X Factor contestant comes out as gay

X Factor singer Danny Tetley has come out as gay

    ITV

Danny Tetley has opened up about his sexuality and revealed his dad’s surprising response when he found out.

Danny has been out to his family since 2001, but it’s only now that his sexuality has become wider public knowledge. Speaking to The Sun, about how he came out to his Dad, Danny said, “I always had my questions over the years but Dad was never open about it.

It turns out that the pair came out to each other whilst on holiday in the LA and were comparing which guys they both found attractive.

Danny revealed, “In LA we’d gone into a bar and then realised it was a gay bar.

“The drinks flowed and we started talking about the men in there who were handsome.

“That led to a conversation back at the hotel and we were honest with each other for the first time.

“It was quite a strange moment — there aren’t many fathers and sons who are gay.”

“It must have been tough for my dad growing up in the era he did and not being able to be himself”.

He revealed that his parents split when the singer was just six-years-old, Danny was quick to add, however, that his father did love his mum.

The X Factor singer realised that he was gay when he was just four years old. Speaking about how people react when they find out that he is gay he says that they’re often surprised, “When I did come out it was always a bit of a shock because I was in the rugby and football teams. People say I am not your typical gay man, but who is?”

    So is Danny single?

According to the singer, he is focussing on the competition at the moment and doesn’t have time for dating, but joked that since he’s been on the show that his social media has blown up with male attention. He said, “I’ve had plenty of men hitting on me through social media, saying they fancy me, but I have no time at the minute and I’m liking my own space.”

  • Harry Styles has been thinking about Timothée Chalamet’s peach

Harry Styles has been thinking about Timothée Chalamet’s peach

    and why not?

In the latest issue of i-D, global pop star, Harry Styles interviewed the star of last year’s breakout gay movie, Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet. One thing on his mind, evidently, was that now famous peach scene.

If you don’t know about the peach scene, spoiler alert, in the movie, the sexually frustrated teen that Chalamet plays ends up having sex with the peach. It’s a bit iconic and definitely one of the sexy sex movies we suggest you try at home.

In the interview, Styles asks, “Can you still eat peaches?”

Laughing Chalamet replied, “Umm I can, but not without thinking about it…”

    Styles confessed, “I’ve had a hard time…”

Chalamet continued, “That’s the most awkward scene to see with your parents in the whole world. My poor father…”

“I’m sure he’s done it too,”

Uhhh? Suddenly the interview turns down the path of a fruit f**king father. Weird, just weird.

  • This man wants to be trans-age

A man in his late 60s has launched a legal battle to try and lower his age from 69 to 49.

Emile Ratelband is arguing that if people can legally change their gender then he should be able to legally change his age.

According to Sky News, the Dutch entrepreneur wants to change his date of birth after his doctors advised him that he has a body of a 45-year-old. He says he wants to change his birthday from 11th March 1949 to 11th March 1969.

Ratelband is using the argument if transgender people can legally change their gender then he should be able to change his age.

Ratelband told De Telegraaf: “You can change your name. You can change your gender. Why not your age? Nowhere are you so discriminated against as with your age.”

He has also cited that he has been on the receiving end of discrimination, particularly when it comes to employment and his love life. He said, “When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car. I can take up more work.

“When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”

The case is being heard in Arnhem, Gelderland, where it is expected to last for up to four weeks.

  • Forty percent of Brits over the age of FIFTY have experienced age discrimination

Four in 10 over 50s have experienced age discrimination, according to a survey.

    (C) BIGSTOCK

A study of 50,000 Brits aged over 50 found one in 10 have felt ‘isolated’ and left out of team bonding exercises, social events and meetings at work.

And 62 per cent believe they have lost out on jobs due to their age.

One in 10 have even faced negative remarks about how old they are from their colleagues or manager.

Government to consider whether ageism could be considered as a hate crime.

The study was conducted by SunLife as the Government announces a review of whether hate crime offences could include ageist attitudes and behaviour.

It also found that as well as experiencing age discrimination themselves, almost a third have witnessed someone else being subjected to it.

SunLife director of marketing Ian Atkinson said, “Age discrimination and ageist language continues to be a challenge for many people.

“The average age in the UK is higher than it’s ever been and there are more people over 50 in the UK – around 24,440,415 – than ever too.

“So, it’s disheartening to think that in 2018 so much ageism still abounds.

