One Direction famously all auditioned separately for the X-Factor where Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger put the five lads together as a boy band after they failed to get picked as individuals.

Four of them were keen but it was Liam that was the most reluctant as he still wanted to go forward as a soloist which may indicate that he will be the next on his own into a studio now the band are on an 18-month break. The boys after coming third in the X-Factor then found a great first song in What Makes You Beautiful which lead to 5 hit albums breaking America and everywhere else, movies, awards and endless merchandise before taking over the entire known universe. At THEGAYUK we love anything 1D orientated so we will keep our ears to the ground on all the developments of all 5 lads as they go forward with their many projects.

  • X Factor Stars Sign Huge Record Deal

The very popular Ghanaian duo who swept to popularity in the current season of X Factor have just signed their record deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco records. The pair came second in the final which was watched by 10 million viewers last month with a total of 8 million votes cast over the final weekend.

Reggie and Bollie seemed like underdogs throughout the Autumn X Factor run but the country fell in love with their hugely infectious live performances. Usually mashing up two songs together every week they bought the party and received a standing ovation which went on and on every week that the judges often struggled to speak over. As mentored by Cheryl Fernandez-Versini their most famous performance was when early on they melded together Omi’s Cheerleader and One Directions What Makes You Beautiful which was when it was speculated that they would go all the way to the final.

On the last weekend which was recorded live at Wembley they came second to Louisa Johnson. She then released the winner’s single a cover of Bob Dylan’s Forever Youngwhich was not well received by the music buying public becoming the least successful X Factor Christmas song ever and the only one not to make number one in fact peaking at number 9 before falling like a stone which may play into the lads’ hands.

Reggie and Bollie may follow in the footsteps of many of the most successful artists of the last decade who gained great exposure from the show without winning it and then were given ample time with less pressure to produce the music they want. It is well logged that performers such as Olly Murs, JLS, One Direction, Fleur East, Union J, Rebecca Ferguson, Cher Lloys and Ella Henderson have tended to be more successful than the actual winners. It is expected that an album and single will appear very soon from Reggie and Bollie which should be easier to produce than Louisa’s as their speciality of covering or mashing songs is a lot more straight forward than trying to find 12 great new songs for a female act when writers may prefer to give their best songs to a Jess Glynne or Ellie Goulding than Louisa who they may seem tainted by her first songs relative failure. Both acts of course have the small matter of the X Factor Nationwide tour to complete which starts next month in Aberdeen prior to any time in the recording studio.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini who is of course suffering relationship difficulties at present is keen to have something happy to place on her social media. Jumping on her Instagram she gushed “It’s official, Reggie N Bollie have a record deal and have been signed by Syco. I am so happy for them and it couldn’t have happened to two nicer people ! #regigeandbolliewepopthechampagne watch this space”.

The lads responded online “We are so happy to be joining the Syco family and releasing our record with them. It is literally a dream come true for us to do what we love for a living. We promise to work hard and show you what Reggie and Bollie are made of. Here’s to a fun 2016”

Their music is a mix of happy West African music now popularised world wide by their inspiration Fuse ODG and Caribbean soca music as enjoyed at events such as the Notting Hill Carnival. We expect and hope for Hot, Hot, Hot; Whip Me Nae Nae, that One Direction cover and maybe even Modern Romances party classic The Best Years Of Our Lives. In the final they dueted with both Fuse ODG and the legendary Craig David making a very welcome comeback so maybe they will join on the album too. Whichever songs they choose we can hardly wait one things for certain as the pop world goes into ever decreasing spirals of Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Adele, George Ezra, Hozier balladry at long last its time to party again Reggie ‘N’ Bollie style.

  • Cassandra Wilson As Billie Holiday Will Leave You Breathless

Is the pop-music business truly gay-friendly?

Does it support, or viciously distort, perceptions of clearly gay pop? Both, actually. For every Bowie, Boy George and Marc Almond, there are others encouraged to view public disclosure as career suicide. It’s not surprising. If undeniably high-profile, pop’s also a hugely juvenile art-form, subsisting on one novelty sugar-rush after another. At best, it’s trashy, and, at worst, wholly undignified, a screeching, ridiculous hag reminiscent of Bette Davis’s classic, cinematic nightmare Baby Jane.
Ah, but there are far more dignified arenas for expressions of gay, artistic presence, jazz music for one.
Elegantly bypassing pop’s embarrassingly public temper tantrams, jazz, more subtly, encodes the intuitive leaps of gay logic in seductively complex rhythm sections. Put simply, that just means jazz – unlike pop – mimics the mercurial flow of queer creativity

It’s not surprising. Historically, jazz swarms with majorly influential outsider figures, all injecting a distinctly queer, unpredictable sensibility into the music itself. There’s Billy Tipton, the acclaimed, secretly female bandleader who lived her life as a man, complete with bound breasts and a padded crotch. More famous still, there’s Josephine Baker, the infamously banana-skirted toast of 1920s Paris, and finally, effortlessly heading any list of queer artistry, Billie Holiday.

All three women, quite aptly, embraced gay affairs, and Holiday, additionally – as a smack-binging black woman – had triple outsider status. So, in a world increasingly celebrating bland excess, it’s beautifully liberating to have Cassandra Wilson – arguably the finest singer in modern jazz – channel Billie’s brilliance.

