Only 40 per cent of gay men will attend a pride in 2019

According to a new survey, only 40 per cent of gay men will attend one of the UK’s 150+ prides this year.

New research from online-dating specialist Gaydar, has revealed that while the UK’s LGBT+ community is planning a big summer of Pride celebrations, not everyone is feeling included.

Over 500 people completed Gaydar’s survey. While many respondents were excited about being part of Pride celebrations, having their voice heard, and playing their part in ensuring LGBT+ visibility, 32% of respondents have decided that they won’t be attending a Pride event this year, and a further 28% have not yet decided.

Barriers to attendance identified by the survey included – geography, cost, age, disability, not feeling included, or having no interest or connection to Pride events. A number of respondents felt that Pride events have become over-commercialised, or that they don’t represent who they are.

Over 150 different Pride celebrations will be held across the UK in 2019.

While some of the biggest events will be held in cities such as London, Brighton, Manchester, and Birmingham, survey respondents confirmed that they will also be enthusiastically supporting local events in their hometowns.

“This is going to be a big year for Pride…” said John Edwards, Managing Director of Gaydar. “It’s the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which is a major milestone for our community. This year, Gaydar will also be celebrating our 20th anniversary. Plus, it’s been a particularly political year here in the UK – I’m sure that will also be reflected in our Pride marches.”

Survey respondents were asked to indicate the key issues that they were passionate about and keen to see addressed in Pride marches.

Issues identified included – a need for more inclusion, Trans rights, anti-discrimination protections, equality, highlighting those countries where homosexuality is illegal, support for older LGBT+ people, HIV stigma, and climate change. Also, quite a lot of respondents feel that Pride should not be addressing social or political issues, or that they have no personal interest in any social or political issues.

“Gaydar has a long tradition of supporting and being part of Pride events across the UK and around the world…” said John Edwards. “We’re excited that as we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’re going to be helping LGBTQ communities across the UK to celebrate Pride, tocelebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, and work towards creating a better future for LGBTQ people around the world.”

  • COLUMN | Sleaze please

Once upon a time in the 1990s when AIDS and HIV were still at their most prevalent and unchecked there was funding for the role of “safer sex fairy!” in Devon.

A friend encountered him at a local cruising ground, Haldon Forest. I was informed by the friend who was as agile as a wood nymph that as he skipped gaily along; from behind a tree a man stepped out and introduced himself. He had a longer job title than I have given him but in essence, he gave advice on safer sex and handed out free condoms and lube at local cruising grounds. Now that is what I call a community service.

Since that time of more than 20 years ago I have always prayed to the safer sex fairy when I want something. This year, I wrote him a letter and not Santa with my Christmas wish list. All I wanted was sleaze, please! My wish has been granted.

On Christmas day for reasons of loneliness and nostalgia, I logged onto what was once the busiest of chat sites Gaydar, and it is back! Whether you are of a mind to call it sleaze or kink, interspersed among the plethora of rooms for various locations are those for Bondage, CP/Spanking, Domination, Master & slave and others. Oh, happy days.

The rooms are currently quiet, though bondage always was, so hard to type when you are hogtied and voice command software is of no use once the ball-gag has been fitted.

What is needed is for people to tell each other. I would phone a friend, but it is the middle of the night as I write this, so I am telling you.

Must break off and go to see if the spirit of the safer sex fairy is in the forest tonight, for me to thank.

  • Gaydar founder dies, just 51

The founder of one of the world’s biggest gay chat sites, Gaydar, has died at the age of 51.

Gaydar’s co-founder, Henry Badenhorst, has died in South Africa. He was just 51 at the time of his death. According to early reports, it appears as though Badenhorst took his own life on the 11th of November, Buzzfeed has reported.

Close friends of the businessman confirmed his death.

Local media in Johannesburg reported that a 51-year-old man was seen falling from the 23rd floor of Michaelangelo Towers.

Gaydar was founded by Badenhorst along with his partner Gary Frisch in 1999 after a mutual friend of theirs spoke about how he was too busy to find a boyfriend. The pair created the website shortly after. Badenhorst and Frisch’s personal relationship ended in 2006, but they remained business partners until Frisch’s death.

Both the co-founders of the iconic chat site are now dead.

Frisch died after falling from a building balcony in 2007. The coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure at his inquest. A pathologist, Dr Peter Wilkins, said ketamine was found in Mr Frisch’s blood and liver.

In 2007, Badenhorst was named in the Independent‘s now-defunct Pink List as the fourth most influential LGBT+ person in the UK.

    Editorial Analysis of Gaydar

Founded in Cape Town, South Africa, Gaydar was revolutionary for the gay dating scene of 1999. Almost overnight it changed the way gay and bisexual men could meet and hang out online. No longer would guys have to go to gay bars and clubs to meet with other gay guys. They could do it from their homes. It was almost a decade before Grindr and other dating apps would venture onto the scene and again change the hookup rules.

In its heydey, Gaydar had millions of accounts and would have tens of thousands of men on at any one time. It also had Gaydar Radio and two physical bar/cafe locations in central London. Both bars in London were closed in 2013 and Gaydar Radio was disbanded and all licenses were handed over to Gaydio. Although it is still popular in South Africa, the UK and Ireland Gaydar’s standing around the world has diminished.

Gaydar was sold in May 2013 to Charlie Parsons, who created the Channel 4 show, The Big Breakfast.

  • COMMENT | Just what has happened to Gaydar?

Gaydar – The death of an icon?

I used to be a regular on Gaydar chat. I enjoyed that it was all-encompassing; in that, I could elect to be in rooms that were either fetish or location driven and that I could see them all at the same time. Then one night it all changed as Gaydar had a makeover. Less of a makeover really, more of a demolition.

It went from being something similar to a magazine one might find on the top shelf in the newsagents and changed in likeness to the reading material in a doctors or solicitors waiting room.

It had metamorphosed into what I would describe as “coffee shop gay”, having been ethically and morally cleansed, and coming out the other side as Conservative with a small “c.”

There are those who are still reeling from the change to the site. I laid a small posy on my router to mark its passing. I sent an email to PinkNews asking they put a notice of obituary as a gesture at its loss.

Then came the attempted resurrection, the chat facility had a couple of new rollouts. Early indications suggested from my appraisal it had been written by someone in London who felt the place was the centre of the gay world as whilst there were rooms for every direction in the capital those of us from the provincial hinterlands were left out in the cold, though this was subsequently addressed.

I try it again every month or so. I miss it. Reminds of the line in the Billy Joel song Italian Restaurant “but you can never go back there again,” because it has changed and so have I.

We asked our lovely readers whether they thought it was better to meet potential partners online or in real life situations.

Here’s what a select few said:

    Daniel Taylor

I met my bf on grindr and still together 2 yrs later

    James Gerrie

Met mine online, chatted for 3 months then met in real life. 6 months later moved 450 miles from my home to the city to where I am now and that was over 3-years-ago but realise this isn’t for everyone

    Just Jezz Greatrix

    Never meet strangers

    Josh Djentleman Smith

You mean people actually date off grindr and gaydar? When did this happen?

    Rob Hand

Don’t suppose it matters really where you meet, it’s all down to the person you meet and connect with, most on dating apps are after one thing but same could be said for those you meet in real life! All generally down to the type of person they are