“It’s also very odd to see how some people discriminate against a group they hope to one day join.”

Fifteen per cent of those polled also claim to have experienced discrimination in the health sector by being refused referrals because of how they old they were.

A further one in five believe they have experienced discrimination at the hands of their insurers, being landed with higher rates due to their age.

And this figure increases to one in three, once people reach 75 years or older.

    Underrepresented in the media

    (C) ITV – Vicious from ITV was one of the very few television shows which featured a gay couple over the age of 50. It has since been cancelled by the TV company.

The research also found a vast swathe of over 50s say they are under-represented in TV shows and films, with two-thirds believing there should be more older people on the box.

Seventy-two per cent of those surveyed think the representation of their age group in the media is negative, and gets worse the older you get.

And 59 per cent feel ignored by brands and advertisers.

More than a third of respondents believe their demographic isn’t catered to properly by the fashion industry, 24 per cent feel ignored by tech brands and around one in six feel neglected by health and beauty firms.

However, despite perceived ageism in the UK, 78 per cent ‘couldn’t care less’ what others think of them since turning 50.

And after hitting the age milestone, around six in 10 say they enjoy life more and believe it gets better the older you get.

  • Could Alan Turing be the face for the new £50 note?

Could Alan Turing be the face for the new £50 note?

There are calls to make Alan Turing the face of the new £50 to serve as a “painful reminder of what we lost.”

    Alan Turing
    Public Domaain

The Bank of England has invited members of the public to vote on which figure should appear on the new £50 note.

Former Manchester MP John Leech led a nearly decade-long campaign to pardon Alan Turing, gaining immense public support from legendary physicists such as Stephen Hawking.

During the campaign, Mr Leech submitted several bills to Parliament saying it was “utterly disgusting and ultimately just embarrassing” that the conviction was upheld as long as it was, and celebrated the posthumous pardon.

He then turned to acquiring pardons for the 75,000 other men convicted of the same outdated crime.

At the UK premiere of a film based on Turing’s life, The Imitation Game, the producers thanked Mr Leech for bringing the topic to public attention and securing Turing’s pardon.

Supporting Turing for the new £50 note John Leech said, “It is almost impossible to put into words the difference that Alan Turing made to society, but perhaps the most poignant example is that his work is estimated to have shortened the war by four years and saved 21 million lives.

“And yet way he was treated afterwards remains a national embarrassment and an example of society at its absolute worst.

“Placing Turing on the £50 note would at least go some way to acknowledging his unprecedented contribution to society and science.

“But more importantly it will serve as a stark and frankly painful reminder of what we lost in Turing and what we will lose again if we ever allow that kind of hateful ideology to win.”

  • Grey’s Anatomy star comes out as gay

Twenty-seven-year-old actor Jake Borelli came out via Instagram the same night as his character on the show Grey’s Anatomy.

Jake Borelli, took time on Thursday to write a heart-warming message on social media after his character, Dr Levi Schmitt, on the long-running TV drama, Grey’s Anatomy embarked on a same-sex love story. The actor wrote how he “craved” as a young person, storylines like the one his character is involved with and hoped that the character would bring hope to others.

Taking to Instagram the star wrote, “As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me. This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I’m able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy. His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you”.

Borelli continued, “To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together. And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can’t thank you enough, and I love you more than all the stars…”

The actor also spoke to Entertainment Weekly about opening up about his sexuality, saying that he was already out to his wider circle of friends and family, “I’ve been out to my friends and family for almost 10 years now, but within the last couple of months of shooting the show and really getting to know this character and seeing the response, I’ve realised that this is becoming bigger than just me,” he told the outlet.

“Within the last year or so, I’ve been given the opportunity to speak on a much larger platform. With that opportunity, I am able to come out to a much larger group of people”.

The post was liked 25,000 times over 12 hours and the actor received scores of supportive messages from fans.

  • Here’s what Brazil’s new president has said about gay people

Brazil has a brand new president and it’s not good news for LGBT+ people.

Janine Moraes / Câmara dos Deputados / Wikipedia

Brazil’s new far-right president has threatened violence against gay people and that having them as neighbours lowers the land value.

Jair Bolosoanro has a chequered history when it comes to minority groups including gay people. Earlier this year Brazil’s public prosecutor charged Bolsonaro with inciting discrimination against gay people, indigenous people and black people after he said, “If I see two men kissing in the street, I will hit them.”

