  • INTERVIEW | Lady Lloyd, Life after Drag Queens Of London

Have you been missing your weekly dose of Drag Queens Of London? Never fear we’ve got an interview with a fierce queen or two – starting of with Lady Lloyd, who isn’t afraid to say how she feels.

Since DQOL has aired, how has life changed?
Dramatically! I find people hiding in shop doorways to avoid me!

What are your favourite highlights from the show?
Pushing Vanity’s piano over has to be the one. That show is such dirge! Everyone was falling asleep – something had to be done.

Has being involved with DQOL changed you for the better for worse?
Hasn’t changed me at all, apart from the roses that arrive on my doorstop everyday… it’s the other ones you wanna watch!

For the next series… What more would you, could you, bring to the show…?
Oh c’mon, more of the same, drama is never far away from me, and theres no denying Buffalo Girls have been a force of energy on the show.

So should the UK have a Drag Race?
Only if RuPaul does it, and Lily is too old!

What are your thoughts on Jonathan Ross presenting it?
I like him as a presenter, but it has to be RuPaul. It’s Ru’s baby and she does it so well.

As the war of the words rages on with RuPaul, Logo and Glaad surrounding the word ‘tranny’ where you do you sit on the matter?
    TRANNY TRANNY TRANNY!

Is drag getting its 2nd wind?
It seems to be very ‘in’ right now, like back to the 90s when Ru was ruling. People will always love drag though, it’s just the media that dictates what the masses are ‘consuming’. At the minute the media is on it.

Who do you consider to be your Drag Idol?
Tasty Tim and Princess Julia. They haven’t had a night in since ’79 and are consistently fashionable and fabulous. My heroes!

    The best drag movie is….
Definitely NOT Priscilla. The original La Cage is amazing, and of course Paris is Burning is an inspiration to so many. 10s across the board.

What’s the most common mistake for a new drag queen?
Shaving the eyebrows! It’s ok for an extreme drag look, and looks fabulous on real character drag but when the more femme queens do it, it just looks stupid. Women have actual eyebrows you know!

Is it easy to get into drag as a business?
No, very hard I think. Its still a niche market – there aren’t many jobs going, and most fail after a year or so, the hot new thing comes along in a while, but you never actually see them getting many paid gigs. I’ve been lucky that I have worked as a DJ consistently for almost 10 years now.

If you weren’t doing drag for a living what would you do?
Something in music, I went to the BRIT school and studied music, so I’m very happy that I have been able to work with music. If I wasn’t doing drag I’d probably have studied more production side, as it’s something I would love to do but can’t find the time in between hangovers.

What’s the worst thing a drag queen could do to another?
Pull their wig off – but it’s also the most satisfying. Ha.

To tuck or not to tuck? And if you do – how do you do it?
Never, I like it all on show, let them know what’s going on – front and centre.

  • CCTV Images Released After Homophobic Attack on Man In Leeds

The British Transport Police are looking for people with information after a 21-year-old man was attacked outside a Leeds train station.

  • Regrets for Big Brother Mark after cheeky snog with Christopher?

Is Mark feeling a little bit of regret after his snog with Christopher?

Awaking with a slight hangover Mark said that he was feeling ‘regretful’, whilst Ash and Chris observed that Mark and Christopher make an “unlikely” pairing.

However in a convo with Big Brother Mark said that he, ‘was a bit merry last night and by merry, I do mean drunk…I hope I haven’t made a show of myself’ He goes on to say that he has ‘no regrets…I don’t regret anything. I came in here to have a full experience and just throw myself in to it so no, I’m not going to regret nothing’.

Meanwhile Christopher speaks to Steven saying, ‘in the outside world we would never have met…I would have thought he’s over the top and would drive me up the wall” He went on to say that he would see him on the outside but admits that he doesn’t think they will get together and do a “you and Kimberly” in the House. They go on to discuss how Mark is quite closed on certain subjects, such as relationships saying that “there are many things with Mark that are off limits’

Finally, Christopher and Mark discuss what happened last night. Mark says that he sometimes forgets that there are cameras in the House and Christopher reassures him that he didn’t say anything wrong.

Later that day, Christopher talks to Big Brother about his relationship with Mark and admits that despite wanting to kill him half the time, there’s something “quite loveable” about him. He goes on to say they are ‘like an old married couple, long before our time’, noting that Mark “calls all the shots” but adds that he ‘likes me more than he’ll admit to anyone in here’

  • Petition against the gay ballroom dance ban

A petition has gone live after we revealed last week that the British Dance Council, BDC, is to consider banning same-sex couples from Ballroom Dancing competitions.

Last week we revealed that the BDC is to consider banning same-sex couples from all Ballroom Dance competitions in the UK. A proposal from its rules sub-committee has suggested that dance partners for Ballroom dance competitions should comprise of a “man” and a “lady”.

The BDC is the governing body of ballroom dancing in the UK. It formulates and administers the rules for all competitions. It will consider the proposal on the 21st July.

A petition, created by Bryan Allen, on Change.org is urging the BDC not to introduce the rule.

A statement from the petition reads, ‘The proposal is based on complaints that a two men dancing together will possess more physical strength and stamina than a man and a lady dancing together, giving them an unfair advantage.

‘However, the opposing view is that dance competitions are not to do with strength, but rather are judged on qualities of poise, presentation, timing, musicality and technique, regardless of whether it is a mixed or same-sex couple.