Never heard of Ms. Wilson? You will. In brief, her voice is gorgeous, post-coital, smoked honey, a swooning, breathy rapture drowned in the instrumental love-making of her backing musicians. And, quite simply, her artistry soars unreachable heights beyond pop’s brain-dead, battery-farm divas pumping out clueless cover-versions night and day. Rather, her newest album– Coming Forth By Day – reworks key, Holiday songs as sultry tone-poems of loss and redemption.
So cultural expectations, perhaps, ran unrealistically high for her centrepiece appearance last weekend at London’s annual jazz festival. But in the shocking wake of the Paris atrocities, any appearance by Ms.Wilson seemed improbable, due to fraught, security fears.

Only minutes before show-time, a muddled announcement seemingly cancelled the gig, but Ms.Wilson, admirably, refused to be intimidated by philistine fanaticism. And in a stunning gesture of triumphant, queer solidarity, she unleashed the full force of her talent as standard-bearer for Billy’s sublime, queer misfit mystique.

Yes, she was unavoidably late, but heartfelt music’s always been thrillingly life-affirming, and Wilson’s short, if haunting set, spoke moody volumes.

‘Hush now, don’t explain’, she sang, bringing wrenching depths of situational sub-text to one of Holiday’s greatest songs. Weaving a spellbinding, definitive refusal to oppression onstage with just her voice and band, Wilson’s serene dignity was a master-class in queer resistance.

Someday, perhaps, the most diligent pop-divas might distantly approach Wilson’s unruffled panache, but don’t hold your breath waiting. Pure art – like integrity – never settles for second-best. Frankly, for artists, as exalted as Cassandra Wilson, the Simon Cowells of planet earth merely serve as closed prison cells, not express highways to intoxicating art. It’s their loss – and ours.

  • SINGLE REVIEW: Showbiz Christmas, Simon Gross

    Ahhh… Christmas camp.

There are three things we want in a Christmas song: 1) Camp 2) Camp and 3) Camp and Big Brother’s Showbiz showman Simon Gross delivers all three in outstanding measure in his insta-hit Showbiz Christmas.

Gross manages to shoehorn in his well-worn, some may argue genius catchphrase “Showbiz” into 3 minutes and 10 seconds of pure Christmas campness, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Cliff Richard released Mistletoe and Wine.

Move over Weather Girls, Madonna and Wham, we have a contender for the gayest Christmas single ever released.

If you mix Peter Kay’s Once Upon A Christmas Song, with Britney’s My Only Wish you’re starting to get close to Simon’s Showbiz Christmas.

Fairly speaking it won’t or can’t match Mariah’s 1994 mega hit All I Want For Christmas, which has entered the UK charts every Christmas since 2005, when chart rules changed to allow digital purchases count towards them, but it makes a fair attempt at giving the UK an alternative to whatever bland winner’s song that Simon Cowell is bound to give the UK as it’s Christmas number 1.

With proceeds going to Centrepoint, the charity that aims gives homeless young people a future; there’s never been a better reason to change the Christmas number 1

  • SINGLE REVIEW: Pillow Talk, by Le Grind

I get asked to review quite a few things, some are a little “meh” so I tend to pass, some are good and I’ll say so, some are amazing and I’ll gush – this, this little gem is toe-tappingly tremendous! So there!

Like all good gays, I love me a decent beat, something to shake my ample booty to, even if these days its more likely to be shaken in the kitchen whilst making dinner rather than semi-naked in some sweaty club somewhere. This trio deliver that beat, in spades!
Le Grind are a duo formed in a nightclub in Queens, Gareth (writing/production and instrumentation) and Boo (drums/production) met singer Reyna when she out sang a Prince track! Takes some guts and a decent set of tonsils – this lady has both.

Their first single, “I was there (Where were you?)” was an underground hit and received some decent airplay and reviews, with Marc Almond no less (ask yer mum or dad if you are too young!) appearing in their promo.
Next came “Toute Chaud”, which gained support form the likes of Roisin Murphy and Andy Bell and airplay on BBC6 Music, KissFM and Gaydio.
Their latest offering, “Pillow Talk”, mixes electro/funk/disco into an instant hit, and armed with their own dance mixes, this trio are bound for great things.
The promo below is self-produced also and includes their “Tinder” dance move…..I know not what this Tinder is (!) but apparently, it means “onto the next one”!
Give them a listen, tap your toes or tantalise with your tush……either way, enjoy!

    Available on Amazon | iTunes

  • Showbiz Simon Reveals Christmas Single Artwork

Simon Gross has revealed the artwork for his Christmas single ‘Showbiz Christmas’.

Showbiz Simon is set to go head to head for the coveted Christmas Number 1 slot and will be up against, with almost certainty, whoever wins this year’s X FACTOR. Simon has thrown his showbiz cap into the ring and we’re, yes we’re backing him for that number one spot. It’s super camp and super Christmasy and has been written by gay scene stalwart Jason Prince. And yes he screams Showbiz, quite a bit.

The entertainer, is hoping his single with proceeds going to the charity for the homeless, Centre Point, will make a mark on the UK charts, when its released in a few days on iTunes.