Rather a gay son would die

Speaking on the thought that one of his sons could be gay the anti-gay politician told Playboy in 2011, “I would not be able to love a gay son. I would rather he die in an accident”. He also said that if a gay couple were to become his neighbours he believed it would lower the market value of his home.

In July 2011 in an interview with  Época, Bolsonaro said that he would “fight to prevent the distribution of the ‘gay kit’ [a set of guidelines proposed by UNESCO to promote the rights of the LGBT community in primary schools] because “their intention is to promote homosexuality, which is an affront to the family structure, and if that makes me prejudiced, then I’m prejudiced and very proud of it.”

Oh and he believes that homosexuality has increased because “due to liberal habits, drugs” and women in the workplace.

    Brazil and LGBT+ People

Brazil has a terrible reputation for violence against LGBT+ people. In January it was reported that an LGBT+ person is killed in Brazil every 19 hours. and in September 2017, it was ruled that homosexuality is a disease, by allowing so-called “gay cure” therapy to continue.

Judge Waldemar Claudio de Carvalho ruled that homosexuality can be treated as a disease and that conversion therapy as a means of curing it, is legal. The ruling has caused widespread condemnation and concern amongst LGBT+ people and their allies.

Despite this, Brazil is home to one of the world’s biggest pride events.

  • HIV campaigner and advocate dies, 25

A campaigner who devoted his time to erasing stigma for those living with HIV has died at the age of 25.

Jacob Alexander an immerging designer, a former student at the University of the Arts London and HIV campaigner has died at the age of 25. It is believed he ended his own life, according to PinkNews. He was just 25.

Alexander had devoted the last few years campaigning against HIV stigma and had created The Positive Project, which hoped to enlighting people about living with HIV. For his campaign, he created a t-shirt range and an app with the proceeds going to HIV research.

Alexander has not been heard from since October 5 when he wrote a message on Instagram which read, “Date In private, love in private, be happy in private, live in private, that way, you can take your losses, in private, maintain in private rebuild yourself in private.

In the caption, the campaigner wrote, “pay attention to the last line and understand where I’ve been hiding back soon”

It is understood that Alexander’s family will continue the work of The Positive Project.

According to his website, Jacob was diagnosed with HIV in 2015 and following on from his diagnosis, the designer struggled to come to terms with his status. He launched The Positive Project in 2016.

His website states, “He wanted to combat this stigma and try to shed a positive light on the HIV virus and those living with it by raising awareness through inviting the general public (and a few familiar faces too!) to take part in The Positive Project. As mentioned in Jacob’s TEDx talk in March 2016, he feels as though HIV based charities have been pushed aside in current news by larger run charities such as Cancer Research UK for example. Help Jacob get HIV in the headlines again, and together help him make a difference”.

Tributes have been pouring out for Alexander with Greg Owen, co-founder of I Want PrEP Now, tweeted: “I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of @jacobalxndr. He was such a sweetheart. Rest in peace.”

Many people have also taken to his Instagram page to write their condolences on his last message.

If you’d to help continue the good work of The Positive Project please consider buying a t-shirt.

Calendar Creative Director, Jake Hook, said, “To be nominated for this award alone was fantastic news, to make the final has been incredible and I’m so proud of each and every one of the seventy-one players who gave up their time, and clothes, to help support their teams and Balls To Cancer. The 2019 Calendar sold out in just three weeks this year meaning we had to re-print. This is fantastic news for the charity and for encouraging more guys to regularly check themselves for signs of cancer, which tragically takes many lives each year.”

The Naked Rugby Players returned earlier this month with a Renaissance themed calendar following the success of their first calendar.

  • Protesters at the Bohemian Rhapsody over cuts in the NHS

Protesters at the Bohemian Rhapsody over cuts in the NHS

Protesters from ACT UP and the NHS Anti-Swindle Team have protested at the Bohemian Rhapsody premier today

    (C) Levi Hinds

Protesters from two pressure groups have disrupted the Bohemian Rhapsody launch calling for HIV treatment that is “comprehensive and easily accessible treatment for all people, in all countries”.

The film, which features Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury has also attracted criticism for its “pacification and sanitisation” of the singer’s life. Freddie Mercury died in 1991 from complications from AIDS just days after he announced that he was living with the disease.