‘And not only does banning same-sex couples seem a backwards step in a society which continues to recognise the equality and rights of same-sex couples, it also deprives a lot of dancers a chance to compete in a sport where training takes a considerable amount of time, dedication and cost.’

  • COLUMN | You Have Got To Be Kitten Me Meow

Why am I so obsessed with the cat? Cats in general. My friends are too, and it’s not a cliquey, inside joke thing either. The catalogue and popularity of cat-based videos or pictures on the Internet seems insatiable – I do believe we have all become “advocats”. One Pride, my friends and I discovered that the cat had puked on the kitchen floor, which we somehow turned into a scatty psychotic “whodunnit” game as to who tapped / romanced the cat so hard it vomited a ravishing tuna ragu.

We later discovered the cat had helped itself to cheesy nachos (comfort eating). But we still had our suspicions about one of the party guests and his cat-loving tendencies. We were even more confused when the cat left us two dead birds on the front door step, which could implicate that there was a third party involved also, a gift for each culprit… I digress lost in my “Memories”. So, when did this obsessive nature with cats for this planet start? What was the catalyst?

Ancient Egypt regarded cats to be demi-gods, along with one of their Goddesses, Bastet, being depicted in the form of a cat. Bastet was the goddess of protection, love, dance, and music. Perhaps the inspiration for the creator of Dubstep cat? Probably not. When you hear or read about the “Eye of Ra”- Bastet is one of the gods that form the “Eye” as she was regarded as Ra’s defender. Cats were so highly regarded and protected that they were even mummified! Now there’s an idea for The Mummy 6,7, or whatever number they’re on now! Best not give them any ideas actually.

Over in Greece we have tales by Herodotus that in the event of a household’s cat passing away, the family would shave their eyebrows to signify their loss. I can’t say I’m too surprised about that tradition not catching on. Plus, why would we want to shave off our eyebrows when we can just get the cats face tattooed now instead- Hoorah!

And, what of the temptress, the beckoning cat of Japan (maneki neko). A talisman believed to attract an abundance of fortune and luck. You’ve all seen them before in oriental food stores and restaurants. On the surface they may strike you to be a tacky garish bit of plastic, but actually they are quite profound. These little talismans come in all shapes and sizes, colours, wearing different outfits etc. Each having its own meaning and purpose from ensuring success in love to keeping evil spirits at bay.

Looking at our global obsession, I stumbled across a rather sweet old wives’ tale, or fable if you like, from Poland about pussy willow. The story reads of a mother cat crying down by a riverbank where her kittens were drowning as they had chased butterflies into the water. The willow along side the river recognised the mummy cat’s distress and leaned their branches into the water. The kittens clasped onto the willow and were brought to shore safely, and now each springtime the willow sprouts their little fur buds to represent where the kittens once clung. Isn’t that just LOVELY?! Also, fun fact: do you know how you would refer to a group of cats? A clowder of cats. Alternatively you could say a glaring of cats, or my personal favourite, a clutter of cats. Lovely on the tongue- the expression, not the actual cat.

So let us now catapult back to modern day where we have such likes of “Nyan Cat”, the YouTube sensation that has nearly 110 million views! Hours upon hours of comical cat compilations to the weird and disturbing! “Welcome to Kitty City” is particularly hypnotic. What on earth possessed us to start sticking cats faces through pieces of bread? And “melon cat”? There have been so many viral crazes its unreal, but the latest fad for me really takes the biscuit.

Cat. Cafés. London’s Lady Dinah’s café, where you can sit for coffee, perhaps a slice of cake- with cats… that are just roaming around you. You might be thinking what a great idea- and I suppose I do too, as all the cats are re-homed cats so it is for a good cause etc. But this café is fully booked until October this year! The city of Melbourne, Australia has recently announced they are also opening their first cat café. Before we know it we’ll be ordering our McDonald’s from a tabby in a cap, “Would you like catnip with that?”. It will be interesting to see which fashion house actually puts a cat on the cat walk first. Irony would suggest Pucci.

Our feline friends can also be trained to become a “therapy cat”, used to decrease anxiety, level out heart rate, and general companionship. My knowledge of the depth of training is limited, but I doubt they get paws on with a stethoscope or have to study the human mind- I am sure that a nice temperament would ensure flying colours though!

I personally would say I am a dog-lover; I have to by default as I have 2 via shared custody. However, there is something different about cats that seem to have captivated us for thousands of years. There isn’t one specific thing that you can put your finger on either. They are and have been icons of protection, magick, deities, luck, love, music, humour and companionship. They pretty much tick every box in terms of positive connotations. I read somewhere, “The internet is a lot like ancient Egypt. People write on walls and worship cats”. On that note, I’m off for a catnap. (Sorry).

  • The Justin Bieber Hat Effect

We’re not sure who’s telling JB that hats are back, but if they are he’s certainly paid attention.

Now, we may have missed the memo that said ‘Cowboy hats is back’ but we’re not sure that this look is truly working for Justin Bieber. Now there are many reasons why people take to wearing hats all of a sudden. Maybe JB is concerned about sun protection… Or maybe not. Sales in hats apparently rocketed since Justin started sporting the look. (Thats a lie… We didn’t do any research on hat sales).

Justin recently announced his retirement from the music industry – a statement that was immediately retracted by his management. Judging by some of the posts to his instagram, is Justin venturing into the world of modelling?

See what you think of Justin’s look at the moment.
