  • Shopping is more stimulating than SEX

Shopping could be more stimulating than SEX, according to a pioneering neuroscience study.

Scientists have today unveiled the physiological effects of shopping on the human brain, revealing how “inspired shopping” can deliver moments of prolonged highs in the brain comparable to sexual intercourse.

Experts isolated the secrets to better browsing by analysing Gamma brainwaves which are scientifically linked with higher mind-states of creativity and extreme pleasure.

Partnering with mind-tech experts, MyndPlay, the data unveiled some astounding insights about how Brits can put the inspiration, satisfaction and pleasure back into shopping.

According to the data 84 percent of Inspired Shoppers experienced a ‘buyers high’ at check-out, comparable to a Formula 1 driver finishing a circuit – and twice that of their “Shop-y-cat” counterparts – who just buy things to “fit in”.

Shop-y-cat Shoppers, on the other hand, felt exhausted, with an accumulative 30 percent increase in mental fatigue every ten minutes while shopping.

The results also show Brits can train their brains to stay in the inspiration zone and shop better by staying present, still and calm.

Rob Hattrell, Vice President of eBay UK, said: “Shopping is personal. It’s a reflection of what makes you, you.

“eBay is encouraging Brits to reject the boring and beige, and to stop shopping like everybody else. Instead, we want shoppers to be bolder and express their individuality.

“This fascinating research gives great insight into the highs that can be achieved when you hit the zone of inspiration and shop like nobody else.”

    What is a Shop-y-cat?

Self-confessed ‘Shop-y-cats’, which make up nearly half of the population, admit to often buying items for themselves simply to fit in and ‘keep up with the Joneses’.

Mostly men, these, shop-y-cats experienced a short-lived rush at check-out after making a purchase, observed behavioural psychologists.

More than four in five Shop-y-cats also felt the pressure to fit in whilst browsing increased mental fatigue by 30 percent every 10 minutes.

This is in sharp contrast with Inspired Shoppers who embrace a more intuitive approach, purchasing unique things they truly want, as an expression of their individuality.

    Be an Inspired Shopper!

Brain monitors showed that 84 percent of Inspired Shoppers experience a prolonged mental high, nearly twice that of shop-y-cats and comparable to sex or aa Formula 1 driver finishing a race.

But it seems shoppers are out-of-practice when it comes to experiencing retail euphoria.

When asked to find a unique item, 89 percent of participants found it mentally laborious.

However, the study uncovers that getting into the inspiration zone and achieving optimum enjoyment, simply requires shoppers to maintain a mindstate of being present, still and calm.

  • 5 things that are actually the worst about shopping

Last week I experienced something horrific: shopping on Oxford Street.

I avoid clothes shopping until my wardrobe is decimated. I wait until I’m down to a few pairs of socks and my underwear is looking like the type of thing your parents warned you not to wear in case of being run over before I venture out to rectify the situation. I try to ignore the dwindling collection of shirts and trousers that have been ravaged by over washing, deodorant marks and time until I can do it no more.

Last week was the turning point and I had to face the ugly truth: I needed to go clothes shopping. It was my bi-annual clothes procurement mission and I gritted my teeth, revved myself up on caffeine and went for it.

ALSO READ: 17 you only know if you’ve worked as a go go boy in a gay bar

Maybe Oxford Street on a Sunday wasn’t the best choice for a pathological shopping hater but needs must. I needed new basic items and chain stores are the place to go. I just needed to suck up a whole world of pain.

I won’t go into all the messy details. I won’t describe the moment (fifteen minutes in) when my partner offered to go home and leave, as he couldn’t take my mood any more. I won’t describe the inner demon that emerged and the childish tantrums, rages and traumas (for everyone else, not me). I’ll just tell you why it was so bloody awful.

    1) Un-priced garments:

It’s a shop. You sell things. If there’s no price on it then you can keep it. I’m not asking around or waiting for some glassy eyed teenager to go and check. I’ve got a life to live. I also hate that concealed price/size thing. A whole stack of shirts, neatly folded, with every one having a tag tucked discretely away so that you have to wade through each one and extricate the size label only to find after 10 minutes that they only have extra small and XXL. Strangely a lot of shops seem to cater solely for the very burly or the painfully thin.

    2) Changing rooms:

Bright lights and mirrors at all angles are not something most of us need. I know I’ve got a bald spot. I know that years of smoking have ravaged my skin. I really don’t want this hammering home in an overheated cupboard as I puff and pant and try to ram myself into the sizes I wore 20 years ago.

    3) Vacant automaton shop assistants:

Working in retail is tough, I’m sure, especially with people like me about. Being British, I kind of expect you to show that to me though. I don’t mind surly, truculent and disinterested. What displeases me is the false, robotic eagerness to please. It’s terrifying and disingenuous. I don’t trust the fakery, especially when it’s clearly being delivered through a world of pain and has been taught by a smiley man called Bob on an away day in Milton Keynes.

    4) Other shoppers:

Faster, quicker and out of my way. They’re the only words I need to say. Unfortunately, shouting them out loud only gets you into trouble so I keep them in and just get angrier and my ulcer grows deeper by the moment. People also seem to be having a good time, lingering over the whole experience, which of course, makes me even angrier.