The film and particularly the trailer has received a great deal of attention for its meagre perception of the huge contribution that sexuality, the AIDS crisis and the stigma associated had on Freddie Mercury’s life.

Speaking about the decision to protest, Hywel ap Dafydd said, “Queen was the soundtrack of my childhood. Freddie died when I was twelve, it was the first time I heard of AIDS and HIV.

“I’ve been living with HIV for the past eight years thanks to medication that came too late to safe Freddie and the millions of people who died because of AIDS.

“There’s a drug called PrEP which stops people from catching HIV but the NHS rations it so not everyone who needs it can get it. “It’s disgraceful that the NHS denies people this opportunity that neither I nor Freddie had.”

Jeremy Goldstein from ACT UP LONDON said, “Freddie ‘Killer Queen’ Mercury was a migrant who died from AIDS and today HIV+ migrants are some of the most oppressed in the HIV / AIDS community. We are here today to highlight the ongoing crisis. Farrokh Bulsara was professionally known as Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar in 1946. The son of Parsis, he spent most of his childhood at boarding school in India. At seventeen he and his family became refugees fleeing from the Zanzibar revolution. After an epic career with Queen Freddie sadly died in 1991 his home in Kensington the day after he publicly announced he was living with HIV. We demand that all HIV+ migrants are treated with upmost dignity, that HIV services stop being closed down and an end to all illegal detention of HIV+ migrants.”

    (C) Levi Hinds

    “Greedy pharmaceutical”

Han Smith from ACT UP LONDON said, “Much has changed since then but our sexual health is still under pressure. Due to price gouging by greedy pharmaceutical companies, our NHS rations access to new medication for Hep C and HIV while yet another sexual health service bites the dust. We want access to HIV and Hep C drugs for all. We want stigma education for all. We want sexual health clinics for all. We want it all and we want it now.”

Kenza Simon from  ACT UP LONDON added, “I am eighteen and I am involved in Act Up London because it is very important for me to fight for our rights. As an LGBT woman who was born in a century where AIDS medicine is more accessible for people, I feel lucky but I realise that we still have a lot to do even in 2018. Our aims changed, AIDS not. This is the reason why I want to be dedicated to this struggle. Activism change the world, let’s do this.”

Four decades on and we’re still fighting

dan glass, ACT UP reminded us, “In the fourth decade of this crisis, ACT UP LONDON fight to ensure comprehensive and easily accessible treatment for all people, in all countries.  This includes not only medications but also mental and social health services as well as housing and economic equality. Here in the UK, we are united with the coalition of activists fighting to keep our National Health Service free, publicly run, and fully funded. In a time of continuing stigma, silence, and isolation, we combat discrimination against and promote the visibility and leadership of those living with HIV and AIDS – including this hugely important biography of our icon Freddie Mercury.”

  • Taxi driver who raped male passenger in Leeds jailed

Taxi driver who raped male passenger in Leeds jailed

Mohammed Ilyas has been jailed for 12 years after being convicted of rape by a Leeds Crown Court.

A taxi driver who orally raped another man who got into his car has been jailed for 12 years. Mohammed Ilyas, 44, was found guilty of raping a  passenger in the early hours one morning in May 2016. The unnamed victim, who had been drinking at a pub in Leeds, was put into the cab waiting outside the New Penny, in Leeds, by his friends, who assumed he would be safe.

The court heard how LLyas drove his cab to a remote farm area where he orally raped his victim.

The court heard how the victim had been driven to feeling suicidal following the attack. The impact state read, “Because of what the taxi driver did to me that night I have at many points been suicidal.

“I never go to town alone anymore and will never get a taxi alone again.

“I will never forget this. I don’t know when or if I will ever get over it.”

    “Engineering a situation”

Jailing Ilyas for 12-years, Judge Tom Bayliss QC said, “I’m quite sure that you deliberately parked your taxi outside what you knew was a gay pub, thus deliberately engineering a situation where you found yourself alone in your taxi with a passenger who was incapacitated by drink.

“That passenger had come from a pub, you then committed rape on him, a homosexual rape upon a man who you had seen coming from a gay pub. “I’m quite sure that you targeted (the victim).

“It may not have been long in the planning, but once you saw, you him stopped your taxi and you targeted him.”

Mr Llyas pleaded not guilty during his trial in September.

Judge Bayliss also banned LLyas from contacting his victim and from returning to work as taxi driver in the future.