    5) It’s illegal to carry a Taser:

I don’t need to explain that one

The ordeal is over. I have clothes. Project forward in time to six months down the line: that’ll be my next foray into the world of retail. I’d mark it in your diary and avoid the day.

Clothing retailer “mortified” by reaction to “Real Man” online campaign

Online menswear retailer Jacamo has responded to criticism of a “homophobic” and “gender-shaming” online campaign, saying it was “mortified”.

    jacamo-real-men-advert

An online campaign “championing (the) male body and diversity” has backfired after Twitter users slammed and criticised the campaign, saying that it contains a “homophobic undertone” and are “gender shaming”.

The online picture campaign focuses on two men, one male model and one “real man” and always contains the slogan, “real men don’t…”

The campaign which was devised to, “make men feel represented on the high street and to celebrate the diversity of the UK’s men” has seemingly failed to make its point in practice.

The advert which has caused the most offence shows two men, one posing with a “man bag” and the other with a football. The slogan reads, “Real men have balls, not man bags”.

Speaking to THEGAYUK.com Ed Watson of Jacamo said,

“Here at Jacamo championing male body and fashion diversity is really close to our hearts.

“We want to encourage all guys to feel confident – regardless of age, size, shape, colour or sexual orientation and that’s why we launched our Real Man Runway competition, to make more men feel represented on the high street and to celebrate the diversity of the UK’s men. Encouragingly we have loads of entries which are testament to this aim.

“Our social tweets were supposed to be a fun way of illustrating that there is more than one type of man something that the Real Man Runway competition is trying to do.

“We are mortified that this caused any offence and of course apologise.”

Clothing retailer blasted for “Homophobic” Twitter campaign

Clothing retailer Jacamo has been blasted for “homophobic” and “gender shaming” adverts which question clothing and accessory choices for “real men”.

    jacamo-real-men-advert

Menswear retailer Jacamo, is finding out the hard way how not to run an online Twitter campaign as its #RealManRunway campaign has backfired, with many on social media blasting it for its “homophobic” and “gender shaming” undertones.

The online picture campaign focuses on two men, one male model and one “real man” and always contains the slogan, “real men don’t…”

The advert which has caused the most offence shows two men, one posing with a “man bag” and the other with a football. The slogan reads, “Real men have balls, not man bags”.

Twitter users have called for the deletion of the Tweet and for Jacamo to explain itself.

    One user, Mr Onion-Bucket, replied,

“Real companies don’t advertise using homophobic undertones.”

YouTuber and gender activist Georgie Aldous blasted the company in a statement,

“Just seen that the brand that’s all about equality and having clothes accessible for bigger people Jacamo have made a new homophobic advert on their Twitter about what it is to be a ‘real man’. Stating that men who wear man bags aren’t real men and that men who “have balls” aka like football are.

“I feel like I am constantly trying to be shoved into a category that I do not want to be in, I feel like I should have to like football, not like the colour pink, shouldn’t dye my hair and should have a girlfriend because I’m a man. But you couldn’t be more wrong.

am my own person and my gender does not define me or my actions. I like perfume, I wear make-up and I like guys. Does that not make me a real man?”

    BACKLASH

It wasn’t long before the backlash against the company snowballed with many calling for the sacking of its marketing department and the deletion of the account and the Tweet.

Big Brother 2014 star, Mark Byron told THEGAYUK,

“(I’m) fuming about this… How dare they. It’s scandalous.”

    MORTIFIED

A spokesman at Jacamo, which has been trading for 9 years, responded to the criticism by saying that the company was “mortified” and that its aim was, “championing (the) male body and diversity”.

Speaking to THEGAYUK.com Ed Watson said,

“Here at Jacamo championing male body and fashion diversity is really close to our hearts.

Sainsbury’s security guard tells gay couple off for holding hands

A gay couple have been left humiliated and shocked after a security guard at Sainsbury’s told them they were touching inappropriately in store.

    Sainsbury's

A couple in London have been left shocked after a contractor security guard for Sainsbury‘s took them to one side to tell them that they had caused offence to a fellow shopper as they held hands during their shopping trip in the Hackney Road store.

Thomas Rees and his partner Josh said they were holding hands and showed “just general public displays of affection”.

    Sainsbury's

The incident happened after the couple had finished paying for their shopping and were in the process of leaving the store. The security guard, who is employed by an outside security contractor, called them over “with a finger” and told the pair to follow him outside.

He told the couple that another customer had complained about their behaviour.

The retailer, whose current pride slogan is “Sainsbury’s Loves Pride” offered Mr Rees and his boyfriend a £10 gift card as a “goodwill gesture” after Mr. Rees took to Twitter to vent his frustration.

Sainsbury’s Twitter staff tried to resolve the matter by offering the pair a giftcard.

    Mr Rees said,

“My blood boiled. I was shaking and dumbfounded and unable to respond. He kept repeating the customer felt our behaviour was inappropriate.”

Speaking to ITV a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said,

“We sincerely apologise to Thomas and Josh.

“We are an inclusive retailer and employer and do not tolerate discrimination in our stores.

“We will take appropriate action once we’ve concluded our investigation with our security contractor.”
